My solaris 8 x86 keeps rebooting

I do a stack trace of the crash dump and get this:
copper% mdb -k *.0
Loading modules: [ unix krtld genunix ip nfs ipc ptm logindmux ]
> $c
SHATransform+9()
>
Does anyone know what SHATransform+9() is??

Hello,
thank you for your hint. But there is no "NP" sign for the root entry in the /etc/shadow.
So what else could be the cause of the problem?
I appreciate further hints very much.
Thanks, Thomas

  • Ultra 2 (Solaris 8) keeps rebooting

I'm really new to Solaris. Just installed Solaris 8 on an Ultra Enterprise 2 which has two SCSI hard drives. The first drive (1GB) holds the swap partition and the second drive (9GB) holds the Solaris 8 installation.
After doing a Stop-A to get to the Ok prompt, I did a "boot disk1:a" which causes the system to boot properly.
My question is: How to I force the system to boot from the 2nd drive (disk1:a) without me having to hold its hand everytime?
    Thanks.

    ok setenv boot-device disk1:a
    ok reset

  • From 7.3 on NT to 8 on Solaris x86?

Has Oracle ported Oracle8 for Solaris x86?

    Hi,
usually I expect people to do a little research and I do not give everything chewed.
    Point 4:
    go to the
    <b>Oracle9i Database Migration Release 2 (9.2)</b>
    go to the chapter 3
    <b>Upgrading a Database to the New Oracle9i Release</b>
    go to the point:
    <b>Upgrade the Database Manually</b>
    Exactly from here:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96530/upgrade.htm#1009200
    Keep in mind
    1) that the <i>EXACT </i>procedure you are following it is not indicated in this manual
    2) you have to think a little ( do you have all the windows services created on the destination system? if not, you have to create them ... )
    3) this procedure is not supported by SAP. It is a valid option but not supported by them. You have to practice until you get all the points correctly

  • Core 2 Duo and solaris x86 11/06 works for me

This is FYI, since I seen (and posted) problems, but I haven't seen the solution posted.
I have successfully gotten solaris x86 11/06 to install and run on my core 2 duo machine. I had tried solaris x86 06/06, but I could only run in 32bit mode until patch 118855-19 was installed. It looks like 118855-33 is the baseline for 11/06.
With 06/06 I had to edit the grub command and add " kernel/unix" to the end of the 2nd line. This would force 32 bit mode rather than 64 bit. If I tried 64 bit, it would enter an endless reboot cycle. Once I installed the patch to 118855-19 I could run solaris 10 06/06 in 64 bit mode without issue.
Again, since solaris 10 11/06 is at 118855-33, it runs on my core2 machine straight from the install.
    Hope this helps

On a laptop there is little point with running a 64-bit operating system unless it physically has more than 4gb of ram, or if you are processing datasets exceeding 4GB of ram. Unless you're into assembly or use Solaris for some reason to manipulate media, little is to be gained by using 64-bit versions if anything. The increased pointer, integer, and padding causes more memory to use for the same software, most software on 64-bit operating systems runs in 32-bit mode because there is no need to have 16 exabyte memory addressing capability for anything but media encoders, giant databases, or extremely bloated single-threaded software. Sun Java Creator takes a heck of a lot of ram, but even at peak it's still under 4GB. If you move files bigger than 4GB, the ability to memory map all 4096MB might have less overhead on a 64-bit operating system, but generally from an end-user perspective, especially on a fast Intel or Opteron system, you won't notice the difference much. Solaris is bi-arch, a large chunk of Windows Vista and XP x64 is bi-arch, and most of FreeBSD and Linux are bi-arch in 64-bit versions, as I said, no point in making everything 64-bit. 64-bit device drivers is an issue for every OS, you should stick with 32-bit on a laptop, and hold off on desktops unless you need extended assembly registers available only in 64-bit mode.

  • Solaris x86 11/06 hung on Acer TravelMate 8210 Laptop

I've just installed Solaris x86 11/06 on my Acer TravelMate 8210 laptop. The installation was completed successfully. However, when the system is rebooted into Solaris, it is always hung at:
Use is subject to license terms.
This problem happens with both of the 32-bit and 64-bit kernel. While booting with the option -kv, the system always stops at:
    PCI Express-device: pci8086,2448@1e, pci_pci0
    pci_pci0 is /pci@0,0/pci8086,2448@1e
Ive also tried to boot with the -s option, but it doesnt help.
Is there anything else that I can try? Thank you in advance!
    Here is my system spec:

Before the installation, I ran the Solaris Installation Check Tool 1.2, and it said that the system is able to run Solaris.

I've just installed the Solaris Express DE 2/07 and still have the same problem.

  • Telnet from Windows PC is very slow to Solaris x86, after Net linked

(Sorry about the re-post. I posted in the wrong group earlier)
I got the following info from this forum, in regards to configuring my Solaris x86 to link to the Net:
    # echo 192.168.0.1 > /etc/defaultrouter
    # route add default 192.168.0.1
    # echo nameserver 192.168.0.1 >> /etc/resolv.conf
    # cp /etc/nsswitch.dns /etc/nsswitch.conf
So I did the above steps, reboot the Solaris, and my Solaris system can link to the Net fine afterwards. But ever since it had Net access, another problem is created.
Whenever I telnet using a command line from a Windows XP computer, it takes a long time to telnet to this Solaris system. Before, I would see the Solaris login prompt for telnet in a few seconds. Now, it's about 1 minute. Plus, if I try to use an xterminal software from that PC to link to the Solaris x86, it hangs.
So after I undo all the 4 commands above, reboot the Solaris computer, all these problems disappear. I can telnet from my Windows PC to this Solaris system very quickly. However, I no longer have Internet access from my Solaris.
Anyone knows how I can fix this problem? Thanks.

It sounds like a name resolution issue. Can you post the contents of your /etc/nsswitch.conf file for us?

  • Network is down suddenly on my Solaris X86 box

    Hi all,
I have been using Solaris X86 for a while. However, I found a strange problem when downloading large/many
files with FTP. For example, I ftp to my Solairs X86 box and try to download all my backup software to my local
notebook or PC. After about 10 mins, Solaris X86 box's network will be down suddenly without any error or
    warning message.
I found this problem from Solaris8 to Solaris9 and the FTP server daemon I used included NcFTPd, vsftp and
even the default FTP daemon. I have tried two different hardwares. The only one possible reason is my
    network (Intel 100 ServerPro something).
Does anyone have such a strange problem when downloading many/large files from your Solaris X86 box?
I also check the log file but found nothing.....:-(
Thinking to switch FreeBSD/Linux box for my FTP service. Please advice and thanks first!
    Hsinan

This bug is common to the Intel Server 100 MBit Cards
The problem occurs on high net load.
You have to reboot to restart the card, since it is a complete
    stop of the card.
You can try to put the card into another pci-slot, but this helps
    only in rare cases.
I had to replace the card with a 3com 3c905b to have uninterrupted
    transfers.
The Inteldualport cards seem to work to.

  • Mounting a Solaris x86 CD/DVD from a remote Windows CD/DVD-ROM drive

    Greetings, all.
Is it possible to mount a remote Windows CD/DVD-ROM drive? I have the Solaris 10x86 Companion Software DVD sitting in a CD/DVD-ROM drive that's installed on a Windows server on my network. It is shared-out (F:) and the two servers can ping each other. I've also confirmed the NFS services/daemons are running on the Solaris x86 machine. I've tried the following variations but, all have failed to produce successful results:
    # mount -F nfs x.x.x.x:/f /mnt
nfs mount: x.x.x.x: : RPC: Program not registered
    nfs mount: retrying: /mnt
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/f /mnt
    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/f
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/F /mnt
    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/F
[FYI: S10_106_SOFTWARE is the DVD's label as reported by Windows Explorer.]
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/S10_106_SOFTWARE /mnt
    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/S10_106_SOFTWARE

I've also tried mounting it at bootup by adding the appropriate entry in the /etc/vfstab file but, this does not work as well. I've tried Google'ing for an answer to my issue but, I haven't been able to find anything that applies directly to what I'm reporting. It's usually chatter about mounting from one UNIX server to another. Any advice from the community would be greatly appreciated.

After three weeks, you deserve a reply. Windoze does
not natively support NFS.Also deserves a decent answer...
There are two ways to do this:
Install Microsoft's free "Windows Services for UNIX," which includes a Windows NFS server; or
Install the 'sharity' package (google for it); it provides Solaris systems the ability to mount Windows shares

  • Desktop/Finder keeps rebooting after upgraded to Maverick (mac mini hooked up to a home theater system)

My desktop keeps rebooting ever since I upgraded to Mavericks.
Current setup, Mac Mini hooked up to home theater (Panasonic SC-HTB20) that is then hooked up to my Panasonic Plasma TV.
I usually leave my Mac Mini on running and at least once a day when I turn on the TV I can see that my desktop was rebooted. Firefox and Chrome will say that it wasn't shut down properly and if I want to restore my previous session. Also some times when I switched the input to watch TV and switch back, all my windows will be scattered out of place. For example Chrome will be in the top left hand corner to the point that it's almost minimized and I wouldn't be able to move it as well. Only thing I can do is close out these applications and relaunch them. It doesn't appear that the OS actually crashed, but more like the desktop/finder itself crashed. Cause once in a while I will switch back or turn on the TV and the screen will stay black for a few minutes then I'll see the cursor in the top right hand corner. After that I will start to see the desktop and my application start loading. It doesn't go through the regular process of rebooting where you see the Apple logo so I don't think the OS actually crashed but I could be wrong.
For some reason it seems like Maverick doesn't like the home theater system. An almost guarantee way to reproduce the issue is to wait for the home theater to turn off after it's been inactive for a while. If I turn it on the home theater to have the audio coming from it I will see the desktop goes black immediately then the whole desktop reboot process I mentioned above will kick in.
Never had any of these issues on 10.7 before I upgraded to Maverick.
Anybody have any suggestion? I really don't want to format and downgrade back to 10.7.
    Thanks

    Sounds like a kernel panic.
If you post the report we could have a go at deciphering it.
It would be in /Library/Logs/Diagnostic Reports.

  • Mac pro keeps rebooting

My Mac Pro 2.1 Keeps rebooting ramdomly. It seems to be more common when editing video.
    Any ideas anybody?
    Thanks in advance.

    Sorry for the slow reply.
My Mac Pro 2.1 screens go black and instantly reboots, sometimes it keeps rebooting until i hold the power button. I have reset pram, smc, renewed permissions and checked hard discs.
I am booting from a drive with lion 10.7.3. It also happens when I am booted from another drive running Snow Leopard.
I have also removed 4 gig of the 8 gig of ram and tried different configs of ram.
I have also disconnected everything except the keyboard, mouse and 2 monitors.
It is driving me bonkers because I cannot trust the mac Pro and I often lose work because it suddenly reboots.

  • Laserjet pro MFP M176n keeps rebooting

    Hi,
I have  a Color laserjet Pro MFP M176n printer. It ha snot been used for sometime.2 weeks ago when I printed something it had constant paper jam. I open the front door to remove the jam problem was not solved, I removed the ink cartridge to see if there was any piece of paper .Switch the apparatus off and  when i switch it on again it just wnt switch on and now it just keep rebooting and wont display anything.
I would liek to know how to solve this problem or if the printer has to be thrown out.
    Regards

    Hi @widadr,
I see that you are experiencing issues with the printer constantly rebooting. I will certainly do my best to help you.
Temporarily disconnect any cables from the printer, except the power cord, just to make sure there isn't any interference for the next few steps.
I would do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
Perform a power drain by disconnecting the power cord from the back of the printer and keeping the power button pressed for 30 seconds and in case of a power switch keep the switch in ON position for 30 seconds before reconnecting the power chord.
Try and update the printer's firmware by a USB connection if the issue persists. Software and Drivers.
I will send you another step to try in a private message.
In the forum beside your handle name just click on the envelope to view it.
