My trackpad seems to be malfunctioning.

It's almost as if it thinks I have another finger or two on it at all times (which I don't). Any tips/ troubleshooting advice would be helpful! I obviously don't want to have to get it replaced if I don't have to. I think I just ran out of warantee too (great when that happens).

Portables and Magic Trackpad: Jumpy or erratic trackpad operation
Does this occur with the power adapter connected, disconnected, or both?
Check your battery status. A battery that reaches its end of life may swell, creating pressure beneath the trackpad that will result in the symptoms you describe.

  • Macbook Air trackpad seems to be a little sticky, no damage or spill.

I haven't spilled anything or damaged my laptop, at all. It has been a little over a year since I purchased the Macbook Air, but I think my warranty or free service repairs or whatever have just recently expired. My trackpad seems to be sticky, like it is stuck down the slightest bit or something. It still works fine when I move my finger around on it, but the clicking is just a little difficult and irritating (especially right clicking). I was wondering if and how I could fix this. I have learned that if I click it fairly hard repeatedly it will work perfectly, but after a very short period of time it will go back to being seemingly slightly stuck down or sticky. Also, as the days pass, it is getting worse. Any help is greatly appreciated! I just don't know why this would happen if it has been treated with care. Thanks!

    Welcome to BlackBerry Support Forums
Please try a Battery pull restart , remove the battery while your device is Powered On , wait for a min. then re-insert it back. After reboot , try it again to see if your trackpad works .

  • My iChat video conference seems to be malfunctioning.

Every time I want to send a picture to the video conference, all I see is a black screen. Who ever is on the video chat with me also sees this black screen instead of the picture. I've tried to send differnet pictures, restarting iChat, restarting my Mac, and searched all over the internet for help but nothing seems to work. Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Hi,
Mountain Lion has Messages  (An iChat+ app)
It changes the name as it add the ability to send iMessages to the stable that is iChat.
Effectively it will be a new app and this stort of Upgrade is likely to sort out some issues.
I am suggesting a change to the Bandwidth as it can "nudge" the app in to writing to the releveant .plist (stored Preferences) without major intervention.
The Same with using the Acivity Monitor (Applications/Utilities) to see if the URLFileTransferAgent is showing up when it should not.
This shows up when text chats Files get "Stuck" and are listed as "Waiting" in the File Transfer Window.
The other possibility is that the iChat Theatre process that Shares the file as a Video Feed substitute is not doing it's thing.
However until we can exclude one issue it is pointless trying to address another.
If you have a Time Machine Back up then you could use that to Reinstall iChat from a time when you know it was working.
    Open the Applications Folder
Start up Time Machine so that it looks at the "History" of the Applications Folder.
Use the Arrows to go back in time.
Highlight the iChat App and use the Restore Button.
This will replace the "Current" version with an "Older" version.
This may work if the issue is with part of the App.
However Video feed is dealt with elsewhere.  (Does Photo Booth work for instance ?)

  • Help! trackpad seems messed up...

it's not a question of having the "accidental input" checked, because it's not...
the trackpad is really draggy and slow, it will freeze every few seconds. it's been like this since the purchase of the Macbook on Thursday.
it's possible to use it but every few inches it'll get stuck or unresponsive.
I tried updating to 10.4.6, to no avail. USB mouse works fine.
    any thoughts?
    thanks much!

    z,
Try resetting the power management unit. The PMU also handles some aspects of trackpad control. Here's the link to the instructions:

  • Trackpad seems to 'twitch' or stop working when I'm on youtube...

I have a Macbook 2009 unibody that I got in 2009. Whenever I go on a video site like youtube, or my fave thatguywiththeglasses.com, the trackpad either starts twitching or stop working all together, just randomly closing or making windows bigger. I use firefox and I've reset the PRAM but it still does it at times. Do I need to empty my cache again? I've really gotten annoyed at this point. I've actually tried using Safari for video sites, but sometimes it does the same thing. And sometimes now, it does the same thing when I open my Mail or iTunes. Please help!!!

  • PLEASE HELP, EA6500 and E2500 seem to be malfunctioning

I know this makes no sense, but I cant get either router to work.  I had been using my EA6300 for a while and it seemed to stop working yesterday.  So I then tried my old E32500 and cant get that to work either.  I uninstalled and reinstalled my wireless adapter drivers.  When I connect directly to the cable modem with my laptop Im fine.  The moment I try to use either router, I get nothing at all.  Any ideas?  Im at my wits end, it just doesnt make sense

Try to check if your computer can get online when wired to the router. Plug a PC/laptop to the router and check the connection. If the wired connection is okay but the wireless connection isn't working, I suggest you manually configure the router's wireless settings.

  • HT4623 After updating my iPhone 4, my phone seems to be malfunctioning.  Please help!

My iPhone 4, when turned on, shows a gray background and the word iPhone. I'm concerned I may make things worse. May head to a Verizon store for help!

Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the iPhone in to an Apple retail store.
    Best of luck.

  • My iPod touch only responds in a few spots or not at all. The touch pad seems to be malfunctioning, if it even is that. What can I do ?

All my iPod touch does is show white after I unscrewed it. Grrrrrr. Help me tell me what to do.

What do you mean by " after I unscrewed it."? Did you take it apart?
If it always shows a white screen and you can't turn it off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hout try a reset.
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
And then connect to your computer and restore.

  • My trackpad seems to be stuck in a clicked position.

    HELP ME

Did you follow the instructions in the link I provided in my first reply?
Also try triple clicking the home button and try going to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn Zoom off. You may have to use three fingers to scroll the screen to get there.

  • Ever since I installed the Safari 5.1.7 update my trackpad malfunctions.

Ever since I installed the Safari 5.1.7 update, my trackpad does not functing well. I know its not a faulty trackpad because it also malfunctions when I install a different mouse. The malfunction happens when I launch the Safari application. How do I fix this? Is there a way to undo a software update?

Try rebooting into Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. I'm thinking one or more may have become corrupt. Have you done any basic troubleshooting such as removing he MTP's batteries and restarting it or restarting the computer or anything else?
Also PLEASE  use the Profile Update , otherwise we cannot tell anything about your system which makes it extremely difficult to troubleshoot.

  • Trackpad / mouse click control degrades or corrupts within an hour or longer

Basically, over an hour, sometimes longer - the click of the mouse / trackpad ceases to have any effect.  Using an external mouse, the left-click also has no effect.  Right-click on the external mouse / Ctrl-click on the trackpad generally continues to work. I have generally been in the middle of something so I would proceed as far as I could using only the right-click.
(Of interest, sometimes - like in this forum - the right-click on my mouse and the ctrl-click on the trackpad do not do exactly the same thing - but I think that is just how the page has been coded.)
I am still able to move the pointer anywhere on the screen, that does not seem to be a problem.
I have tried to open the system preferences to see if something was odd in the mouse settings but have been unable to get to the specific panel without the click function.
This is the second time I have drafted this post.  The first time, the problem occurred and I was unable to click the "post message" button at the end of the form.
The only way I can find to fix the problem is to restart my Macbook.  But the problem can recur in less than an hour - I had just restarted before I started the first draft of this post.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour?  Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Barney, thanks for the response.
I went through the "resetting the SMC" troubleshooting before resetting the SMC.  The very last thing they suggested I try was shutting down the MacBook and removing and then replacing the battery.
I could not do that.  As soon as I lifted up the MacBook to get at the battery bay, I could see that the battery was swollen to the point that it (the battery) was no longer sitting flush with the bottom of the Macbook.
I have seen this before it happened when my MacBook was still under AppleCare - that time I discovered it while dusting off my computer area.  That time, they just replaced the battery.
I remembered having read something about the battery swelling recently, and scanned the SMC resetting article several time before returning to your response, where of course I found it.
Seems like you hit on the issue right away: swollen battery which is (I am assuming) placing pressure on the trackpad which is eventually malfunctioning.
My MacBook's AppleCare has expired.  How do I assess whether to buy a replacement battery or just bite the bullet and get another computer - obviously an unplanned computer purchase wouldn't be a thrilling option, but I also don't want to waste money on a battery just to be forced to purchase another computer soon anyway :-/
