NAC 802.1x: VLAN assignment via RADIUS

I'm deploy a 802.1x NAC solution. Users authenticate ok but the VLAN is not assigned to the port.
The RADIUS server send the attributes to the NAD (switch 3560). I see the following lines in the radius debug output:
02:49:08: RADIUS: Received from id 1645/4 192.168.1.1:1645, Access-Accept, len 267
02:49:08: RADIUS: authenticator AB 90 94 95 D0 86 04 E5 - D3 AC 43 21 C0 31 29 EB
02:49:08: RADIUS: Session-Timeout [27] 6 3600
02:49:08: RADIUS: Termination-Action [29] 6 1
02:49:08: RADIUS: Tunnel-Type [64] 6 01:Unsupported [13]
02:49:08: RADIUS: Tunnel-Medium-Type [65] 6 01:Unsupported [6]
02:49:08: RADIUS: Tunnel-Private-Group[81] 10 01:"healthy"
02:49:08: RADIUS: Vendor, Cisco [26] 29
02:49:08: RADIUS: Cisco AVpair [1] 23 "posture-token=Healthy"
I suppose that the error appears because the attributes 64 and 65 are "Unsupported". Is it right?
In RADIUS server I configure:
attribute 64 = VLAN (13)
attribute 65 = 802 (6)
Below I attach switch configuration. The "healthy" vlan is configured in this one.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks and regards.

I change the IOS and all work fine. The IOS must have the feature "NAC - L2 IEEE 802.1x".
Other user has the same problem, he posted the question with the following subject: "NAC L2 802.1x VLAN assignment".In this question the problem is better described.

  • Assign building-specific VLAN via 802.1X vlan assignment

    Hi all
We plan to implement 802.1X. We have several departments. Each department is using several VLANs, depending on which building the machine is.
If a machine/user from department A connects in building A, it should receive VLAN 10 via 802.1X vlan assignment. If the same machine/user connects in building B, it should receive VLAN 20.
Is this possible with 802.1X vlan assignment?
    Many thanks
    regards
    Stefan

Stefan- It is possible if you use the VLAN name instead of the vlan #. That means you will just have to be consistent with your Vlan names for each location. So lets say you set up authenticated users to go to the "AuthUser" vlan. On your switches you would set up:
    AuthUser=vlan 10 in Bldg A
    AuthUser=vlan 20 in Bldg B
    etc...
Just know that if someone unknowingly changes the vlan name on the switch that it will break dot1x, so make sure your fellow engineers know the significance of the name.
    Good luck with your implementation!

  • Dynamic VLAN Assignment with RADIUS Server and Aironet Access Points

    Hi Guys,
I would like to go for "Dynamic VLAN Assignment with RADIUS Server and Aironet Access Points 1300". I want the AP to broadcast only 1 SSID. The client find the SSID ->put in his user credential->Raudius athentication->assign him to an specific vlan based on his groupship.
The problem here is that I don't have a AP controller but only configurable Aironet Access Points 1300. I can connect to the radius server, but I am not sure how to confirgure the AP's port, radio port, vlan and SSID.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008076317c.shtml#switch
    I go through some references:
    3.5  RADIUS-Based VLAN Access Control
As discussed earlier, each SSID is mapped to a default VLAN-ID on the wired side. The IT administrator may wish to impose back end (such as RADIUS)-based VLAN access control using 802.1X or MAC address authentication mechanisms. For example, if the WLAN is set up such that all VLANs use 802.1X and similar encryption mechanisms for WLAN user access, then a user can "hop" from one VLAN to another by simply changing the SSID and successfully authenticating to the access point (using 802.1X). This may not be preferred if the WLAN user is confined to a particular VLAN.
There are two different ways to implement RADIUS-based VLAN access control features:
    1. RADIUS-based SSID access control: Upon successful 802.1X or MAC address authentication, the RADIUS server passes back the allowed SSID list for the WLAN user to the access point or bridge. If the user used an SSID on the allowed SSID list, then the user is allowed to associate to the WLAN. Otherwise, the user is disassociated from the access point or bridge.
    2. RADIUS-based VLAN assignment: Upon successful 802.1X or MAC address authentication, the RADIUS server assigns the user to a predetermined VLAN-ID on the wired side. The SSID used for WLAN access doesn't matter because the user is always assigned to this predetermined VLAN-ID.

    Thanks.

I'm not sure if the Autonomous APs have the option for AAA Override.  On the WLC, I can go into the BSSID, Security, Advanced, and there's a checkbox that I would check to allow a Radius server to send back the VLAN.
I did a little research and it looks like the 1300 may give this option but instead is defined as "VLAN Override".  I've found the release notes for 12.3(7)JA5 (not sure what version you're running) that give mention and a link to configuring EAP on page 4: http://www.ciscosystems.ch/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/1300/release/notes/o37ja5rn.pdf

  • WLC- dynamic Vlan assignment with Radius

Hello, we would like to use this feature in our company and because of that I am now testing it. But I found one problem.
I created one testing SSID and two Vlans on WLC. On ACS I use an IETF atributes (064,065,081) for my account and I am changing Vlan ID (081) during testing.
It works with LEAP but when I use PEAP-GTC (which we use commonly in our company) the ip address is not assigned properly (ip which was assigned before remains).
    Could you please help me?

There is good document which explains how to configure Dynamic VLAN Assignment with RADIUS Server and Wireless LAN Controller. This will help you. You will find the document at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008076317c.shtml

  • 802.1x dynamic VLAN assignment with Radius NPS Server

I can NOT get the NPS and Cisco 3550 switch to drop the authenticated user in a VLAN.
    I have followed this documentation,
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd314181(v=ws.10).aspx
that basically says to use these Radius attributes,
    Tunnel-Medium-Type : 802
    Tunnel-Pvt-Group-ID  :  My_VLAN_Number  (also tried VLAN name)
    Tunnel-Type  : VLAN
There is some Cisco documentation that says to use Vendor Specific attributes Cisco-AV-Pair,
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2950/software/release/12-1_19_ea1/configuration/guide/2950scg/swauthen.html#wpxref83693
and I have also tried that,
    cisco-avpair= "tunnel-type(#64)=VLAN(13)"
    cisco-avpair= "tunnel-medium-type(#65)=802 media(6)"
    cisco-avpair= "tunnel-private-group-ID(#81)=vlanid"
My user authenticates on the port fine, but doesn't get put into a VLAN.  If I add "sw acc vlan 110"  then the user authenticates and then does get an IP address in that VLAN and all is well.
Anybody know how to get dynamic VLAN assignment working with NPS?

  • Dynamic VLAN-Assignment from RADIUS with Aironet 1242AG doesn't work properly

    Hello All,
our setting is to assign VLANs dynamically from RADIUS (freeradius) to Clients connected to the 1242 Access-Points with one SSID. We have Firmware
    12.4(10b)JA/JDA on the Aironet 1242.
The clients should be connected to one of three VLANs - one for staff, one for students and one for guests. I use the Web-Interface of
the 1242, because I'm not very familiar with IOS cli.
After assigning the first VLAN to the SSID -> click Accept, assigning the second VLAN to the SSID (overwriting the previous one) -> click Accept,
assigning the third VLAN to SSID (overwriting again) -> click Accept,  the assignment of VLANs works really fine,
(the only thing i change on the page is VLAN, the SSID is set to mandatory WPAv2)
    BUT...
when the 1242 is rebooted (due a building power off or similar) it doesn't work anymore. Clients end up in an endless authentication loop.
After doing the procedure again from above - assigning all VLANs sequently once, it works fine again !  till next reboot...
All VLANs have same encryption, cypher, TKIP+AES CCM. On the Cisco-Site I found a command, which i also tried with no success:
'aaa authorization network default group radius'.
I also tried to save the working config and load it into the 1242 again, this also did not work.
It seems that i'm doing something wrong, but what ?
    Thanks for some help,
    Frank

All you really need to do is make sure the subinterfaces/vlans are created for each VLAN you need, then have radius push down IETF attributes 64, 65, and 81.

  • PPPoX Virtual-Template assignment via Radius Attribute

I'd like to optionally apply ACLs to PPP users (PPPoX).  I see two strategies: a) apply an ACL directly via radius attributes or b) define the ACL in the Virtual-Template on the BRAS and determine the Virtual-Template ID via radius attribute.  Has anyone done this?  If so, any suggestions on the best way to move forward?  I think I'd prefer option B as I could also use it to assign VRFs etc (one Virtual-Template per VRF).
    TIA

The only way I could get this to work is have the ACS server reference an ACL configured on the switch via name or number and send in the filter-id attribute.  On the switch I configured the default setting for attribute 11 to apply inbound "
radius-server attribute 11 default direction in".  If you do a "sh authentication sessions interface gx/x" it'll show the filter-ID setting but if you do a "show ip interface gx/x" it still shows the default-acl being applied.  It works, just a bit confusing because of that default-acl still showing up.  Anyone else experience the same?

  • 802.1x VLAN assignment + Microsoft IAS

    Hello,
Here is what I am tring to do:
a Windows XP client is authenticating via 802.1x to a cisco switch. The switch "talks" to a IAS radius serveur (microsoft). That works fine, the user can login and the port opens up. Cisco developed a feature in a recent software release whereby the radius server can also tell the switch what VLAN to place the freshly-authenticated port in (that's the part I can't get to work - the fact that I am totally new to Radius probably doesn't help either). I know that the switch expects the following parameters within the Access-accept:
    a) Tunnel-Type(#64)=VLAN (13)
    b) Tunnel-Medium-Type(#65)=802 (6)
    c) Tunnel-Private-Group-ID(#81)=VLANID
How Can I define these parameters in IAS ? I tried severals things but know one worked. If someone has experience, please let me know .... Thanx !
    Bastien

    thanx for your answer.
    Thanx for your answer.
I tried that but I think I made mistakes because it
    doesn't work.
What I need to know is what I have to enter precisely :
    - Which kind of attribute ? Cisco AVPAIR or radius vendor
specific attribute or something else ?
    - Which value in the field : Tunnel-Type(#64) or just 64
    or just Tunnel-Type or just #64 or 13 ?
    - Which value in the field atttribute format ? string,
    decimal or hexadecimal ?
    Thanx very much !!

  • 802.1x Port Authentication via RADIUS

I am investigating implementing 802.1x port authentication on our network.
I have a test LAN with a Catalyst 2950 switch and 2 Win XP workstations, (I know its pretty basic, but should be enough for testing purposes). One of these XP PCs is running a Win32 RADIUS server and the other has been configured for 802.1x authentication with MD5-Challenge. Both switch ports are configured for the default vlan and can ping each other.
I have configured the switch with the following commands
    aaa new-model
aaa authentication dot1x default group radius
    dot1x system-auth-control
    radius-server host x.x.x.x key test
and the port to be authorised has been configured with
    dot1x port-control auto
As far as I can tell this is all I need to configure on the switch, please correct me if I am wrong.
When I plug the PC into the port I get the request to enter login details, which I do, the RADIUS server sees the request but rejects it, because 'the password wasn’t available'. Here is the output from the request, but there isnt any password field and I know there should be as the RADIUS server comes with a test utility and the output from that is similar to below, but the password field is included. I have removed IP/MAC addresses.

Again there doesn’t appear to be a password, shouldn't I see one?
Ultimately we will be using a Unix RADIUS server but for testing purposes I have just configured an eval version of Clearbox's RADIUS server. I've tried others as I thought the problem maybe the software, but I get similar problems regardless. If anyone can recommend better Win32 software, please do so.
I'm struggling to figure out where the problem is, the XP machine, the switch or the RADIUS server. Any advice would be appreciated as it's getting quite frustrating.

These are dot1x event debugs, so you wouldn't see this with that debug. The closest thing to seeing it would be to debug radius on the switch, and the password would be contained in RADIUS Attribute[79]. The switch uses this attribute to replay the EAP message (unmodified) to a RADIUS server. You might see it, but it's encrytped, so it might not buy you much. I'm sure you can imagine from a security point of view why the switch won't/shouldn't have this much visibility into this ;-).
    I would recommend either:
    a) Double-checking your RADIUS setup and logs to find out why the user failed. (double-check the RADIUS key configured on the switch too .. it must match).
    b) Downloading a third-party supplicant from Meetinghouse or Funk to use as a control.
Eval copies are available on their websites.
    Hope this helps,

  • 802.1x with Vlan assignment and IP phone and PC

I have a Catalyst 4510R and I want to im plement 802.1x with dynamic VLAN assignment via Radius server. I am going to plug to switch ports Cisco IP phones and PCs (PCs are plugged in the IP phone).
For this implementation I need to configure the switch port in mode trunk because I have voice vlan corresponding IP phone and data vlan corresponding to PC.
However I have read that I can not enable 802.1x on a trunk port.
    How could I configure this?
I need that when the PC is authenticated correctly is assigned to his cooresponding data vlan and the IP phone is in the voice vlan.
    Thanks

You should configure the port as an access port with an aux-vlan. Here's an example:
    interface GigabitEthernet2/2
    switchport access vlan 701
    switchport mode access
    switchport voice vlan 702
    load-interval 30
    qos trust device cisco-phone
    qos trust cos
    auto qos voip cisco-phone
    dot1x pae authenticator
    dot1x port-control auto
    tx-queue 3
    bandwidth percent 33
    priority high
    shape percent 33
    spanning-tree portfast
    spanning-tree bpduguard enable
    service-policy output autoqos-voip-policy
    Hope this helps,

  • Dynamic VLAN assignment on SG300

Cisco documentation states that dynamic vlan assignment via RADIUS should provide the following IETF values:
The RADIUS user attributes used for the VLAN ID assignment are:
IETF 64 (Tunnel Type)—Set this to VLAN.
IETF 65 (Tunnel Medium Type)—Set this to 802
IETF 81 (Tunnel Private Group ID)—Set this to VLAN ID
I have done so with an Aruba Clearpass RADIUS server - but the Access-Accept message being sent below:
    Radius:IETF:Tunnel-Medium-Type     6
    Radius:IETF:Tunnel-Private-Group-Id     4
    Radius:IETF:Tunnel-Type     13
is being received by the SG300 in some way that's not being interpreted correctly. Log files indicate that the IETF values are not what is expected:
07-Aug-2014 18:58:41 :%SEC-W-SUPPLICANTUNAUTHORIZED: username teststudent with MAC 00:11:25:d8:42:83 was rejected on port gi2 because Radius accept message does not contain VLAN ID

    07-Aug-2014 18:58:41 :%AAAEAP-W-RADIUSREPLY: Invalid attribute 64 ignored - tag should be 0
Is there something I'm missing here? These same values sent by the Clearpass RADIUS server are working for other switches such as Extreme and Brocade.

  • Cisco WLC5508 Dynamic VLAN assignment error

    Hi All,
We have a HA (SSO) WLC controller pair in two DC's with the Management Interface managing the AP's. The AP's are located in the Campus LAN and the Campus and DC networks are seperated by a L3 boundary.
The plan is for one of the WLAN's to provide Dynamic VLAN Assignment via radius as a test I wanted to use the existing Management interface to bind to the WLAN, but since working through the following Document ID: 71683 one thing I noticed whilst working through the the document states that "it is required that the VLAN-ID configured under the IETF 81 (Tunnel-Private-Group-ID) field of the RADIUS server exist on the WLC"
If the above statement is true and we don't stretch VLAN's between the Campus LAN and the DC network due to the L3 boundary does this mean that Dynamic VLAN assignment won't be achievable?  When testing a client connection and debugging the result I receive the following:-

I've sanitised some of the debug output to protect the username but the net result is no IP address assigned to the client and unable to connect to the network.
Would appreciate any guidance as to whether the Wireless Client VLAN's need to be interfaces on the WLC in order to work or whether the likes of Flexconnect could alleviate the L3 boundary?
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind regards,
    Mark

    Hi All,
After playing with Flexconnect I managed to get the dynamic vlan assignment working.
Need to create the Flexconnect Group add in the AP's to the gorup and then select the ACL Mapping tab > AAA VLAN-ACL mapping and added in the VLAN of my VLAN that my Tunnel-Group-ID (VLAN ID) had assigned to me.
Client connected and received the correct IP configuration.
    Thanks
    Mark

  • 802.1X for wired environments using Radius/ACS for Dynamic Vlan Assignment

802.1X for wired environments  using Radius/ACS for Dynamic Vlan Assignment
Could someone please provide me with a simplest set of configuration steps to fire up Radius in ACS and 802.1X for dynamic vlan assignment. The objective is to roll out NAC L2 OOB using the 802.1X method for dymamic vlan assignments.
    If possible show:
    1. ACS/Radius Configurations.
    2. End User Switch Configurations
    Variables:
    Switch A
    MAC Address aaaa.bbbb.cccc     Vlan 10
                bbbb.cccc.dddd     Vlan 20
Also, if someone posts the Pros and Cons of using Radius/ACS/802.1X for Dynamic Vlan Assignments.
Other technology sets that can be used for Dynamic Vlan assignment EXCEPT from deprecated/obsolete VMPS.
    Thanks in advance. .

    Hi Guys,
Hmmm, well if your just looking for Mac based authentication the good news is that is very easy.  Just set create your Radius server, ACS, FreeRadius, Steelbelted radius etc.  Then create user with the name of the Mac address, in other words if the mac address is 0012.0021.1122 the the name would be 001200211122 and the password would be the mac address.  Then you set the vlan and tunnel stuff, like so tunnel-Type would be vlan, Tunnel-medium would be 802 and Tunnel-Private-Group-ID is the name of the vlan(not the vlan number)
So for the Cisco ACS 4.x you would create a user as specified above, fill in all the password boxes with MAC address, I believe the mac has to be all lower case in the name and the password.  Then check the Separate(Chap/MS-Chap/ARAP) box.  Then you pick the group the machine belongs to, the group is the part that defines what vlan it is on.
Before you create the user, create the group with info I wrote above and in addition specify the Service-Type as Authenticate Only.
Freeradius is a bit harder to configure the specifics and I am just now testing a freeradius server so I do not know the process for Machine authentication.
If, however, you are trying to authenticate a user that gets a bit trickier and is not so straight forward.

  • Send vlan via Radius with 802.1x Authentication

    Hi all.
I am trying to set up 802.1x authentication using Windows XP Supplicant, Catalyst 2950 and FreeRadius as radius server.
I can login correctly so I have the port in Authorized mode, but I can't download the vlan id through the radius server.
Reading docs, I have found these attributes:
    cisco-avpair="tunnel-type(#64)=VLAN(13)"
    cisco-avpair="tunnel-medium-type(#65)=802 media(6)"
cisco-avpair="tunnel-private-group-ID(#81)=2" (2 is my vlan id)
but when I insert these into radius DB (I have also tryed with text file config...) I can see from Radius debugs that only the first one (cisco-avpair="tunnel-type(#64)=VLAN(13)" is passed in the access-accept packet.
    Here are some outputs:
    Sending Access-Challenge of id 80 to 128.0.0.21:1812
    Cisco-AVPair = "tunnel-type=VLAN"
    EAP-Message = 0x0101001604103ee52f729eb199689ef4fc77a18a6a08
    Message-Authenticator = 0x00000000000000000000000000000000
    State = 0xf88b9673c199cb13def96563250cf8a7
I issued a "debug radius" on the switch Catalyst 2950 also, and the output is:
    02:49:39: RADIUS: Received from id 73 128.0.0.243:1812, Access-Accept, len 129
    02:49:39: Attribute 26 75 0000000901457475
    02:49:39: Attribute 79 6 03010004
    02:49:39: Attribute 80 18 1ABB3507
    02:49:39: Attribute 1 10 74657374
    02:49:39: RADIUS: EAP-login: length of eap packet = 4
02:49:39: RADIUS: EAP-login: radius didn't send any vlan
so I can see that radius is not sending anything about vlan...
Has anyone alredy tried this set up?
    Thank you in advance.
    Massimo Magnani.

OK, so I may have glossed over that before. From your debug post, you had:
    Cisco-AVPair = "tunnel-type=VLAN"
Unless I'm missing something, that looks like a VSA (or RADIUS Attribute [26\9\1].
You don't need VSAs for VLAN Assignment. You can do this with three standard RADIUS Attributes. Here they are (and an example of what they should look like):
    [64] Tunnel-Type – “VLAN” (13)
    [65] Tunnel-Medium-Type – “802” (6)
    [81] Tunnel-Private-Group-ID - "" OR ""
They are defined in RFC 2868.
    Hope this helps,
