Need advice on retrieving Bitlocker Key or External Key File Location

My Windows 8.1 PC includes a system drive and data drives. All the drivers were encrypted using Bitlocker with the data drives set for autounlock.
I recently decrypted the system drive (without decrypting the data drives, <very bad>) and reinstalled the OS, after which my data drives required the Bitlocker recovery key to unlock.
However, I had "backed up" the recovery keys to my Microsoft account but now I cannot find them.
I have tried to use the "manage-bde" command at the console to obtain the Recovery Keys but I am only getting the Numerical Password ID and the External Key File Name. Can anyone provide advice on how I can retrieve the recovery passwords
or the External Key File location?
Before I had set the data drives to autounlock I had used a recovery password to unlock the drives. However, now when I try to unlock the data drives only the recovery key (which I don't have) is being requested not the password.
Thanks.

Hi HMcBean,
How did you back up the BitLocker recovery key? To local computer, flash driver or Microsoft account?
If you backed up the recovery key to a Microsoft account, please refer to the following article to find it.

  • Need advice in setting up a portable external hard drive

Since I travel and am away from home for 4-6 months of the year, I would like to to set up an external drive which I can carry with me and will hopefully contain everything I could possibly need to back up and troubleshoot the iBook while away from home. Toward that end, I have purchased a registered copy of Super Duper, a 250 GB Western Digital notebook drive, and a firewire enclosure from OWC with the Oxford 911+. I have also read the X Lab's Backup and Recovery FAQs and a number of discussion threads. But I have never done anything like this before, and would welcome any advice I could get on specifically how to set up and partition the drive in the best possible way.
Because the internal drive is rapidly filling up with music and photos, I am thinking that the partition for the bootable clone should match the size of the internal drive, which is 120GB.
There are a lot of system discs which came with the iBook, which is the very first iBook G4 that came after the ibook G3. I upgraded the OS to Tiger from Panther, so I don't think I would need to worry about the original 3 Panther discs that contained the OS. But there is a separate disc for the AHT and 8 Software Restore discs as well as iLife 06. I know I can burn safety copies to carry around, but if there is a way to do it, I would like to have the safety copies on the external hard drive. At least if that would be OK with Apple's licensing agreement.
Also, my only diagnostic tools right now are the Apple Hardware Test and the Tech Tool Deluxe disc that came with Applecare. But in the future I might need to acquire others such as Tech Tool Pro, Disc Warrior, Data Rescue II, and possibly something else, so I would want to have my drive set up so that I would be able to boot from any of these.
Part of the drive will just be for extra storage space, in case the internal drive starts to get too full, and some media files will need to be archived to the external drive.
Any help, suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance!

Thanks to both of you for your responses!
It sounds like there may be a consensus on making one partition the size of the iBook's internal hard drive, but I am still not at all certain whether the rest of the drive should be one partition or more than one partition. I probably didn't make myself very clear when I posed the question because I'm not sure I know enough to ask an intelligent question. But I think I need to ask a lot of questions because there is so much that I don't know.
One thing I should mention--I have never in my life partitioned a drive so I really have no idea what's desirable, what's not, or really where to start. So perhaps I should try to describe my concerns a bit better.
Because of a highly unpredictable travel schedule, there is a real possibility of being stuck away from home for an extended period of time. For that reason, I want to be prepared for any possible computer disaster. So that means I want to be able to do on the road the exact same things I can do at home where I have all my system discs and diagnostic tools.
I don't really want to carry the originals around--I'd rather leave them at home locked up in my fire proof safe. I could burn copies to CD's and DVD's, but that would result in a pretty big pile of discs to carry around. Also, sometimes the CD's and DVD's just turn into little gold frisbees over time, and I would hate to need one and find out it had gone south and was unusable. So I had the idea of incorporating everything onto the external hard drive so that if it came to it, I could even do an erase and install.
This may be overkill, but I am very paranoid. I am a fair klutz when it comes to computers. I managed to corrupt my OS twice last year. The first time I was trying to reset my password on the iBook and got completely locked out. The second time I was trying to do an Archive and Install on the MBP and made a real hash of it. So I have a real fear of somehow corrupting the software on the iBook and possibly on the clone as well. So I would like to be prepared for the worst possible disaster.
I like the idea of a separate partition for the Tiger OS, the AHT and Tech Tool Deluxe and any others I may acquire. And the Tiger OS would just be what is on the Tiger retail DVD that I have. One question--the DVD just says Version 10.4. Should I update it to 10.4.11 or just leave it as is?
I'm also wondering about a partition for the software that originally came bundled with the iBook and iLife 06? If I ever had to do an erase and install, I would really want to have this. Hopefully I won't--now that there is actually data on the iBook other than the address book and bookmarks, I am beginning to realize why it's only something to do as a last resort. But I would feel better if I had the option far from home. But if it makes no sense to install these on the external drive, would it be possible to burn a DVD of them on the MBP instead of all those CD's?
Also, how do the partitions show up in Disk Utility? Do you give the partitions names? I really don't have a very good idea how all of this works. As I understand it, I have to partition using the Apple Partition Map and I have to get it right the first time, as you can't change the partitions later without having to erase everything.
Oh yes, I did order the power supply for the drive--thanks to reading about that in another post.
Really, I have been trying to research all this, but so often I don't really understand everything I read. I very much appreciate both of you taking the time to help me with this project.
    Many thanks!

  • Need advice: how to work from an external drive

I understand from my research that I can save my Logic document (and its inclusive audio files) to an external hard drive and it will take some of the load off of the computer's internal drive, etc. I don't use loops much, but I also read that the loops can be put on an external drive as well. What isn't clear to me is the use of effects (plug-ins). Can they be put on the external drive too?
In any case, will just having my Logic document (and its inclusive audio files) on an external hard drive make a significant improvement in performance while recording and mixing?

My new external hard drive does have eSATA, but my MacBook Pro does not.
You need an ExpressCard 34 which your eSATA drive will connect to, like this one (there are several available which are not expensive)
    http://www.barefeats.com/hard71.html
This also frees up your firewire port for your audio interface and/or any other firewire devices you may add.

  • Need Advice...What's the best document file app out there?

Need some advice!! I am a med student and for my classes I need a file app where I can download and store powerpoint, word docs that the professor gives us as our notes! How can I transfer them and save them on my ipad via a doc app?? Also, is there an app that also can be a document reader...that does both? Would appreciate the help!!

GoodReader just added a feature where you can store documents for Pages, Numbers and Keynote in multi-level folders in GoodReader and then open them in the corresponding iWork app. They get added to the file list but still remain in the GoodReader folders. They can be viewed in GoodReader and edited in iWork. I don't believe you can restore edited documents.
In iTunes the complete folders can be saved to OSX disk. You cannot add files directly to the folders in iTunes. You have to sync them individually and then add them to the folders once on the iPad.

  • Need advice on how to import / store existing image files into LR etc.

    Hi,
I am just beginning to use LR 2.3 and I want to start correctly....
I have been pondering how to begin and I was hoping some of you might point me in the right direction.
    1. I have all of my RAW files on my Mac's desktop and they are organized at the top level by each of the 2 cameras they were taken with and then the sub folders of each organized chronologically with each subfolder titled by the location or subject of the images matter within each folder.
I want to import these into LightRoom 2.3 in a manner which will preserve this taxonomy. I also want to convert these RAW images into DNG files on import. How do I set up LR2 to do this?
    2. I want the Lightroom files and the image files to live on my external Caldigit eSATA VR drive. This drive is actually 2 disks set to mirror as hardware RAID 1 so it is essence its own backup if one disk dies. How do I point LR to create and store the DNG files on this external drive and then set LR2 to back up so that the LR datafiles also live there? Would you say this is a good way to set this up or should the LR datafiles ( previews etc. live with LR on the OS drive??
Is RAID 1 as safe as backing up to 2 different HD's?
Is it best to convert to DNG ( I like the fact that any LR image data is stored with the DNG and is not a sidecar file which could get seperated) or convert to DNG with orginal RAW file incorporated? How massive do these get?
Is it best to use LR2's backup utility and exclude the LR data from the Time Machine backup?
    Sory for the long question...

On the Import Photos Screen, pick "Copy photos as Digital Negative(DNG) and add to catalog" from File Handling drop-down at top of screen.
If your photos are organised as:
    Photos - Camera 1 ...
    - Camera 2 ...
then Lightroom will reflect that folder view in its Folders panel. Also, when converting to DNG you get to choose destination folder (answers part of your question 2) and multiple organisation choices including "Organize by Original Folder"
(Take a look at Chapter 4 of the help file for more information: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Lightroom/2.0/lightroom_2_help.pdf)
    2. I want the Lightoom files and the image files....
Create your catalog on that drive. Move your images to that drive before importing them, and when converting to DNG on import, choose a folder on that drive as destination on import screen.
    >Is RAID 1 as safe as backing up to 2 different HD's?
No. RAID 1 is a simple mirror of 1 drive on another; so if you delete a file on drive, it is also deleted from both drives. Likewise, if a file is corrupted on one drive it will also be corrupted on the mirror. RAID 1 is good as a safeguard against single-drive failure; your data will be available from the remaining drive, but it is not a safeguard against user error or file corruption.

  • I need advice (for the best way to exporting uncompressed files)

Using Final Cut Pro to animation(2D) project(30fps), I've experienced a problem exporting uncompressed TGA image sequence files.
    Here's the workflow I use:
    File> Export> QT Conversion> Image Sequence> Options> TGA, uncompressed 8bit, millions of color, 30 fps> OK
After exporting a files, I supposed to get 1MB each(file size), but I got less than 1MB each(file size). It tells us that those are compressed files. The size of files is random. when I use Avid Nitris there is no problem but it is different with the Final Cut Pro.
Do you know what is the best way to exporting uncompressed TGA image sequence files out of FCP? (for Best Quality Output)
    Thank you in advance.
    Jasmine

    Patrick,
I'm sorry it has taken me so long to reply you. I can't post your request, because Avid is not here. So I will post another example, and I have another question. This is the nearset approach to problem. See below images.
I use QuickTime 7.1 and Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 in the PowerMac G5 2.0 Ghz.
    1. File > Export > QT Converstion > Image Sequence > Options > TGA, 30, Best Depth
I supposed to get 1MB each, but I got less than 1MB each. It tells us that those are compressed files, and shows up low quality images. (besides, The size of files is random.)
    2. File > Export > QT Converstion > Image Sequence > Options > TIFF, 30, Best Depth (Compression: None)
Finally, I was a great success See the files size: all 1MB each. I can get the result that I want/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png
OK, now question, I will tell you.
Why have a different result? (TGA vs TIFF)
'TIFF options' have a compression option, but 'TGA options' haven't it. So 'TGA image sequence' can't make uncompressed files. For what reason? Do you know any particular reason?
: TGA Options haven't compression option.
: TIFF Options have a compression option.
What's the 'Little Endian'? I don't know this option: Little Endian.
Could you explain that for me, please? Lay it all out for me, please..
    Thank you for your kindness,
    Jasmine

  • HTTPs sender adapter to pick file from a external HTTP file location

    Hi,
The FTP Adapter will do the job for you. Just create a File Communication Channel and change Transport Protocol to FTP. Since you mentioned that the file is non-xml, in the Message Protocol, choose, File Content Conversion.

  • Refernce files and external edited files

    Hello,
i am testing Aperture and i was wondering if it was possible to use only refernced files.
in my Library there are only refernced files. But if I use PS to edit an files - aperture creates a working copy that will be editet an after PS saved the file Aperture as the updated copy stored in the library.
the library-file is increasing the amount of the filesize of the saved picture.
Is there anyway not to save the edited file in the library but have it as a refernced file in the library while using that very nice workflow?
    Thanks
    Maverick

    Is this true???
My experience is that Ap creates either psd or tif file and exports it out to PS. Once editing is done, Ap reimports the edited files into Ap Library and not just modification data (since PS does change the image at pixel level, not non-destructive). The result is each tif/psd file is increasing the library size by 50+mb, depending on size of your original image.
Since I only use referenced masters, would you please be kind enough to tell me what option/steps I need to take so that, either the externally edited file gets automatically stored in the folder that the master file is, or if Ap truly only keep mod data, how I do that?
Currently, I export manually, and edit the file directly in PS and save, then re-import the edited image as referenced master and stack with the original raw. Cumbersome, but the file stays referenced in my folder where the original raw file is.
    Thanks...

    Hi Ridgewood,
As my point of viewer, the BitLocker Automatic unlock volume is also protected by BitLocker Disk Encryption. The user encrypted information is stored in the registry and volume metadata. After a user unlocks the operating system volume, BitLocker uses the
encrypted information to unlock the data volume automatically.
After the reinstallation of the system, the encrypted information is lost and BitLocker can’t unlock the data volume automatically.
Every volume has own recovery key.
As mentioned in your post, the data drive require the recovery key to unlock.
I suggest you to double-check the OneDrive and try to find out where did you store the recovery key.
If you can’t find the recovery key, we can’t help you to decrypt the data volume.

  • After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external back-up? Following Apple advice for use of Migration Assistant did not work creating similar issues leading to clean install.

After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external hard drive?
Following Apple advice I used Migration Assistant which crashed new system twice which is why I had to clean install Lion in the first place.
Is there a sure way of doing it?
I have only a few programs that I will have to install myself and that should not be a problem.
I just want my data, music and photos back where I can use them.

Time machine backups. I went to migration assistant a few hours ago and limited my selection to "users", no need for applications, settings and other files.  Stuff started moving over at a fast pace but has now seemed to stall.
I will let it run overnight as there are lots of songs and photos as well as a few movies.
If that does not work, then I will go into TM and try restore. I have restored some things in the past such a mail files and it has worked well.
The Apple fellow at the store told me to go right into TM, he may have had a point. I'll get it eventually.

  • Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

    Hi
After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
    Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
    Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
    update:
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

    Hi,
I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?
Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.
I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

Hello, I need help to retrieve deleted information to partition an external hard drive. What should I do?

I'm not about the question, and giving you the right answer requires me to ask a few more questions.
Do you want to retrieve deleted information for future usage, or to completely delete a partition? The latter is straightforward: simply erase the partition. The former is more complicated: it's very difficult, even using available commercial software, to recover deleted information. If the data is important, you may want to contact a professional like DriveSavers. It won't be cheap.

If your hard drive can be detected and shows up as a drive letter in my computer but you can't access your files, then you can recover your data off it with data recovery software easily. This way is the easiest and the most inexpensive way to recover your data.If you bring it to a computer repair shop that is available for data recovery servise, they will cost you $500-1000 or more.Hmm, a lot of money.
I managed to recover data from crashed hard drive with Tenorshare Data Recovery. If needed, you can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your data can be recovered. It will show you thumbnails for recoverable pictures.

  • 6290 how lock keys in external Display

    Hi All,
Could you please advice me on how to lock keys in external display?
What Nokia suggested in the manual does not work not either for internal keyboard.
    current firmware is: V 03.03 /09-03-07.RM-176
    Thanking you in advance

Wow, you got really bunk advice from both Viewsonic and Apple. First off, Viewsonic are wrong. The driver has to come from them, not Apple. Furthermore, it has to be a plug-and-display driver, namely the driver that comes pre-loaded into ROM within the monitor. It sounds like Viewsonic don't have a correct one. This can be confirmed using SwitchRes X.
Second, Apple is way off base to say you can overheat your video card using SRX. What rubbish. The only potential damage to be done with a program like SRX would be to damage the scan circuit in a really old CRT computer monitor or television. There is zero risk with modern, digital displays.
If you install SRX, click on the "Export DDC" button and it will make a human readable text file out of the display driver (EDID) that is inside the Viewsonic. No doubt you will see that there is no mention of 1440 x 900 in the driver. Email it to Viewsonic's tech support and ask them why their EDID doesn't contain the native resolution for the monitor. Then get your money back. Either that or use SRX to configure the missing timing that should have been there in the first place.
