Need avice..for beginner with FCP

I captured all my footage, however when wanted to start editing it asked me to render first which I did. But after I wanted to play my footage in the canvas it told me that some clips were dropped. I reset my canvas on "Full Window" and I was able to see my image on the canvas however the picture was very small - half size of the canvas which makes it really hard to see.
When I zoom in the picture it either has a terrible quality or it does not work at all and I can only hear the audio.
Any ideas what I did wrong on settings? Did I maybe made a mistake in shooting the footage wrong?
Please help..since i'm a beginner (first time my own FCP studio at home) and I don't have much of an idea how to avoid dropped frames and setting my system.
Thanks!!

Welcome to the world of FCP.
First and foremost, you'll find it to be very helpful to use the search feature of this forum for basic question. There's a wealth of knowledge available by doing a simple search.
For example, a common problem people often encounter when first learning FCP is the need to render clips when they place them in a Sequence. That question gets asked several times a week - so the answer you seek is already here. But to save a bit of time, I'll tell you the most common reason; you're clip's setting do not match your FCP Sequence settings. Anytime that happens, you'll need to render. It would be best to either convert your clip to match the Sequence settings or to create a new Sequence with the setting that will match you clips.
But after I wanted to play my footage in the canvas it told me that some clips were dropped<<</div>
Are you certain it didn't say "dropped frames" instead of "dropped clips"?
When I zoom in the picture it either has a terrible quality or it does not work at all and I can only hear the audio<<</div>
You cannot upscale video without pixelization and degradation that way. Keep the Canvas an Viewer windows at "Fit to Window" or smaller for proper playback.
I don't have much of an idea how to avoid dropped frames and setting my system<<</div>
See this post from earlier today: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=893958&tstart=0 Just another example of how searching can help you.

    Hello,
I'd greatly appreciate any recommendation for an external hard drive for a PowerMac G5 for use with FCP Studio.

We see alot of Lacie issues here and elsewhere.
Drives fail... period. I believe you hear more about Lacie drives failing because they sell a ton more of them than many other suppliers. I've got 8 of em sitting right here on the desk and two more at the second station. I've lost one since I started using them years ago (and it had problems right out of the box) and I use them pretty heavy.
I understand that they use several different brands of drives in their enclosures, but from my experience they must have pretty good QC standards for what they package.
The guy said the G Techs were a little overkill for his needs. Lacie doesn't pay me. But if someone asks "how are Lacies?" I'll tell them they've been great for me and many others I know, especially if your requirements are capturing DV.
In five years, I ain't heard anybody say anything about it.
As for FCP. I love it! In 20 years of business, it's probably the purchase that's given me the most bang for my buck. But if you haven't heard people knock it, you've never met an Avid zelot, bruhhhhh, just the thought gives me shivers.
The drives X mentioned are designed for video work.
What Studio said, well he gives out some of the best advice on this board
(and maybe the most! ) and my reply to his post... that's why I used the little smiley face. No offence intended X.
I only meant to say that, in a world where software like FCP can do what it does at the price it does it, and drives like Lacie and G Tech can give you the storage they do for the price they do, the line between consumer and professional products is easily blurred.

    Saging,
Hmmm.  It seems a bit odd to be creating a 'forecasting-of-material-procurement' tool, when SAP has so many already built in, either within ERP or within APO.  Oh well, I am sure there must be a good reason.
I have seen from our systems that most loads come from APO going to BI. Is it always that way?
BI type data can come from any source.  The most common BI solutions I have seen is where BI data are extracted from the main ERP.  However, the beauty of BI is that it doesn't care, SAP builds in functionality to get data from anywhere.
Are data from ECC considered as well?
They can be if you design it so.
You should be aware that most data existing in ERP that are relevant for material planning also usually exist in APO.  The Core Interface between ERP and APO is normally set up to natively replicate substantial quantities of Master data and also transactional data.  It may be that in your business environment, you really don't need to connect to anything other than APO.  However, this is not a limitation of BI, it is just smart programming to try to minimize the number of sources of your data.

  • In need of immediate help with FCP new user taking over colleagues position

Good Morning. I am in urgent need of some help with a specific final cut pro question. My coworker and I have been working on a video project for our employer, a university. He ran the editor (FCP) and I ran the logistics of setting things up, keeping the contacts and scheduling, etc.
He has left until late August and there are two major typos in his work which is posted to the web at the moment. I need to correct these typos and have less than a faint idea of how to do it.
First of all, what is the file's last three letters? (.doc, .mov, etc...)
Second, can I edit this as easily as I think I can? Just click in the text file along the bottom timeline and edit that way?
How do I export the movie as an mp4 file after i have edited it.
Anything else that would be deemed helpful is always appreciated!
I really appreciate the help. I was never trained on this program because I never needed to be. Unfortunately, as it turns out, I did.
    Thanks for the help!

You need to locate the Project file. Which will be somewhere in your colleague's User space.
In the Finder, press command and F to activate the Find function.
Make sure the following parameters are set:
    Search *This Mac* and Contents
    Kind is Documents
    Type the project name.
    The icon looks like this:
Double click it to launch Final Cut Pro with the project.
To locate the text overlay, click on the Timeline to make it active. Use the down arrow on your keyboard to jump from one cut to the next. The text overlay will look similar to this:
Double click on the Text clip. This will place it in the Viewer (the left "monitor").
Click the "Controls" tab above the Viewer and make your changes. Press Return.
Clicking anywhere in the Timeline once more will update it.
Make sure that no clips are selected and the Timeline is the active window.
Go to the menu bar: File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion.
In the window that opens, make sure that Format is set to QuickTime Movie.
Click the Options button. Look at the top of the next window.
Does it say Compression Setting: H264? If it does, great.
If not, click the settings button and choose H264 from the *Compression Type* button.
At bottom left, drag the Quality slider to Best. Click OK.
This brings you back to the previous window.
Click on Size if you need to change something -there are a number of presets, but you can choose a custom size if you wish. Click OK.
That window is dismissed and returns you to the Save dialog.
Type a name and choose a destination for your file.

  • JVC GZ-HD7U MPEG Streamclip export settings for use with FCP

There are a number of compression options in the free MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2 and it's unclear what's best or how I would figure that info out. My guess is Apple HDV 1080i50, Apple HDV 1080i60, Apple DVCPRO HD 1080i50, or Apple DVCPRO HD 1080i60. The default setting was Apple Motion JPEG A, but this produced a huge file and doesn't seem right anyway. I think the desired frame size is 1920 x 1080, but I'm uncertain if I need to end up with an interlaced or progressive .mov file. My selectable options for progressive/interlaced are: "Interlaced Scaling," "Reinterlace Chroma," and "Deinterlace Video." Selecting "Deinterlace Video" excludes use of the other two options.
These clips will eventually be edited in FCP and I'm guessing that the appropriate settings will match whatever is selected at the export stage.
I'm using the JVC Everio GZ-DH7U HD Hard disk camcorder...I'm not sure if JVC uses the same setting across the board for it's HD cameras or maybe just the Everio cameras are similarly designed??
    Thanks to all!!

the output should match the source file, generally speaking. So if you camera is making HD files then using a HD sized coded would suffice.
HDV (IIRC) is 1440x1080. I often find that using the default settings for a particular file type in Streamclip often work quite well.
As a test, take a small file. if it works, great batch process away, if not, tweak it and then try the same small file until you get a desirable result. Rinse and repeat.

  • Buying used G4s for use with FCP

How well does FCP take advantage of dual-processor capabilities? I'm debating getting a G4 dual 533 vs. a G4 1.0 GHz machine. Which would work faster? Or are they both too painfully slow to even be worth it?
Thanks for helping the new guy!

My G4/400 is now 5 years old (I upgraded the processor last year to 1.5 Ghz). It works extremely well with FCP 5.0.4 with my particular setup - certainly very very usable and not at all painfully slow. But I'm not editing Hollywood blockbusters.
The only limitation is that I can't install Motion, but I knew that before I bought FCStudio.
Don't know anything about comparable performance of old dual-processor G4's.

  • Is this Mac ok for work with FCP Studio 5.1?

    Hi all,
in the next few weeks i'm hoping to make the change from PC to Mac based editing, using FCP Studio 5.1. This is what i'm thinking of buying:
imac 24" TFT (this will show HD won't it?), 2.33Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 DDR2 RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7600GT 256MB, 250GB Hard Drive, DVD Writer.
Will this run FCP Studio 5.1 smoothly?
    Many thanks, mat.
ps. what is the deal with FCP 6? Is it set for release soon? If so, i may put off the move until then.

  • Best Macbook Pro for use with FCP X for the money?

I am on a budget, but don't want to be frustrated with FCP X being slow or crashing. What Macbook pro configuration would you recommend? I'm currently considering 4 15" configurations that are below, but am open to any suggestions. I figure I can always get an external drive to upgrade the RAM, so I'm keeping that low to save. What processors, HD and video cards does everyone recommend? Thank you!

    Don't skimp on memory.
I personally use OWC for almost all of my Mac upgrades, especially memory and SSDs.
I'd highly recomend getting 16GB. You only have two slots, so it's not like you can add memory, you have to replace memory. I've seen many users post issues with FCP X who simply don't have enough memory.

  • I need example for VARIABLES with Customer Exit.

hi every body i need example for Variable for Customer Exit.

    Hi,
You can define 'Formula' variables in your customer exit..for example..
you need to calculate no of machine running hours per month, in order to
caculate the machine total utilization time..in this context.. you need to know
how may hours are there in an month by month..
you can define a variable and write the code in the customer exit for deriving the total no. of hours available for that month and get that value into a variable for further calution like deducting the down time and set up time so on..in your
    calculated KF..
    Hope this helps..
    Assign points if useful..
    Cheers,

  • 2 imacs v 1mbp  for use with FCP and motion.

I'm in need of advice. I'm in the market for a new computer(s).
Let me give you a rundown on my situation.
HOME COMPUTER- dual 800 1GIG ram G4. probably 6-7 years old -i got it 2nd hand in 03 i think-
(its about 6 years old and very noisy and update needed)
WORK COMPUTER- AL PB G4 1.5ghz 2gig ram 17". Bees knees when released almost 4 years ago.
(redering and Motion are getting beyond tiresome with how slow they are).
The WORK computer I do all my editing on while the HOME computer I use for internet surfing, itunes etc. I use FCP for editing wedding dvds, work related videos etc. but I'm thinking of taking a break from the wedding filming & editing business to concentrate on other things. I will still continue to edit and film but not as much in the past 6 years. As of last week I don't have any projects or side jobs in the pipeline but that may change within 6 months.
MY QUESTION- What should I get?
    1. 1 x 2.6 Ghz 4gig Ram 17" MBP at around 3,500 dollars (i'm in japan so about 360,000yen) and then use my AL powerbook as my home computer
    OR
    2. 2 x imac 20inch with 4gig ram which i think comes in at just under the MBP price
    OR
    3. 1 x imac 24" 4gig ram & 1x imac 20" with 4gig ram.
Is final cut pro and motion3 going to work better on the imacs than on my current AL powerbook? surely!
I still use motion1 and that really pushes my computer to it's limits. and the last 2 years have been a hectic one editing wise so I didn't want to upgrade computers during the course of projects ongoing.
(playing with fire in my books)
THING IS i need to be able to edit at both work and home. I take a my laptop with me to work everyday, but if I were to get 2 desktops I could just use external hard drives for my projects (which I do anyway). That's why if both computers are desktops they both need to be able to handle motion 3 and fcp6 to a competent level. and if I got two desktops I could try and sell my AL PB. It's still in superb condition due to me keeping it sleeved whenever not in use.
I heard rumours that apple will be releasing new imacs sooner rather than later as well.
ANY thoughts would be highly appreciated.

From what I've read on this forum, FCP doesn't work properly with two video cards.

  • Seeking new camera for use with FCP

Right now, I get dropped frames when I import video, whether via direct FireWire from my Panasonic 601, via my VCR or when I run video through an ADS converter. I run the video into a LaCie 500 GB Big Disk Extreme and I can't imagine that FireWire would not be enough to bring in video without dropped frames. I have read many posts here and all seem to lead to the hard drive, which mine should be more than adequate.
I had intended to upgrade my camera last year, that did not happen, so looking at doing it now. This camera will be used for personal use, not for gigs. But I do not want to get a camera that will A) not dump video into FCP without a fight and B) continue this dropped frame garbage (if it has anything to do with the camera at all).
I need to be able to hook the camera up to the FW port, got to log & capture, hit play and watch that sucker take the whole piece without a hiccup. It never made sense to me that FCP would not just keep capturing video even if there is a gap between segments. Maybe I am just missing a setting, but that never made sense to me. I can see it losing sync, but doing the whole stop-drop-&-roll makes no sense to me as a user. Granted, I am not an engineer.
Any hints on good affordable cameras are appreciated. I still have about 30 home videos of 90 minutes length to get on DVD, so I am leaning back towards miniDV again. If someone can make an argument otherwise I am all ears.
    Thanks!!
    jf

What device control setting are you using? there is firewire ntsc, and firewire ntsc basic. Try changing that to see if it makes any difference.
In your user preferences there are options to set how fcp reacts on dropped frames and timecode breaks during capture. Check that these settings are to your satisfaction.
Are you attempting to capture now? Or are you logging and capturing/batch capturing?
Personally I suspect that it is the Lacie BigDisk causing the problem, in that you're trying to capture video, perform device control, and send the video to the external drive, all via firewire. Try capturing to the internal drive. Also, a lot of cameras don't play nice with other stuff on the firewire bus. All the fw ports on a mac are on the same bus so it's sometimes necessary to actually unmount the drive before trying to capture. I'd try all these options in the interest of establishing what the problem is before you spend money trying to fix it.
You'd really be better off getting a big internal SATA drive to use as your media drive, much better value and faster.

  • What is the Best Hard Drive Camcorder for/compatible with FCP?

    Hi,
Just bought a JVC GZ-HD7...feel very trouble...unlike those MiniDV Cassette base Cam,Just plug in FireWire and FCP will read!!!To use the GZ-HD7 in FCP might use a lot of steps to convert before inport the source.
And now i'ld like to invest Hard Drive Camcorder for my FCP editing base,Is it a Good Media Format?
If yes,Which Prosumer or Semi-Pro Camcorder will you recommend?Really need your helps, maybe you are the one who are currently using it and feel happy with over all?!
Hope to get some suggestion from you guys!!
    Thanks!!

Thanks for tip David. I work at a middle school, we shoot a lot of district functions with three cameras then use the multiclip function of FCP. If I bought three of these cameras do you think they will work well in that environment? here is our workflow:
    1. Sync cameras with a clapper at the start of show.
    2. Import into FCP
    3. Mark inpoint at the sound of the clapper
    4. Create the multiclip sequence and edit
We have done 50 or so shows like this with 14 year olds as the editors and the results are very nice. I would like to move to the hard drive based camera. Being in education we are on a tight budget. Think three of these camerass would work in this environment?
Thanks so much for your expert advice.

  • Hard drives for use with FCP HD/G5

I've been looking to get a new 500 gig hard drive for storing media for FCP HD. There is a big price difference between "G-Force" and "La Cie" drives. Does anyone recommend one over the other?

"G-Force" is a cartoon with heroes that dress up as birds. G-Technology is the company that makes the best external hard drives out there. G-Raid being the drive of choice.
BUT, what you are looking for is a drive to dump the p2 footage onto in the field, THEN you import from that drive to your media drive on your G5, right?
Acomdata drives are what I use. Specifically the Ondago one.

  • Do you need cuda for playback with 4k on Macbook pro late 2013?

    My question is, I have a macbook pro (late 2013) i7 ,16G ram , nvidia Gforce 750m with 2GB ddr5, mavericks osx 10.9.1.
Does this machine playback 4k with software only? or does it needs to have cuda enabled?
Because i did several tests first with RED files 4k and even with resolution on 1/4 i still have drop frames. Then i tested with Arri Alexa RAW files 2k, and premiere simply can have a decent playback no matter the resolution 1/2 lags and droped frames, 1/4 its a no go because it has a lot of pixels can't really see whats happening.
One more test was the 4k Canon IOS 1-D files. These files again look like the arri ones, i dont have a playback no matter the resolution!! These files i cant even playback them on VLC they lag all over the place.
I runned the files on the internal SSD 700MB Read write, and then on a lacie us3, same problem. On premiere with software only and with cuda, same thing.
(i already posted on a diferent discussion, im having droped frames with cuda enable on simple H264 files, so maybe for 4k is possible, but only when cuda option fully works)
So its there a problem with my computer, or you guys think its adobe premiere CC ?
    Thanks

CUDA doesn't help at all with playback.  It only helps with effects, scaling, blending modes and such.
For that kind of media, you really should be looking at a proper workstation with five internal drives:
    System
    Projects
    Cache/Scratch
    Media
    Exports
And you might want to consider making that Media drive a RAID 3, which means a minimum of seven internal drives.

  • Upgrade to QT7 Pro for use with FCP 4.5 & DSP3 ???

I have read throught the material on QT7 & H.264 but am undecided. (ie; confused).
I have OS 10.3.9; Quicktime 6.5.2 Pro; FCP 4.5 HD (with the MPEG2 playback component); Compressor 1.2.1 and DVD Studio Pro 3.0.2.
Is there an advantage or point in upgrading to Quicktime 7 Pro with my current setup?
The only advantage I can see is H.264; but I don't think this is useable in DSP3 even when using the "standard" setting for DVD. (Sorry if that's wrong, as I said I've read the material but it's somewhat vague). I suppose I'm wonderfing if you can use H.264 in DSP3 to create smaller files and thus put more material on a standard format DVD.
    Any advice or thought welcome.

    Thanks David.
I kept researching and reading after putting up the post.
Upgrading to OS 10.4 & DSP4 & FCP5 to get Compressor 2 is just to expensive for me at this time.
And after much thought upgrading to QT7 for h.264 just to watch videos online, (and not having broadband thats a very time consuming process), I think I'll just stay with what I have at the moment which works well.
Many Thanks for the feedback and confirmation.
