Need help deciding between AI and EPS for use in XML

I am using a non-Adobe XML editing package/publishing engine. The vendor who set it up suggested that we use native AI files for editing and creating images, then export EPS files for use in the XML (it doesn't work with AI). The challenge is to keep the AI and EPS files in sync throughout the revision process.
My question is around whether we really need to keep the AI files or not. What are the actual elements we would be missing if we skipped the AI and just used the EPS files? Are EPS files less editable? I plan to test this, but I'm looking for issues to keep an eye on through testing.

I'm not sure whether PDF would be compatible, but I would not be surprised if it was not. If I create an image in Illustrator and save it as a PDF, will I be able to edit the PDF like an AI later? More importantly, is there anything from the AI format that would be missing in the PDF file?
Bottom line is, I don't want to have to store two files for each figure, but I don't want to compromise the editability or rendering quality.
Thanks for the quick answer!

  • Need help deciding between i5 and i7 X220

    I am trying to decide between i5 and i7.  The extra money doesn't bother me and I know the i7 isn't that much faster than the i5.
    There are problems with the mSata drives for those with i7/USB3 machines but I don't plan on using mSata yet.
    Some people have had problems with their USB 3.0 ports not providing full speed.   As an aside, you can get newer USB 3.0 drivers from http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=19880&keyword=usb+3.0&lang=eng .  There is also new NEC/Renesas firmware at http://www.station-drivers.com/page/nec.htm.  I have used these on my desktop with an add-on NEC/Renesas-based USB 3.0 adapter with success.
    So the question is, are i7 owners happy with their choice or should i7 be avoided for now?
    Also, any i7 owners have their USB 3.0 working fine with a USB 3.0 hard drive?
    Are there any other issues such as heat or fan noise that are worse on the i7?

    Also, will the batty life be affected by the i7/i5 choice?

  • I need help understanding export options and optimizing for web

    I have been using FCP X for a short while now and have a pretty good grasp on the editing capabilities. What I'm having a horrible time figuring out is the export/share options. The videos I create are typically approximately 1 minute in length and get posted to a web site (we have our own CMS and video player so I'm not using YouTube or Vimeo or anything like that). In order to post them I need them to be MP4s and then I have to create .webm and .ogv files. The source material I work with is generally great, high quality stuff, so I end up with very large output files from the initial FCP share master file options.
    When I use MPEG Streamclip to make my MP4s I end up with files that are still quite large and I can't seem to ever get the file size manageable without losing tons of quality. I do not have Compressor, though if that will solve my problem I will put in for the expense of it. What I'm trying to understand is what sorts of settings I should be trying out to get my file sizes to be manageable without completely compromising my quality. And I know this can be done, because the company I work for pays for a great quantity of video work each year (from an outside production firm) and the clips provided are beautiful in quality and small in file size -- for example, I recently worked on a video and got it into the 40MB range before quality went to crap, working off the same material the production company we do work with had theirs down into the teens and looking beautiful!
    To throw an even greater wrench in the works, I am working off a mac. But when my boss, on a pc, saves the mp4s I create (raw files -- not what is posted to the web) locally on his machine and views them from there the sound is always off a tad and the people in the videos look like they're lip synching.
    Any advice on either of these is MUCH appreciated. I've been trying to figure this out properly for months, and only today decided to stop seeing if someone else had the same question and just post my own.

    Thank you Karsten, this was helpful I have utilized the Quality slider and the frame size options before though with limited results. I've never messed with the Limit Date Rate option as I don't know what I'm doing with it, I see you put 5Mbps. Is that a typical setting that I could use?
    Using stream info, here's info on my original source file:
    Stream: Charles_0023_2.mov
    Duration: 0:00:51
    Data Size: 96.51 MB
    Bit Rate: 15.77 Mbps
    Video Tracks:
    H.264, 1920 × 1080, 29.97 fps, 15.64 Mbps
    Audio Tracks:
    MPEG-4 Audio stereo, 48 kHz, 127 kbps
    Stream Files:
    Charles_0023_2.mov (96.51 MB)
    As a comparison, here's the info on a similar clip that the company we sometimes use created:
    Stream: Charles_0019_4.mp4
    Duration: 0:00:49
    Data Size: 4.66 MB
    Bit Rate: 0.80 Mbps
    Video Tracks:
    JVT/AVC Coding, 710 × 400, 29.97 fps, 635 kbps
    Audio Tracks:
    MPEG-4 Audio stereo, 48 kHz, 162 kbps
    Stream Files:
    Charles_0019_4.mp4 (4.66 MB)
    I'm fine with bringing the frame size down some and modifying the limit data rate, but sometimes I feel like I'm forcing my video into something it's not and the quality suffers -- this is where my understanding of video work breaks down LOL. Any suggestions of how I can get my .mov into something like the the .mp4 above?
    Also have you had any experience with mp4s not playing back properly on pcs?
    Again, thank you!

  • Need help deciding between 2 slr cameras

    I would love some help in deciding between 2 cameras, canon digital rebel xt and nikon d50. Since both seem to be rated equally, I want to base my decision on which one is easier to work with in iphoto or at least adobe elements 2 or 3. I have heard that raw files are proprietary and I don't even know if either will work on my mac. (do not have usb2 only usb1).
    Especially since I do not have any experience with any digital camera, I would appreciate any suggestions.
    thank you

    Thank you all for responding. I have been away from my computer and again I am not receiving e-mails letting me know if someone has replied.
    To answer a few questions; I will mainly be doing iDVD and iMovie slideshows and a few good prints (hopefully). I will be mainly taking photos of family and especially a new baby. After some research I was told that slrs take faster pixs, therefore more suitable for a moving baby, especially if shooting in a continuous mode. I also do not want a long delay before I take another pix so I can capture that special baby expression. I also want sharp pictures with realistic colors and enough pixels to crop. Since I do edit, crop ... I thought RAW might be a better choice than jpgs, since I understand that jpgs lose a lot of quality when touched up.
    Since I did not know anyone answered me, I bought the Canon. I am somewhat disappointed. I do not know if it is my fault or the cameras. I went to about 7 stores and asked the salespeople their opinion and all varied. Quite a few told me I would get sharper photos with the Nikon and maybe they were right. My Canon shoots pretty good color (although a little on the orange side, especially skin colors), BUT THEY ARE ALL SOFT, as one saleman warned me about. I am very disappointed since a friend's Nikon coolpix 5200 has sharper images than my canon at a third of the price.
    I now have this dilemna in that I have till Sunday to exchange it for a Nikon, but I am afraid that I might be exchanging one problem for another, or that the softness is caused by me regardless which camera I use. In that case I prefer the canon because it is lighter.
    I also discovered that Minolta makes a camera with anti-shake that is in the same price range. Maybe that would solve my problem, however it is the heaviest of all 3, but I would be willing to buy it if the anti-shake gives a sharper photo. I want these photos to eventually look good on a HD television.

  • Hi, I need help deciding between 2 notebooks

    I have an Asus g1s which I bought from bestbuy 2 years back. I'm going to get it replaced soon and was trying to decide between a couple models. I really want a future proof laptop for gaming.
    here they are:
    Alienware M17x
    ntel® Core™2 Quad processor Q9000 2.0Ghz;
    4GB DDR3 SDRAM;
    DL DVD±RW/CD-RW drive;
    17" widescreen WXGA+ 1440x900;
    500GB hd 7200 rpm;
    Dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M graphics;
    PRICE:2,299.99
    Asus G72Gx
    Intel® Core™2 Quad processor Q9000 2.0Ghz;
    6GB DDR2 memory;
    DL DVD±RW/CD-RW drive;
    17.3" widescreen LED-backlit LCD 1600x900;
    640GB hard drive (320GB x 2; 7200 rpm);
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M graphics;
    PRICE:1,299.99
    So as you can see the Alienware is a thousand bucks more and the only thing better about it is the gpu. The screen, the hd are a bit worse but I dont care about the tiny difference. I can't really tell which ones ram is better so what do you guys think?
    Is it really worth paying 1000$ more for dual gpus?
    (please feel free to ask me any questions)

    Personally, I would never get a laptop for gaming, unless it's an absolute must for some reason. You get a lot more for your money with a desktop system, heat is much less of an issue as well. Everyone I know with a gaming  laptop can't use it on a flat surface and either have to have a cooling mat or prop the laptop up to keep it from overheating.
    However, if you are going to get a gaming laptop I would go for one of the Core i7 (Nehalem) based models instead of Core 2 duo.
    Computers are NOT appliances, they MUST be maintained! Educate yourself on how to do this and save yourself headaches, repair bills, and lost data!

  • Help deciding between BPM and Business Workflow

    Hi All,
    We are in the phase of deciding which tool to use for SAP Application systems from Workflow and Business Rules Engine Point of view.
    We recommended SAP Business Workflow + BRF+ for that.
    But SAP Business Workflow is not having monitoring UI as good as SAP BPM.
    So we are planning to propose the solution using SAP BPM instead of SAP Workflow.
    Our main requirement is HR Org structure data fetching and it is achievable with SAP BPM what I have studied so far.
    My question to the experts is whether SAP BPM can be integrated with SAP BRF+?
    Thanks in advance

    The biggest difference (besides the underlying technology stack) is that by modeling processes in BPMN, business users gain transparency and become more involved in BPM projects, leading to better results.
    btw, SAP BPM is in the market for 5 years now and has more than one thousand productive customers.

  • Need help deciding between two different Zen products [micro vs ... micr

    Hey all,
    Just bought a black zen micro last Wednesday and am loving it. Bought it from Best Buy and splurged on the extra protection plan. Unfortunatlly, after a trip to Fry's today, I'm questioning my impulse buy.
    At Fry's they have two different box sets of Zen Micros. One small one, like the one I got at Best Buy, with the player/battery, headphones, usb cable and smooth little pouch. But they also had a larger box with player/battery, headphones, usb cable, smooth little pouch AND an AC charger (and I'm not sure, but possibly a second battery?). I am assuming that this large box with more items (but still the same $99 price) is an older box. What I'm wondering is if there is any difference between the players in the two boxes. If there is not a difference, then I'm going back to Best Buy to get a refund and get one of the boxes at Fry's that has the charger with it (a much needed accessory for my uses). Of course, if the players do differ, I would have to find out in what way and weigh my option to keep what I have or return it and base a decision on that. That, of course, is what prompted this post.
    I know some players just can't help but be deffecti've, does this older box contain a series with a higher rate of returns? Does it look different (I really like the way the back lighting looks on mine)? Anyone have experience with one of the older boxed sets and one of the newer ones (bought one, then another for S.O.)?
    I'm already leaning towards return, but I just wanted to check with other creative users before I made my final decision.
    Thanks,
    -Jonathan

    There is no difference in the operation of the players. The very early Micros had the word "BACK" on the return button, the newer version just has a left pointing arrow. Supposedly, the newest units have a revision to the headphone jack, but there is no way of telling if you have the better or worse jack. The large box will also have the holder with the belt clip and stand. The Limited Edition has the extra battery, and is clearly marked with a sticker on the front of the box that says "Limited Edition FREE Extra Battery for 24 Hour Playtime. Some people say that the backlighting is different with the newer units, I dont know. The large box IS the older retail version. Hope this helps you.

  • Need help deciding between iMac or Display

    I'm hoping some of you mac pros can help me with some advice. A few months ago I made the switch and bought a macbook and realised how great it was for photography, but am now wishing I had a larger screen. I can't decide if I should keep the macbook and get a display to hook it up to, or sell the macbook and buy a new imac. If anyone with either of these could help me out with some pros and cons I would be most grateful !!!

    Hi LilacRose
    If you bought the Macbook for portability then buy a screen, if possible go to a dealer and take you Macbook to try some out.
    You probably will need at least a 20" so consider if you have permanent space for presumably an iMac (the keyboard will store under the screen on the stand) or the screen.
    It comes down to what other things you want to do with the machine, for instance if you want take it to show friends or family photos you have, then maybe keep the Macbook and have the benefit of the big screen for editing etc.
    Remember that although Macs hold their value you will still lose some money possibly.

  • Need help deciding what computer is best for me?

    I am 14 years old and going into high school. I am debating whether to buy the new macbook or take my grandpa's original macbook air. I want to take programing/coding and graphic design classes, so I wanted to know which computer would be best for me?  I like the macbook air for how like and easy it is to carry with me to and from school, but I'm not sure if it would be more beneficial to have the newer technology of the macbook?  Any help or input would be great!  Thanks

    Can the money you don't spend now on a new computer be put aside to buy you a new computer at a later date? That is the key question. The trick with the Air is to avoid using up the harddrive, so the less stuff you have to put on it (games, movies), the better. Other than that, it should be able to do all you want it to do...for now. And given how much you poor students have to haul around in your backpacks , I think it's smart to go for Grandpa's Air and save yourself from hauling around nearly three extra pounds.
    The Air is there and, I assume, it's going to be given to you at a good price ? Use it and see if it does all you need and want it to do. If you find it's too limiting, the Macbook Pros will still be there for you to get. What's more, if you hold off now, then as you near college--or where ever you're going after high school, you can use the money you didn't spend now for something that might be really excellent for your future in coding and graphics.
    If it's feasible, I'd try out the Air for the summer and see if it's for you. The school specials on computers will be going for a while if you find it's not enough and you need more.

  • Need help deciding between MacBook Pros...

    I have recently decided to switch to the MacSide and I narrowed my quest down to one of the 15" MacBook Pros.
    I will be editing for stop motion videos mostly. I will be using Final Cut Express. I imagine I will want to have FCE, garageband, iChat, and Safari all open at once. (I tend to multitask) I am unsure if the slight change in processor will make the $500 difference... or a big enough difference for the money. The 2.66GHz model also has a slightly better graphics card and 4GB of ram by default.
    Has anyone been in a similar situation in which they can share their thoughts?
    Thanks!
    ( I realized I put this in the incorrect category, so I am reposting.)

    i say if you can afford it do it! "go big or go home"
    i've had my powerbook g4 for about 5 years now, and it's running fine, a little slow! Sure, i know an upgrade is needed soon (im also running tiger). the macbook is a lot faster then my powerbook, n im runnin adobe suite and / or logic! but the main thing my old computer still rocks a little slower but runs fine!
    u could also invest in apple care ($350 us)!
    as for the graphic card, mine is older n crapier but it's fine, and i'm mostly doing visual stuff.
    so ya if you got the extra 500 do it, if not or u don't think its at necessory upgrade get apple care.

  • Need help with IPhone 4S and upgrade for IOS 7

    I upgraded my phone last night to IOS 7.0.2 and this morning I went through all the initial set up questions and my phone was working.   Once I walked away and it turned off, it is asking me for a passcode to get back into my phone.   I did NOT have a passcode before I upgraded do not know what passcode it would be asking me to enter.   I have tried a couple different passcodes and nothing is working now my phones says it is "DISABLED".   Can anyone help?

    The upgrade to iOS 7.0 automatically turns on Passcode Lock....whether you want it or not. You probably don't remember the passcode you entered when prompted, but regardless, one was setup on the phone. To fix, & remove the passcode, follow the directions here to force the phone into recovery mode & restore it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
    This will remove the passcode.

  • Need help asap about point and shoot for inside

    trying to take pictures for auction listings, don'thave a lot of experience.  have been told about canon powershot and panasonic lumix - could you tell me what will be the easiest for me to use and give me the best inside pictures of objects to list - thanks!!!!

    The key to getting a good picture is to make sure that you can control the light and less about the exact camera as long as you do not purchase any junk.
    For auction images, you should invest in a small light box setup with multiple strobes/flashes that illuminte the item properly.  In order to do this, then you should get an inexpensive SLR.  You should also get a small tripod and remote shutter release that will allow you to make correctly focus pictures.
    Currently, Nikon and Canon are head to head when it comes to image quality with Nikon edging out Canon since they have recently introduced some really great lenses.  Sony is doing OK, but remember Canon and Nikon own 90 % of the camera market and the other 10% is left to everyone else.  Sony is having some problems with ISO images that contain a lot more noise than Canon or Nikon.

    I have purchased the Royal Yachting Association VHF SRC App for my iMac and downloaded it.
    The programme asks me to test that my microphone is working and the playback is working.
    I have been to System Preferences and can record my voice to get text onto Word by pressing fn fn - so I know the mike is OK
    I have no idea whether the App does record my voice because when I press Playback nothing happens.
    My iTunes is working perfectly so I can listen to music and watch videos.
    Please help tell me what to do?

    Can we have more information on this.
    This problem might be because of:
    1. Wrong settings for kernel parameters
    2. Wrong environment variables
    3. Wrong access privileges to oracle database files and folders
    4. Improper shutting down or startup of database
    Please provide more information so that we can have some clues. As well, let us know which platform are you running the database on.
