Need help in deciding how to use new hard drives & SSD

I've read through the suggested drive arrangements for 4 drives, but mine is a bunch of different drives and I would like some help.  I have some drives coming and would like to set them up to be most efficient for PPro CS5 and Encore CS5.  Here is what I have (or will have in the next few days):
Drive 1:  New SSD for OS (win7 - 64) and programs - it is a Crucial C300-256GB and will be here in a few days.
Drive 2: A new WD Black 1TB - It will be here tomorrow.
Drive 3: Samsung 1TB drive
Drive 4: Hitachi 750 GB drive
I have run some benchmarks on drive 3 & 4 and they are about the same - not terribly fast.  I assume that Drive 2 will be the fastest of the hard drives, and of course the SSD will be the fastest of them all.  Any suggestions?

RobertBoy,
You have a really strong system!
Assuming you are running CS5, your system would benefit most from some level of RAID and to be fully balanced. I would suggest one of the following to match up with the rest of your setup:
1) hardware RAID w/ redundancy (i.e. RAID 5, etc.) with 5 1TB drives (between $1000 - $1500)
2) 3 or 4 drive RAID 0, by adding matching drives to any of the 3 drives that you have already (only pick one, retire the other two) (between $125 - $250)
Either of these options would require buying new drives (matched drives are strongly recommended for RAID arrays), and should be configured as per Harm's Generic Guideline for Disk Setup for Number of Disks = 5 (yes, even if you only go with a 3x RAID 0).
3) If you are really trying to save $$$, just follow Harm's guideline for Number of Disks = 4 and use your current drives, however I'm sensing with your choice of boot drive (pretty sweet C300!) you probably would not mind adding some additional matched drives and then using the leftover 2 unmatched drives for backups or other use.
The following thread includes some before / after mention of how CS5 performance was impacted by changes to drives in terms of PPBM5 benchmark testing:
How changes to CPU speed, RAM size, and drives (SSD and hard drives) impacted my PPBM5 score
If you have the time, you could test option 3 above using PPBM5 and see where your system falls. If you do, I would be interested in your finding - please post the results back to this thread as well.

Jim

  • Need Help Installing an OS on a new Hard Drive

    H, I just installed a new Hard Drive on my G4. My problem is I cannot find the original G4 install discs.
    I do have OSX Panther discs which I bought later. Can I use these to install a new OS?
    How would I do this as the new Hard Drive is brand new and probably not formatted? Do I power up the mac and load the Panther install disc 1 or is this not the correct procedure?
    Also I have an external LaCie CD drive because the one in the mac doesn't work. Will the external LaCie CD drive be recognized when I put the OSX Panther discs in it to install an OS on my new Hard Drive?
    Sorry for so many questions but I don't want to mess this up.
    Thanks

    Thanks for replying Thomas. Well my G4 Hard Drive was shot so I took it out and installed a new one so I have to reinstall everything (new OS & all applications). I tried to use Super Duper to Clone the HD but the HD was too far gone, so now I need to install an OS on the new Hard Drive.
    I can't find my original G4 install cd's. I do have Panther OS discs and an iLife disc I bought awhile back. Can I use these instead of the original G4 install disc?
    Here's the process to install a new OS as I understand it. Please correct me if I am wrong or am missing a step.
    1) Put the first Panther install disc in the cd tray.
    2) Power up the G4 while holding down the "C" key
    3) Follow the installation instructions
    Thanks!

  • Need help for installing OS after installing new hard drive

    I have an imac 27 2010.
    The hard drive has failed for the 2nd time. I have installed a new hard drive again. When trying to install the OS, it looks to begin but then tells me it can not be completed.
    I had gone the the erase, then partition steps previously.
    Any advice?
    I do have a time machine copy to restore from if I can get that far as well as the discs handy to use.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Which OS version install disk do you have? It's not Mavericks since that does not come with a disk.
    And you are trying to install Mavericks? If so, are you using the Internet Recovery Option (press Command + Option + R while restarting/rebooting)? I recently read of a case where the user was unable to reinstall the old OS (in that case Snow leopard) and he could not install Mavericks either. He took it to an Apple store and they bypassed the ID/password requirements and reinstalled it for him.

  • How to use external hard drive and iTunes together?

    how to use external hard drive and iTunes together?

    Yes I did get to that part.... I went trough external to retrive itunes folder... When I selected the folder, it said that it was locked, choose another folder... I then went to my external again to my itunes folder and and used command I to see if folder was locked and it wasn't.... it was suggested on another forum to reboot.. which I did and still same problem... All I want to do is link my external hard drive that has my itunes playlist from another Mac to my new one.. and to also use the external as the main source for adding new songs to my playlist...

  • Lost a 2 hard drives, have 7 k photos on a touch that I need to load on IMAC with a new hard drive, how do I do it.  Just never went from a Touch to iMac.  I have the cable hooked up and then what, I don't want to mess up,my last chance to save 7k pics!

    Lost my hard drive and also an Ipad, but have 7 k photos on a Touch that I need to load on fixed IMAC with a new hard drive, how do I do it. (There were more photos than the 7k, but they were saved on other drives, thank goodness).  7K pohotos on the Touch are no where else, must be saved!  Just never went from a Touch to iMac.  I have the cable hooked up and then what, I don't want to mess up,my last chance to save 7k pics!  New Aperture and IPhoto on IMAC with no other photos loaded on the new hard drive yet.

    I'd ask in the iTouch forum where there are more iTouch users there than here and they should know how to off load the photos.  It might take a 3rd party app.

  • Best ways to use new hard drives?

    I got some really useful answers on this forum when I was trying to recover from a hard disk crash. Thanks to all who helped. Now, I have a few more questions.
    On the recommendation of the service technician at the Apple
    store, I went on line and bought a Seagate 250 GB
    internal drive, and installed it in my G4, only to
    discover that it can only recognize 128 GB. Oh, well, it was pretty cheap.
    Once I got the system rebuilt and running OK, I went
    to work on the CD burner. It turned out to be broken,
    and the manufacturer, La Cie, recommended I just
    purchase an internal CD/DVD burner, and install it in
    the old case. After thinking about that for awhile, I
    thought, why don't I just buy another internal hard
    drive, and install that in the CD case? that way ,
    I'd have an external firewire drive to use for backup, instead of burning CDs. which is a pain. So, I found a 160 GB Seagate drive, even
    cheaper than the 250, and bought that. I should have
    checked to see whether the old hard drive would fit in
    the CD case, but, of course, I didn't. Turns out the
    3.5 inch internal hard drive is much smaller than the
    CD drive, I think the electronics would work OK, but
    I don't have a good way to secure the disk drive in
    the larger case. So, now I have 2 internal hard
    drives in my Mac, one a 250 GB which my Mac thinks is
    128 GB, and the other a 160 GB, which the Mac also
    thinks is 128 GB!
    My questions:
    1. Would the electronics in the CD/DVD case work with the ATA drive?
    2. Anyone know of a good work-around to secure the drive in the larger case?
    3. If I keep both drives in the Mac. Can I make the slave drive bootable? How?
    4. If I should get a good answer to #1 and #2, or choose to buy a new hard drive enclosure, how do I go about cloning the contents of the master drive to the slave, so that I can use the larger drive as my external drive without having to repeat the painful process of building my system from scratch?
    5. I think I remember seeing reference to a software solution to the 128 GB limit. Is that correct? What are the drawbacks? do I have to reformat the drives?
    Thanks.

    Hi, Dave!
    I don't know for sure whether the drive will work in the FW case that held the optival drive. Why don't you temporarily connect it and check?
    If you install the drive internally and put an operating system on it, it will boot regardless of whether it's configured as Master or as Slave. You could have an operating system on both drives if you cared to. You'd be able to boot from either of them (which is determined by - and may be changed in - the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences from a booted system, the menubar of the install disk, or the Startup Manager (invoked when the option key is held down at startup).
    You can use the Restore option in Disk Utility to clone your startup volume to a volume on another drive. Better yet, try SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner, which are faster. Cloning will make a bootable duplicate of the startup volume you can use just like the original, without having to reinstall anything.
    The software solution you're referring to is Intech's ATA Hi-Cap Support Driver. Read the info at the site; there are some restrictions on how you need to set up the drives for it to work properly. If you instead buy an ATA-133 PCI controller card ($60-$80), you won't have the restrictions and will have a faster drive bus to operate with, taking advantage of the speed of the ATA-100 or ATA-133 drives you have, while allowing you to use the native logic board bus to add an additional (<120GB) drive.
    In any event, in order to realize the full capacity of the drives, you'll need to reformat them from the 128GB they're currently formatted to.

  • Need help getting ALL iTunes from old comp hard drive

    Old computer XP Home died after house was hit by lightning. Surge protector gave it's life but not enough to save the day. However both hard drives from old computer are fine and function via connection of USB external hard drive enclosure.
    New computer is Vista Home Premium on AMD64duo w/4G RAM and 500GB hard drive.
    Connected old hard drives to USB and can see everything. Did Import Folder and copied most files from old iTunes Music directory. (I say most files because iTunes continues to crash after approx 10 minutes of this copy process. On 17th try now.)
    Can see and play the music that got copied but artwork is gone. Playlists are gone. Ratings gone. Basically all the preferences of how I had the old iTunes setup.
    Needing help in understanding how to get Artwork and anything else I can from the old iTunes.
    Have not tried to plug in iPod yet. Will wait atm.
    First old drive had Program files and Second old drive had all Data files.
    AMD64 AthlonX2   Other OS   Vista Home Pre AMD64 duo 4G
    AMD64 AthlonX2   Other OS   Vista Home Pre AMD64 duo 4G

    First, I followed the instructions on this site for Backing up itunes library by copying to a external hard drive.........
    That's what it does. It makes a backup copy of the iTunes folder. iTunes will not use that folder or do anything to that folder.
    All that succeeding in doing was mirroring whatever I did on the C:/ drive on the E:/ drive i.e. if I deleted itunes from the C:/ drive it disappeared from the E:/ drive.
    Do you mean after you followed the instructions and copied \Music\iTunes folder to the external drive and then deleted something from iTunes, it deleted it from the external drive also?
    As above, iTunes will not use or do anything to that folder.
    Next, I followed these instructions for Moving the itunes media folder to the external drive.
    Why? You already copied the entire iTunes folder (including th emedia folder) to the external drive.
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
    Select *Choose library* and select the _iTunes library.itl_ file in the iTunes folder on the external.
    This too didn't help as the media folder is not the problem, its the library as its 735kb!
    What do you mean "the library"?
    735kB is small for the iTunes library.itl file and a single file in iTunes is larger than that.
    Am I right in thinking there's no way of moving the library to the external drive whilst wiping it from the C;/ drive?
    Yes. Follow my intruction above (Choose library) and iTunes will use the iTunes folder on the external.
    You can then delete \Music\iTunes on the C: drive.

  • How to install new hard drive on Macbook Pro

    My hard drive failed and I am no longer able to boot up the Macbook. If I go and buy a new hard drive and replace it with the broken one, what will happen when I turn it on. It will be a brand new drive with nothing on it. Will it automatically start installing OS X on it or do I need anything else?
    Thanks!

    It'll display a blinking question mark and/or automatically start from Apple's servers. What needs to be done depends on the computer's model.
    If it originally shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier, insert a compatible install DVD and press the C key.
    If it originally shipped with 10.7 or newer or was upgraded to use Apple's Internet Recovery system, press the Option, Command, and R keys if needed.
    Install the OS.

  • Need to reinstall PSE 11 on a new hard drive original hard drive failed.  Obviously can't deactivate

    My hard drive crashed and I'm going to have to install a new hard drive and re-install PSE 11.  The instructions to put another copy on a new computer is to deactivate PSE from the old computer .  Am I going to do that since it calls for me to deactivate from the internet from the original computer.  I'm assuming no.  What do I do?

    If you Hd has crashed then clearly you can't deactivate the product.  Therefore, just go ahead and install the product on a new machine and then try to activate it online.  If this is your second activation then it will activate automatically otherwise you need to contact the Adobe Customer Service at this link:
    <Contact Customer Care>
    They will help you out and your product will be activated.
    Good luck.

                 copyInto.setTel(tel);
                 copyInto.setEmail(email);
    }How can I correct the wrong part?
    I don't understand how to use super in equals() method and makeCopy() method.

    Try something like this ...
    public boolean equals(Object other) {
      if (other==null || !(other instanceof Person)) return false;
      Person that = (Person) other;
      return getTitle().equals(that.getTitle())
          && getName().equals(that.getName())
          && getAddress().equals(that.getAddress())
          && getTel().equals(that.getTel())
          && getEmail().equals(that.getEmail())
    Notes:
    * This overrides Object's public boolean equals(Object other), which is (probably) what you meant.
    * You don't need to call "super.getWhatever" explicitly... just call "getWhatever" and let java workout where it's defined... this is better because if you then override getTitle() for example you don't need to change your equals method (which you would otherwise probably forget to do, which would probably have some interesting side effects.
    Cheers. Keith.

  • How to format new hard drive for Apple TV when you can't use old HD

    I need to know how to format a new HD to install in my Apple TV where I can't use the old HD to clone or otherwise create the new structure on the new HD.
    I have an Apple TV that was syncing to a Mac Mini that had a defective HD and logic board. I was unable to backup the Apple TV to the Mac Mini for some time before I had the mini repaired by AppleCare.
    When the mini came back, it registered on the Apple TV as a new computer and I couldn't sync with it without losing hundreds of dollars of content.
    All was okay until the other night when Apple's defective update for the ATV erased ALL my content. I updated it to 3.1 this morning, which Apple indicated might fix the problem. It didn't. The old content is all gone.
    My ATV is out of warranty, so I removed the old HD and copied the files from the "Purchased" folder to my mini. That saved most 101 items that I purchased since 12/08 (but not all for some reason). I lost all content prior to 12/08 that I purchased, as well as some content since 12/08 that I purchased.
    I need to keep the old HD untouched until I can purchase data recovery software. I'd like to just put a spare IDE HD in that I have into the ATV and just start over with what is in my Mac mini iTunes.
    So, how does one do that? I'm not gifted with vast Unix knowledge or experience and I don't want to clone the old HD and risk losing more data if it writes to the HD for some reason.
    Thanks.

    Hi Atagahi,
    Firstly, have you emailed Apple iTunes support indicating your issue? There have been instances in which Apple will allow re-downloading of all content you've purchased on the iTunes store.
    Secondly, I highly recommend you get an external usb hard drive, attach it to your mini and use it as a Time Machine drive to keep your iTunes purchases safe. It's a fact of life that all hard disk drives will eventually fail. The Apple TV should never be used as any kind of permanent storage space; think of it as a 'temporary holding' zone. And as you've unfortunately already experienced, a glitch wiped out all content on the Apple TV.
    As regards your original question, it seems like there have been folks who've done just that...taken the internal drive in the Apple TV out and attached it to a mac and copied files from the Apple TV hard drive. I have not had to do such, so I cannot offer any help here except for Linda's suggestion on googling the net for solutions.
    Good luck and hope you get all your purchased content back Atagahi!

    I own a 2010 mac pro 13' and using OS X 10.9.2(current version). The issue that I am in need of help is with my external hard drive.
    I am a photographer so It's safe and convinent to store pictures in my external hard drive.
    I have 1TB external hard drive and I've been using for about a year and never dropped it or didn't do any thing to harm the hardware.
    Today as always I connected the ext-hard drive to my mac and click on the icon.
    All of my pictures and files are gone accept one folder that has program.
    So I pulled up the external hard drive's info it says the date is still there, but somehow i can not view them in the finder.
    I really need help how to fix this issue!

    you have a notebook, there is a different forum.
    redundancy for files AND backups, and even cloud services
    so a reboot with shift key and verify? Recovery mode
    but two or more drives.
    a backup, a new data drive, a drive for recovery using Data Rescue III
    A drive can fail and usually not if, only when

  • How to use external hard drive on my old mac?

    I am preparing my old mac (G5) for recycling and want to back up and erase my files on an external hard drive. I have used the external hard drive once on my macbook pro and when I connected it on the old mac, it's telling me it cannot read all the files. It also isn't showing on the desktop so I'm unable to back up the files. What do I do? How do I get the external hard drive working?

    What is the make & model number of the external HD?
    Try plugging in the external into a different port on your computer.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
    Start up disk utility & see what this application says about the external hd.
    You should have a backup of your data … even on a new machine.
    You need an external Firewire drive to boot a PowerPC Mac computer.
    I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
    I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.
    Has everything interface:
    FireWire 800/400 + USB2, + eSATA 'Quad Interface'
    save a little money interface:
    FireWire 400 + USB 2.0
    This web page lists both external harddrive types. You may need to scroll to the right to see both.

  • Need help with iphoto and dragging to external hard drive

    Hello,
    I have my iphoto very organized into Events and I recently just moved them to be in folders.  I would like to have only certain Events (or folders/albums) on the external hard drive.  The apple store rep said to go to Finder, Pictures, Iphoto, then right click to "Show Package Contents."  Then go to either "original" or "modified." From there I can drag into the hard drive.  However, I'm very confused because the "modified" or "original" are not organized at all by folders or events.  There are dates only.  What can I do to find, drag the events (each are named)?  Please help!
    Katie

    1. Ignore the Apple store rep.
    2. You need to clarify:
    I have my iphoto very organized into Events and I recently just moved them to be in folders
    Moved them to be where in folder? In iPhoto? In the FInder?
    I would like to have only certain Events (or folders/albums) on the external hard drive.
    In an iPhoto Library? Or in the Finder?
    Do not access the Library via the Finder or any other app. You risk damaging your Library and you will lose data.
    If you want to have some Events/Albums on an External Disk within iPhoto:
    Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
    Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
    As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
    You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
    If you want to have them in Folders in the Finder
    Use the FIle > Export command to get photos out of iPhoto.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
    has details of the options in the Export dialogue.

  • Need help - Moving my Itunes to an external hard drive

    Help! Help! Help! Am tearing my hair out here!
    I recently got my first Ipod so please excuse if I'm being thick here! Basically, I'm about two thirds of the way downloading my not insignificant CD collection onto my Ipod, which I'm doing via Itunes. The C drive on my laptop is now full to bursting and I don't even have enough space left for my anti virus (big problem!). Therefore, I am wanting to transfer my itunes to an external hard drive. First, I followed the instructions on this site for Backing up itunes library by copying to a external hard drive.........
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751?viewlocale=en_US
    All that succeeding in doing was mirroring whatever I did on the C:/ drive on the E:/ drive i.e. if I deleted itunes from the C:/ drive it disappeared from the E:/ drive.
    Next, I followed these instructions for Moving the itunes media folder to the external drive.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
    This too didn't help as the media folder is not the problem, its the library as its 735kb! Am I right in thinking there's no way of moving the library to the external drive whilst wiping it from the C;/ drive? I need to get these darn files off my laptop and to use my external drive for my itunes. Alternatively, if I were to wipe the files to free up the space (as they are backed up on the hard drive) is there a way of syncing so that it simply adds new stuff to the existing music on my ipod not replacing it..
    Hope I'm making sense and that someone can help.
