Need help undersatnding resolution.

I exported one picture using different JPG compressions. I ended up with files ranging from 1.3MB to 127KB. I printed each as 4x5 & 8x10 to see what compression was acceptable.
I then opened each in Photoshop and was surprised to see that they all had the same number of pixels and pixels-per-inch (2048x1536 @ 240ppi).
I don't get it. I thought the low-res JPG would have fewer pixels. When zooming-in however, I see that there are just as many pixels but the color of each is different. The low-res picture has adjacent pixels sharing similar values (resulting in pixelation) but each pixel has slightly different color values.
Can someone explain this to me? is it better to resize in Photoship with the Image Size command and reduce the pixels-per-inch?

Ed,
I believe that you are confusing resolution and compression. All of your JPEG's are the same resolution, which is why the number of pixels is the same in PS. Changing the compression does not change the resolution. You can change the file size of a closed JPEG by either increasing the compression (as you did) or by leaving the compression the same and reducing the resolution. Compression works by throwing away data and representing similar areas in an image with fewer values to make the image smaller in file size, but looking approximately the same. As you throw away more and more data with higher compression values, you get the smaller file size at the expense of the quality of the image (which you saw as pixelation). When you open the image, it is reconstructed to the same number of pixels, even though more adjacent pixels have the same colors.
It depends on the purpose you have in wanting a smaller file size whether it is better to reduce the resolution or increase the compression to get it. Sometimes you might do both. For example when I email digital images to clients to choose an image, I will reduce the resolution to screen resolution (say to 4" x 6" at 72 ppi) and greatly increase the compression to lower the quality and make the image less likely to be printed.

    I previously used Vista/PSE6/HP1200 laserjet to print B&W photographs on transparencies.  The photographs were very high quality -- you couldn't see the pixels. My computer crashed, and now I'm using Windows 7/PSE8/the same HP1200 laserjet.  No matter what I do, I cannot replicate the same high quality pictures.  The pixilation remains the same (very noticeable), regardless of my efforts to change resolution.  Help!

    Not sure what you mean by print B&W photographs on transparencies? Perhaps you print onto acetate sheets?
    Could you please give some details of the process and your current print settings?

    I have a Sanyo HDTV and I'm using it as my computer Monitor. The desktop now shows up on the screen, but the position of the desktop is wrong. (tool bars are off screen) and the windows are really big.
    The TV manual gives these settings for hooking up a computer:
    1360x768 16:9 refresh 60hz horizontal freq: 47.71 vertical freq: 60
    Thats resolution is not showing up as an option in nvidia x server settings.
    I tried using xrandr to set up the TV's resolution by adding a new mode
    xrandr --newmode "1360x768_60.00" 84.75 1360 1432 1568 1776 768 771 781 798 -hsync +vsync
    xrandr --addmode default 1360x768_60.00
    xrandr --output default --mode 1360x768_60.00
    xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed
    It didn't work so I tried following another tutorial online and added a modeline to my xorg.cong

    That did not work either and now I'm a bit lost on what to do to get my desktop to show up properly on the screen.
    In windows 7 I had to use some weird settings to get it to work:
    resolution: 1790x1012
    DPI: 125%
    Should I try using those settings?
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    I'm having the same exact problem with my HDTV
    Running latest NVIDIA 256.44-2, it keeps defaulting to 1024x768. Sometimes my monitor will display 1260x768 but nvidia-settings still only shows 1024x768 as the highest resolution.
    Did you end up using 1360x768_60 or 1360x768@60?
    Can you post your xorg.conf?
    And what is the command to get your output of:
    1360x768_60.00 84.75 1360 1432 1568 1776 768 771 781 798 -hsync +vsync

    Edit: I was able to get my resolution to 1280x768 using the xfree86 modeline generator http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl ( i put in 1360 but it defaults to 1280)

  • NEED HELP WITH RESOLUTION AND QUALITY?

    hi guys
    i have been making these vector type portraits in photoshop for the last couple weeks, it has all been going well until, when some one puts it up as a display picture on facebook etc the quality is not as good as when i just view the picture on my computer.
    i have been starting the new in photoshop and using 800x800 pixels and the res at 72 pixels/inch, am i going wrong here some where? or is it the fact that i am using photoshop to do this task? im sure there are a lot of people that will advise me to use illustrator, which i have been thinking about doing. but i would like to know if this can be solved in photoshop first.

    so let me try get this straight lol the picture on the left is on facebook and that the quality is rubbish because its on facebook? 
    because when i opened the one on the right just to look at it, the quality was the same as when it was in photoshop.
    they are both obviously jpg, so it has to be the fact that it is showing from facebook that makes it grainy, right?

    If you are noticing a poor resolution in the viewer immediately after importing the photos this will only be temporary until the background processing has finished (I'm assuming you are running iMovie 10).  Do you still see poor resolution after sharing?

  • Setting Up New FCP5 HD Bay -- Need Help

    I'm setting up an HD edit bay for a friend, and I have a number of questions. Any help would be a godsend.
    Basically, he's got a G5 with Final Cut Studio installed, a Motu audio interface, a Mackie Mixer, a Decklink Pro HD dual link, M-audio LX4 5.1 speakers, and a DVD/VHS recorder. He has one 250G internal capture drive, and one external 1TB firewire G-Raid. He's running a 23" and 20" Cinema Displays, and a Panasonic 32" HD LCD Flatscreen.
    He wants to rent decks per project for capture and output.
    My questions is this, how do we output to SD VHS/DVD or other formats for clients? Do we need a Switcher? Is it possible to do format conversion in Final Cut and output via Firewire instead of decklink to SD devices?
    Also, is SDI (serial digital interface) cross-platform from SD to HD? Kramer Electonics has an interesting format converter that supports SDI, but will that change HD to SD? Here is a model number and link. FC-7402

    You should setup your local DNS to resolve only for the 'film.lab.' domain. Any requests that your local DNS will not be authoritative for should be forwarded to your district's DNS server. You should also set your local DNS to allow recursion only for clients on the 10.x.x.x subnet. The failure of clients configured to use your DNS for name resolution could be due to rules that have bee setup on your district's edge router to block outbound and inbound port 53 requests for all internal clients.
    If you set your server and clients to use your district's DNS server as the secondary for your zone, you must make certain that any hostnames within your local zone are defined on your district's DNS to resolve to the private, 10.x.x.x, subnet that you will be running your systems on. If you don't -and your DNS goes down and there is no secondary defined on the clients that contains the zone info for your subnet- your clients won't be able to find any hosts. If you wish to run services that will be accessible from the Internet on your local server, this may require your network admins to make changes to routing to allow those request to be pass from the public network to the private one.
    Also, if your district runs a central DHCP server you will need your district network admins to setup their DHCP server to return the correct client settings for your DNS and search domains for the clients within your subnet. If they do run a central DHCP server, do not attempt to set up a local one for your subnet. If you do, the probability that you will receive a very angry phone call from a not so happy fellow at your district is very high.

    I need help with a website I've created (www.jonathanhazelwood.com/lighthouse) I created the folowing site with dreamweaver at my current resolution 1366 by 768. Looks great on my screen resolution but if it is viewed on other resolutions the menu moves and some of the text above and below.     Look at all the apdiv's you have.  Those are absolutely positioned layers.  I'm assuming by your post that you are very new to Dreamweaver and HTML and CSS.  I would highly recommend not using absolutely positioned layers until you have a better grasp on HTML and CSS.
    Looking at your code I would suggest that you consider using one of Dreamweaver's built in, or downloadable templates as a starting point and work from there.

  • Need help choosing optimal hardware for a laptop that will run AE CS5

    BACKGROUND INFO (Questions listed below)
    I need some help figuring out the best hardware configuration for a new laptop. I’m a student at a design school and I will be using the laptop to mainly run After Effects and to a lesser extent Photoshop and Illustrator. I don’t need to worry about 3D rendering software or Premier Pro. I am primarily interested in getting the best performance during editing. I am not looking for the best performance for final output. I would prefer to sacrifice final output times for better editing/interface performance.
    I will be working with standard definition content and perhaps HD up to 720p on occasion. I do not need to operate in resolutions higher than 720p. My projects are generally animation and use many sources and many layers.
    I’ve been reading up on optimal hardware configurations for CS5 but my understanding is still a little foggy and I would like to use this thread to figure out how to build the best machine for my budget. The budget is about $1400 to $1600 CANADIAN after tax.
    I DON’T need help finding the laptop. I will search for it on my own. I just need to understand the best hardware to purchase within my budget.
    I realize that it is probably impossible to buy the laptop I want with the hardware configuration I need “off the shelf”. Instead I will be looking for a good base model (~$900-$1100) and I will purchase the necessary hardware upgrades separately. I will not be purchasing a Mac.
    Right now I’m thinking of a machine built something like this:
    - 15”-16” screen (17” models are too big/heavy)
    - Mid to high end i5 processor OR entry level i7 quad core
    - 8GB RAM (I would go to 12GB, but it’s hard to find a 15”-16” laptop with 3 memory slots)
    - SSD to replace HDD (However, if possible, I would like a laptop with dual HDD support or swap the optical drive for another HDD. If I had access to 2 drives, I would have and HDD/SSD combo).
    - Medium/high end NVIDIA GPU to take advantage of OpenGL while editing.
    QUESTIONS
    1) Does the “Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously” option enhance general editing performance (applying filters, scrubbing through the timeline, reverting history states)? Or does it ONLY help speed up RAM previews and final output? Does it reduce the length of RAM previews?
    1b) Is this option even necessary to enable on 64bit systems? (As far as I understand it was used to solve a problem where 32bit systems/software would only recognize 4GB of RAM per instance of AE).
    1c) If I turn this option on to help with RAM previews, would I be hindering general editing performance in any way? Or does this option have basically zero drawbacks?
    2) How come “Actual CPUs that will be used” will read 0 even if the sum total of RAM assigned to the CPUs plus the RAM reserved for other applications is less than the total available system RAM (on a 64bit system)? For example, I currently have 4GB RAM and 2 installed CPUs. I have 1.5GB reserved for other programs and when I set 0.75GB per CPU both CPUs are used. However when I set 1GB per CPU then 0 CPUs are used, even though the total RAM adds up to only 3.5GB.

    3.) Considering the fact that I am more concerned with smooth performance while editing rather than final output speeds, would it be better to get a dual core i5 clocked around 2.5 or a quad core i7 clocked around 1.8?
    4.) What is the difference between an i3 and an i5 processor even if they are clocked at the same speed? How does an i5 460M compare on the grand scheme of things?
    RAM
    6.) Should the quantity of RAM that I get (8GB vs 12GB) be based on the number of cores in my CPU? If so, how should I be calculating optimal RAM based on # of cores. Should I also be counting threads, or just actual physical cores?
    STORAGE/SWAP
    7.) Should I replace the HDD with an SSD? I'm looking for snappy interface performance while editing. I would think that if the RAM fills up it would be best to have the SSD for scratch/cache.
    8.) What performance benchmarks are most important when considering an SSD for After Effects? (4k writes? IOs per second? Max read/write?)
    9.) I can afford the OCZ Vertex2 120GB SSD. Would this be a good choice if an SSD is recommended?
    10.) Would it be better to have 8GB of RAM and an SSD, or 12GB of RAM and an HDD? Explain why.
    GPU
    10.) After Effects utilizes OpenGL to enhance editing performance. I will not really be using Premier Pro, so catering to the CUDA Mercury Engine is not a concern. Do high end gaming cards provide significant gains in OpenGL performance? Or do OpenGL performance gains taper off around the mid-range GPUs? (i.e. can you justify buying a high end GTX 260M graphics card for enhanced editing performance versus an "entry level" dedicated card like the 310M?)
    11.) What hardware specs are most important when considering a GPU for editing performance in AE? (Memory size? # of Pixel shaders? Core speed? Shader speed?)

    It only increases rendering speed for RAM previews and rendering for final output. In After Effects CS5, it doesn't decrease the length of RAM previews. (In CS4, it does.)

    You misunderstood. Yes, it's still relevant on 64-bit computers. Moreso, in a way. (I'd rather not spend my entire Sunday writing out detailed answers to satisfy idle curiosity, so I'm not going to give all the technical detail to that answer.)

    It takes a small but nonzero time for the background processes to start up when they need to be used and shut down when they're done. And as they sit waiting, they take up a little bit of memory. So, it's not exactly correct to say that there are no downsides to leaving it on. But it's close. I leave it on.

    4GB - 1.5GB for other software leaves 2.5 GB for After Effects.
    If you have 1GB assigned per background CPU, then the foreground takes 1.2x that = 1.2GB. That leaves 1.3GB for background processes, which is enough for one background process. There's no point in starting only one background process to do rendering, so it doesn't bother. (Note: When background processes are rendering, the foreground process isn't rendering.)

    Get the quad-core. That gives you a greater total number of cycles. And After Effects works very well with mutliple processors, even beyond Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing. An entirely unrelated sort of multiprocessing (multithreading) spreads work out to multiple processors.

    The optimum amount is the amount that you can cram into the computer. I'm not kidding. Spend your budget on RAM until you have 4GB installed per processor (and I'm counting the virtual processors due to hyperthreading). If you have a quad-core, that's 8 CPUs with hyperthreading, so the optimum amount of RAM installed is 32GB. You can work with less, but you did ask about optimum. For HD work (i.e., 1920 pixels across), you're OK with more like 3GB installed per CPU. That's what I have at home: 24GB in a quad-core. You're going to assign 2/3 or so of the RAM to After Effects, so 3GB installed per CPU is 2GB per core for HD work in After Effects.

    12GB of RAM. Because After Effects likes RAM. (If you're thinking of deliberatly using virtual memory to swap memory to the hard disk, don't. That's a performance killer.)

    Not really. If you're on a limited budget, don't even think about the GPU until you've already got the most RAM, the fastest CPUs, the largest number of CPUs, two fast hard disks, and a couple of good monitors. Then, and only then, should you even consider getting soemthing beyond a non-stock graphics card. Yes, OpenGL can be used to accelerate some things, but that's only for the low-fidelity preview renderer. (Pardon the bluntness, but I want to make sure that you heed this.)

    One day out of the blue, Itunes began to open by itself interrupting pandora and playing at the same time with other videos and/or music that is playing on my computer. I have called The guys from mac support and they re started my computer, deleted Itunes helper, widgets are off, checked on activity monitor. It works find for couple of hours and then Itunes open automatically, even after I force quit i tunes.  I change the headsets with no resolution.  I even loaded up again Lion and nothing.  Yesterday, after I sync my iphone 4 and I was listening to a video, Itunes began to do the the same as on my MACBOOK PRO 2011.  I rebooted the phone and it appears to be working find.  What is this bug that Itunes 10.5 seems to have?  I have tried to delete Itunes form application folder and is not deleting it. Also I redownloaded Itunes again and it worked find for a day or 2 and then the problem persisted. th e CDs that came with the laptop to reset to original donot work because I loaded up Lion. Please I need help?   thanks

    I am in the process of designing a new website for myself,
    and while I was researching nicely designed pages to use as
    inspiration, I stumbled upon this site:

    one thing I need help with is backgrounds. as you can see in
    the posted website, the creator used a seamlessly tiled paper
    texture to display the bulk of his content on. also make not of the
    pattern that is located to the left of the paper texture. how do I
    create seamless backgrounds like this that will scale to fit any
    amount of content or any resolution? I can't imagine that the guy
    that made that site created a new size background every time he
    made an update, so there has to be an easier way.
    the second thing that I am having trouble with is general
    site layout. I have read that most sites used series of invisible
    tables to organize there content, but when I open the source of
    this page in dreamweaver, he was using something different. div
    tags? should I be using these? who do I use them? are there any
    general layout tips that someone could pass on to me? perhaps a
    link to a good tutorial?

  • Need help hooking up Maxent 42" Plasma to mac mini

    i have a newly acquired maxent 42" plasma product number mx42xm11 i called their rep and he said it wouldnt work but i have read a couple forums where people have gotten other maxent monitors to work i was wondering if someone could help me set this one up.

    I searched and found this:
    Input/Output connections
    2 x Composite video input (RCA phono), 1 x DVI-HDCP (24 pin digital DVI), 2 x S-Video input (4 pin mini-DIN), 2 x HD component input (RCA phono x 3), 1 x VGA input (15 pin HD D-Sub (HD-15)), 6 x Audio line-in (RCA phono x 2), 1 x Subwoofer output (RCA phono), 1 x Audio line-out (RCA phono x 2), 1 x VGA output (15 pin HD D-Sub (HD-15)), 1 x Serial (9 pin D-Sub)
    It looks as simple as connecting a standard VGA cable from the Mini to the VGA port. It also listed the resolution as 1024x768, which is a standard 4:3 resolution.
    You could also try a DVI cable as long as your DVI input looked similar to tha back of your Mini.
    Where would you need help?

  • Need help with image

    I sure could use a buddy who has Skype or something who I can shoot questions like this to.  My designer wants a retainer of $3,000 but I can do most of my own stuff in Photoshop.  Sometimes I get stumped though, and just need a 30 second tutorial. So I am coming here. 
    I basically need to figure out how to change this image:
    But along with that comes figuring out how to change it from a square image to one with a rounded top and bottom-right corner.   Also a 2 pixel shadow going up the right side and along the bottom.  I can manually draw in those two pixels easily enough.  But the corners look terrible when I try to manually do it.
    Is there an easier way?  I have been cropping the new image to the proper size, and then drawing in the two pixel fade on the side and bottom.  Then trying to pixel by pixel create the rounded edges.
    Its not looking natural. 
    Before you say "Its a drop shadow!" please remember, in order for me to copy that exact drop shadow, I would need to know all their settings, colors, pixel widths, etc.  All I have is a flat, finished image, so I have none of that information.  Plus, I dont know how to do a drop shadow on a curved corner, which deletes the original squared corner on the image.  :-\
    If you give instructions, please be as clear and detailed as possible. This is why I prefer a chat medium for this type of thing.

    Don't know what magnification you are using on this image, but the fact you have pixels shows it will be difficult to make a nice rounded edge.
    You might need a higher resolution image, or at least convert from 8 bits to 16 bits to do edits, then change back to 8 RGB to save.  Beware not all toolsand saves will work in 16 bit.

    I didn't quite understood your issue.
    Are you trying to delete the content in PDF file?
    You cannot edit the content of the PDF file using Adobe Reader.
    Or are you trying to delete the document(PDF) file?
    You should be able to delete the PDF file like any other file on your computer.
    Please explain your problem in detail, this will help me to find a resolution quickly.
