Need help viewing mov. files in Quicktime 10, with Mac OS X, 10.6.7

I have Quicktime 10.0, and laptop with Mac Os X, version 10.6.7. I can't view certain mov files. So I looked up info online, that said to download Quicktime verson 7 to run with Version 10.0. When I downloaded Quicktime 7, I was told I could not install it because I already had Quicktime 10.0. Could definitely use some help!

Thank you so much! I successfully download the other version of Quicktime.
But, I'm still unable to view my mov file. I looked at the 'more info' tab and the Codecs is: MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM, Timecode.
Any ideas of how I can get this file to play in Quicktime, or open in Final Cut?

    .mov is Apple "Quicktime".
You should be able to download a player here:   http://apple.com/quicktime

  • Need help exporting .mov files for editing in PE3

    hi,
i'm trying to export HD .mov files from an Aiptek GO-HD camcorder that seems to record in QT format with some funky codecs. I need to export it into a format that i can edit on a PC using Premier Elements 3.0. The few tests i've run have shown a huge increase in size when exporting from .mov to .avi (100m to 30 GB).
Does anyone have any suggestions or experience doing this?

You just need to open the .mov file with Elements.
You don't need to convert it using QuickTime Pro
    first.
Premiere may "convert" it to some other format to
allow editing (I don't know) and that would only take
    some time at import.
HD files are anywhere from 10 to 60 MB's per second
(some even higher) so a DV version will drastically
    increase in file size.
What, besides editing, is the goal of your work?
that doesn't work with this camcorder. apparently the encoding is called QT, but it really isn't. i have to export into something else in order to edit.
the goal of my work is to convert choppy family video into something clean that i can share with friends and family via CD / DVD (not streaming on net).

  • Need help automating movies export using QuickTime Pro 7.4

I would like to convert several movies (.mov) to .3gp and .mp4 for mobile phones. I found some sample code here to accomplish the automation process:
    http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/QuickTime/idxQuickTimeforWindows-date.html #doclist
I built the sample QTControlCommandLine which is a command line program to convert a file from one format to another. When I use this program to convert a .mov file, there's no audio in the resulting .3gp (or .mp4); however when I manually convert the file (i.e. start QuickTime, load the .mov file and then export to .3gp), the resulting file is fine, with audio. I looked at the resulting files from both processes (using QT's view movie properties), and sure enough the manual process produces a file WITH an audio track, while the automated (COM) process produces one WITHOUT an audio track.
Has anyone encountered this problem? Is there some simple flag that the sample program failed to toggle to allow audio to be exported? I appreciate any leads to solve this issue.

Found my own answer. It is a licensing issue as indicated here:

  • Need help importing MOV files into iMovie

I am trying to import MOV files from a USB disk -- into iMovie's event library. When I click on the files on the USB -- they are grey and won't import. They will play in QuickTime. What could the problem be? I have the latest OS and am up to date.

Can you maybe try converting them? Download the free program called Miro Video Converter from the Mac App Store. Drag the video into the window and set the output format as mp4. iMovie should import that properly.
Sorry I couldnt be more of a help.

  • How to view mov files on quicktime?

Recently downloaded a movie made on iphone, which downloaded as a .mov file. However, when I double click, quicktime tries to open it but then I get an error message which says "QuickTime Player can't open "IMG_18621.MOV". and gives me an option: "To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More."  I can't figure out a way past this. I was on Mountain Lion and didn't have this problem, but recently upgraded to Mavericks and this problem has developed. Thanks!

Thank you for your prompt responses. Thought this was the correct answer. Didn't want to pass on incorrect information.
    Thanks

  • Need help setting up file for program Ai CS5 Mac

Hello everyone, I am hoping you can help me with something. I am having a 20 page conference program printed through a 3rd party company. The printer sent me back the proof today and on almost every page my artwork is being chopped off.
This is the email sent with the proof today:
"               I want you to look at these spreads and tell me if this is how you       visualized your finished pages? A lot of your art is being cut off. The finished size is 11x17.       You sent pages that were 9x12, so I used them at 100% on the 12x18       press sheet. You only need to provide a 1/8" bleed, not a 1/2". You also have       bleeds on the centers of the spreads. Those should not have a bleed. Only the outside 3 edges should       bleed.
I had trouble getting all of the art to line up."
    Printer Info:
They print on 12/18 trimmed down to 11 x 17 (for full bleed)
    Requested bleed: 1/8
    They print out of Quark
I was told I can send them individual PDFs and they will paginate them (in order and add page numbers)
I created a file in Ai CS5 with 20 artboards (one for each page of the program) Now, the trim marks should be placed at 1 inch because they are trimming 1 inch from the top and 1 inch from the bottom. The bleed should be 1/8 so 0.125 on the 3 "outside" edges. Is this correct?
I primarily do lay-outs, the person responsible for this project bailed last minute so I am a bit stuck. If I am designing it as individual pages what are the exactly dimensions, bleed, and trim marks needed for each page to be set up correctly for the printer to paginate. Should I also add a .5 margin along the edges as a safe zone or is that not necessary because of the bleed?
Let me know if I didn't provide enough information. I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance!
    -d

It is often just simpler to build your pages (or spreads) to the actual size of the press sheet.
    I'll assume this is a saddle-stitched booklet.
The press sheets will be 12 x 18 inches.
It will be printed, then, as 11 x 17 printer spreads.
That means it will have a half inch (not a whole inch) between the trims and the press sheet edges on all four sides.
There will be three-eights inch between the bleed and the edges.
(This is crowding things a tad; typically one tries to allow at least a half-inch gripper margin.)
    Anyway....
    1. Setup the document with twenty 9x12 vertical Artboards, with zero spacing, in two columns. Zero Bleed.
(Often, depending on the nature of the content, I would choose to build such a thing as ten 12 x 18 Artboards, with content already arranged as printing spreads, thus eliminating the need for stripping. But in the following, you'll go ahead and make 20 separate Artboards, abutted in pairs, and treat these as two-page reader spreads, to make layout easy, and to accommodate artwork that may jump the gutter.)
    2. Turn on Show Grid. Turn on Snap To Grid.
Rectangle Tool: Click the page. In the dialog, specify a 17 x 11 rectangle. This corresponds to your trim.
Rectangle Tool: Click the page. In the dialog, specify a 17.25 x 11.25 rectangle. This corresponds to your bleed.
Center align the two rectangles to each other, both horizontally and vertically.
    3. Zoom in. White Pointer: Snap the upper left corner of the rectangles to the grid at .375 H and .375 V of the top left Artboard.
    4. Convert the two rectangles to Guides. (View>Guides>Make)
    5. Line Tool: Snapping to the grid, draw your own trim marks at each corner, outboard of the trim. Use .25 pt. stroke weight. Registration color.
    6. Unlock Guides. (turn off View>Guides>Lock)
    7. Black Pointer: Marquee select around all the trim marks and the two rectangluar Guides.
DoubleClick the Black Pointer. In the resulting Move dialog, enter a vertical movement of 12" and click copy.
Transform Again (Ctrl D) 8 times.
Now you have a set of trim guides, bleed guides, and trim marks on all 10 two-page reader spreads.
    8. Create the content as if the pairs of Artboards are facing pages of reader spreads. The top pair are the front and back. The other pairs are sequentially-numbered reading speads. Set up this way, your artwork can jump the gutter when desired.  You can put other printer's marks (sep names, etc.) in the bleed area if needed.
    9. Save A Copy to PDF with Use Artboards checked. The resulting PDF will contain 9x12 vertical pages. Viewed as spreads in Acrobat, you can see that the pages align.
    10. But when they are printed, they will be stripped into two-page printing spreads, ordered like so:

  • Need help: enter flash file in Dreamweaver site with dark background

    Hi,
I've entered a SWF in a dreamweaver site with a dark blue
background. When you view the site in a browser there is a white
square (the size of the flash file) that flashes up for a second
before the file starts loading. This is rather ugly and I was
wondering if anyone knew how to avoid this white square from
    flashing up.
I already tried making the table background dark blue and
adding a dark blue square as a background image, but that has not
    made any difference.
If you'd like to see what it does, this is a link to one of
    the pages: www.billmather.co.uk/portraits.htm
Thank you in advance for any help or advice you can give me!

    Hi Horus,
Thank you for getting back to me. I found it, and tried it.
But still does not seem to make a difference. This is what the code
    in dreamweaver now looks like:

    ); //end AC code
    </script>

    type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="850"
    height="660"></embed>
    </object>
Did I enter it correctly? (I also tried it as <param
name="bgcolor" value="#000033"> but that did not work either) Or
do we still need to find another solution?
Thanks ever so much for all your suggestions and ideas. I

  • Can't view .mov file with quicktime

Hello. I need help viewing a .mov file with Quicktime 7.5. It was recorded on a Canon Vixia HV30 camcorder and given to me on a dvd. But when I try to view the .mov file with Quicktime, I can hear the audio but the screen is black. Sometimes, it asks me to continue to the following link:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=Windows&ctype=696d64 63&csubtype=69636f64
I'm not that computer savvy - what is wrong? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Sorry. My "then" (above) should have been "they".
They sent you a data DV containing the "source" from the camera and the HDV codec isn't available on your PC so you can't view the file.
Ask the authors to convert the file using H.264 Video codec (or others) so your Windows version of QuickTime can play the file.

    Help!
    Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

  • Help converting Mov files

    Hello all,
I need help finding a download or solution that will help me convert my mov files to some format that imovie 6 will understand. I transferred them from my camcorder via USB and now they are in a folder on my desktop and they are all listed in Mov files and cannot be opened. Thanks for any advice you have to offer.
    Valerie

You should get MPEG Streamclip as it will do exactly what you want. It is a free download:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Files designated .mov don't tell you anything about what format they are actually in, .mov is a 'container' that can hold different formats. If you open the original .mov file in QuickTime and then go Window>Show Movie Inspector, you will see what format the file is in. If these are clips from a still camera, they are probably MPEG-2.
So you will also need Apple's MP2 playback component as Streamclip needs it for MPEG2 -> .DV conversions. It is $20, and available here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
Download both. Open Streamclip and drag a .mov file to its window. Select the option to convert to DV. You can set it for NTSC or PAL, depending on where you live. If the .mov clip is rotated, you can correct that. The clip will save as .dv and you can just drag it into your iMovie.

I have a .mov file that plays on my mac but when someone tries to play it on a pc, they get an error 128 message. Help! Please!

This is not the problem. We are using quicktime on the pc's and the mac. I also tried to open the file on the pc with other programs and it doesn't recognize the file. The file opens fine on my mac but I cannot save it as a new file. It says that "the end of the file was reached." The recording was made in iShowU then edited in Quicktime Pro.
