Need help with Mac Pro (2008) iCloud sync problem

I am using a Mac Pro (Early 2008) with multiple drives and partitions, some of which I use for various software testing.  I wanted to have access to the same data on various partitions, so I tried to use iCloud to store some Pages files. I found that in the Mountain Lion Partition that I normally use, that the document data ( Pages, Numbers, etc) would not upload to the cloud... just showed as waiting. All other iCloud Data ( Calendar, Address Book , etc) did sync fine. If I accessed iCloud using a browser or looked on iClould using the iCloud Manage function in the iCloud system preferences, I could see all the files.  I then found that I did have another Mountain LIon partition in which the data syncing all worked.  Other testing showed that if I did a clone of the working partition using SuperDuper, the clone worked properly, but if I did a clean install of 10.8.4, the document data did not sync.If I did a clean install and used the migration assistant to migrate from the working partition, it still did not work.  I later found that if I replaced the top level Library file in a non working partition with the one from the working partition, that I could make the non working partition sync properly. I have not been able to find a subset of the folder that would make things work, but have not tried every combination. At this point my only conclusion is that there must be a bug in the 10.8.4 installer. Apple has been working on this for a few weeks, but has not found anything and cannot duplicate... but they are testing with iMacs.
Is there anyone with a Mac Pro (2008) who can do a clean install of 10.8.4 on a partition and see if they can still access their iCloud data (Pages, Numbers, Etc). If so that would probably confirm the otherwise unexplanable problem.

  • Need help with Mac Pro purchasing decision

I've read preliminary reviews on the new Mac Pro, and I'm ready to upgrade my current Mac Pro (which is Dual 2.4 Ghz Quad-core with 32 GB RAM).  But I'm going through some major turmoil in the decision.  My current Mac Pro, aged as it may be, has been good to me, and when it needed upgrading, it was so easy to do.  I installed an additional two internal hard disks, giving the Mac Pro 3 TBs of internal storage.  RAM upgrade was a breeze, and when the graphics card went out, I was able to buy and install a replacement without a hiccup.
I love the low profile of the new Mac Pro, albeit I'll still be putting it on the floor - I don't like having my desktop computer in my desk work area.  And it looks like upgrading the RAM in the new Mac Pro is pretty simple (although horribly expensive).  I would require a CD/DVD drive, so that becomes a piece of "stuff" I have to clutter my work are with.  However, most importantly, the internal storage issue, FOR ME, is huge.  Without the ability to add internal drives, getting the 1TB flash storage is a must, but sooooooo expensive.  AND.. I still need additional storage (more than half of my current 3 TBs is in use).
Moreover, the whole lack of upgradability has me concerned that the new Mac Pro may disappear like the G4 Cube.  I haven't seen any rave reviews of the new Mac Pro overall.
    But I need to upgrade.
I have configured a new Mac Pro on the Apple Store about 100 times now, but never making the purchase for all of the above reasons, as well as the $5K price tag that it keeps ending up at.   I even started looking at refurbished Mac Pros (newer than mine, but the same old huge silver case).  The advantage is that it's upgradeable, and I won't end up with an optical drive or external hard drives cluttering my desk space.
The truth is, every time I go to buy, either a new Mac Pro, or a refurbished one, I hit a wall.  I'm walking the fence, wondering if I should walk it until a newer Mac Pro shows up with more expandability options (although it seems unlikely since Apple's direction seems to be form over function).
The new Mac Pro has been out for awhile, so I am looking for feedback from people who are kind of in my shoes, but already bit the bullet.  I don't want to encourage replies of regret, but I also would prefer the truth over grandiose reviews simply to justify making the leap (and dropping some huge bills).  It happens... "I just spent 5 grande, I better **** well love it, and I'll make sure everyone else thinks I do!"   ;-)
Please share your experiences.  How have you gotten around the lack of upgradeability on the internal storage?  I have had bad experiences with external drives in the past.  Firewire drives were fast and furious, but the were not as reliable as internal drives.  USB drives lag, and that dreaded spin up time every time the Mac OS does something that wakes up all the drives, even if the external drives weren't actually being accessed (never had that problem with Firewire drives, maybe because they were always spun up?).
Anyway, I don't want my buyer's pain to turn into buyer's remorse, so I appreciate all the wisdom any of you would be willing to share.
    Thanks,
    Bill

I'll offer my comments although there are others much better qualified to answer than I am.
First, the reason I bought the machine that I got was that I found an "open box" deal at a local retailer and got a substantial discount from the normal list price. Otherwise, I might not have gone to the nMP quite as quickly as I did. Regarding ram and the ssd drive, both of these can be upgraded at some later date if I find that is needed. The ram I will probably bump asap, filling the one empty slot with likely an 8gb OWC module.
To run your VGA monitors, you will need 2 passive mini-display port to VGA adapters. You can buy these pretty much anywhere, the Apple ones are superb quality at a price but other options are out there. These will plug into 2 of the Thunderbolt ports on the nMP.
Regarding cpu's and gpu's it gets a bit confusing. Basically right now it depends on the software that you are going to run. It is not likely coincidence that FCPX 10.1 came out basically at the same time as the nMP, as it really highlights full use of the multicore cpu's plus the dual fast gpu's. FCPX really screams on the nMP.
Right now, it seems more video software is making optimum use of both the multicore cpu's and dual gpu's in the nMP. Other software, most notably photo software that should also benefit, is lagging behind. For instance (going only from memory) Adobe software is not very good at using multi-core cpu's nor does it use multiple gpu's either. You can find comparisons of running Photoshop filters on a 3.7ghz 4-core vs the (slower clock speed) 6 or 8 cores and the 4-core comes out close or even faster in some tests because Photoshop uses only a single core, which on the 4-core machine is faster.
However, this is a pretty specific instance and generally buying the fastest cpu and gpu that you can afford is a good plan. Especially so for the gpu's as right now, the video may end up being the only component that does not end up with some sort of upgrade option in the foreseeable future.
If I was going to order a system under the circumstances you have stated, the 6-core with the D500 gpu's sure looks like the sweet spot in the lineup, and probably money well spent. After I would probably upgrade the ssd next, since in order to upgrade it later you have to remove a perfectly good ssd since there is only one slot. Personally I am ok with the 256gb as my boot and system drive, since with Thunderbolt you have basically PCIe access to an external box that can have either Sata or PCIe expansion for whatever storage you can afford.
As I said earlier, right now I am going cheap and using Apples Thunderbolt to firewire cable, which is allowing me to run my existing Lacie firewire drives in a daisy chain just as I did on the old MP.
Upgrading the ram at purchase or later is your choice, there are certainly less expensive options but with only 4 slots you have to weigh the cost of discarding or trading in the original Apple ram when you decide to swap it out for bigger modules. Plus not all ram can be mixed and matched, you may have to remove all the existing ram in order to add just a single high capacity (16gb or larger) module.
Again, hope I have helped more than adding to your confusion.

    Welcome to the forum.
First thing that I would do would be to look at this Adobe KB Article to see if it helps.
Next, I would try the tips in this ARTICLE.
If that does not help, a Repair Install would definitely be in order.
    Good luck,

  • Intel 320 160gb SSD any issues with mac pro 2008?

    Hi there.
I have a mac pro 2008.  and Install Intel 320 160gb ssd. and boot...
    It's shows black screen...
is any one has that issue? I tested that SSD with my old quad mac pro 2007, it works fine...
    Please help me....

The 2600XT required 10.5.2+ and while it may 'look' like a G5 the Mac Pro is not. G5 refers to IBM PowerPC based, not Intel Xeon EFI based.
You're running 10.6.3, might want to update your profile itself.

  • Please Help! Mac Pro 2008 Power Problem!

Hi there! The reason of this message is to let you guys know about my problem
Last Thursday i was working all night with my 2008 Mac Pro. Early in the morning went to shut down my computer and discovered that i had a "no video signal" in my Dell monitor. Tried to solve that but i couldnt solve it. So I did a force shut down with the button
During the evening when ive returned home i tried to start up my computer but nothing happened when I press the Power button but a "click" sound.
This computer always performed really well. But right now my computer is not doing anything -no power- but that sound ive mentined.
I want to know if my computer is going to work with a new power supply or is something even worse -hope not-
Thanks a lot for all your help in advance!!

I have seen these symptoms before.
It could be a component like hard disk, video card or worse, power supply.
If you are getting a "click" sound what you want to do is see if the Mac can respond to a component missing.
Like hearing a heart beat through sound. Disconnecting components is a valid troubleshooting process.
Disconnect the following until you hear a chime:
    1. All peripherals including display -- USB, FireWire, etc.
    2. Video Card
    3. Hard disk
    4. RAM
If you hear a "heartbeat" add components back until it goes zombie again. Then at least you will know which thing needs replacing.
May also try zapping PRAM  at boot: CMD-OPT-P-R
One time a MacPro was catatonic.
I booted to another drive with DiskWarrior. DW brought it back to life.
    Good Luck

I've downloaded the latest software upgrades but Ive got no idea how to set up quicktime to work with java 1.4.1
Now to add on top of that mac reports it can use AES encryption. this is from source code ripped striaght from this website.
But first and foremost can anyone, annyonee help me out with setting up 1.4.1 with quicktime?
    Thank you

If you need encryption with Java 1.3.1, download the JCE from either Sun (http://java.sun.com/products/jce/) or Bouncy Castle (http://www.bouncycastle.org/).

  • I need help with Quicktome Pro

    Hi
Is there anyone that can help me by explaining in details how to edit TV shows with Quicktime Pro. Or, is there a better tool to edit .mpg files, in the mac world ?
    Thanks

QuickTime Pro can't edit any muxed file format (MPEG 1 or 2 and Flash) and can only convert the video portion of the file to other formats.
MPEG Streamclip (free) can edit those files and convert them to QuickTime formats.

  • Need help with Go Pro Hero 3 and Premiere Pro CS6

    Hello,
I recently acquired PP CS6. I put my clip (30 seconds long) and I go to preview while editing, for the first 1.5 seconds it is fine but then it is very choppy. The audio is fine but the video does not play smoothly. When I save and process the video it is fine. It is frustrating to try to edit video this way. I'm sure I'm missing a step when creating the project but I haven't used Premiere Pro since CS6. This is only happening with Go Pro Hero 3 videos, any of my other cameras are fine. Any ideas? Thanks

There's a lot of confusion over how video encoding affects subsequent editing performance - a higher data rate has no direct relation to how much effort is required to decode and play the footage, in fact a higher data rate often makes playback easier - which is why transcoding to AVI can help with playback even though the files can be hundreds of times larger. Data rates with the same codec depend on the frame contents and recording quality, but for playback and editing what matters is the GOP (group-of-pictures) structure and the complexity of the encoding algorithm. Provided your disks are fast enough the data rate is immaterial to Premiere.
With long-GOP files (as typically created by consumer DSLRs and helmet cams) we have keyframes (I-frames) with a complete set of pixel data, then a series of intervening P- and B-frames which only store the difference between 'now' and 'one frame before' or 'one frame after'. Unless you're on an I-frame you have to calculate the chain of differences from the nearest I-frame, and when editing or applying an effect we must  re-calculate the entire GOP, so Premiere has to hold a lot of data in the buffer. Remember all timelines in Premiere are internally transcoded to 32-bit floating point, so it's more work to 'play' the footage in the monitors than would be done by a simple playback-only application such as VLC, or in some other brands of NLE that only work in the footage's color space. Premiere's hardware acceleration (MPE) only kicks in once the buffer has been ingested, all the decoding of the original H.264 frames happens in your CPU.
With digital cinema cameras and some hacked DSLRs, we record "all-I" footage - so there's no GOP overhead and playback/editing is massively smoother. I can scrub all-I footage from a hacked 7D no problem on my relatively-ancient spare laptop, but the  long-GOP files from a factory 7D struggle to play at all. Our all-I 7D footage can hit 300MBit/s compared to 35 for long-GOP. Helmet cams such as the GoPro do all they possibly can to squeeze data onto their storage cards, which means they have long-GOP codecs that have some of the most complicated compression algorithms out there. The Hero3's implementation of H.264 uses the Ambarella chip, whose files are very small but an utter nightmare to decode - hence far more of a demand on your CPU than an equivalent clip from a DSLR.
    Jim Simon wrote:
Might be the 35 Mbps that is causing the choppy playback.
It shouldn't, assuming sufficient hardware.  My GH2 clips often get up to over 90 Mb/s and play just fine on an older i7 920.

  • Mac Pro 2008 USB port problems - persistent

    Hello all,
    I have a 2008 Mac Pro - standard config : 2.8Ghz 2Go Ram ATI 2600.
At the outset I did a clean install onto a 1To Seagate drive.
From day 1, and before adding any third party applications, the aluminium keyboard would suddenly stop working. If I changed this for my old G5 plastic keyboard, I had no problem. The aluminium keyboard would work again sometimes if I changed USB port, sometimes only after rebooting.
This problem occurred randomly, a few, or many times a day.
Apple, after going thru' a number of tests with me over the phone, finally sent me a new keyboard (after having sent 2 white plastic models). This changed nothing. I then had a problem with the white plastic keyboard and one day, with a USB drive linked to a USB port I got the error message of having disconnected the disk without having ejected it first. That told me that the problem was not with the keyboard but with the USB ports (power to them?).
I did a clean install (with erase disk 1 pass) under 10.1.5 - the problem didn't go.
I then did a clean install again 10.1.5 followed immediately by upgrade 10.5.2 and the graphics upgrade. I installed no third party apps for 2 days. I had no problems. I installed some apps. No problems for 3 days. I ran all this time on a plastic keyboard. Today I plugged in the aluminium keyboard. No problems for 8 hours and suddenly tonight everythings starts over again.
I've had to do 4 reboots in the last hour. I'm back on the plastic keyboard. But if I lose that like last time I'm pretty convinced that this is a hardware issue.
Curiously I have not seen this problem cited in any forums on the Apple boards and other Mac
    sites.
    Any ideas ?
I wan't this machine changed. It's my work tool and I can't afford to lose so much time…nor to get so frustrated.
    Apple, Help ! Please !

P.S. My first Mac was a MAC SE !!

I think there is a problem with the usb ports on the MacPro which I also think is causing some of the bluetooth problems that are being reported around. Here's why.
I have a "base" new MacPro (2xQuad 2.8, 320G drive, etc.). After getting the unit going with the standard usb keyboard and mouse I then paired my Apple wireless keyboard and mighty mouse. All worked fine. Then the problems started. I have security set that requires a log in when booting, however after restarting, or rebooting, the MacPro the wireless keyboard and mouse were no longer recognized and I was stuck at the login screen. If I then connected my original Mac usb keyboard it would not work. The ONLY way I can get the usb keyboard to work is by having it connected when I reboot/restart. Calling Apple support was...well let's just say less than useless. So I have been doing a lot of experimenting on my own. I have finally found out that if I have nothing at all connected to any of the usb ports then the MacPro will recognize my wireless keyboard and mouse (although it does take some time to recognize it). If I connect my usb devices again and reboot...back to the same situation. No connection to my bluetooth devices and my usb keyboard will not work (unless I again reboot with it already attached). Now before you say it's my other usb devices let me tell you what I have....just a Canon printer and a Western Digital USB drive that I use for Time Machine. Both of these units have been working fine for over a year and work absolutely fine when connected to my Mac Book Pro.
I believe the bluetooth device inside is connected to the usb bus internally which is why I think the usb bus is the "root" of the problem. When certain usb devices (and heck it my be almost any usb device) are attached then the usb internal hardware screws up, which kills the bluetooth connection. I believe that this problem may be borderline (not sure if its power, timing, etc.) which is why we see so many issues that are similar, but hard to pin down.
I also believe that Leopard exacerbates this problem (but not sure yet and way too long to detail now....I'm babbling enough).
Right now the only way I can get my machine to work properly is to disconnect my printer and drive, boot the machine and then reconnect them after I have logged in. That sequence seems to work.
I know that isn't any kind of an answer, but you are certainly not the only one and I think this is just another symptom of a larger Apple USB issue. I'm continuing to investigate.
    Good luck all,
    rd

  • Need help with Mac Book Pro?

When I start the mac book pro, the disk drive keeps making noise. The computer can't get any further. Its like its looking for a disc startup. I put the start up disk in there and now it doesn't do anything. Its almost as if it won't boot the hard drive. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Matt

+the disk drive keeps making noise. The computer can't get any further.+
That's sounding like a hard disc failure sadly ...
+I put the start up disk in there and now it doesn't do anything.+
Restart holding down the 'c' key to force it to Boot from the DVD, if that works select Disc Utility from the top menu bar and then 'Repair Disc' and 'Repair Permissions' on the Internal Drive. Post your results here.

  • Need help with Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac

When I paste a picture in a word document and save it, it seems to show up without a problem. But when I go back in to edit or print the document, the picture is no longer there, only a box with a big red X in it (I've inserted a sample of what shows up). Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions, AussieDJ, but unfortunately I don't have a clue under what format to save a document other than as a word document. If anyone out there has encountered this problem with Word 08 and has some suggestions to resolve the issue, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you! Thanks!
