NEED HELP WITH TIME CAPSULE!

Hello, I am new to this forum and this is my first post. Currently I have a Macbook pro and it is really the only computer in my house I use. My Mom has a Macbook, My dad has a Apple Desktop and my brother a toshiba laptop.
I am running OS X 10.5.8 on my macbook pro, Snow Leopard on the other.
Tonight I got the time capsule, and I am really excited to get this working. To give a little background, I have FiOS and our modem is in the basement which runs directly to a verizon wireless router, MI424WR to be exact. I have a few questions about how to set it up because I tried to set it up like they said but when I plugged the Time Capsule into the Fios router and turned it on all I got on the Capsule was the blinking amber light. I ran an ethernet cord from one of the opened LAN ports on the router to the WAN port on the Capsule. I installed the Airport utility on my macbook and my dads desktop but still do not get any type of connection to the capsule. I am reading about bridging so I tried to do the manual set up in the Airport utility it just scanned and got nothing and I cannot even hit manual setup. My questions are..
How exactly do I set up the Time Capsule, as I described it does it sound like I have everything plugged in correctly?
Is it possible to completely get rid of the verizon router?
How do I get any of my computers to pick up the time capsule?
If you have any questions as to how I explained please just ask. I am really trying to get this set up because I do not want my dad to think he wasted 350 dollars on something that is completely useless for our home setup. Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU, Zach.

No matter what, even when the TC is plugged into my MBP with an ethernet cable it does not read it.
Disconnect any ethernet cables that you connected to the Time Capsule at the moment
Hold in the reset button on the back until the amber light begins to blink more quickly and continue holding the button another 4-5 seconds when this occurs. Then release the reset button.
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the available LAN <-> ports on the Verizon router to the WAN (circle of dots icon) port on the Time Capsule.
You have two ways to configure the Time Capsule using either wireless or ethernet.
To use wireless, click on the fan shaped Airport icon at the top of the computer screen and look for a wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. Log on to that network first, then open AirPort Utility.
To use ethernet, temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule. Open AirPort Utility.
When you open AirPort Utility, click Continue to follow the guided setup. You did not indicate whether you want to Time Capsule to provide a wireless network, but most users want that option. So, you when asked how you want to configure the Time Capsule, you would choose the "Create a new wireless network" option.
As the Jolly Giant says, you will need to choose Bridge Mode when you see a choice of how to connect in the setup process. If you are an experienced computer user, you may want to configure the Time Capsule manually, but I would not recommend that you do this unless you know exactly what you are doing.
My next step is to call verizon and say they need to get out here and fix this ** or I will be going back to comcast.
Verizon has nothing to do with the Time Capsule problems that you have encountered. Blaming them will accomplish nothing.

  • Need help understanding Time Capsule file structure and how to get it back

    I have the original Time Capsule on which I backup both my Mac Pro and my wife’s Macbook. When Snow Leopard came out, I successfully used the ‘Restore from Time Machine’ feature on my Mac Pro so I know it has worked. However, my wife’s MacBook harddrive died the other day and I was trying to do the ‘Restore from Time Machine’ and all it would find was a backup from April (when I put her in a new larger drive). Time Machine would not find any backup files newer that April. She stated that she had seen the the Time Machine backup notices regularly and as recent as the day the haddrive died (Nov. 23) so I figured that I should have no problem. Here is what I have found in my trouble shooting and what leads to my questions below.
    This is the file structure I found: (note that our ID’s are ‘Denise’ and ‘John’)
    *Time Capsule* (the drive as listed in my Finder window sidebar under ‘shared’)
    >Folder called ‘Time Capsule’ (when logged in as either ‘Denise’ or ‘John’)
    >>Denise Sparsebundle
    >>>Backup of Denise’s iBook (mounted image)
    >>>>Folder called ‘Backups.backupdb’
    >>>>>Folder called ‘Denise’s iBook
    >>>>>>Single folder with old April backup (not the right files)
    >>John Sparsebundle
    >>>Backup of John’s Mac Pro (mounted image)
    >>>>Folder called ‘Backups.backupdb’
    >>>>>Folder called ‘John’s Mac Pro’
    >>>>>>Folders containing all my backup files
    >Folder Called ‘Denise’ (if logged as ‘Denise’)
    >>Denise’s Sparsebundle (a disk image)
    >>>Backup of Denise iBook (the mounted image. Name from old machine)
    >>>>Backups.Backupdb
    >>>>>Denise’s iBook (Contains the backup I need)
    >Folder Called ‘John’ (if logged in as ‘John’)
    >> (empty)
    For some reason, my wife’s backup files are stored within a folder located at the top level of the Time Capsule drive called ‘Denise’, however, mine are within a folder called ‘Time Capsule’ which is at the same level as the ‘Denise’ folder.
    For some reason, when trying to use Time Machine to recover, it bypasses the top level ‘Denise’ folder which contains the correct files and goes into the ‘Time Capsule’ folder and finds the outdated backup files.
    I would assume that both my backup files and my wife’s should be at the same level of the Time Capsule.
    I was eventually able to use Migration Assistant to recover the files after installing a fresh OS and mounting the correct Sparsebundle image.
    So, my question, how do I get this fixed so that if I have to recover a drive with Time Capsule, it will find the correct files.
    Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any help.

    What I was trying to determine is why different backups for one particular machine are located at different file structure levels on my Time Capsule and why the most resent one for that machine is at a different level that for my other machine. well John, first can you clarify if you are on 10.4.8 as your profile suggests ? if so, i'm wondering how you can use TM at all because TM was introduced with Leo. if you're not on 10.4.8, please update your profile. if you could, please also indicate details of your machine such as available RAM, processor, etc.
    second, what OS is your wife's machine running ?
    third, i frankly don't know too much about TM's file structure or if there indeed is such a thing as the correct one. however, i do know that it is best to leave TM to do its thing (as long as it's working). FWIW, though off-topic, you may want to have a look at this read for further information.
    last but not least, i see TM backups to my TC only as a part of my backup strategy. the backbone of my strategy is to create bootable clone of my startup disk(s) using e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner on a regular basis. while TM is capable of doing a full system restore, i don't trust it as much as a working clone. i use TM to retrieve a file i accidentally trashed a week ago but you cannot boot from a TM backup if your startup disk goes belly up.
    If I have missed this information in either the FAQs or the Troubleshooting article, I would greatly appreciate being pointed to it .
    i expect you didn't miss anything and i'm sorry you didn't find any help there. perhaps if Pondini (author of the FAQ and troubleshooting user tips) reads this thread, you will get the necessary advice on the file structure and more besides.
    good luck to you !

  • Help with Time Capsule

    I set up my new mac mini and hooked up it all up with my old router and all was fine. Solid internet connection. When I switched out router with Time Capsule, I cannot get an internet connection even thought it shows the wi-fi and ethernet is active.
    I went in shopping today for a stronger router (better range and speed) and the sales man suggested the Time Capusle because it was a router with a built in hard drive for back-up.
    Finally - i do have a broadband phone - so I have that thrown in the mix, but it worked fine with my old netgear router and the new mac mini.
    I figured it would be a plug and play change. What am i missing?

    You have done no setup.. what is your broadband type.. adsl or cable or other??
    In any case how are you plugging the TC into whatever provides you internet.. if it is a modem it should be bridged.. and in the case of cable .. shut down and rebooted to allow it to connect. In the case of adsl, you should set the TC to pppoe connection.

  • Needing some help with Time Capsule Error.  New to Apple Support and not super tech smart.

    Can not get the MacBook Pro to back up to Time Capsule.  Can any one help me with the following Error Please?
    The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/XXXXXXXXXX MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use.

    We don't see that error much but it is about the easiest to fix.
    Pull the power on the TC.. count to 10. Plug the power back into the TC.
    Viola.. working TC again.

  • Help with time capsule issues please

    Hi all
    Any help or advise will be greatly appreciated.
    I will give you a little background info as it may be relevant.
    At home we had 2 MacBook pro's that backed up to a 2tb time capsule all worked well, wifi and back ups. Unfortunately both MacBooks where in boot/trunck of the car while we where traveling and the boot had a terrible leak that I was unaware of and both MacBooks where water damaged tried drying them out but both where beyond repair. (Devastation is not the word especially as the car insurance would not pay out)
    Unable to replace both MacBooks We continued to use the time capsule as a wireless router for both our iPhones then after 6 months or so the Internet would go off and the orange flashing light would come on. I just thought it needed reset and so switched it off and back on. Sure enough green light and all is well this became more and more frequently until the orange light stayed on regardless of what I do with no Internet. I've connected an old router which is working fine.
    The good news is that after a year without a MacBook I have a new one arriving tommorow. My main concern is the data on the TC I don't want to loose it but i don't know what to do?
    These are my options as I see it but again any suggestion welcome.
    1)I unpack the new MacBook pro set it up as normal then connect to the TC and check airport utility and hopefully this will tell me it just needs a firmware update. Install the update for TC reboot and check the green light is on, then to a fresh install for the mac and re-install the MacBook from the TC.
    2) when booting up the new MacBook try and find the TC when it asks for it and hope all goes well and it transfers my old MacBook data onto my new one.
    As I say any help or advise would be greatly appreciated, please note my primary concern is not loosing the data on the TC from my old MacBook
    Thanks for all the replys in advance

    It sounds like your TC has become unreliable.. is it a series 1?
    You might need to get it repaired, as it can take several hours to get the backups off the drive.
    Check in UK for local repairers.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repairers
    It is just the power supply gone faulty and repair or replacement should get it going again. The data stored on the hard drive should be ok. Restoring the files from the old TM should be ok.
    The instructions here are extremely helpful for how to recover particular files. As your new laptop will be Lion and you don't want to recover the old OS.. just the various files you had stored.

  • Need help Using Time Capsule As Media Server

    New time capsule owner was wondering if someone could help me set it where i can put all my digital media, Itunes, Dvd-rips on to the TC and use it as a Media Server.
    Thanks for your help fellas

    You will need to run media server on a PC / Mac and use TC as NAS that stored your media files.

  • Help with Time Capsule Double NAT error.

    I've been reading different threads on this problem but have been unable to find a solution.
    I recently replaced a dead SpeedStream modem with a Motorola 3360, per AT&T's (my ISP) recommendation. Since swapping the modem I've had a "Double NAT" error on my Time Capsule. The new modem is the only change.  We connect every device: 1 G5 tower, 1 iMac, 1 iPad, 1 MacBook Pro via our wireless network. The Time Capsule is stand-alone, e.g., not connected to anything but the modem via the either-net cable provided.
    Running 10.7.4, the Airport Utility is 6.0, the TC firmware is up to date as well 7.6.1
    We've never had great speed but now it's slower than usual, I'm assuming because of the Double NAT error (two firewalls).
    I've followed the AT&T website instructions, to the letter, for switching the 3360 to "bridge mode," letting the TC handle the IP address (correct?) = no internet.
    I've also followed the support communities directions for switching the Time Capsule to bridge mode as well, letting the modem handle the IP address, the Double NAT error goes away but = no internet.  In this mode I can't join my own network and I get a "your computer is using an IP address that's already in use" error, though everything but my laptop is off.
    What I'm willing to try anything but I need very specific, step-by-step (noob) instructions. Many thanks.

    I have to admit when I see Motorola modem I automatically think cable modem.. but yours is adsl.. so when you bridge the modem you have to use pppoe client in the TC.. not dhcp as you would with cable. Is that how you are trying it.
    I looked it up and there is a thread almost identical. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3808550?start=0&tstart=0
    Bob.. gives instructions with pic in the thread on how to setup pppoe in the TC. This should work, although we have noticed some issues of late with the client not always handling IP correctly.
    I am not sure why it fails when you bridge the TC.. that IMO should work without too much hassle.
    I would download 5.6 utility
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
    It just does a lot more things than v6 in Lion.
    Go to manual setup in 5.6 utility.
    Go to internet tab
    Go to connection sharing.
    Set to Off bridge mode.
    Update the TC.
    Then reboot everything..
    start in sequence.
    1. Modem.. wait a couple of min.
    2. TC .. wait again..
    3. Clients.
    What you have previously done may well be correct but not renewing IP addresses properly has messed up the connection to the modem.

  • Help with Time Capsule/wireless network setup

    Just purchased Time Capsule, hooked it up, and followed the instructions to create a new wireless network. The problem is that my MacBook Pro can't find the internet via the new Time Capsule network. It can "see" the Time Capsule, and I can log on with the new password, but there is no internet connectivity. If I unhook the ethernet cable from the Time Capsule and hook it directly into the computer, the computer is able to rapidly access the internet. Plug the ethernet back into the Time Capsule, and even though the Time Capsule light is green, there is no internet connectivity for that computer or other computers. Also, the Time Capsule signal strength is exceedingly low. Help!

    Please try the steps again. However, this time, I would like for you to perform a modem reset between powering all the equipment down and starting to power them back up again.
    You should find a reset button on the back of your Motorola modem.
    So, the steps should now be:
    o Power-down all of the equipment, except the modem.
    o Perform the modem reset. Note, the reset may take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to complete. Check your User's Guide that came with the modem. If you don't have a copy of the guide, you can get it here: SB5101 User Guide
    o Once the reset is complete, power-up the TC by following the sequence I provided earlier.

  • Help with Time Capsule with a new modem

    Hi,
    I did a search and couldn't find what I'm looking for.  What is the  easiest way to setup my Time capsule with a new modem?  I will be using  wifi with the time capsule.  I just got a new modem and the time capsule  keeps flashing a amber light.  It was working off wifi before I got the  new modem.
    Thanks, Jerry

    There is only one right value for wireless now. Which I did list in the instructions.
    WPA2-PSK (AES) for the arris.
    WPA2-Personal for the TC.
    Did you reboot everything when you disconnected the ethernet.. so the computer and TC can reallocate the IP addresses. This is important.
    Reboot everything when you rearrange networks.. always do it.. even I am forced to do it.
    Reboot in this order.. from off.. everything off.
    Modem.. wait 2min
    TC.. wait 2min
    Computer.. this will now pick up a new IP from the whichever wireless is stronger.. should not make any difference if it is the TC or the Arris.
    Now see if the TC is available in airport utility.
    If it fails .. reconnect it by ethernet to the computer.
    Give it a different wireless name .. ie the Arris and the TC will have different names.
    And you are using "create a wireless network" in the TC.. no other option will work.
    Update the TC so the setup is saved.
    Unplug the TC from the computer and plug it into the Arris..
    Now reboot everything.. sorry.. but it is the easiest way to clear up old settings and get everything going again.
    Now in the computer you will need to open the airport and find the TC wireless.. and then you connect to it.
    Once you connect direct to the TC you should have no trouble.
    You can setup and fix any issues.. there are always a few silly things.. password default or wan setup .. choose ignore or change settings.

  • Help with Time Capsule remote access

    I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro and a Time Capsule. I have registered with a MobileMe account and have specified the details of this in the Advanced section of AirPort utility. However, I don't know what else I need to do to enable me to access the Time Capsule remotely? The Time Capsule is set up on a bridge with my existing router and is performing backups, so I believe that this is working as it should. Any advice would be much appreciated as I'm new to Macs! Many thanks.

    Hello morph1977. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    I believe the issue is that you have the Time Capsule (TC) behind another router.
    I assume that you want to take advantage of BacktoMyMac (BTMM) to access the TC with your MobileMe account ... correct?
    If so, two things must be present in order for BTMM to be successful: 1) Routers on both ends of the connection must support either UPnP or NAT-PMP. Note: The AirPort and TC both support NAT-PMP, and 2) The router with the host device you are trying to reach must have a publicly reachable IP address.
    BTMM only works with either a public IP address or with automated port mapping via NAT-PMP or UPnP.
    Here's roughly how BTMM works:
    1. For a computer connected to the Internet via a router that assigns it a network address, BTMM asks the router for configuration information.
    2. BTMM sends this information to MobileMe: BTMM tells MobileMe where the computer is located and how to reach it on the network or via the Internet. This information is stored on the MobileMe’s servers.
    3. When connecting to a remote computer, your copy of BTMM creates a secure connection with the other computer, using the information about that computer’s
    location and configuration stored on MobileMe.
    Since the TC is behind another router and configured as a bridge, the only thing that needs to be configured on it is to identify the MobileMe account(s) that will access it using the AirPort Utility. The key would be to make sure that existing router has either NAT-PMP or UPnP enabled.

  • Help with time capsule!!! wireless connection to router!! HELP!

    Wondering if anyone know if the time capsule could connect wireless to my router? Got a PC on the second floor. Anyone know if I could connect through time capsule with cable to my PC and have the internet wireless with the time capsule?? Help please!! Thanks!

    The answer is no.. sorry.
    Apple made the TC and Extreme unable to do wireless bridge.. unless you have another Apple router that is creating the wireless connection. The Express is the one odd one out.. it can do it.
    You can buy a standard PC type wireless bridge fairly cheap but I would still be careful.. buy something that matches the main router and can use WDS.. try not to get onto the universal wireless repeater bridge bandwagon.. it is often not reliable.

  • I need help with Time Machine - Won't back up properly

    I'm new to Macs, my MBP is barely a month old, so bare with me.  I do understand computers pretty well and I've been trying like **** to read up and fix this on my own, but it's starting to tick me off.
    Okay so I got a "WD My Passport" external HD for Xmas and my goal is to have Time Machine back everything up on it.  The problem started after a backup was halfway through and froze.  I thought wiping the Passport clean and starting over would do the trick, but it was tricky figuring out how to erase "Backup In Progess Files"
    I read up on the "Disk Utility" stuff and partioned the Passport, which set it back to normal it seemed like.  So I tried the backup one more time, but again it froze a little less than half way through.
    So now "Disk Utility" won't even let me erase the Passport or Partition it - it tries for about 10 minutes and eventually says it can't "unmount".  Yet when I enter Time Machine it shows that some files have been backed up in "Star Wars Mode", but it seems like that's only saved to the MBP itself?
    Please correct me if I'm wrong with my logic, and any help is much appreciated.  I'll provide further input if it helps too, just let me know.

    Sounds like a bad Passport may be the culprit. If Disk Utility can't erase or properly mount the drive, it may have serious problems.
    I've used Passports for Time Machine with great success, but I've also had to replace 2 of them as they eventually went bad. Try another external hard drive and I'll bet it works.

  • Need help with Time Field

    Hi everyone,
    I'm new to LiveCycle Designer and so far I'm loving it! I have a question on the time field.
    I want the user to enter a time such as 8pm or 830pm and field to automatically display the time as 8:00 PM or 8:30 PM. I have not been able to achieve this.
    If I use anything in the validation area, then I am forcing the user to enter the time in that format (so 8pm fails). If I don't put anything in the validation area, the system doesn't change the time (and it remains displayed as 8pm).
    What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Jose

    I figured it out.
    Thanks!

  • Need help with Timer function

    I am using a timer class for my application such that when i log in, i immediately call the timer.start function from the Timer.java class.
    The problem i am having, is that when this timer expires, it calls an exit function, but i want it to restart the original application. i have tried to create an instance of the old session to kill its timer and a new instance that spawns a new start page, but this doesnt work well because i have both applications running and if i close either one of them, both get killed!!
    Can anyone help me out in this regard?
    Sule.
    public void timeout()
            System.err.println ("terminating");
            System.exit(1);
                         // instance.getContentPane().add(d2.new StartPage());
                         // instance.setVisible(true);
                         // previousInstance.timer.stop();
            }

    hey Uhrand.. thanks for your suggestions. I really appreciate them, however it doesnt completely solve my problem. As I stated before my Timer program runs in its own class file. so i have in one class file
    public class Timer extends thread {
    public static Application dl = new Application();
    public void timeout()
                          System.err.println ("Logging-Off");
            new Application();
            dl.timer.stop();
            }and then i have another class file for the main program like this...
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class Application {
        public Application() {
            app = new JFrame("'Application' restarts every 15 seconds");
            app.add(new JLabel("Please watch the Title of this frame"));
            app.setDefaultCloseOperation(WindowConstants.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            Dimension screenSize = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize();
            app.setBounds((screenSize.width-400)/2, (screenSize.height-150)/2, 400, 150);
            app.setVisible(true);
            (new Thread(new Timer(app))).start();
        public static void main(String args[]) {new Application();}
        private JFrame app;
        private JFrame app;
    }when the timer expires, i am not able to create a new Application without the old Application.
    I would appreciate it if you can respond.
    thanks
