Need info re Smart Playlists

I am using iTunes 6.0.1.3 on a PC with XP pro & need help with a smart play list.
I want to set up a smart play list so that when I add or delete songs from a given folder on my HD iTunes automatically updates the smart play list.
The folder in question is called General Music.
So how would I have iTunes see the contents of the folder "General Music" located on my HD & automatically update as I add or delete songs.
Richard Tidd

as far as i know... nope, not possible.

  • Stolen laptop, now need to recover smart playlists... how?

My Powerbook was stolen. I've received a replacement, and used Senuti to recover the music back onto my laptop. However, I spent a ton of time creating smart playlists, and really don't want to do it all over again. Senuti allows me to copy the smart playlists, but they lose their 'intelligence' and become regular playlists. Is there anything out there that will transfer and preserve the smart playlists? Thanks - and I hope Apple doesn't remove this posting, this is legit, shoot me an email and I'll send you the police report.

If you're copying tracks back from your iPod, the iPod knows nothing about Smart Playlists, since these are handled in iTunes, which is why Senuti copies them back as ordinary Playlists.
Unless you've got a backup of your iTunes Music Library.xml file you're out of luck. It's this .xml file that holds the definitions of the Smart Playlists.

  • Need help with smart playlists

    Hi all,
I have created a smart playlist in iTunes called 'not rated yet'. The settings are:
    My rating = 0 stars +
    podcast = no
In iTunes everything works fine. When a not rated song gets at least one star it disapears from the playlist. My iPod in contrast does not update the playlist as long as podcast = no is part of the playlist settings. When I remove podcast = no then the mini works again.
So I wonder if this is a bug? Does anybody have an idea?
By the way, I am using the latest iPod-updater software which is 1.4.1.
Windows XP   iPod mini 2nd gen.

Thanks for looking into that. The way you described it, is the usual behaviour of smart playlists on the iPod. But the point is that Live Updating is selected and it will not update, even after re-entering the playlist. iTunes does it, as soon as you rate an item it will disappear. As described above it works on the mini, but only when I remove the podcast option.

  • Need help with smart playlist

I want to create an auto-fill function for my new 16 GB nano that is the same as my old Shuffle had, as I have much more music on my computer than my nano can hold. I don't want to rate the songs with stars or when last played. I simply want a new selection each time I sync. I was thinking of making a playlist with the rule "Playlist is music" and then limiting it by size to my nano and selected by random. But will I get a new sync each time? Or will that smart playlist never change? How do I do this?
Also, what does the live updating function do? Thanks.

To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "14800" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.

  • Need info regarding smart lists

    Hi ,
Can anyone give me some idea in layman terms where we need smartlists exactlyand why we need those. When you deploy workforce or capex they will come up with smartlists. Are they like substitution variables or else they are like UDA'S.
    Thanks for your kind info

    Hi,
You have already asked this exact question in the past and received an answer for it.

  • Some smart playlists not working correctly

I have a smart playlist, "100 Most Played" that contains, as you might infer, the 100 most played songs (according to play count). On the iPhone, this seems to come out as 100 random songs because it does not correspond to the playlist as it appears in iTunes.
    iPhone 8GB

agreed. i'm having the same problem, and am also surprised by it.
    DOESN'T WORK:
"Top 25" - should be easy. all the songs that the iPhone needs for this smart playlist are, yes, synced to the iPhone. but it picks a set of songs that have nothing in common as far as i can see (they have different ratings and add dates and so on).
    WORK CORRECTLY:
"80s/Good" - an alphabetical list of songs with the genre "80s". this works and appears in the right order.
"New" - shows new additions to iTunes, sorted by date added. works correctly.
    WEIRDEST:
"Forgotten/Best" - is a playlist for showing 5-star songs not played recently. has always worked on iTunes. oddly, on the iPhone, the song list is actually the song list for the "Top 25" ?!?!!? i mean, it -is- the Top 25 playlist, but with the wrong name somehow. it's very confusing.
waiting for a software update =)

  • I need a COMPLETE tutorial on how to make a smart playlist with 'conditions'

Ok, I have read discussions in the Support Communities, looked on iTunes Help and I think my brain is going to explode. I need a simple (for dummies) tutorial on how to create a smart playlist with 'conditions' and Live Updating. For example: instead of going through my Library music list and unchecking all my Christmas music and all my Comedy stuff so it won't play year round and at innapropriate times and having to skip them manually when playing on my ipod touch or my iphone4 in my car or through headphones or home sharing and using my AppleTV.
Also, if my comedy is individually all unchecked (in my iTunes Library), and I have a regular playlist in my ipod and one in my iphone (titled Comedy), when I go to the playlist list in my ipod or phone (when not connected to my Mac), and select shuffle: will that playlist play all the way through even though they are all unchecked?
AND, if I have 'sync only checked songs and video' box UNCHECKED in my summary page for a device what exactly does that do? Or more precisely, WHY would I want or not want that box to be checked?
I really hope someone can help me as I am a complete idiot when it comes to understanding long explanations.

If the box is unchecked, it won't do anything. It will sync everything.
If it is checked, songs that are unchecked will nto get sync'd to the iPod.

Select all the Christmas stuff, right click - get info.
Set the sure the Genre is Christmas.
Go to the Info tab and set Skip when Shuffling to Yes.
    Do the same for Comedy.
Create a new smart playlist (named My Music or something similar).
    Match all rules;
    Genre is not Christmas.
    Genre is not Comedy.
Play this playlist on the iPod/iTunes to listen to everything except Christmas & Comedy.
Or if you have Shuffle turned on, just listen to anything and Christmas & Comedy will get skipped.
    It depends.
In iTunes, unchecked items will get skipped.
If unchecekd items get sync'd to the iPod (you do NOT have Sync only cheked items ticked), they will play unless you have them set to Skip when shuffling.

  • New Smart Playlist / Genre = / Genre does not display in Info list

I'd greatly appreciate help.. spent many hours looking for answer already.
I have created several Smart Playlists in the past. They work fine. They are all classified by Genre.
Now I have created a new Smart Playlist. It all looks fine with the Genre set correctly.
However in Music, when I try to set the Info of a recording to that Genre, the Genre does NOT appear in the Info list.
All previously created Genres are there, but the Genre for the new Smart Playlist is never there.
I have tried over and over and over again. I have deleted the new Smart Playlist, re-created it, created another Smart Playlist, with anonther name ... exited iTunes and re-started it several times ... rebooted the computer ...
Whatever I do, the Genre of the new Smart Playlist does not appear in the Info list.
Any ideas at all? Is there a limit to the number of Genres? I must say I'd love to get rid of a large number of the pre-existing Genres like 'Industrial', Hip Hop/Rap, whatever, that will definitely never be used!
    Many thanks

    Camoracer,
...If the genre is not listed in the drop down then type > it in yourself when editing track info.
Thank you VERY much. I am not a very regular user of iTunes and had forgotten that the first time a new Genre is created, you have to physically type in the name in the Info field .. even though there is a new Smart Playlist with that Genre already defined!
Ah well... one of these days when I get some time I'll have to write up an aide memoire for using iTunes! In the meantime I'll not forget this one! Thanks again, I appreciate your time.

  • ITunes 10.5 Ratings fields broken in smart playlists and in Get Info - Options tab

Installed 10.5 on Win XP and just discovered the Ratings fields are broken in both the Smart Playlist properties box and on the Options tab of the "Get Info" window.  By "broken" I mean -- just blank, can't be edited.  I can see and change the star ratings directly in the track list and by the right-click menu, but when I try to make edits the Info popup the field is blank (even if the track already has a rating) and can't be edited.  Same behavior on Smart Playlists, on both new smart playlists as well as smart playlists I created before the upgrade.  See screen shots...

Well, I guess "never mind"... the problem went away "on its own" - I suppose a reboot fixed it, but who knows.

  • Need to Create a Live Update Smart Playlist That Shuts Off After a While

    Hi All--
I'm trying to create a smart playlist with the following properties:
    1) Every time I play it, it selects a different random set of songs.
    2) The playlist plays for a fixed duration, then shuts off.  (I like to go to sleep to music, but it wakes me up in the middle of the night if it plays for too long.)
The best I've been able to come up with is to set "not played in the last xx days", "Limit to yy minutes selected by random", and "live updating".  However, there's a problem with this:  as soon as one song has played, it's purged from the list, which causes live updating to replace it with a new song.  As a result, this creates a list that plays forever, since new songs are continuously added to replace the ones that have been played.
I tried turning off live updating, but then I'm stuck with the same songs over and over.  I also know about the trick of just using "select random" and deleting the contents of the list, so that live update will repopulate it, but that won't work on an iPod without doing it in iTunes and then re-syncing.
    Any ideas?

OK, I think I finally found a way to do this, sorta.  This will work on any iPod or iPhone that supports live update and allows the creation of ad-hoc playlists, either named or on-the-go:
    1) Create the list as described above.
    2) Sync to iPod or iPhone
3a) On a non-touch iPod, highlight the playlist and hold down the select button until you get the menu with "add to on-the-go" in it, and select that.
3b) On an iPod touch or iPhone, create a new playlist, then select the dynamic list and "add all songs" to it.
The playlist you created isn't dynamic, so you'll just play through it once and stop.  Deleting the contents from the temporary list and doing step 3a/b over will get you a new set of songs.  The dynamic list will purge the songs and update with new ones as you play them from the static list.
It's not perfect, but it's reasonably fast to get a time-bounded selection of music that refreshes each time you want to play the list.

  • Smart Playlists. Need Help Please.

Hello. Sorry, I am new to forums and kinda new to iTunes too, got my first iPod only few months ago(nano 3g), but here is my question:
I want to make smart playlists consisting of my:
    Daily Top10
    Weeks Top10
    Months Top10
    Years Top10
I want them also sorted in order of popularity. Music only. No videos or anything like that.
I have tried different methods but failed. They just keep coming up in the order of last played, not how popular. Can you help me, and if you can, can you say it in steps.
    Thanks!

Okay, so you're creating some smart playlists . If by popularity you mean the number of times the song's been played, then to create a playlist for your Daily Top 10:
Have the playlist Match all of the following rules: Last played is in the last 1 days and Kind contains audio file.
And then select (check) the next line and set the limit you desire selected by most often played.
(If by popularity you mean the ratings you've assigned the songs, you would select by highest rating.)
For the Week's, Month's and Year's Top 10 you'd change the Last Played part of the rule.

  • Need help creating a smart playlist with multiple rules

I'd like to make a smart playlist that:
has the word 'Anime' in its Name, or Album title
has the word 'Cover' in its Album title
does not have the word 'OST' in its Album title
    Thanks in advance!

Create a new smart playlist, click the + symbol, then the second ellipsis ... then the last + symbol. This will give you the rule structure as shown below, edit the parts accordingly.

  • Smart playlists not updating live after 3.1.1 upgrade

Same discussion started back in February about the 3.0 update (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9937797)
I thought for sure live updating would work properly with such an update from 3.0 -> 3.1.1, but no luck! I guess it takes more than 7 months to fix this.
As a refresher -- if you have a smart playlist that includes a "not played in the last xx days" condition, the old OS (2.2.1) would automatically remove a played song from the smart playlist on the iPod so your playlist is always valid. However, in 3.0 and 3.1.1, the iPod does not automatically recalculate the smart playlist and you have to sync with iTunes to get the song to be removed.

I have discovered a workaround for this issue. As with most workarounds, it's not too pretty, but it gets you there.
Knowing that live updating smart playlists that refer to other playlists won't properly update on the iPod, and taking advantage of the fact that iTunes 9 now allows for nested logic in smart playlists, we can make a complex nested logic smart playlist that live updates on the iPod as long as it doesn't refer to another playlist. In place of referring to another playlist, refer to some metadata instead. The cleanest metadata tag in my opinion is "Category." It is metadata that does not by default display in playlist view (you can enable it under the View menu), and is not visible when selecting Get Info on a track. You can use the excellent "Enter Category Text for Selected v1.1" script to enter Category tags, available at http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=entercategorytext . Just enter the name of the playlist the track is contained in for the Category tag.
I'll give an example of how this works. Let's say you have a long playlist named "day" containing certain tracks you like to listen to when the sun is out. You want to create an intelligent and self-updating megamix playlist of tracks only from the "day" playlist that will play songs you haven't heard, as well as songs you've heard and have rated. As an added smartness, you want to hear the tracks you've rated higher more often than the tracks with a lower rating. You want this new "day mix" playlist to live update properly on your iPod touch.
First you'll need to tag all your "day" playlist songs. Download and install the "Enter Category Text for Selected v1.1" script mentioned above. Select all the songs in the "day" playlist, run the script, and enter "day" for the Category.
Now you can make the smart playlist. In iTunes 9, create a new Smart Playlist. Using the new nested logic in iTunes 9 smart playlists, select the following conditions:
) Match any of the following rules:
) all of the following rules:
    ) Category contains day
    ) Playcount is 0
) all of the following rules:
    ) Category contains day
    ) Rating is *
) Last Played is not in the last 6 months
) all of the following rules:
    ) Category contains day
    ) Rating is **
) Last Played is not in the last 5 months
) all of the following rules:
    ) Category contains day
    ) Rating is *
) Last Played is not in the last 4 months
) all of the following rules:
    ) Category contains day
    ) Rating is **
) Last Played is not in the last 3 months
) all of the following rules:
    ) Category contains day
    ) Rating is ***
) Last Played is not in the last 2 months
    ) Live updating
You should find that the new "day mix" smart playlist properly live updates on your iPod touch.
As with any workaround, there are troubling aspects. One is that you'll need to constantly update your metadata tag of choice (Category, in my example) each time you add new tracks to a source regular playlist on your iPod. I'm also unsure about overloading the metadata with a number of tags in the case where tracks co-exist on multiple playlists. Also be aware that smart playlists like this tend to hang the iPod for several minutes with the "Updating Library" screen, so be prepared to be patient.
I hope this is of use to someone. Please post any streamlining suggestions for this workaround.

  • ITunes Match/Smart Playlists/Holiday Music

Prior to iTunes Match, I use to use a "Smart Playlist" for my Holiday songs.  I would check them all and sync my iPhone to add them and, afte the Holildays, I would uncheck all the songs and re-sync my iPhone.  So, I only need to hear the songs during the time I want them.  I signed up for iTunes March and can't figure out a way to load the songs for the Holidays or -- more importantly -- unload the songs now that the Holidays are over.  (I am officially sick of hearing the songs.)  The song list is about 250 songs.     Is there way to replicate this "seasonality" that I use to be able to accomplish with my Smart Playlist in iTunes Match?

UPDATE: so i was looking through some more, and here's another issue: I bought James Blunts album many many years ago. If I look at the "matched" playlist it shows "Goodbye My Lover" which is track 4/11, the remaining 10 tracks are in the "purchased" playlist. Checking the info on "Goodbye My Lover" show that it is "Purchased AAC audio file"
I've also bought the AC/DC box set from iTunes, and some of those tracks are showing in the "uploaded" playlist!
In "View Options" i enabled iCloud status and it's just all over the place!  Music i've purchased (and subsequently added to iTunes from apple support allowing me to redownload purchases) are shown as "Uploaded" or "Matched", some songs from albums (imported) are matched and others uploaded. Parts of box sets are "uploaded", others are "matched" and others "purchased"...
what the?! I'm just confused! I'd like to use the option to upgrade my songs to the best quality (for my CD imports) and thought these playlists would help (actually a single button - "Upgrade" would be nice!) but they don't appear to be too accurate

  • Smart playlist sort by "where"

I am a PowerBook user who has limited hard drive space. Thus, most of my music is on an external hard drive at home, and a select few albums are stored on my PowerBook for emergency music needs.
I would keep more on my laptop if I could create a smart playlist that used the "Where" portion of the Get Info on a song. That way, I could shuffle just the music I have with me.

I see that option on smart playlists in itunes, but I don't have that option for smartplaylists on my touch.
