*Need* to install 10.4 on an iBook G4 with 10.4.11

Hi all,
I emphasize need because my boss brought in his daughter's iBook G4 and wants me to re-install the OS. Why, you may ask? The guy, in his infinite wisdom decided to half-assedly install a parenting control software and now the girl cannot get online. Of course, he doesnt remember any of the passwords or login info. Figures.
I already backed up all of the girl's info (he wanted me to delete it all, but the girl is not at fault here) and rebooted with the OS disc (10.4) while holding "C". Everything went fine until I got a message telling me the OS cannot be installed on the G4 (its currently running 10.4.11). I seem to remember there was a way to re-install just the OS (even if it was using a previous version) and leaving the rest of the files alone.
Help! This guy is like a moody teenager and wants this thing fixed by the end of the day. I hate to be "tech support" in situations like this... ¬¬

Perhaps, since he is 'the owner' he can call Apple Sales and
see about getting a replacement disc set for that specific iBook
+based on the serial number and model,+ and pay the fee for a
replacement on his company credit card, and ask about fast
expedited shipping. Unless he wants you to do this & also pay.
That could work. So long as the correct discs for the computer
are available for whoever is expected to do the work; and later
on when routine and preventative maintenance is to be done,
the daughter who uses the computer some of the time should
maybe be the one writing into forums for hints & tips on care.
The computer will need the discs for the processes involved
to work. And if he (the owner) does not want the responsibility
then the computer should go into the shop. They could wipe
the drive, test the computer, and install a bare-bones 10.5.x
Leopard on it. And it would still have no discs! (+No old accts.)
Getting a new install-restore disc set is fine, but if they are put
where the other set was misplaced, then it does not matter a lot.
A full retail Leopard 10.5 install disc won't have iLife or the apps
that came with the iBook, nor will there be an Apple Hardware Test.
And the 10.5 system is a bit different in how it works. You'd be on
call all the time once you start in on Leopard and upgrading it.
I wonder if there is a way to get into the computer, perhaps in a
single-user mode, and start the computer up without the secure
locks; and maybe then get it going without a boot-install DVD,
and then use an Uninstaller such as AppCleaner to find and
remove all the parts of that kid-proof security software...
http://www.freemacsoft.net/AppCleaner/index.php
You may have to see about contacting the company whose product
put the secure kid-proof locks on that iBook, and ask if they have a
way to disable and remove the item without an installer CD or if
there is a downloadable file you can put on a USB Flash and then
maybe start the computer up in SafeBoot, and run an uninstaller to
get rid of the software the owner put in, irresponsible to the outcome.
+Seems silly to have an irresponsible product owner foist off+
+on someone else the actions an adult person or wise child+
+could do. Makes me wonder who makes the other decisions.+
Anyway, between the links I posted, you can identify the exact
computer (info is on/in the computer) and if not, a trained tech
in an authorized Apple environment can certainly do the work.
PS: You may still be able to use that incorrect 10.4 installer
in the booted up mode, to see if you can change the Admin
password. Reset the Password and then see if you can re-
start the computer from its hard disk drive normally; maybe
then see if it will boot into SafeBoot mode (shift key held on
startup, login on prompt, continue at desktop Finder.)
If so, you may be able to at least use AppCleaner and try to
get the application keeping a lock on the internet, off the iBook.
If you can, then remove items to the trash. Restart the iBook
at some point after messing around in SafeBoot. You can use
Disk Utility to repair disk permissions from the iBook's OS, &
then restart, once (or if) the offending items can be removed.
There may be different or better angles on some of these ideas.
I'd suggest looking into another line of work...

  • I need to install the HP drivers on a laptop with a broken screen in order to get VGA port to work.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
Hewlett Packard Model: 2000 2a20ca Notebook
Oh my god please give me some insight here, it is so hard to find the right answers and I refuse to lose to this technical box that's driving me nuts! So here's the run down:
My screen broke on laptop...fine. It was connected via HDMI to TV and working fine. Until one day it decided to not turn on. I think due to Windows updates and hubby had no patience so kept restarting
I tried to reload Windows on it, not thinking about the drivers, and I'm pretty sure I managed to reload Windows. Now I need the drivers to install chipset, networking etc. (which I have a disc for)
The problem is I cannot see the screen in order to click "install", I can't see the BIOS or the boot sequence. Ugh! And even if I could, the drivers are not installed to use the CD ROM or VGA port.
I can HEAR Windows start up and turn on! Doo-DO-Doo-DO lol the darn thing is working!
The monitor works in my other laptop.
Would/Should the VGA monitor work if I could get it to start in safe mode?
I've heard of a program that can streamline the driver's into a Windows installation disc so everything is installed altogether but how can I reinstall Windows if the drivers aren't loaded for the CD ROM?
Is there a way to get the necessary drivers installed? or is this notebook now garbage?

    Seriously?
    1.  The model number is the first thing at the top aside from the OS.
    2.  In my explanation it states:  "I have the drivers on a disk"
    Thanks for all your help!
Getting the drivers is not the problem.  Getting the drivers installed on a laptop with a broken screen...is the problem.
Ok, well sometimes you can't use external monitor to see what is happening in some laptops and the only real way to fix this is to fix the broken screen so you can reformat and resinstall the system again. Those are you only options at this point in time.

  • What drivers do I need to install for my MG6360 printer to work with a Mac with OSX10.8.5?

I have a PIXMA MG6360 printer that needs its software updating to return its full features but the Canon support line in Australia has prescribed several different options with no two alike and none providing the full features I once enjoyed.  'Phone and email support responses are all uniformly poor and I cannot get a straight story from any of the technicians I've encountered so far.  Currently, they've stopped responding altogether!
I know where to download the latest software, but I'm not clear about which packages I should install and in what sequence and I cannot locate a definitive answer in the knowledge base.
Can someone tell me which drivers etc I need and the sequence in which I should load them.
I'm assuming that I have to uninstall the existing software and printer from the Mac (MacBook Pro 15", Late 2012 with OSX 10.8.5) first.  That's about the only thing the techs agree on so far!
Also, does Canon update its software periodically and provide either automatic downloads or email warnings to update its users?
    All help gratefully recieved.

With reference to this article from Apple that lists the models of printer drivers available from Apple for Lion and Snow Leopard, there are a couple of HP Photosmart 55xx printer drivers in the list. So if all was well with your  iMac then the driver should be downloaded and installed when you connect to the printer. With this not happening you can try installing this HP Driver update. It contains all the HP models in that driver list - that's why its over 500MB - and it may be just what you need to get this printer connected.

Most logitech webcams only work with windows and need the software to run.
They need the software to run, all right, but many do work with Macs.
    http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20730/~/logitech-web cam-software-v2.x-for-mac-release-notes
But whether it will work with an older PowerPC-based Mac depends on which model the webcam is. Newer ones require a newer Mac.
Unless you have a newer Mac mini, you're not likely to need a webcam because newer Macs (MacBooks and iMacs) have built-in webcams.

  • Need assistance installing MindStorm NXT module on my desktop with Win XP and also my laptop which runs Win 7, software does not want to install?

I need assistance to install LabView MindStorm NXT module in a Desktop system with Win XP and a Laptop with Win7. Both are 32 bit with all service packs applied. I purchased the academic version from a company called On-The-Hub.
Attempted to install but seems to reject my serial number?

    Hi Rob,
Thats really strange because the NXT Module 2010 and the NXT Module 2011 are free and don't require serial numbers. Where did you obtain the installer? The core LabVIEW installer requires a serial number but if you already have that installed, the NXT Module is just a free addon. Here are the links to the module for LabVIEW 2010 & 2011

I think you would have better luck with an external DVD player/recorder. Have you tried dragging the file from the external hard drive to your desktop and then installing?

  • How to install JDK on LINUX Ubuntu on system with no net/wireless?

    Hello!
I need to install JDK on LINUX Ubuntu on system with no net/wireless connection.
    What are the commands?
    Thank you!
    Edited by: 800512 on 07:29 10/01/2011

    - Download your release of choice from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
    - Put the file on a USB thumb drive
    - Mount that drive on the target machine
    - Follow the installation instructions.
The Linux/Ubuntu downloads of the JDK are offline installers (i.e. the downloaded file contains everything that's required). Only Windows currently has an online installer (smaller initial download, but requires a net connection for the actual installation)
Alternatively: install the OpenJDK from the official Ubuntu packages using apt-zip (http://wiki.debian.org/AptZip).

  • I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. After a few weeks the HDD failed. New Leopard install reports: "insufficient memory". I need Tiger install disks so I can install

I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.
After a few weeks the HDD failed. I bought a new disk, installed it and trued to install Leopard, but the  install fails reporting "insufficient memory".
I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
You need much more RAM than that.

  • IPad iBooks is installed, but says I need to install iBooks to download a sample or purchase book

I have been using iBooks on my original ipad since it came out.  Now, when I go to the store in iBooks and try to download a sample in iBooks or purchase a book, it tells me I need to install iBooks!  This just happened in the last few weeks (since about early to mid-June 2011).  I have tried deleting iBooks and reinstalling, and still get the same error.  iBooks still seems to work normally on my iphone4.  What else can I try, short of resetting the iPad to factory settings?

Scanning this forum, it seems that at least a dozen people have experience this problem.  I am one of them.
I tried all the usual approaches to fix this: re-installing iBooks, cold reset of the iPad, resetting and restoring the iPad (very time-consuming) and none of this works.
Here is what you need to try: figure out when the problem first starting happening to you, and then delete any App you have installed since before the problem first appeared.  I had the problem start about 4 days ago, so I deleted all the apps I had installed in the past week.  THAT FIXED THE PROBLEM!
Then I started re-installing the Apps, one by one, until the problem came back.  In my case, it was just one App, the mere installation of which causes the problem with iBooks on my iPad.  The App in this instance is called OnSong, and I downloaded it on May 15 when it was temporarily free at the App store and had just been released with bug fixes.
My opinion is that the problem is not unique to OnSong. There are probably other Apps that can trigger this bug in the iOS.  But I think the strategy of removing Apps that were installed at about the time the problem with iBooks sample downloads occurred, is a good approach for anyone with this issue to pursue.

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • What size screw driver do i need to install RAM?

I need to install 512 more mb of ram for my ibook and the compartment under the keyboard is teeny-tiny. Since i'm going to the home depot, what size screwdriver do i need to unscrew the compartment to get to the ram

I bought what was called a electronics technicians screwdriver set.
It is basically a small hollow handle that included 8 bits-one of which was a tiny phillips head perfect for the iBook. Cost me about $8.

You have to follow the instructions on this page when creating a new account : Create an iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store account without a credit card or other payment method - Apple Suppor…
If you don't then credit card details will need to be entered before the account can be used to download any item from the store.
If you are being prompted to review the account when logging into it then you could see if this post by mountaingoatgirl lets you do so without needing to enter credit card details : https://discussions.apple.com/message/24303054#24303054
If not then you will either have to enter credit card details (you can remove the card after entering it), or create a new account (and this time follow the instructions on the above link)
