Need to move photos to external hard drive but can't find them in library

When we bought our Mac in 2005, we moved all of our photos from our PC onto the Mac, so I had pictures dating back to 2003. All of the photos we've taken since 2005 have been imported through iPhoto and show up in the library when we open iPhoto. However, through the library, I can't see any photos prior to 2005. I know they're on the system somewhere, because our screen saver is a slide show, and photos pre-2005 show up.
My question is twofold:
1) Where do I find those pre-2005 photos?
2) I am out of space on my hard drive and want to move the majority of our photos to the external hard drive, but would like to keep a year's worth of photos on the hard drive. How do I move most of them to the external drive but keep some on my hard drive?
Thanks for any help!

Were these pre 05 pictures imported to iPhoto too?
If so then your database may be damaged:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
2) I am out of space on my hard drive and want to move the majority of our photos to the external hard drive, but would like to keep a year's worth of photos on the hard drive. How do I move most of them to the external drive but keep some on my hard drive?
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk. Make sure the disk is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Now you have two full libraries.
3. On your internal, delete the pics you don't want from iPhoto there.
Now you have a full Library on the External and a smaller subset on the internal.
4. To choose between Libraries: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager

  • Tried to move itunes to external hard drive, now can't find my library...any others have this problem?

I read instructions to copy over my iTunes library and link it through....edit/preferences/advanced by changing the location and this did not happen.  All my songs did not get pulled into iTunes when I opened it back up again... it was empty.  I tried to change it back and forth with no luck.  I read more about it and moved the iTunes Media and other folders to new locations,,,still no luck.  I even moved all the folders back to original location and could not establish the link from the advanced section.  Any one know how to repair this issue and re-establish my library to iTunes again?  Thanks

If the "new PC" is not an Apple, then your Apple Apps will not be compatible with the PC.  So you are NOT able to transfer them.
    Hope this helps

Yes. Find the LR catalog file by looking in Edit/Catalog Settings/General. Close LR and navigate to that spot. The catalog file is the one that ends in .lrcat - move it to wherever you want. Next to the .lrcat file is a subfolder called Previews.lrdata. You can move that over as well, but if you don't LR will generate new previews. Double-click on the .lrcat file in its new home and LR will open with that catalog. Set Preferences to When Starting Up Use Most Recent Catalog.

  • Can't open video files when transferred to external hard drive, but can preview them?

I'm trying to clean up the disk space on my Mac because I have too many HD files.  However, when I copied them onto my external hard drive, and tried to open them there, I can't.  However, I can "preview" the files.  Is it safe to erase my hard disk?  Or has something gone wrong?
    Thanks.

iMovie will only recognize drives that are formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled), not FAT32. This is because of an architectural limitation of FAT32 which does not allow files sizes of 4GB or larger. Video can quickly reach this size.
You can either get a new drive and format it, or you can reformat your current drive. If you reformat your current drive, it will erase all data that is currently on it. Shout out if you need detailed instructions for the reformatting.

  • Want to move photos to external hard drive

    Here is my situation.
I have used iPhoto before abd gave more than one iphoto library on my hard drive. I want to move all of my pictures onto an external drive so I have them all in one place. I then want to delete all the photos on my hard drive so I can free up space.
How can I do this? How cam I get all pictures on iMac and another connected external drive to this new external drive which is empty of any files right now. After which I want to delete all the photos on mac PC in order to free up space.
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.

you can move your library to the external drive - Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
Once you have done this all photos you import will go to the iPhoto library on the EHD so any photos that are not in an iPhoto library are simply imported to iPhoto
If you have photos in multiple iPhoto libraries then iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - is the best and easiest solution for merging libraries and moving photos between libraries

  • My iPhoto library lives on an external hard drive. iTunes can't find the library, so I can't sync photos to my iPhone. Why?

    Like I said. . .
I recently migrated from an old MacBook to a new MacBook Air. I decided that since I have many tens of thousands of photos, I would keep them all on an external hard drive in the dedicated "iPhoto Library" (which I was very careful to migrate intact then move to the EHD). Now, when I go to the "Photos" tab in iTunes, all I get is a thinking wheel and no interface with which to choose which photos I want to sync to my iPhone (5s).
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly welcome.
    Thanks!

  • 2 Macs sharing an external hard drive, but can't see each other's music

We bought a 300GB Lacie external hard drive, and pointed each Mac's iTunes to the same folder on that drive. Then the computer asked to "consolidate," which means copying all the music on each to that shared folder--which is great so far. But then in iTunes one Mac can only see the music it copied to that folder, and the other can only see the music it copied over. If I go into Finder, I can see both of our music, but in iTunes, no. There is some purchased iTunes music, but mostly just our own CDs.
What happened, and what can I do? Thanks!

Each computer (actually, each user account on each computer) has its own iTunes Library, which is a directory file. Moving computer A's music files to the new hard drive resulted in the Library file being updated to show the new location of the music that already was part of the Library. Moving computer B's files to that same location didn't affect computer A's iTunes Library file.
On each computer, you'll need to use the Add to Library command (or do the equivalent by dragging music folders from the Finder onto the Library icon in the Source panel of iTunes) to get all the music into your Libraries.
If the Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to Library preference is ON (under Advanced\General of iTunes Preferences), then when you add music to your library, those files will be copied to the location in iTunes Music Folder location, if they're not already there. You may want to check these settings to make sure you won't end up with extra copies of music files in locations you hadn't intended.

  • Moved iTunes to external hard drive, iTunes can't find location of music

I recently moved my iTunes and library to an external hard drive as my laptop was running too slowly.
Suddenly I can't play any music (only some podcasts) directly from my iTunes. Those selected in my iPod Selection folder will play on my iPod.
There is an exclamation mark icon in the column next to the name. I've looked in the library and all the songs are there in .m4a format.
Does anyone know what I can do??????
    Cheers
    Kate

Windows will change the letter of the external drive you moved your stuff to inadvertently. If you go into control panel, computer management and drives. you will see the drives listed. Try changing the drive letter back to the original drive letter when you moved the files, right click on the external drive and change it back to f: or g:, making sure to unplug any other usb sticks/memory sticks drives you might have used since the last time you moved your files to the external drive. Do this a couple of times if it happens again and xp will remember to reserve that drive name for you.

  • How do i move photos to external hard drive for use with iphoto 11

My hard drive is full.  I have a Lacie 3 TB external formatted for Mac Journaled.  I want to keep my photos and other iPhoto 11 media on the external.  Should I just move the iPhoto library to the external or some other way?  For iTunes, I moved the iTune media folder location and copied my existing iTunes media folder over and deleted the old after telling iTune to go to the external drive folder.
I don't want to point iPhoto to the new location every time I open it.  Any better way or just move the iPhoto library?

  • I have 2 external hard drives, but can not view photos from 1 hard drive in LR5 now. I used this hard drive in LR5 before, but now it does not show up. How do I get the hard drive to show up in LR5?

Any ideas on how to connect hard drive back into LR5?

    Hi:
Let's see if I can help you, help me.    Operating system is OS X, version 10.8.5.
The photos on hard drive (1) have never been removed from Lightroom (or have they?)They have not been removed from LR.
Could you explain why hard drive (1) stopped appearing in Lightroom, it must have been because you did something, otherwise the photos on hard drive (1) will still appear there.LR always worked great, until I had to upgrade my operating system to get LR5 to work.  Then it has been one problem after another.
So, once I ran into this problem and before we started to chat….I simply RE-imported all the photos from (1).  They came in fine, except none of their key words came along with them.  So my ability to find anything is "0".  It was bad enough to have to do the import all over, but the thought of having to re-tag 1000"s of images is overwhelming.
    Thanks for your patience.

  • Transferring photos to external hard drive

I'm trying to free up disk space on my MacBook Pro and move my photos from Pictures on my Samsung external hard drive but when I drag them on or copy to paste them it won't work.  I'm sure I've done it before but its not working.  Any ideas?

Dependeing on how much data is on that external drive and the size of the internal drive on your Mac you could Copy all the data from the external to the internal on the Mac and then format it in the Mac format.
More than likely since that external was used on a Windows PC it is formatted NTFS. Mac OS X can READ from that format buit it can not WRITE to it.
With the drive connected to your Mac open Disk Utility, it is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder, and select that external in the left hand column of Disk Utility. It will tell you how it is formatted. Or you can Right Click on the external in finder or if it shows on the desktop and select Get Info. A window will open and list the format.
I suspect it is formatted NTFS and although you might think you have copies files to it from your Mac you actually haven't. You've more than likely just copied files From it.
It is always best to have more than one external drive. So Yes buy another external.

  • My husband bought an imac for the first time.  We backed up our separate itunes libraries on external hard drive but when it was retrieved, the 2 libraries had merged and they only appear in my husbands area.  How do we split them back up again?

Really need some help here.  We got the guys at PC World to back up our old computer onto and external hard drive, but our libraries merged.  I've tried retrieving the whole thing from the external hard drive but can't seem to identify any files to retrieve.  If I could copy the whole thing into my area, we could both just erase the things from each others' libraries that we didn't want.  We are imac virgins, and need some advice!

if it's content purchased from the iTunes store we're talking about, the following script will help to tell the files apart:
    Track Down Purchases
This script will examine each track in a selection of tracks or a selected playlist to determine if it was purchased from the iTunes Store and then copies it to a discrete playlist named for the person who purchased it, eg: "Steve Ballmer's Purchased Music". Recognizes song, video, and audiobook purchases. Purchaser information is gleaned by examining the track's file, which, depending on file location and access speed, can take as long a second per track.
for content you added manually (i.e. CD rips), i don't know of any easy way once the libraries were merged.

  • I have a new mini mac and i want to use my existing external hard drive but it needs to be reformated how do i do this without loosing all my old photos?

i have a new mini mac and i want to use my existing external hard drive but it needs to be reformated how do i do this without loosing all my old photos?

    Formatting will erase the drive.
You need to copy the photo's to either your old computer, the Mac Mini or to a new external drive and then decide what to do with your existing external drive.
For example: You could use one External drive for Photo's and one external drive for Time Machine to backup both your Mac Mini and the Photo drive.
