Need to restart every time

Every time I start up my computer I encounter a frozen cursor (mostly in the upper left hand corner of the screen right after the desktop is loaded in, but sometimes it lets me go for about a minute before freezing) and then I restart and everything is fine. Is this indicative of a problem ... and can I fix it? (I've done Norton on all the drives). Thanks.

Hi, Dennis -
That could be caused by many things.
One of the possibiities is an item in the Startup Items folder (in System Folder) that is not behaving well. Try disabling everything in that folder that you do not absolutely need - this can be done via Extensions Manager, near the bottom of its listings.
It can also be cause by a bloated or damaged desktop file on one or more of the drives. Rebuilding those would be the solution if that is the case. To do that -
• The Apple way: Article #10182 - Rebuilding Desktop File and Icon Recovery
• The way I do it: Restart - immediately hold down the Shift key until you get the "Extensions Off" message; then release Shift and hold down the Command and Option keys until you get the splash screen asking if you want to rebuild the desktop; click yes (or okay). Once that's done, restart to turn your extensions back on.
It is possible there may be a soft extensions conflict of some kind. One way to test for that is to try using the Mac OS Base or Mac OS All set of extensions at boot - you can select either of those sets from the Selected Set pulldown menu in Extensions Manager, and the shut down to test.
Or, you can select that 'on the fly' at startup. To do that, when you start the machine immediately press the Spacebar, keep it held down - Extensions Manager should open just before extensions would normally start to load. At that time you can select one of those sets and continue the startup.
You mention having used Norton on the drives. Altough Norton once was a good program, it has presented problems with users of OS 9. In particular, it should not be used if the OS 9 version on its CD is older than the newest OS 9 version on one of the hard drives.
If by chance you have installed any of the Norton Utilities software items, try disabling all such to see if that results in a better startup.

Hi I just got my iPad 2 and updated it to ios7 . Here is my problem: my Chinese input doesn't work , I need to restart every time . Is it the problem of the iPad? Or iOS 7??

    Hi Eric Ferguson,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For troubleshooting on this, take a look at this article:
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Error 13, 14, 35 and 50 (or -50)
These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
    Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • I recently updated my MacBook Pro and now it says I need to restart every time I turn the computer on.  It is on a grey screen.

I have not used my MacBook Pro for a few months and when I started it up did all the microsoft and system updates.  Now it will not turn on and it goes to a grey page that state "You need to restart you computer. Hold down the Power button untilmitmturns off, then press the Power button again." I have done this several times and keep arriving at the same page.

OK, then there is little else to do other than to reinstall OS X.
Make sure you removed everything connected to the MBP including any USB devices.
If your Mac came with a System Install DVD, then insert it and hold the c key while starting your Mac. This will boot from the DVD instead of your internal disk.
If you find the grey screen reappears then it may not have restarted from the disc, so try again. You have to get past this step to do anything. If you can't, the problem may be a dirty or damaged DVD or an inoperative optical drive.
When it gets to the Mac OS C Utilities screen, select Disk Utility and repair your hard disk. Record any errors that it finds, since your problem may be due to a failed hard disk. If that is the case, the failure will probably arise again.
Then, reinstall OS X. Reinstalling is non-destructive to your user accounts or data.
If your Mac is running Lion, or Mountain Lion, you can boot OS X Recovery and perform all the above without a disc.
Read about OS X Recovery here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

Hey, I had the same problem.  This fixed the problem for me:
Click the magnifying glass next to the seach bar and turn off "search entire library".
I'm not sure what this does, but it still seems to search all of my library.

  • IPod restarts every time I click the center button

Every time I click the center button to go into the music folder, my iPod restarts, so I can't get into those files. It sometimes happens when going in to the extras folder as well. What do I do?!

Do you have any podcasts on your ipod?
My nano has a very strange problem with resetting too, whenever I transfer a podcast to the ipod, listen to them using the 'Podcasts' folder itunes makes in the ipod's music folder(not playlists, but in the root music menu, before playlists), then delete just the podcast itself instead of the whole podcast folder, then I try going back into the music menu on the ipod, it restarts every time.
Only fix I've been able to come up with is just creating a new playlist for just podcasts, and putting my podcasts in that playlist and deleting the 'Podcasts' folder that itunes creates everytime I transfer a podcast to the ipod.

  • Is there a fix yet for the no sound problem with lion on the iMac without having to restart every time I switch the computer on?

Is there a fix yet for the no sound problem with lion on the iMac without having to restart every time I switch the computer on?

Try booting in Safe Mode by holding the the shift key immediately after powering on your system. Safe boot mode will for a directory check of your startup volume, then load only the required kernal extensions (kext files), and deletes some cache files. Once the system boots into Safe Mode you can simply restart the system to see whether the issue has been resolved.
If you still have the issue try resetting the SMC by shutting down the system and disconnecting the power cord for ~15 seconds, then reconnecting the power cord. Next, reset the parameter RAM (PRAM) by holding down the option-option-P-R keys after powering ON the system. Wait until the iMac restarts twice, then let the system boot normally.

  • Why does my computer restart every time I plug in my ipod?

I got my ipod touch a few weeks ago, and for the last two weeks, every time I plug it in, my computer restarts. It continues to restart every time it reaches the XP loading bit (where the bars travel across the screen, I don't know the technical name). I put the computer into safe mode and it doesn't restart, but my ipod isnt recognised on itunes so I can't sync it.
Does anyone have this problem, or know how to fix it? Thanks in advance

I've got a first gen. Ipod touch and I had a problem with my computer and had to wipe my hard drive and reinstall windows! since then when I plug in my touch it restarts my computer.
I'm looking on the forum for a solution before I try anything but to me it looks like we have a similar problem.
The only things different on my system since the last time it worked properly are I updated/reinstalled itunes yesterday and I installed NORTON 360 about a week ago so I think it must have something to do with them!
what browser do you use? I'm using firefox.
If you find a solution can you post an update and I'll do the same, thanks.

Now that I have upgraded to iOS 7, how can I make it so that I don't need a password every time I use my iPad?

In v6 airport utility "Join a wireless network" is not available once the TC is setup.
You must reset to factory and try again using the selection options.. and it can fail or not come up.. This is an extremely poor way to setup a TC.. and you should NEVER EVER DO IT.. that is why apple removed it. Since you are joining wireless it makes no difference where the TC is located.. since it would become a dumb AP and turn off its ethernet ports.
Place it right next to your main modem router, plug in by ethernet, and select bridge mode and create a wireless network. Never use Join a wireless network..
However for completeness here is the method.
How do I setup my time capsule with wireless internet?
    Never ever do it.
If you need internet by wireless and backup to the TC.. then simply plug the TC directly into the Mac.
Run dual network.. Setup explained here.
Using Time Capsule hardwired to Mac for back-up only.

You might see if rebooting helps:
    Rebooting your iDevice
Hold down the Sleep (On-Off) and Home buttons together for about 10-15 seconds or until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears - then let go of the buttons. The iPad should begin to start up.

  • Firefox is not working after restart. Need to reinstall every time I am starting PC.

    Hello everyone,
I was happily using Firefox untill few days ago. Since then Firefox takes about five minutes to start (you cant see in taskbar or Application in task manager, just in Processes in task manager). When it finaly opens the first window it is not responding and there just blank window). It does the same in safe mode.
I tried to reinstall it several time, with deleting every Firefox related files on computer (following every relevant instruction from Support). I tried to backup my profile and start with new one after reinstall. Every time with same result: Firefox works perfectly after reinstall (even when I transfer files from old profile, every bookmark is right), but when I restart computer the problem is back.
I checked PC for malware and viruses by Avast, there should be now collision with other software since I did not install anything recently. I have cleaned registres, cache and cookies with CCleaner.
I am running 64-bit Windows 7 Lenovo E430, everything worked perfectly for half a year. Only problem I can relate to is a warning message about low free space on system drive, which occured at the same time problems with Firefox started (but it is now even true, I have 5 GB of free space on system drive).
I found other unresolved topics, one of them with same system configuration as mine.

Any suggestions before I desperately change to Firefox Portable?

Why not install and try Firefox portable, it may well be a good troubleshooting step. Try running it from an external memory stick.
    The threads you referred to
    * [/questions/956861] was closed but never solved
    *[/questions/958824] similar
    Some system information would help
*How much RAM is installed ?
*What is the total size of the Hard Disk Drive ?
*What is the current amount of free-space in GB ? and as a percentage ?
I try not to use Windows but certainly at one stage a rule of thumb was 20-25% free space should be available. Under about 12% defragging of a disk would likely fail. A page file would need to be larger than the amount of RAM maybe 1.5X , and a hibernate file would be the size of the RAM.
    * Do not Hibernate if you are low on HDD space.
I suggest you proceed as follows
#Answer the above questions. I worry you have a lack of diskspace.
#Do a full scan with multiple and up-to-date anti-malware tools. Do not rely on Avast alone. No tool picks up everything. Report back what you scanned with and what was found.
#Backup and keep whatever profiles may be good or may contain recent information such as passwords and bookmarks, but do not use them yet.
#Download a new installer then Do a clean reinstall of Firefox, ensuring that the program folders are deleted before you re-install.
#Now restart, you expect the first restart to work. Close down and try again does it now work OK ?
The detailed instructions in the thread you read [/questions/958824#answer-436552] should help you.
If you have continuing problems is this after a restart of Firefox, or a restart of the Windows Operating System ?

Every time I awake my computer from sleeping, Mail needs to be restarted.
    Why's that?
The problem is that if I'm not aware of i it, my Mail stays offline.
    Any help?
    Thanks

This is a bug that doesn't affect everyone. I can't reproduce it and I don't know what triggers it. The following steps have been reported (but not confirmed by me) to work around it in some cases:
    Turning off Dictation
    Turning off the built-in firewall
Turning off the Energy Saver setting to allow hard drives to spin down when idle
    Changing DNS servers
That's all I've been able to find out.

  • My Windows 2012 ISCSI Target service needs to be restarted every time the server starts.

Every time I restart my Windows 2012 server, the ISCSI Target Service is unavailable to the clients even though it appears to be running.
I have to restart the service, then the clients can connect to it.
I tried to change the startup Type to Delayed, but I get an error 87: parameter is incorrect.
I've tried to delete and recreate the VHD and ISCSI Target.
I've tried to uninstall the Role, and reinstall it.
Anybody have any additional ideas to try and troubleshoot this?
    Thank you

  • Firefox 3.6.13 Update will not update and install plugins or extensions. It will prompt for a restart every time, instally nothing. Is there a fix?

Plugins such as Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Silverlight will show as needing an update on Plugin Check (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/) but every time it downloads, installs, and restarts Firefox, the program is not updated.
This error also occurs when updating Addons. They'll be listed as updated awaiting a Firefox restart, but every Firefox restart does not fix the problem. If I go to uninstall an Addon, it'll say it's ready to uninstall pending restart, but after a restart it is still installed.

I had the same problem, until I did some research. I uninstalled firefox 3.6.13, and reinstalled firefox 3.6.12. When I did some research, I found that the quicktime plugin had been blocklisted. I disabled the quicktime plugin, updated to firefox 3.6.13, and the problem was gone. My add-on window doesn't freeze up anymore either.

  • Have to restart every time I starup - RAID or other set-up problem?

It's off topic - apologies - I've had no luck in the Mac Pro forum or general searching. I am posting here too as I wonder if it's to do with my FCP or RAID settings, or similar...
Every time I startup, the Mac Pro freezes straight away and I have to restart. When I do I get the RAID utility which gives an error message due to the 'disorderly shutdown'.
At one point I also got RAID errors as I wasn't letting the RAID card battery charge, but I have since worked that out. I have no RAID knowledge (it is not my mac, just the one I am working on) and don't fully understand how it effects this set up.
I have 1 system and 2 media drives, Internal 1TB. And according to the RAID utility - one RO-1 RAID Set.
I tried to post a screen grab of the RAID utility but can't seem to make that work.
I've tried Safe Booting, Repairing permissions, and no joy - always the double startup.
    Any pointers appreciated..
    Cheers
    Hugh
