Need to shut off ibook screen?

Hi all,
I need to know how to set my 12" G4 ibook screen to turn off while it is connected to an external monitor? I also have a 15" G4 powerbook that is connected to a different external display and I can turn it on and it uses the external monitor with the lid closed and screen off. I want to be able to do this with my ibook. It is a waste to have the ibook screen on all the time when it has an external monitor as a display. Oh, and it still has 10.3.9 on it. I'll put 10.4 on it eventually. I have 10.4 on my powerbook.

I need to know how to set my 12" G4 ibook screen to turn off while it is connected to an external monitor?
Sorry, but that is not possible with an iBook.
That is a feature of PowerBooks.

Are you trying to change the Apple ID associated with your iCloud account?  If so, go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, then sign back in with the new ID.  This deletes the account and your iCloud data from your device, but not from iCloud.  Provided you are signing back into the same account, your iCloud data will reappear on your device when you sign back in.
To avoid losing photo stream photos, save them to your camera roll (if not already there) before deleting the account.  To do this, open your my photo stream album, tap Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, then tap Save to Camera Roll.

  • Shutting off stupid screen dim feature?

Is there a way to shut off the feature thas dims the screen in low light? It drives me crazy! Every time I start typing the shadow from my hand makes the screen dim. Apple needs to fire whoever came up with this stupid feature!
I was using Lab Tick to do it, but with the new update, it stopped working

The Displays Preference has a checkbox labeled "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes". Try unchecking it and see if that does what you want.

  • When I am talking on the phone, is there a way to shut off the screen so my face does not press buttons?  I am using an Iphone 4.

When I am talking on the phone, is there a way to shut down the screen so that my face does not touch the buttons?

It is supposed to shut off on its own. Some users have reported cases or screen covers that have interfered with the proper functioning of the proximity sensor. If you've removed those and cleaned the screen and still have the same problem you may have a defective proximity sensor. You may find more information by doing an internet search for "iphone proximity sensor."

  • Shutting off the screen

Hi I switched to Mac from Compaq (laptop) about 6 months ago. One feature i used to use with the PC laptop was being able to shut my computer screen only when I closed the lid on my laptop. The default setting was to put the computer to sleep, but I just wanted to be able to close the the laptop (and basically save the screen from being on, and emitting light) whilst having the normal power safe rules apply.
Is there anyway i can do this with my mac book pro?
At present if I close the lid on my mac book pro it goes to sleep
The main issue I have here is what if I'm down loading something or it's doing a back-up with Super Duper. I just want to be able to have the screen off whilst this is happening thus going to sleep is not a good option
    any ideas?
    cheers
    Bishan

Some people have used Insomniax or Caffiene to do this. I agree with Sig, I like to just set my screen to go to sleep in a few minutes and have the computer sleep off. Sometimes I download something after I go to bed that may take a few hours. With it set this way I can just tap the space bar see what the progress is and in a few minutes the screen turns off again.

  • Randomly Shuts Off Then Screen Stays Black...?? Very New At This...

So this is my first Mac ever, I bought it from someone off of Craig's List about 4 or 5 months ago. It's a 17-inch PowerBook G4 ... I really don't know much specs about it, I'm not too computer savvy when it comes to specs and rams and ghz and all that - I don't even know what any of that means.
I think I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 .. Or at least that's what someone told me.
Anyways, it's been working amazing until recently - never had a problem with it until now. Whenever I would close my laptop, it normally would go into sleep mode, but within the past week, I noticed that it would turn on while the laptop is closed... I could hear it turning on, and then the Apple on the outside was lit up. The only way I could stop this from happening was to completely shut down the laptop before closing it.
THEN... while I'm using the laptop, it would blink black and then back to normal and then randomly shut down. I would have to press the power button for it to come back on. It would do that several times in a row...
THEN... it started to go black like that, but then when I would try to turn it back on, I could hear it booting up, and it would sound like it's on, but then the screen would remain black.
I could very very faintly see the outline of stuff on the screen, but it would only stay like that for a few seconds then fade to completely blackness. I would have to continually press the power button, sometimes having to restart it several times before the screen actually comes on.
Today, is when it did it for the longest - the screen went out this morning, and I couldn't get it to come back on until maybe 30 mins ago. And that's cuz I got kinda frustrated and slapped the sides on each side of the mouse pad and then the screen flicked back on as if I hit the computer just right for it to turn on.
Sooo I don't know what to do... it's gotten progressively worse with this problem. Being a second hand Mac, I don't think it's under any kind of warranty to take it into the Apple store to get looked at... and therefore, I don't know how much it would cost to get it fixed. If it's even something serious or minor.
I don't have much money to spare because I'm in college currently and barely make the money to pay my tuition.
Oh yea, it also doesn't matter if I'm using it just on the battery, or if it's plugged in. It does it no matter what.
    Any suggestions??
    Please help...
And keep in mind I don't know a lot of technical terms...
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
There are a number of possible approaches to your issue. At first I thought it may be that your logic board was going out. The it sounded as if you needed to Reset the PMU. Finally, who talked about slapping it around and getting results, it sounds like it may be a loose display cable or something of that sort. Since you are completely new to Macs your best bet would be to go online and make an appointment at the Genius Bar in your local Apple Store. It costs nothing. They will look over your computer and give you an idea of what is wrong and what it will cost to rectify it.
Meanwhile, to help to identify your computer more closely, while the computer is booted go to Apple Menu > About this Mac. That will tell you the OS you have installed, the Processor speed and the computer you have. Please report this info back with you response.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

  • Is there a way to shut off the screen of an imac, while leaving a power point running?

I have a slide show set to run on a connected monitor, but don't want to leave the screen of the mac on while it is running. I've tried **** control eject with no luck. On my pc I was able to just turn the screen off and it would still show, but there is no button like that on the imac since it is all in one. is there a way around this?

You cant switch off the power to the monitor but you can send it to sleep.
1 - Apple > System preferences > energy saver: set the monitor to sleep at the shortest duration
2 - While the second display is connected and powered on,  System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement:  deselect the Mirror Displays option
While the presentation plays on the secondary display, the Mac display will go to sleep as there is nothing on the screen during play, entering display sleep within seconds.

  • Ipad2 has started shutting off when screen shooting

This has only started since ios7 update

Try a Restart.  Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Resetting your settings You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
Resetting your device Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.   Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.    http://www.apple.com/contact/

  • IMac fan will not shut off. Screen discoloration. Mac disappointment.

I have an iMac (3.06 24") about a year old. About 2 weeks ago the fan(s) started running all the time. This had happened once before about 6 months ago. An SMC reset and PRAM reset "fixed" it that time. This time though all attempts did nothing. The iStat widget showed normal temps except for the ambient temp which read a ridiculous 259 degrees. I did a Apple Hardware test and got an error code for the temp sensor. Took it to apple store 5 days ago. They said they would replace the temp sensor on HD and since they noticed screen discoloration at bottom left of screen they would replace that too while they were at it.
Today they called to tell me the temp sensor did not fix it and they were replacing the logic board. This has turned into a "thing."
I am very thankful that it happened 13 days before my apple care expired. (whew!)
I am glad that Apple is fixing it.
I am disappointed however that this happened at all. I never had any problems with my Macs in 10 years and now it seems the last two major mac purchases have been problematic. My macbook pro has performed poorly. latch broken. casing bent. battery awful etc. And now this iMac thing.
I post this for a few reasons.
    1. To help anyone that has a fan issue and let them know that it could be potentially serious so stay on top of these little things.
    2. Apple care. Apple care. Apple care.
    3. I'm curious if others have issues with their similar model imacs. Did the logic board fix stick?
    4. Is there currently ANY machine in the Mac line up that is a solid workhouse with few, if any, problems. Please don't let this turn into a "If you had a PC it would be worse" thread. I know that. I'm already a believer. I just hold apple to a higher standard.

I've been repairing electronic equipment for over 40 years and you are always going to run into components breaking down; that's what warranties are for. I always advise buying AppleCare if you plan on keeping your Apple product over a year. It also adds to the resale value if and when you sell it under 3-years old. Tip: You can buy an AppleCare plan for an iMac for about 1/2 the cost of retail on eBay. I buy all my plans there and never had a problem.

  • Problem: Screen Shuts Off For No Reason

I have the new iPhone 3G.
My screen shuts off (the screen turns black, but the phone is still on...like if you shut the monitor off on a desktop PC while the tower is still on) randomly which requires me to do a hard reset (holding the sleep button at the top of the phone and the home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears).
This happens without warning when I do the following:
    1. During a call, when I need to use the keypad, put a call on hold, activate speakerphone, etc. the screen will stay black and will not turn on when I touch it. This means I can't even end a call unless the caller hangs up. It is clear that the phone is still on (I can hear the caller at the other end), but I cannot use the screen at all. The screen comes back on when I put the phone back up to my ear, but then when I pull it away to touch the screen it goes black again.
    2. After I complete a call, the screen will shut off before I can press the "end call" button. Even after the call is terminated from the other end, I cannot make the screen come back on.
    3. After the screen automatically goes to sleep (goes black), I cannot make it come back on.
In all 3 of these instances, I use a hard reset to make the screen come back on. In the first instance that I listed, I have to do a hard reset during the call in order to disconnect the call and get the screen to come back on.
These problems do not happen during/after every single call. For example, sometimes it will be after one call, other times it will be after five calls. It happens without warning and without reason. It is very inconvenient because I am resetting my phone several times a day. When I call customer service lines (for any company), I can't use the keypad to do things such as "Press 1 for English" without doing a hard reset in the middle of the call and calling back several times until it works.
I would really appreciate it if you could offer some advice on how to fix this problem.
    Thank you.

I had the same problem, and a very helpful person in another thread suggested I try removing the phone from the case, as it's probably blocking the little sensor next to the earpiece. When it's close to your head, the display shuts off (because, naturally, you're not using the screen). When you take it away, the screen should pop up. If that sensor is blocked, the thing thinks it's still next to your head.
I'm going to experiment without the case for a few days. if it's fixed, great. If it's not, I'm taking the stupid thing back to the Apple Store. We'll see.
Course, if you don't have a case... I'd say either attempt to erase and restore it from within iTunes or get on the horn with Apple support.

  • Shut off screen without shutting down accelerometer in Touch

Due to Apple firmware limitations in the 2G iPod Touch, it is not possible to shut down the Touch screen and keep the accelerometer running, so running the Sleep Cycle application on the iPod Touch causes the screen to stay on all night and become very warm
Apple please please could you change the Touch firmware to support shutting off the screen without shutting down the accelerometer so that Sleep Cycle can be run on the Touch like it now runs on the 3G and 3GS iPhone.
This would open this excellent little application to the whole Touch market segment, making the developers very happy and allowing me to get up in the morning.
