Netflix on Front Row

I have an old late 2006 iMac that runs on OS X 10.6.8. I recently discovered Front Row was on here and I started to use it frequently.
Now, the problem is I did not want to keep paying for a different episode of a show I wanted every time I wanted to watch one. I also am paying for Netflix so I thought it would be useful if I could get Netflix on Front Row. I know the plug-in Understudy does NOT work anymore and I was hoping there were any other plug-ins or at least any other ways to get Netflix on Front Row.

Any suggestions?

"Understudy" (Netflix/Hulu in Front Row))

Hi.
Yesterday, I discovered "Understudy". When installed on my Intel iMac it adds Menu Options to stream Netflix and/or Hulu content within Front Row. It seems to work pretty well, with some hiccups. Wish it was available for TV too. My question is: Has anyone been ale to use Understudy on a Mac G5. I'd like to install it on my G5 Quad but first should like feedback from someone who has already tried it on a non-Intel Mac. Also I have heard that there's a version of "Silverlight" that works with Power PC Macs, thereby allowing streaming from Netflix. Any info out there from readers of this forum?

QQ- How did you get understudy to install. I keep getting an error telling me it required 10.5? I see your profile says your machine is running 10.4.11 like mine.

Front Row or ATV2

I have a mac mini 2009, I am considering selling and getting an ATV2 to use, as I only use for streaming. Is the new interface for ATV2 the same as Front Row?

I've got three new Apple TVs and the experience is MUCH better than Front Row. The UI is a bit nicer on the eyes and far more informative (there's more details for media) and, of course, you get a beautiful Netflix interface. Really, it's a shame that Front Row hasn't been updated to match the Apple TV experience since, I imagine, quite a few people use the two together.
Then again, it's a shame that Front Row hasn't been updated at all. It's really languishing.

Why did Front Row dissapear

I would like to know why they removed Front Row in OS X Lion.
I used it all the time and loved it.
Could they make an AP out of it?

Also, like the article mentioned said, there are better
and more all inclusive products out there. I always
thoght Front Row was pretty lame as it was limited
to interfacing with Apple products. Programs like PLEX
(my choice) opens an entire world up for a media experience.
It not only indexes and gives access to you movies, pictures,
and music, but with the myriad of pluggins gives access to all
sorts of media either local or online. Pluggins are available
for HULU, Netflix, CBS, ESPN, etc.

Mini, Front Row, and HDMI...

Picked up a new Mini to merge our server (iTunes, iPhoto, et al were being served off my laptop, which was fine only when I was at home) with our Apple TV. Mostly a positive thing... moving iTunes and iPhoto onto the Mini went smoothly, the Mini plugged right into the power cable and HDMI cable that were there for the Apple TV, so that went wonderfully. Outputting to a 42" Samsung LED-backlit LCD in our family room.
Our only big downside right now: if we leave Front Row running, and turn off the TV, when we turn it back on later we're greeted with a solid blue screen that doesn't respond to the remote, the keyboard or mouse... we've had to reboot twice in the two days we've been set up like this. For now, we just have to remember to turn off Front Row... if we're on the normal Finder, it doesn't seem to have this problem.
Is this a known HDMI/Mini/Front Row issue, where it gets into a bad state if the TV is turned off, or something particular to my set up? I was kinda hoping this would be our entertainment system moving forward, it's certainly happier in other ways (gives our family a nice central place to plug in iPods, iPhones, iPads, expands easily, etc, etc)...

PS: Our other minor gripe, for those who care, is just Front Row feeling like a step back from the Apple TV interface (which used to look like Front Row when we first got it, but got better)... I'd switch us to Plex, but it doesn't play our TV shows and movies off iTunes, so I'm hoping Apple will update Front Row someday to be something happier.

So far so good on the Mini... the down side (other than the hanging blue evil screen) is just how clunky Front Row is. The Apple TV interface wasn't perfect, but it was much cleaner than the Front Row interface.
We were watching Netflix streaming through Plex last night... Plex is awesome, I'd absolutely use it full-time and forget Front Row except we own a lot of movies and TV shows we've purchased through iTunes, and Plex can't play DRM'ed video. Because of that, right now we're using Plex for things like Netflix, Daily Show, Hulu, etc, and Front Row for our purchased media.
We copied our libraries over onto the Mini, consolidating them along the way.
With our previous setup, we had movies and TV shows on an external drive that was connected to my laptop, streaming to the Apple TV... which worked fine except when I needed to take my laptop somewhere, then the family was stuck watching whatever was actually living on the Apple TV.
Music, a lot of it was on my iTunes, but my wife and daughters had stuff on their iTunes on their machines... and with a plethora of iPhones, iPods, and iPads in the house now, we found we weren't using our laptops as media devices as much.
We started talking about collecting all our material (music, TV, movies, photos, etc) and putting it all on one device... then the Mini came out, and it looked perfect to just replace the Apple TV and be our central hub for everything!
So far, it's great... full 1080p, fast little box, moving the material over was painless, everything's syncing there now... just want a Front Row replacement that'll play iTunes video, and want to be able to leave that thing up all the time and expect it to be there when I turn the TV on.

I upgraded to OS X Mavericks however I cannot access Front Row

Hi,
I used to be able to call up the menu screen on our iMac using the remote, however I cannot do this any more.
My daughter upgraded our system to OS X Mavericks and now I cannot access Front Row.
The Red Chair icon is not in our applications list either
I tried to download an update to Front Row and the message reads that this update require Front Row so it can update.
I cannot find Front Row anywhere.
If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

The $99 alternative to Front Row is the AppleTV box. You connect it to an HDMI port on your TV and to the internet either wirelessly or wired.
You turn on Home Sharing on both iTunes and AppleTV and you will have access to all of the compatible media from your computer while iTunes is running
If you have an iPhone or iPad and depending upon the age of your iMac, it supports AirPlay, which will "move" the media you are watching from these devices to your TV through the AppleTV. If your iMac is too old, look at Air Parrot.
In addition to access to the iTunes Store, AppleTV gives you many extras, such as subscription required services such as Netflix, HBOGO, PBS, Smithsonian, and many more that do not require a subscription (for example, when travelling I watch the NBC Nightly News as a free Podcast).

FRONT ROW NOT INCLUDED IN LION????? (Rephrased as question since they erased my post!)

So I won't get my post, that many people we're discussing and figuring out a work around for Front Row, deleted by admin's I'll rephrase as a question.
WHY DID APPLE DELETE FRONT ROW? WILL THE REPLACE IT WITH ANOTHER APP? AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT THINKS APPLE TV IS POINTLESS IF YOU HAVE A MACBOOK WITH HDMI OUTPUT?
I hope instead of the admin's deleting this post (which to me shows they don't like the fact that we're downing Apple TV) they will give us an answer or some better work around. Otherwise the remote is pointless because if you can't see iTunes small text from across the room there's no way to control your Mac from across the room. Please discuss & don't delete.

No, like I said, Apple TV doesn't have a hard drive, so you can't download anything to it. You can only stream content in real time from other sources, either your Macbook, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or the internet. There is content available from Apple (and Netflix and MLB) that you can stream from the internet directly to your Apple TV, but it isn't always the same as the downloadable content. For example, you might be able to download a copy of the latest "Parks & Recreation" to your Macbook hard drive and then watch it by streaming it from your Macbook to your Apple TV. But that same episode might not show up in the Apple TV menu as a program available for direct streaming.
I think it's fair to say that Apple TV is an interface and works very similarly to Front Row, it's just makes things more convenient because you don't need to hook your computer up to the TV or worry about balancing your laptop on the edge your entertainment center, etc. It's the size of a hocky puck and fits seamlessly into the rest of your entertainment center.
Are they getting rid of FrontRow because they want to increase Apple TV sales? I don't know, but sometimes I get the feeling that Apple does things more out of a "let them eat cake" arrogance than outright greed. They probably decided in a meeting somewhere that Front Row wasn't "necessary" anymore because Apple TV provides a much more "elegant" solution. The fact that not everyone wants to shell out $99 for an Apple TV is probably not much of a concern to them.

Is there a way to open Front Row without the remote?

I wonder, is there some keyboard shortcut that will open front row?
I ask because a while ago I was about to force-quit an application(cmdoptesc), and then I cancelled(esc) that and toggled to another application's window(cmd+tab), etc., all of this using only the keyboard. But because of the application that wasn't working right, things got slow, and after waiting a couple of seconds for the other window to appear... Fron Row just appeared in front of me!!!
I don't know if it was some keyboard shortcut that i accidentally pressed, or just a bug. Does enyone know?

How Do I Use An External Drive Folder For Front Row???

I have recently bought a 1 TB external drive for my media vidoes and music and have moved all my files over to the external drive and want to use the new folders for movies on front row.
When i go to front row it only has movie folders found on my built in Harddirve, and no folders from the external drive. How to i select this drive to play movies on front row from the external drive?????

oh man thank you so much i was having a brain **** about how to run them on front row. I can't believe i didn;t think about that.

Remote for front row

I just upgraded to Leopard and was checking out Front Row. I can use the arrow keys to navigate but since I am on a Powerbook I have no remote or sensor to pickup one. I am curious if there are third-party remotes available for older Macs. I have an EyeTV Hybrid which came with a remote. Is it possible to use something like this with Front Row?

I too have a Powerbook running Frontrow and I just bought this off eBay for cheap. http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/errf1/ this is a remote made by Keyspan for Frontrow.

How to Delete Item from Front Row?

Someone sent me a short imovie project and it was automatically downloaded to my "Download" folder. When I opened Front Row, the project name it's right under "Movies" along with "iTunes Top Movies", "Theatrical Trailers" and "Movie Folder".
I then moved the project file from "Download" to another folder created under my "Movie" folder. When I went to Front Row again, the original project was still under the list in Movies, now it's also in "Movies Folder". So basically it's showing up twice in Front Row in different places.
I see that once I play the movie from my Movies folder directly from the folder, it's automatically set to Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Movies. So it's showing up in Front Row via iTunes, and it's also showing in Front Row via my Movies Folder.
I just want to organize Front Row so that I don't have a long list of projects immediately under "Movies" in Front Row. I want these projects to neatly go in one personal movie folder only.
Is there a way to reorganize the items list in Front Row?
How do I delete the item that's originally placed under "Movies" in Front Row?

How can I move Front Row to a different display?

I love using Front Row with my MacBook, but I'd love it even more if I could move Front Row from my main display on my laptop onto my second display--a TV screen. I own a Apple mini-DVI to RCA & S-video adapter, and I use this to connect to my TV screen. Obviously, I can get Front Row on my TV screen by turning on Mirror Displays or setting the TV screen as my main screen (dragging the menu bar icon to the second display in the Displays system preference), but both these methods require me to sacrifice use of my desktop on my laptop while I use Front Row.
Simply put, can I possibly (even sneakily) move Front Row to my second display? Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, since Front Row has no preferences you can actually change, there's no way to change the screen now. (Besides the work arounds you've already discovered.) I would send Apple some Mac OS X feedback (since Front Row is considered part of OS X, not a stand-alone application) and let them know you'd like to be able specify the screen. You're not the first person here to ask for that option.

MBP Clamshell Mode - DVI to TV Adapter - Front Row Works - But No Video?

Hi all,
Have picked up an Apple DVI to TV adapter for my MB Pro. Have successfully got it to work in clamshell mode displaying Front Row on the TV without the external Mouse or keyboard.
However, it will not play videos or movies on the TV.
If I keep the lid open, it will play the video/movie on both displays as hoped. However, when I close the lid, all other Front Row stuff works - but no video picture! Is this some sort of overlay issue? How can I fix this? I do NOt want to burn my LCD when using it this way - would be a waste.
Please pass on any thoughts!

I also have this exact same problem. A little annoying since I have just spent $A35 on the mini dvi to dvi adapter and another $A50 on a good quality DVI cable. My LCD tv is set to millions of colors so that is not the issue.
I have a 2.0Ghz Core2Duo Macbook. A quick google search If anyone knows how to fix it I'd be very grateful.

Can I use Front Row with my Macbook closed?

I just got a mini-dvi to video cable for my macbook. I love using front row with it but I was wondering if there was a way that you could use front row with the laptop closed. Oh and I'm using tiger, so its not the new version of front row.

With your computer attached to a keyboard you should be able to wake it from sleep and run it properly with the lid closed.

Why does front row keep on pausing playback?

I'm using my LCD tv as an extended display and as the main desktop. I freshly reinstalled SL and updated it to 10.6.5. Front row keeps on pausing the playback randomly. Note that its not stuttering. As soon as I hit Play on my apple remote, it resumes playback.
any guesses?

I realized that every time I open front row empty "iTunes Music" folder is created even I have "iTunes Media" folder in use. Anyone have any idea how to solve this? I tried to remove Frontrow.plist files but that does not help. I think this could be related to this issue since it is not happening on my other mac which is not having any front row problems...
