Network Connection Failures Affecting Printing and Finder Access

I have a Canon MX320 connected via USB to my iMac running OSX 10.9.1.  The latest Canon printer drivers are installed.  Everything works fine with this printer and computer combination.  The printer is enabled for shaing over the network.
The problem is that occasionally, the iMac seems to disconnect from any other laptop or desktop computer (Macs or PCs) connected through my wireless router.  On a mac laptop (also with OSX 10.9.1) I may lose access to shared directories on the iMac, and more often, I lose the ability to print from the laptop.  The print queues are unchanged on all Macs, but remote printing over the network fails with the message "printer not connected", even though the only change may have been that the iMac hosting the printer went to sleep.
Sometimes, waking the iMac allows the network print job to go through, but typically not if the print job is initiated before waking the iMac.  The printer queue on the laptop will seem fine, with "printer idle", but as soon as the print job is submitted, it briefly reports "looking for printer", and then "printer not connected".  Sometimes, everything (iMac and laptop) needs to be rebooted to re-establish a network printing connection through the iMac.
Trying to reset or delete and re-install the printer queue on the laptop does not fix the problem.  I am assuming that this is because the remote connection to the server (the iMac) has effectively been interrupted or lost.  The iMac may show up in a Finder window on the laptop as a simple PC icon, but with none of the connected directories visible.  trying to re-mount the remote directories by connecting to the "server" (the iMac) often fails.  It is as if something has happened to break the connection to the iMac, and both Finder and network printing are thereby disabled until everything is rebooted.
Printer error log entries:

E [13/Feb/2014:08:21:44 -0500] Unknown directive BrowseAllow on line 10 of /private/etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
This problem is intermittent but seems to be happening often after the Mavericks upgrade.  One should not have to wake up a remote computer prior to connecting to it, or asking a printer connected to it to print a job.

  • The network connection to the printer has been lost.

I have reserved an IP address for my printer in my router. I routinely get the following message in Windows 8.1 64: "Scan to computer is no longer activated. The network connection to the printer has been lost." Also, when printing, sometimes the printing cuts out (i.e. half the job).

    bcbrewster
Well, then the issue remains vague and you must track down a reason for the disconnect -- the connection is breaking between the printer and the computer -- and apparently, from your description - this even happens on occasion during a print job.
    Event Viewer Logs
If the computer is aware of the cause, you might find it in the Event Viewer logs.  There is a wealth of information packed into the daily logs kept by the system on a great many of the computer's actvitiies.  The trick is to 1) find the log containing the information you seek, and 2) Decipher what you have found.
Reading Event Viewer logs is part science and part art.   I cannot tell you precisely where to look because I don't know where your problem is located.
I can give you some information on how to get started:

    Disconnections
Disconnection can be caused by a number of things, most of which you have probably already read about in your searches:
The issue could be due to the need for a Firmware Update.  You would have noted this during your previous Troubleshooting - and the only Firmware update for this model is dated 2013.

Possible causes for connection issues include and are not limited to:
The router should be no closer than three feet (about a meter) to the printer - too close is as bad as too far away
You can try moving things around -- even a few inches one way or another can help
Weak antennas or single antenna routers cannot be "magically" made better; these routers might perform better when placed higher in a room rather than lower.  That is, place the router high on a shelf instead of low in a cabinet
Try changing the channel -- 6, 11 might work better
Try using a static IP outside of the DHCP range of the computers on the same network.

  • I'm trying to update iphone 4s to 5.1 but when plugged into Itunes it says network connection cannot be established and error downloading 5.1

I'm having trouble updating software for my iphone 4s from 5.0.1 to 5.1 but each time i plug into itunes to download it says network connection cannot be established and the phone just says an error has occured.  What can i do?

If you don't have iOS 5, plug your iPhone into your computer, select it in iTunes, and in the Summary, click Check for Update.
If you do have iOS 5, it has onboard updates so you don't have to plug it in, just go to Settings, click General, click Software Update and you will be presented with iOS 5.1 which came out a few hours ago. Both my iPhone 3GS and iPad are already updated to iOS 5.1 now.

  • Can't establish wireless connection between the printer and computer.

I recently upgraded my wireless to an Apple AirPort Time Capsule. I'm able to set up the printer via USB cable. And I'm able to set up the printer on the network via the Airport WPA utility. However I cannot establish a wireless connection between the computer and the printer. When I go to the printers window  in my system prefereces, there is no wireless printer available to add in the "available printers" menu. Only the USB version printer is listed and of course when I disconnect the USB cable it shows as offline.I've tried all the fixes on HP's support pages. I've tried reinstalling the printer on both the router and the computer numerous times. The only thing I haven't done is reinstall the printer using the "Install Wizard" software that is supposed to come with the printer - (mine never came with it in the first place and of course HP doesn't have it available for download). And when I reset the printer to factory settings, then connect it to the computer via the USB, there is no installation software that pops up. Cant even find the **bleep** thing in "Finder". (I'm assuming that it should show up as some sort of external device.) I've checked to make sure both computer and printer are on the same network. (sometimes my computer will grab a connection with the next nearest network.) I've checked all the settings for the printer via the HTML configuration utility. I've even updated my Macbook software and restarted it multiple times. Note: the printer actually worked for a bit when I first switched routers, but the printer's wireless function went offline several times and then quit  altogether. Really frustrated that I bought another HP product thinking this time things would be different. HP is no help unless you want to pay $$ for a phone call. I'm about ready to take this thing out in the desert to use for target practice and never buy another HP product ever again.

Hi , I saw your post regarding the problems you are having with your LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer not showing on your Macintosh computer. I may have found some resources for you.
I have a few questions for you, so I can offer some additional assistance:Before you upgraded to the Apple AirPort Time Capsule, was the printer working wirelessly without any issues?
When you say; 'I reset the printer to factory settings', how where you trying to do this?
I found some instructions from this post: How do I reset my Laserjet p1102w to its defaults, copied here for you:
To restore the printer back to factory settings, turn the printer off, hold down the wireless button and the cancel button (x button) then turn the printer back on and don't release the two buttons until the printer stops making noise. (When they say turn the printer off, I think they mean unplug the power cable.)
"I've checked to make sure both computer and printer are on the same network."  Do you know if you are able to access the printers Embedded Web Server (EWS)?To access the EWS - Make sure that the Ready light () is on and that the printer is idle and silent.Press and hold the Cancel button (), and release it when the Ready light () begins blinking. The configuration page prints.Type the IP address or host name of the product in the address field of a supported Web browser, and then press Enter on your keyboardLet me know if this page loads
To answer a few more items you have listed:... When I go to the printers window in my system preferences, there is no wireless printer available to add in the "available printers" menu. This could be an issue with your print system, I recommend resetting the printing system and then Repair Disk Permissions - after that try to add the printer again.
... the "Install Wizard" software that is supposed to come with the printer - (mine never came with it in the first place and of course HP doesn't have it available for download)HP provides their software/drivers to Apple to be released through your Apple software updates. You can review this document on how to Install a Mac Printer Driver Using Apple Software Update. Which leads into your next point...
... there is no installation software that pops upWhen you connect the USB cable your mac may still recognize the printer software as being already installed - check for apple updatesOn the Mac, click the Apple menu (), and then click Software Update, or click About this Mac, and then click Software Update. A list of available updates displays.
... Not seeing the printer in "Finder" From what I understand most printers will not show in Finder unless you install a memory card into a supported port on certain printer models, only then will it read it like an external device. A few more things you can check are that the new settings in the Apple AirPort Time Capsule are setup to allow the printer to communicate. There are several of these settings listed in this document; Tips and Workarounds for Common Wireless Network Printer Issues.  HP regularly releases firmware updates that may also correct the problem you are experiencing. You can click on this link to Getting Printer Updates for HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer.  I did find 2 more documents that may offer some additional information as well;HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer - Connecting the Printer After Changing Your Wireless NetworkAn 'Unable to Find Printer' Error Displays for the HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer  Please let me know if any of these steps resolved your issue, or the details of what happened.  I look forward to hearing from you, hopefully with good news!   Thanks,

  • Time Cap network connection to laser printer not seen

after giving up on connecting my HP Laser printer (2420dn) via USB to TC (like I used to do), looked on back of 2420 and found network port (with associated netcard blinking lights) so ran a cable from printer port to TC.  Turned on printer and attempted to add printer, with no luck.
Will admit that am clueless in network connecting, so need help please from anyone willing to aid me
My iMac is now running 10.8.1 and I have a 3rd gen TC
The 2420 is no longer supported by HP and it seems that Apple is no longer "training" its AppleCare phone support staff in network connectivity so they were also unable to help
    Thanks a million!

OK, this should be relatively easy.
The printer might be setup for dhcp on ethernet.. just check the display on the printer.. the IP should be available or it will be printed on the test pages. If the printer has not been setup it might show 192.0.0.192 or some weird IP like that. Grab the printer manual and cycle through the options on the printer to set the IP.. and change it to dhcp. If it shows correct ip like 10.0.1.100 then you are fine.. no need to worry.
All later HP printers have http web access to the network setup.. so open your browser and simply type in the IP address. Tell me if that works. Check the name of the printer.. perhaps change it to something easy.. HP2420 might be nice.
There is no setup for you to do on the TC.. a network printer is providing its own network access.
Then just open the printer preference on the computer and check for network printer.. it should automagically find the HP.
I am sure if you google around you will find some nice explanation with youtube video of the process.

  • How to have ethernet connected PC use printer and USB HD connected into TC

So I just got a new Time Capsule (500GB) and the way I have it connected is the cable modem goes through it and then another ethernet cable connects to my desktop PC (no wireless on this PC). Then I have my USB printer and USB HD going into the USB port on the Time Capsule via a USB Hub. Airport utility sees both the HD and the Printer.
My problem is that I can't get my PC to see the HD or the Printer. How does a PC connected through a ethernet cable and not wireless see and use these two peripherals? I have Bonjour for Windows installed but I thought that was for a wireless connection? Also is there a way to open some kind of configuration thing for Bonjour on my PC? Where on my PC would I find the HD and Printer (like in Windows Explorer or Network Places), I can't find these devices anywhere except when looking in the Airport Utility Manual Setup.
Any help would be much appreciated. I don't have much technical knowledge about networks.
Edit: One last thing is that before getting the TimeCapsule, I had a regular D-Link router running my wireless network and the printer was connected directly to the PC. This setup allowed my Macbook to use the printer and access any shared folders/files on my PC. My Mackbook was recently stolen and my new one will arrive next week, so right now I can't really test whether the Macbook can see and use the HD and Printer if they are connected to the Time Capsule. I'm wondering if I should just go back to plugging the HD and printer into the PC and running the network sharing that way????

Just wanted to bump this question to see if anyone has any answers. My main issue is seeing the time capsule from my Windows desktop and the connected harddrive. However, my new problem is that whenever I connect the USB Windows Formated HD to the Time Capsule the whole thing just stops working and my PC and my MacBook can't read the Time Capsule at all until I turn of the USB HD. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Why does my network stop recognizing my printer and telling me it is offline.

I got a photosmart 6510 printer and it loses wifi connectivity.  in order to get it working again i have to toggle the wifi on and off on the printer.  It only maintains a connection for a short time and i have to toggle the wifi on and off again.  The connectivity seems to only be lost between the printer and laptop (running windows 7)  or the printer and phone (android ginger bread).  I have a ps3 on the same network and connectivity to that device is never interrupted. The ps3 connection  works even when my computer and phone report the printer is offline.  I have enabled full trust to my computer and phone and even established a static IP address for the printer.   The update IP address application can't even find the printer when i input its static IP address.  please someone help.

    Thanks for your help.
I was able to find the address line and I did find the screen that allows a person to change the static IP address.
I decided not to mess with the static IP address.
Instead I moved my G router, which is in the basement to another location.
I went 10 days w/out losing printer connection to the network for 10 days.
I did not use the printer during those 10 days.
Right now, I am leaving the printer off until I used it.
I see no reason to leave the printer on for an extended period, if I'm not printing.
If I lose connection, the next time I try to print, then I will move the printer to the first floor.
Otherwise I will buy an N router.
I've been losing connection from my pc to the G router more often lately,
so maybe the router is failing.

  • Connecting a serial printer and a USB printer to my G4

I have aquired two Epson Stylus USB printers one of which I have connected to my Windows machine replacing a Star LS24-200 dot matrix serial printer. The other, a C86, is now connected to my G4 replacing a defunct C84.
The Star is in perfect working order (vintage 1992!) and I have several new ink tapes for it. As I have a serial PCI card in my G4, to which is connected an external HD and a Lacie CD-ROM drive, can I also connect the Star printer as a second printer in order to save on black inkjet cartridges?
The external CD-ROM drive and external HD were originally connected to my now redundant 7500/100 Mac. They are still useful though if I have to disconnect them there will not be a problem.
    Any suggestions please?
    Dual 450 MHz G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

"As I have a serial PCI card in my G4, to which is connected an external HD and a Lacie CD-ROM drive, can I also connect the Star printer as a second printer in order to save on black inkjet cartridges?"
If previously used with your 7500, these external peripherals are undoubtedly SCSI devices, so your G4 must have a SCSI (not "serial") PCI card, such as the Adaptec 2906 with a DB-25 port. Unless that 1992-vintage printer is equipped for connection via SCSI and has Mac drivers that are compatible with the current OS on the G4, you won't be able to connect/use it. Before the ease of USB connectivity, a typical PC printer cable was described as a "Centronics-36 to DB-25" and was intended for connection to the PC's DB-25 parallel port. Although similar in appearance to the DB-25 SCSI port found on many Macs and SCSI peripherals, the two buses are not compatible. Damage to the peripheral and/or host device can occur, if a PC printer is connected to a Mac's SCSI port.
Your only option for using the printer with a Mac would be a USB-to-parallel adapter with included drivers for the printer, such as the now-discontinued "PowerPrint" product. If you check eBay, you may be able to find one.

  • Connection failures between iMac and Macbook Pro

I'm experiencing frequent connection failures over my wi-fi network between my iMac and Macbook Pro on an otherwise strong, stable network. I can connect both of my computers to the Airport Time Capsule that I use as my wireless router without a problem, but for some reason I get connection failures between the computers say, 50% of the time. • Designing a network with 6 base stations and an Access control lists

I have 6 airport extreme (802.11n) base stations setup in my studio.
I'm a little concerned about security as they're all setup individually (wireless mode: Create a wireless network) with the same Network names (mystudio) and WPA/WPA2 personal password so my roaming users don't have to keep entering passwords / experience dropouts etc
i have lots of freelancers who are in and out of the studio and there isn't anyway for me to monitor who is currently connected to my wifi network.
i'd like to setup a wireless network that only allows you to connect to the WIFI network only if your MAC address is on the access control list.
is this possible with Apple Airport extreme base stations or would it be a better idea for me to invest in a 3rd party product?
all the base station are connected to an Ethernet point and have static IP's assigned to them.
whats the best way to deploy such a solution;should i keep the setting as they are and manually enter the mac address for 30 portable machines on each base station or is there a more pragmatic solution...
any help / input would be much appreciated.
    Thank You

When employing Access Control in a roaming network configuration, the MAC addresses would be required to be entered atr each of the base stations ... as there is no means (unfortunately) to have them "automatically" migrate amongst them.
However, one important thing to note. Only wireless security, using WPA or WPA2, will actually secure the wireless network. MAC addresses can easily be spoofed. Someone, determined to do so, can still access your network ... even if secured by Access Control.

  • How do you connect a usb printer and usb external hard drive to the airport extreme, as it only has one usb port?

I'm thinking about upgrading my old 802.11g router for a new airport extreme. Can it connect to a usb printer and external hard drive at the same time and acutally work. It only has one usb port on the back.
    thank you!

To add multiple USB printers and/or HDDs, you just first need to connect a USB hub (powered prefereably) to the AirPort's USB port, and then, add the USB devices to the hub.

  • Can I connect both a printer and a hard drive to time capsule using a usb hub?

since there is only one usb port on a time capsule, can i connect a printer and a hard drive using a usb hub?

You can use a USB hub if you need one to connect an external drive and a printer. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2421?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
