Network Drives not available in Applications?

Hi,
I have a mcabook pro running leopard and another mac on my network that is not. This other mac has my firewire drive hooked up to it and all my files are saved there. I can access the other computer and drive just fine through the finder but when I am in an application the other computer and the drive are not available when I am trying to open or save a file. Can anyone help? Is there a way to add an icon for my other computer to the dock or to my desktop?

That's a large part of the problem. You have more than one font manager on your Mac. If you're not using Font Book, delete it. Then you need to reset its orphaned database so OS X stops trying to control which fonts are, or aren't active according to that data.
To remove Font Book from the hard drive, follow these steps:
1) Open Font Book, and then its preferences. Uncheck the box for "Alert me if system fonts change". Close the preferences and shut down Font Book. Put the Font Book application in the trash and delete it.
2) Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding it until OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally.
This will reset Font Book's database and clear the cache files in your user account. The main goal in this step is to remove the orphaned Font Book database from the hard drive. With the Font Book application no longer on the hard drive, a new one cannot be created. Which is what we want.
3) Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and all user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.

It thinks it's supposed to be booting from a Server, have you ever used that?

  • Option to create a new airport network is not available.

My family has 4 new Intel core 2 duo imacs running OS X 10.4.8. Mine is connected via ethernet to a router, which is connected to the dsl modem. My system also acts as the airport connection for the three other systems which share my internet connection via the buitin airport wireless.
I want to create a new, more secure airport computer to computer network using high encryption, but the option to create a new network is not available. It's not in the airport menu from the title bar, it's not in network preferences, it's not in Internet Connect. I created a new location and it did not allow me to create a new airport network.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, depends a bit where you set it up, but I'd look in Internet Connect First, if you can't find it there then launch the Keychain Access app in Utilities.
Mounting a Network Share at startup is simple as pie...
Once it's mounted on the Desktop, open System Prefs>Accounts, click on the Login Items... drag the Network Share there!
Or, Sharepoints Automounter does it easily also...
    http://www.hornware.com/sharepointsautomounter/
But the solution I prefer is to just drag the Icon to the right side of the Dock between Applications and Trash, or a folder full of Shares, for a Popup Menu!

If this doesn't resolve it you most likely have a hardware failure. Fortunately, your phone is in warranty, so if you take it to an Apple store they will replace it.

  • I can not update to itunes 10.4, and when I try manually it keeps saying error f drive not available??

I have tried loads of times to update to Itunes 10.4 but it fails every time and tells me to try and download the file manually then install it but this also fails and keeps giving me a error of "F drive not available"
I have itunes on a removable hard drive on my laptop if this makes any difference
    Please help
    Thanks

Open a Windows Command prompt, e.g. Hit Start > Run, type in CMD and press OK. Type in SUBST F C:\<enter>
This will map F: to C: until the machine is restarted or you enter
SUBST F: /D at the command prompt. Now you can try uninstalling or upgrading the software again. (If upgrading the software, install the software in the default location, not on the F:\ drive.)

  • Each time i order a book, it says "network connection not available". Any tips to troubleshoot?

Each time I try to order a book, it says "network connection not available". Any tips to troubleshoot?

As the error message says, you computer cannot connect to the network.
It is difficult for us to give advice since we do not know your network setup. Try the network diagnostics utility:
         Open System Preferences -> Network ;
At the bottom of the window is a button labelled "Assist me", press it, then in the drop down panel press "Diagnostics" and inspect your network status.

  • WD network drive not detectable after installing Mavericks!!

I just installed OS X Mavericks on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro at the suggestion of a genius at the bar, as a cure for the relentless spinning beach ball on my screen.  I bought a new portable drive then and there and backed up my computer before the installation.
However, virtually ALL of my data is stored on a WD network drive (WD netcenter - legacy product) and since the Mavericks installation I can not access the drive - it does not show up in the finder, and it is not visible in disk utility.   When I click on my sidebar folders, the message is "there was a problem connecting to the server "wd-netcenter".
I found some discussions about Mavericks corrupting external drives, and then read about the need to update WD drive managers.  So I downloaded the new WD drive manager from the WD website, however I still cannot see the drive.  I have also restarted both my MacBook and the drive.
    Can anyone help ?
    thank you.

So I found my original installation disks and tried to erase the hard drive and re-install but was blocked!
    the installation is "not supported"...
seems there are ways to get around this, however it's too risky for me to mess with it.
none of my network drive's startup applications seem to be supported by mavericks.  I will take your advice and try to find another mac with snow leopard to see if I can access the drive.  I have also contacted western digital for support.   thanks for your help.

  • IMovie won't open unless a network drive is available

When iMovie opens, it shows my iPhoto library in the Events library pane, which is fine, but my iPhoto library is on a network drive. So when I'm NOT attached to my network, iMovie won't open.
I just get the spinner and then eventually I have to crash it.
I'm assuming it's because it can't find the iPhoto library... but, shouldn't it just give up after a while and go ahead an launch?
    -brandon

    Possible workaround...
    1. Create a local iPhoto Library - to do this open iPhoto while holding down the Option key. Give it a unique name and save it somewhere.
    2. When you are not connected to your home network, open iPhoto with the Option key held down, and select your new local Library. Then open iMovie.
iPhoto remembers the last Library open, so as you move in and out of your home network you will need to change the iPhoto Library (following step 2 above) based on your location.
    hope this helps,

  • Hp laserjet 1022 driver not available

I am running 10.8.2 on a MacBookPro.  After the recent update of the OS my HP Laserjet 1022 stopped functioning.  In Mountain Lion, the HP drivers are meant to be installed by the OS. However all my attempts to update the driver software from within System Preferences, to to install a new printer have failed.  I always get an error message saying that the appropriate software was not available on the server. Anyone have any ideas on hwo to fix this, or where to get driver software that I can manually install?

Power cycle both devices and try by downloading manually necessary drivers:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
After downloading software, try add your printer again.
    Acording to this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3669#HP
    Your printer is supported.

  • Fonts shown as installed by Font Book not available to applications

I have several fonts that Font Book shows as installed that are not available to any of my applications, including Word and Quark Express. These fonts include Arial Bold, Arial Bold Italic, and Arial Italic, all of which I believe were installed as part of OS 10.4, along with several other fonts in the Arial family that are available to my applications. How can I get all my installed fonts to be available to my applications?
    John Link

    HI John,
Try deleting the FontBook pref file: com.apple.fontbook.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag the .plist file from your Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Launch Word or QE and see if those fonts are available now.
    Validating fonts
If fonts are not displayed as expected when you open documents or you cannot open documents, it's possible fonts have been corrupted. You can validate fonts to confirm they are still safe to use, and remove any corrupted fonts you find.
Take care not to remove system fonts, located in /System/Library/Fonts; removing system fonts could cause some applications to quit unexpectedly.
    To validate fonts:
Open Font Book and select one or more installed fonts to check.
    Choose File > Validate Font.
In the Font Validation window, review the fonts listed for warnings or errors. Use the pop-up menu to display warnings and errors separately, if necessary.
For fonts with warnings or errors, click the disclosure triangle next to the font to see which validation rules show errors.
To remove a corrupted font, click the checkbox next to the font. Make sure fonts you want to keep are not checked. Then click the Remove Checked button.
You can also use the Console utility to troubleshoot problems with installed fonts. In the console.log window, type "font" or a font name (such as "Arial") in the Filter field to find font-related log messages.
You can validate font files before installing the fonts. To do so, in Font Book choose File > Validate Files. Browse to and select a font file to validate and click Open. Font Book displays the Font Validation window and indicates whether it found problems with the font.

  • Option to encrypt time machine network disks not available

I have two MBP' (Os10.8.4) machines that backup over a network to a MM running 10.6.8 retail.
In TM the box to encrypt the backup is grayed out.  I read in Pondini' excellent instructions ( http://pondini.org/TM/31.html ) that it is only available in 10.8. as said, the MBP' are on 10.8.4.
Would this mean that because my MM is running 10.6 it is not available?  seems not logic to me, but can someone confirm this or tell me the workaround/fix?
    Thanks

It probably has to do with how the encryption software is written in 10.6 OS software. I would go with Pondini's
    article.
