Network/Shared Printer on PC

I purchased a MacBook Pro about 2 weeks ago. I was able to connect to my wireless network and my PC computer (Sony Vaio). I added a printer to my MacBook (shared on the Vaio). Printing worked beautifully, I was able to access shared folders located on my PC, and I was thrilled that everything worked so seamlessly. I was elated that set up was so easy. Fast forward one week later. Suddenly, I cannot see my shared Sony Vaio on the MacBook and printing no longer works. I called Apple support, but the tech immediately tried to sell me on getting rid of my Linsys in favor of an Apple router. Nothing on the PC changed. Nothing on the router changed. I don't understand why everything worked one day, but not the next. Any ideas? I have searched the web and forums, but cannot find a fix. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I tried what you suggested and it did not resolve the issue. Some clarification and additional information that may help resolve the issue. I have a Sony Vaio desktop running the network. Vaio connected via ethernet cable to Linksys WRT54GS. MBP successfully connects to the Internet via home network/wireless router. Vaio is Running McAfee Security Suite with correct settings to allow file sharing, etc. In troubleshooting the MBP, I have tried to "Connect to Server". When I "Browse", nothing appears. smb: does not work either. I have tried troubleshooting in Network Preferences, and experienced an oddity. Airport is at the top of the list. When I click "Assist Me" and run "Diagnostics", enter the correct WEP key, I get an error message that I cannot connect, when in actuality, I am connected to the Internet. I then have to cancel the new settings and revert back to original.

  • Adding network/shared printer that's on a Windows box

    Hi all,
    I was wondering how I could add a printer that is on a windows box;
to be more specific, I know I can add it...but the problem is that os x will only add it as a generic postscript driver...it won't add it as the printer itself (a Canon iP3000). I've tried choosing the appropriate printer driver but it's not listed..I've installed the package manuallly and still nothing.
    any help?

The Canon-supplied driver is for USB only. Get Gutenprint from here:

  • Trouble connecting OSX to a shared printer on Vista

I am running OSX 10.4 and can't seem to get it to print to Vista. This is the weird thing. Firstly, I can access shared folders on Vista from OSX, I can print to the printer hooked up to Vista from Vista on Parallels, I can print to the printer connected to my PC from XP through boot camp but I just can't print from OSX direct. So to make that clear I can run Vista on my Macbook Pro with Parallels and print to the network shared printer no trouble at all but not from say Pages or Keynote.
Has anyone got this problem or any suggestions? I have tried customer support and they suggested a few things I had already done like Bonjour, Option button - Windows printing through Samba, Network Neighbourhoood and a few others but with no success. Please help. I am thinking it may be a compatibility issue with Vista, OSX and Printing Service but being this new to Mac I can't be sure of that by a long shot. Thanks for your time guys.

  • "Error while printing" when sharing printer under 10.6

This just started yesterday. When attempting to print from either of two other computers (both 10.4.11) to a printer (HP LJ 1160) connected via USB to a MacBook Pro (10.6.2), the print fails with the cryptic error message: "Error while printing."
I have searched these help forums and have tried repairing permissions on all computers. I have also verified that the /tmp symbolic link is in place on all computers.
I have also tried resetting the print systems on all computers. I am able to add the shared printer on the client computers, but when attempting to print to the selected shared printer I still get the error.
The Console on the client computer generates the following items in the log:
    2010-01-18 08:59:49.452 TextEdit[423] PMSessionValidatePrintSettings failed (error code = -50)
2010-01-18 08:59:50.812 TextEdit[423] Invalid PMPrintSettings in print info
    Any ideas?

on the wife's g4 powerbook, added a network-shared printer, attempts to print to it result in:
PMSessionValidatePrintSettings failed (error code = -50)
    Invalid PMPrintSettings in print info
this same n-s-p works fine on my g4 powerbook, also 10.4.11...
and i haven't been able to print to this printer from my core duo minimac running 10.6.2:

  • Cannot Print to a Windows 8 shared Printer

I have a home network of Windows 8 as a file and Print Server connected to 2 Windows Laptops and a Macbook Air. I have a HP Laserjet attached to the Win 8. When I added the printer on the Mac, it installed the required software. Now, when I try to print from the Mac, I get a msg saying that holding for authentication. On entering the details, the printer dialog box still says holding for authentication.
    Mac OSX - 10.8.3
    Windows 8.
    Printer - HP Laserjet.

This is a very common problem. I encountered this using an HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus printer which was USB connected to a Windows 7 SP1 machine. It was shared to all users using Windows print sharing. Bidirectional file sharing between Windows and iMac 27 running OS X 10.8.5 worked fine. Windows 7 was configured for workgroup sharing, not homegroup or domain-based sharing. This is the simplest, most basic level of sharing in a cross-platform situation.
On the Mac, I installed the HP OS X drivers. After driver installation, the printer model was visible in the System Preferences>Print & Scan>Add Printer dialog.
After adding it the network shared printer on the Windows PC was visible from the Mac and I could check print status, toner levels, etc. However upon trying to print, it would hang in the Mac print queue with the message "on hold (authentication required)".
In my case the solution was pressing the refresh button on the print queue, which ONLY THEN displayed a login authentication screen. It was defaulting to my Mac admin login which (maybe in the goal of visual simplicity) was not shown.
I changed the login to Username: guest, Password: guest, and it printed fine.
This is extremely frustrating, as it took me hours to find this. I see many, many other discussion threads where this is likely the problem. Some of them struggled with this problem for days. This activity is in the COMMON PATH of a large % of users. It is not a fringe or rare activity or an "edge case".
Ideally Mac OS should just transparently handle this. Lacking that, the build-in help documentation should cover it. Lacking even that, at least an Apple KB article should cover it. Lacking even that, if the authentication dialog was not suppressed but popped up by default, at least it would point some users in the right direction.
As it is, not a single one of those things were done, and many people continue to hit this over, and over, and over. It is an embarrassing situation. There are 80,000 Apple employees. If just one of them spent a few minutes to write a KB article about this, it would help a lot.
There are likely other sub-cases which could cause the same error message. You don't want an excessively broad, poorly-worded KB article which implies there's a single solution to a given error. However the problem is nothing has been written or done to address this, and it's apparently been causing users problems for years.

  • Printing to a Windows shared printer, keep getting "Hold for Authentication" when I'm on the Windows shared network and can browse the computers.

I have had two MacBook Pros now, and this has been an issue in Mountain Lion and Mavericks. I've got a shared printer on the local Windows network (it's a USB printer shared via the network and the computer), and the other Windows computers in the house can print to it no problem. The Mac sees it no problem, yet whenever I try to print to it, I just get "Hold for Authentication."
Like I said, persists over Mountain Lion and Mavericks. No other computer in the house has any issues printing to it. I've installed the drivers for the printer as well (Brother HL-2240).
I've tried to follow the instructions here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23268762#23268762 but the printer isn't listed in Keychain Access.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!

Well, that isn't too useful. Try this instead: Adding a printer shared by a Windows computer via SMB/CIFS.

  • Network shared printers stop working; default printer changes

    Hello,
Have an odd printing issue that seems to be ongoing and am trying to come up with a good solution or fix for it.
We have an environment that has a Windows 2012R2 Print Server, that is sharing various printers which are also set to List in Directory.  Some of the printers are HP and are using the HP Universal driver which shows as "True" for Packaged in
the print management window, and some of the printers are Canon which are using device specific drivers and show as "False" for Packaged.  My understanding is that the packaged attribute simply indicates that Point and Print can then download
the driver and install/use it without any security prompts whereas if it is not Packaged, then the driver must be installed on the local server/workstation by an Administrator.  We have Group Policy defined such that all Point and Print restrictions are
    Disabled.
We then have multiple Remote Desktop Session Hosts based on Server 2008R2 (x64).  Users connect to these hosts via thin clients (Wyse) and there is a domain login script using KiXtart that creates printer connections to the shared printers using an address
of \\printserver\printername.  We also set the default printer via the login script each time depending on user's group membership.
Each part of this setup is on it's own routed VLAN subnet, so the Print Server is on 192.168.0.x/24, RDSHs are on 192.168.1.x/24 and the printers themselves are on 192.168.2.x/24.  There is no firewall or other restrictions between the subnets, all traffic
    is allowed to flow.
The issue we are having is two parts, the first is the larger issue, but both are a pain:
    1) Randomly (no discernible pattern/reason/timeframe), some Canon printers will stop appearing in Print dialog boxes from applications when a user tries to print.  It only seems to happen on the Canon printers.  The printer will still show in Control
Panel -> Devices and Printers, but when you right click it and try to go to Printer Properties or view any of the printer settings, you'll get an error saying the printer is not accessible/valid.  I have also tried a WMI query for "select * from
win32_printer" and the printer will not be returned.  To temporarily fix it, we right click the printer, and choose to remove it and then go through the wizard to re-add the same printer from the directory again.  That will correct it and the
user can print again, view all properties, etc.  This doesn't happen to every user but happens sporadically and once it happens to a user it seems to pop up once every week or two.
Now, we have made a change and installed the Canon printers in question locally on the Remote Desktop Session Hosts themselves using TCP/IP ports so that each user logging into the session host will see all of the printers.  This also seems to have resolved
this issue.  So it leads me to think there is some sort of timeout or connection getting dropped, but for no real apparent reason.  This is all on a virtualized platform and so the Print Server and Session Hosts have very reliable LAN connections
amongst themselves.  And further, we never see the issue with the HP printers, they seem to maintain their stability at all times.
    2) The other issue we are seeing is that from time to time the default printer setting changes or vanishes altogether.  It doesn't happen to every user but once it does happen it happens regularly (multiple times a day).  This happens even when using
the locally mapped TCP/IP printer or when using the network print server.  From what I have read and found, this generally seems to be a known issue regarding redirected client printers and some GP settings related thereto.  But we aren't redirecting
any local client printers, everything is network based/shared.
In digging into these two issues I have run across the following error we get regularly in the PrintService Event Viewer log:
The print spooler failed to import the printer driver that was downloaded from \\printserver\print$\x64\PCC\ntprint.inf_amd64_59246c3ac1bd3f2a.cab into the driver store for driver Microsoft enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver. Error code= 800f024b.
This can occur if there is a problem with the driver or the digital signature of the driver.
And digging further into that seems to be that their was an error validating one of the DLL files as seen at the following thread:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/9fe186e4-52f7-4552-a223-b2320cfc9ed5/driver-install-semi-fails-with-800f024b?forum=winserverprint
We get the exact same error that is shown there UNISRV.DLL being flagged as invalid, and have applied the hotfix indicated in KB2701894.
I am not sure the above error is realted to the issues at hand, but figured it is a good starting point to eliminate it as a potential cause of the issue.
Any input or suggestions on what to do to diagnose or further resolve this would be greatly appreciated!

Alan, I'm getting this error 600 in my company. Is there any fix for this problem?
After installing KB2919355 on Windows 2012 R2, when I try to map a shared printer I receive the following error message: A policy is in effect on your computer which prevents you from connecting to this print queue. Please contact your system administrator.
If I uninstall the patch the shared printer maps correctly.
I also notice that if I copy the driver \\server\print$\x64\PCC\ntprint.inf_amd64_a7ac65d1b7714fb1.cab
from a Windows 2012 R2 before applying KB2919355 to the server that has the patch applyed (and rename it), I can map the printer.
Does anyone know if there is a fix for that?

  • How do I send email and web pages to a shared printer on home network. I verified that I can send documents to the shared printer.

  • Connecting to a shared printer on a local network

I want to connect my iBook G4 to my Dell Windows computer to utilize a shared printer on the Dell. We currently use a local area network. What do I have to do to my iBook to use this printer. Should the printers we are trying to connect to appear on my computer? I want to connect over our wireless network to a computer connected to our Dell Windows computer.
    Thanks for your help.

I was having difficulty logging in to the server via. Finder, this is what worked for me.
    Netgear Router - WNDR 4000
    Mac OSX 10.5.8
After selecting "Connect to Server" in Finder I typed in "smb://readyshare" and I pushed the connect button.  I was prompted with a username and password and I typed in the username and password that I use to log in to the Netgear router.
I recently upgraded from a WNDR3700 and I did not have to do the above.  The readyshare server showed up in Finder a few minutes after I connected the USB drive.
This worked for me, hope it works for you.

  • How to assign the proper printer driver for a network shared HP PSC 1315 on the client side

    Hi,
For the sake of simplicity I'll start with the simplest part: I have successfully  got the above mentioned printer to work on the PC where it is connected to via USB (running MS Windowx XP SP 3). I recently downloaded the latest install program for the printer drivers to do that. I connected it then to another PC (also MS Windows XP SP 3), and also installed the printer drivers using the HP install program and could also print on that one.
Now I wanted to share. I shared the printer on the PC connected to the printer, and on the other one I started the "Add printer" dialogue, chose  network, and found it, and selected it. However, I am then told, that the host doesn't have a printer driver so I have to choose one on the client. And this is the problem, as I don't have the printer driver file. As I mentioned, there are no individual divers on the HP home page, only this install program, which I did run on both PCs, but this doesn't help me for the case of assigning the correct printer driver on a network client. Of course I also checked the list of available installed models, but it doesn't show up. So, what do I do?

just so u know I was not trying to print directly to the HP PSC 2355 from my iBook G4, I wanted to print to it over the network, wirelessly. So installing the HP Printer drivers would not serve that purpose. As I tried to explain in my email.
By the way I did find a solution that has worked for me.
The solution is to go to Print & Fax in the System Preferences.
This is assuming that you have shared the printer from the PC.
Then click on the + to add a printer to the iBook G4.
Then click on the More Printers button at the bottom.
You should then ensure that you have Windows Printing selected
You should then make sure that the drop down below is Workgroup I think
Then you should select the computer that u have your printer shared from
Then you should press the Choose button.
Your shared printer should be listed there
You should then select that printer and choose HP from the Model drop down
Then under Model Name pick HP DeskJet 900 series and press the Add button
This model is not for an HP PSC 2355, but it is the appropriate driver for this
printer, if you choose this print driver, everything will work and you can
print wirelessly from your iBook G4 to a HP PSC 2355
I have tested it on several different things including just text and color
graphics as well, and it all worked beautifully, I am so happy now, that I
    figured it out.

  • Can't see shared printer over wireless network

I currently have a newer HP F340 injet printer connected to my emac which is on a wireless network (Linksys) so that I can share internet connection with my MacBook Pro. Both are running Mac OS 10.4.8. When I try to print on my MacBook Pro, I don't even see the shared printer, in fact, there isn't even a separate chioce for shared printers. I used to have a Lexmark printer that actually worked on the network.

After following some advice from a different posting, I loaded the gimp print drivers and recreated the printer in the printer listing using the gimp printer. This worked! The only problem I had was that I had to load the whole Mac OSX base system and then the print drivers. This messed up my system and I had to reset a bunch of user preferences, etc. It took me a couple of hours.

  • Printing on a shared printer from our new iPad on our home network

How can I send a print job to a shared printer on our home network?  The iPad uses this network's WiFi capability.

It depends on the printer. iOS devices can only print directly to AirPrint printers. All AirPrint printers are wireless but not all wireless printers are capable of using AirPrint.
To print directly from an iPad / iPhone you will need an AirPrint compatible printer or another device to act as a print server. That can be a Mac computer running Printopia ($19.95 with free trial) or handyPrint (donation - supported). The Mac must be "on" but may be asleep for them to work. Equivalent PC options may exist but you're on your own finding them.
You can also buy this standalone print server:
    http://www.lantronix.com/it-management/xprintserver/xprintserver.html
These options enable you to use any printer available to your network, even older ones that may predate AirPrint by decades.
Otherwise you will need to buy an AirPrint printer or multifunction device.
