Networking a G5 dual 2.5ghz and a Powerbook G4/550 (Gigabit Ethernet)

I have two macs. A PowerMac G5 dual 2.5ghz with 2 gigs ram. My other one is a Powerbook G4/550 (Gigabit Ethernet)(with PCMCIA Slot). I have the G5 at my desk and the Powerbook upstairs (about 100 feet by walking 40 feet as the crow flies. I have a 115 year old house with unGodly thick mortar walls that make any networking a challenge so I do not want to guess. I want the best networking solution afordability wise and efficiency wise. Mobility is not that big of a deal and speed of data transfer is paramount. I also do not want slow download or transfer speeds on either machine. I don't transfer mush from BIG MAC to small mac but the internet thing (SPEED) is important. I do movie and music editing on both and maintain a web site daily with tons of each on it. Should I wire the thing to avoid slow wireless speeds and what all do I need. I know my laptop (Original Airport) speed is 11mbs. but I can't seem to find any comparison to ethernet wired speeds. I have DSL and no airport card and don't mind wiring if the speed is lots better. Can someone straighten me out or point me to the andwers? Please? indigorob

If speed is important then you want to run ethernet cable between the computers. The Mac's ethernet (10/100/1000) connector is capable of 10 megabits/second, 100 megabits/second, and 1000 megabits/second (Gigabit Ethernet). The original airport is about 11 megabits/second. The Airport Extreme/Express is 54 megabits/second.
You can easily get at least 100 megabits/second by running wired Ethernet.

  • PowerMac G5 DUAl 2.5Ghz and older ATA drives, HOW ?

    Hi everybody.
I have question maybe someone could help me with.
I now have a G5 Dual 2.5 and also 3 ATA133 drives from my old G4. I need to install the 3 ATA133 drives into my G5, but from what i have read someware, the G5 uses another system, right ? its not ATA133 anymore.
So how is the easyest way to get my 3 ATA133 drives to work indside the G5 ?
Do i need a ATA133 controller card (PCI) or something else, does the G5 have PCI at all ?
If somebody could help me out here, i would be very happy indeed.
    Thx a lot.
    Mugge

This depends on which model of dual 2.5 you have. The dual processor 2.5 has PCI slots. The dual core dual processor 2.5 (quad) has PCI-Express slots. Both G5 models use SATA (Serial ATA) hard drives so you do need a controller card to attach your ATA drives.
Apple doesn't support mounting more than two hard drives internally in the G5s so it might be easier to just get firewire cases for your hard drives and make them all external.

  • Dual Band (5ghz and 2.4 ghz) Wireless Network Config and Dropped Connection

Hi, I have an Airport Extreme (802.11N) and a Motorola WR850G (802.11A/B/G) that I'm trying to connect in a dual band setup - but something in my setup is causing the Airport to drop it's connection (before the connection is dropped - everything works great). After I lose connectivity, both routers show up in my list of wireless networks, the light stays green, but I don't have local or internet access. When I try to reconnect, the log on times out. Also, the Airport isn't displayed in the Airport Utility (light is green on the airport itself though). Unplugging and resetting the Airport Allows all computers on the network to connect locally and to the internet for a few hours until the connection drops again. While it is up and running, I have no problems streaming movies off the connected Airdisk, navigating the internet, and connecting both N and G devices to the network.
I'd love to hear from you if you've gotten a similar setup to work, and if possible, have you provide the settings you used to make this work. I've looked around quite a bit and haven't seen a detailed description of the process (even from the Apple documentation). Also, advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated since my wireless networking knowledge is pretty basic.
    My configuration:
Time Warner cable modem connected to the Airport's WAN port. WR850G connected by LAN port to Airport's LAN port. Bridge Mode check box selected on WR850G. Airport setup for 802.11n (5Ghz). Unique SSIDs to determine which network is 'N'. Same password for both networks. My Firmware and utilities are up to date.
    Computers/Devices on Network:
Two Macs with Airport Extreme N cards. A Vista PC with a D-link N card (only compatible with 2.4 Ghz so it connects to the G network). A Vista PC with a GB ethernet card connected to the Airport Extreme. Various other G devices like iPod touches and an old iBook. Airdisk connected to the Airport Extreme.
    Thanks,

I removed the second router (Moto wr850g) and everything seems to be working smoothly. It must be some settings on that one that are causing the problem, but I haven't been able to get it configured correctly. I noticed there were some IP conflicts with my wireless wanting to use the old Moto router IP and trying to assign my Mac an IP from that router. Does anyone know specifically what needs to be disabled on a router in bridge mode? Since I have a third party router there aren't any handy wizards that can configure it for me.
    Thanks again

How do I get the Time Capsule to run both 5GHz and 2.4GHz networks at the same time.

Thanks for digging out the facts.
You have a 1st Generation Time Capsule.
Your model can produce two bands....either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz....but not both simultaneously.
You would need a Generation 2, 3 or 4 Time Capsule for simultaneous dual band capability.

    thank you!

Your AirPort Express is already providing two separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but each band is using the same wireless network name.
This is the default setup for the AirPort Express, which is recommended for most users. The theory here is that devices will automatically connect to the best quality signal based on their capabilities and distance in relation to the AirPort Express.
It is possible to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band, and then "point" devices at that network to connect. Some users swear by this option.....(I am not one of them).... but you might want to give it a try to see how it works for you.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on the AirPort Express
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Click Wireless Options near the bottom of the next window
Enter a check mark next to 5 GHz Name.....which will automatically add "5 GHz" to the network name....so you can identify it
Click Save, then click Update and wait a full minute for the Express to restart
Now you will need to "point" your 5 GHz capable devices at the 5 GHz network name.  2.4 GHz devices will connect to your "other" network name.

I am using several Macs running Yosemite. I was recently “upgraded” to Xfinity’s new cable modem which can support both 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz networks at the same time. Actually I can connect to the internet over both with a satisfactory bump in speed for the Ghz. However when I connect to the 5Ghz the Time capsule disappears from the Airport Utility and claims to be Not Found. Is there something I have done wrong or just a Yosemite Teething Problem

First restart your mac and try again.
    It could be
that the router and the TC are interfering wirelessly with each other.
You can check this by pressing the option key while clicking on the wireless icon on your screen
    Open Wireless Diagnostics
    enter your user password
    Press CMD 4 then Scan
You will see all the wireless channels being used in your location and you can check if they are on the same channel
Make the SSID for the TC simple like MyTC
    Set 5Ghz to auto
    Update the TC
    Try again

    Hey everybody
Having som problems with my new eizo coloredge CE240W monitor, and my ATI 9600 XT graphics card.
When I boot the screen show the gray background with the apple logo, but when OS X (10.4.8) start loading the screen turns off, as if there is no signal.
I guess that this is a driver problem, but I cant find any driver on ATI's homepage that fixes the problem, do any of you have any idea what to do?

    Tis odd.
The reason I asked about the menu and selections is
that the CE240W specifications list the DVI-I 29 pin
x 2 input signals as "switchable".
I understand this as the ability to change input source, either signal 1 or 2 (both DVI inputs). I am able to select between the two, without any problem.
I am sure that you already checked and maybe I am
missing something but I don't see the 9600 XT listed
    here as a supported card:

I found the 9600 and 9600 SE but I dont find the 9600 XT, I believed that the 9600 indication included 9600 XT.

  • Mac Pro connects to the G network on my dual-band instead of N

Hi. My Mac Pro keeps connecting to the G network on my dual-band instead of N. I can confirm the network/router are fine because my Mini connects to the N network fine, on the correct channel and at 270 Mbit/s.
I'm using a NETGEAR RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Router. It is capable of simultaneous N and G networks as well as 2.4Ghz+5Ghz.
I've tried every channel and combo. Very occasionally the Mac Pro will register the N network 270 Mbit/s but will drop back to 54 Mbit/s.
More evidence, AP Grapher reports that it is using the G channel (eg 9) instead of the N channel (eg 43).
I also tried a Netgear DGN 2.4Ghz wireless-n router with the same result. That router only runs N, and only at 2.4Ghz, but Network utility reported that it was usually connected at 54 Mbit/s instead of 130 Mbit/s.
Combined with the fact that the Mac Mini works fine suggests to me that my network card is faulty.
Any suggestions before I lug this big beast back to the store for a new card?
    Thanks.

I believe I've solved the first problem. The router gave both networks the same SSID by default. I have now set them to
    myname-n
    myname-g
I can now choose either network and the link speed is reported as 270 Mbit/s or 54 Mbit/s respectively.
However, I can still only achieve peak transfer speeds of 2.8MB/sec and AP Grapher reports 41/270 Mbit/sec unless I switch to 2.4Ghz only, in which case I can achieve 52/130 and 4.3MB/sec, well below 270 Mbit/s or even 130.

  • Dual Radio WGB and LWAPP Controller

    Hallo everyone,
I have a wireless network managed by a 4402 controller with this sw version : 5.2.178.0
The client wants to add a stand alone wgb (cisco 1242 with an ios 12.4(21) ). The standalone ap associate to an LWAPP AP using the 5Ghz interface and propagate the same ssid at 2.4Ghz (I've also tried using a different ssid ). Actually the WGB is the only AP using that SSID at 2.4Ghz. As for the wired clients of the WGB I have no problems but if the client associate to the 2.4 Ghz SSID, I see it associated on the controller but no traffic from or to the client is allowed.
If for any case, the 5Ghz interface is resetted and the association betweeen the WGB and the controller is reformed, the 2.4Ghz client starts receiving and receiving traffic.
Any idea how to set things up from the the first association?
The wgb ssid is not set as infrastructure-client and the controller correclty identify it as a WGB client. In the same way the controller correclty see the 2.Ghz client like a wired client of the WGB but unless the association b.t.w the WGB and the controller is reset, no traffic reach the client.
I think that may be a problem related to how the IAPP protocol notify the presence of a client to WGB but I don't know how to work things out.. any idea?
    Thank you in advance!

The 3600 series Access Points can have either internal or external antennae.  You can tell by looking at the top of the AP.  If there are 4 antenna connections (one in each corner) then they are external antennae.
If you cannot get to the AP to check them physically, the antenna type is also denoted by the part number.
    AIR-CAP3602I-x-K9 has internal antennae
    AIR-CAP3602E-x-K9 has external antennae
The 3600 does have dual radios built in, operating in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency ranges.  However, for them to show up as such, you have to enable both radios on the AP.  You can do this either through the WebUI or the CLI.
The 802.11ac option is an external module that is attached to the underside of the 3600 AP.  Please find the datasheet for the module here:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps12859/ps13128/data_sheet_c78-727794.html
The 1552c Series access points are also dual-radio systems and should also have both radios turned on through the WebUI or CLI.  Note the quote " The Cisco Aironet 1552C/1552CU Outdoor Mesh Access Points are dual-radio systems with DOCSIS 3.0/EuroDOCSIS 3.0 (8x4 HFC) compliant cable modem for power and backhaul." taken from the datasheet for these APs found here:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/wireless/ps5679/ps11451/data_sheet_c78-641373.html
Cisco ships the APs with one Radio enabled and if you want the dual-radio functionality, you have to turn that on.  Once that is done, you should see the APs show up correctly in the WLC 5508.

  • How to set up time capsule to transmit in 5Ghz  and wireless router in 2.4ghz

I have a time capsule connected to my wireless router. After a 2 year use the 2.4 ghz wireless network transmitting from TC seems to have issues. I am trying to configure my TC to transmit in 5ghz and my wireless router (Cisco) in 2.4 ghz, but I cannot find such option
    Thank you in advance

I do not think there is any option to disable one of the radios on a TC - it is in dual simultaneous mode all the time with no way to alter that.
Whether or not your Cisco supports that will depend on the specific model - check that models manual or on Cisco's site if you can alter the radios, and if so, how.
I have a NetGear WNDR4500 (aka n900) and it is pretty simple to do on that - in the web configuration, as admin, you simple check or uncheck the box for each radio in order to turn them on/off.
P.S. What if you just assign a new SSID to the radio you want off, and simply never set up your devices to connect to it?  That should force them to connect to the other radio (assuming the device supports that frequency itself).

    Hi Phil Brayshaw-
What does the little white power light do? This should be helpful: About the Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) diagnostic LEDs
Although it sounds to me like you have tried most of the troubleshooting steps, this document is a good overall reference to address this particular problem: Power Mac G5: What to do if you see black, white, or no video at start up
Have you tried another monitor and/or double-checked your cable and its connections? If everything else is working as expected that would certainly be a major suspect.

  • Dual boot Windows and Linux?

I recently bought a T61, and will be taking a programming course.  One prof I spoke with said they ask us to use Unix tools, so one option is to dual boot linux and Windows.  I haven't decided yet whether I will keep Windows Ultimate, or go to XP for this.  But I was wondering how easy/hard is it to make this work, and what kind of steps need to be taken?   If you could point me towards any good tutorials/guides that would be appreciated too.
Also, I have never really used linux, so which version is best?  I will be needing it for programming, but also still want to do the basics like web surfing, music, dvd's, burning discs, etc.  I have an old copy of Ubuntu that I never used, but its probably about 4 years old.  Is this still acceptable or will I need something newer?

    Hi,
If it's just a couple of programming courses that you are going to take I suggest you'd try out VMware player:
    http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
You can get this software for free and since your system packs a lot of punch it will be able to run it smoothly without any hassle. I'm an engineering grad student and I have to do alot of programming. I've used VMware player before to do some software developement in Ubuntu when I didn't have enough HD to install dual boot but still couldn't do all my other stuff without XP.
VMware Ubuntu will need a bit of fiddling to get it work just right (USB devices, etc) but it shouldn't be harder than installing a dual boot (actually it is alot easier for my opinion). The only down side is that file sharing between VMware and Windows can be somewhat difficult. I used an external USB drive to share my files but you could always set up Samba to handle file sharing.
I hope this helps out with your decision.

  • Dual 2,5GHz G5 with startup problems

    Hi,
I have a Dual 2,5GHz (June 2004 model) G5 with the following problem:
When I try to turn it on, the screen sometimes stays dark. This is often the case the first time in the morning. Occasionally when this happens the front power LED is off. I have to power it off and try again.
After usually 2-3 tries I get it to boot, the LED is on, the system boots but freezes during boot (sometimes at the grey Apple logo) or it boots completely and freezes after a while of working with it.
I reseated the video card and also checked battery voltage (it's 3.6V as it should be) and even put in a new one just to be sure, but that didn't change anything. I also tried the PMU reset from time to time.
I suspected bad RAM and since I have 2 pairs of the original 2x256MB and 1 pair of newer 512MB modules I started testing RAM by using the memtest in single user mode. Now comes the weird thing:
Sometimes the G5 freezes during memtest, but most of the time it runs and passes all tests with OK. I always put in 1 pair of RAMs at a time (the first 2x256, then the other 2x256, then the 2x512) to rule out bad RAM. Since memtest never displayed an error as long as the machine did not freeze I think I ruled out bad RAM. They also seem to work fine in another G5 (same model).
Then I thought maybe some RAM slots on the logic board are defective and repeated the above tests with other slot pairs, but the outcome is still the same.
I am not quite sure, but I think the logic board went bad. Do you have any additional suggestions? Is it also possible that the CPUs are the culprit or can that be ruled out?
    Thanks
    Björn
PS: I forgot to mention that sometimes the startup chime does not play and (very rarely) it plays but gets cut off at the end.

    Hi DaddyPaycheck,
    I know that.
Sorry, but what I meant was that this problem has nothing to do with the hard disk not working or the OS on it being corrupted. The G5 doesn't even get to the point where booting comes into play. It hangs most of the time way before that. I am pretty sure that it's the logic board, but it could also be defective CPUs and I was hoping for someone with a similar problem to narrow it down.
    Björn
PS: Can it still be the power supply even though it's always powering on and turning on the fans? I never had the case that the G5 stayed completely "dead" which usually means the PS is defective.
