Networking imac and pc help!

Ok i just go my first mac today i love it except for the fact that i can get it networked with my pc's. Ive tried everything. It says the printer is added but when i try to print stuff to it it doenst work. Could some one tell me the exact steps that i need to do on both machines so i can share files are printers

Though initially written for users of MacOS 10.3, the excellent advice in the following two articles applies to users of 10.4 as well:
File sharing: http://www.efelix.co.uk/tech/3001.html
Printer sharing: http://www.efelix.co.uk/tech/3004.html
Note that most manufacturer's printer drivers for OS X do not support network printing to Windows shared printers (or network printers in general). As directed in the article above, you need to use the third-party printer driver Gimp-Print or HPIJS. The Gimp-Print drivers for many printer models are already built into MacOS 10.4, so you don't need to manually install Gimp-Print/HPIJS and Ghostscript to use these printers.

The way that Dropbox works is that it keeps a copy of all your files in your local Dropbox folder on your hard drive (which is, by default, directly under your home folder). Adding files to that folder will sync them to the Dropbox server.
You do of course have to download the Dropbox application to enable this (download link at the top right of http://dropbox.com ).

I'm getting an error message from Firefox that says, "Something is trying to trick Firefox into accepting an insecure update. Please contact your network provider and seek help." Do you know what is going on here--what this problem could be? (I do have the latest Firefox version already installed. I have previously received Firefox error messages that say "Firefox Update Failed." However, I already had the latest Firefox version installed when I received those error messages.)

Apparently this occurs when Firefox has problems with security certificates. There have been a few questions about this. I will try to get advice about this.
Apparently you are using Internet Explorer 9 (From your system details). Do you have Google Updater plugin installed on Firefox ?
(That been implicated in this sort of problem by one poster, and some users with the problem do have Google Updater, but some do not)

  • Networking iMac and PC

I have a wireless network with intel iMac running Leopard and Windows PC running Vista. I have sharing enabled on both iMac and Windows PC.
On the Windows PC iMac shared drives are visible and its possible to copy/update files etc.
The issue is that I cannot see any Windows PC shared drives on my iMac. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

Simple guide to Leopard/Windows Home Networking
Written by Intercepter121 and originally posted on the Apple Discussions here.
If your network complies to the minimum requirements described below you should be able to share resources without any need to enter commands in the terminal to modify configuration files in your mac.
    Requirements
    1. A decent router
    2. Mac Os x 10.5.1 installed on your macs
    3. Windows XP or Vista
    4. Number of network devices <10
    5. Some network printers or drives (NAS)
    6. A decent ISP offering a good DNS service
    <u>General Settings
If your router offers DHCP and any of the device has power saving features there is a risk that the IP addresses are renewed. This can be problematic as the devices keep changing IP addresses. As this is your network is strongly recommended to reserve IP addresses to the MAC (Machine Address Code) of the various devices so that they can power on and off and still keep the same IP.This simple suggestion will greatly improve the browsing of the local network.
Accessing Windows Resources from Leopard with no authentication
    Windows
    1. Check the settings of the PC and ensure the IP addresses on the local LAN are trusted
    2. Activate sharing on the desired devices ensuring the shares are read and write. If you use Vista ensure password protected sharing is disabled.
    3. Try to access the windows share from another windows computer if available to confirm no authentication is required
    MAC
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go back into system preferences network. On the tab location click edit locations. Duplicate Automatic and call the new location Home. Now select the Home location and go into Advanced-WINS. In the workgroup field enter the same value that is on the other windows computers for example HOME. Now press enter then go back to the main screen. Select Edit locations and delete the location automatic. Now edit your location Home and rename it Automatic. This workaround is a leopard bug described here.
    3. Give 5 minutes to allow all the other machines to broadcast their IP address and the other computers should appear on the left side of your finder window. You can now select the shares you want to connect. As no authentication is active if you are prompted with a user name just press OK.
The procedure to access a NAS is the same as above, just ensure permissions are set to files are read/write for anyone to avoid confusion.
NOTE: There is no need to activate SMB sharing if you don't want to allow the PC to read folders on your MAC
    Troubleshooting
After you have followed all the steps you don't see any windows PC.
Identify the IP address of the machine you want to connect. In finder select Option+K and enter SMB://IPADDRESS. If you can connect you have a name resolution problem. Go into your router configuration and ensure that the option DNS assigned by ISP is selected and you don't have services like Open DNS in use and fixed IP addresses in that field. Apply the changes and reboot the router. You should start seeing windows PC in finder shortly after.
Your ISP DNS service is poor and you must use Open DNS or similar
If you are forced to use services like open dns you have the risk that the router propagates the DNS servers to your machines. As the implementation of SAMBA in Leopard effectively blocks the MAC to be a master browser for performance reasons you end in a situation in which tiger machines connect and leopard ones don't see a single share. Let's fix it.
    1. Go into System Preferences->Network then advanced DNS if you see here the IP addresses of the open dns servers this is the case. Unfortunately you will be forced to change the hosts file.
2.Ensure you have reserved IP addresses to all your machines so that they always get the same IP.
    3. Now login into your mac as administrator and go into utilities=>terminal.
    4. Issue the following command sudo pico /etc/hosts
    5. Now scroll down and enter all the IP addresses and computer names of any device you want to browse
    6. Reboot your MAC
The windows devices will now appear in finder and you will be able to connect with Option+K.
You cannot access shares even entering the IP address
You have not reserved IP addresses to each machine. Go into your router LAN set up and make sure that is the case.
    Accessing Leopard resources from Windows
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go into System preferences->accounts and click on Guest flag the option Enable guest account to access shared folders
    3. Now into System preferences->sharing select file sharing and then options here flag SMB and select the user that has to be logged into the computer when the share has to be accessed. Ensure that the folder you want to share has read/write or whatever permissions you like it to have set for Everyone
You should now be able to see your MAC in the windows network resources and access the shared folder with a double click without any password request.
    Troubleshooting
You don't see any MACs from Windows
Check the firewall settings at the start of this post. Then go back to the Network configuration hit advanced and then TCPIP check is using DHCP and not a fixed address. Then check the sharing is set as above with SMB clicked. If SMB is not set you won't even see your mac from windows.
You see the MAC and the shared folders but you can't read or write on it
Ensure you have set the guest account to access shared folders. Then check on the sharing preferences that there is at least one folder with read permission for everyone. The classic case here is Dropbox that leopard sets as read and write for the user of the MAC but no access for other users. You try to click on drop box and receive an error but when you actually try to write a file you can do it. Check the permissions on the subfolders of the share as those permissions will prevail on the home shared folders
    FAQ
You may want to do more complicated things, but first ensure you can actually share files without security in place so you can identify the root cause of your possible problems
I want to password protect my windows shares: once you have done the relative set up in windows vista and ensured you can connect from another windows machine you will need to use user name and password of the Vista user to connect.
I want to password protect my MAC shared folders: Go into user account and disable guest access to shared folders is no shared folder has to be accessed without password otherwise leave it checked. Create a new user for sharing (better than giving away your password) so that this user only accesses the folders you want to share. In System preferences network select file sharing SMB and flag only the new user you have defined. Then go back to the folder section and set the permissions you like on the folder you want to share for this newly defined user.
    Good Luck

  • I bought 200GB of month space on iCloud to free space on my MacBook and iMac, and hopefully help increase their speed.......it didn't work.  Does anyone know why not?

I have a MacBook Pro with 496 of the 500 GB being filled mainly by movies, music and iPhoto.  I also have an iMac that is also almost completely full with the same things.  Sadly, I think the iTunes library and iPhoto library are mostly duplicated on both computers, which is the biggest waste of space one can imagine.  I tried backing my MacBook up to an external hard drive, with the plan of deleting all of iPhoto and iTunes after I connected to the iMac and could make sure all of my music and photos had transferred (even if duplicated, I would sort it out later), long story short, not enough memory on iMac to transfer all of it, and besides, I couldn't find it in the time machine to transfer the data from the MacBook to the iMac anyway.
So I got the genius idea to just buy 200 GB of monthly iCloud data, thinking I would transfer all of my iPhoto libraries and iTunes music and movies to this magical cloud in the sky, and be able to free up about 200+ GB of space on my hard drive.  Well, I have spent the better part of the day copying and pasting everything I wanted into the cloud drive...well some of what I wanted.  After 15Gb of data is loaded, I am now getting messages that I don't have the space to load anymore, but my storage says I have 185 GB of space left!!!!!.  I have deleted all of my movies from iTunes and my music media folder (in Finder) but yet, I have not freed up ANY space on my hard drive....it makes ZERO  sense!!!  Does anyone have any suggestions?  What I really want, is someone from the Genius Bar to come to my house and fix this mess.....I will pay...no matter what it cost.  I tried to call and set that up....can't even get a person on the phone.  I called Best Buy, they are willing to send someone from the Geek Squad...but I have my doubts that they are Apple savy....suggestions?
    Thanks so much!
    Stephanie

iCloud should still help you reduce some hard drive space. Just select "optimize" in the icloud tab in Mac Photo App preferences.
Granted, not the same as completely offloading your library to a back-up drive at your location.
    Good Luck!

  • Iphone and ipad can find network, iMac and macbook 10.8.2 cannot

Had a network fault. When fault was fixed, ipad/iphone & Dell studio xps laptop reconnected automatically. Imac 2012 and macbook 2010, 10.8.3, can see network but not connect automatically. Tried connecting to network and get message connection timeout has occurred.
    Got connection by;
    Open Network preferences
    Join other network
enter network name select - Security wpa2 personal
    enter network password
However - I need to do this after every sleep/reboot - is there a fix for this?
PS - I noted that I had previously been on WEP security setting and had real problems connecting to external devices consistently, such as epson wireless printer BX935FWD, and Western Digital My Book Live Duo. Since moving onto WPA2, these connection now work consistently, but macbook and imac always need to be forced to connect to network, in manner described above
Does anyone share a similar problem/managed to resolve network issues? - very frustrating.....must be an OSX issue as all other devices connect without issue.

I've managed to download 10.8.2 for my MBP Retina 13.3" but when I try and install I'm told that none of my discs are suitable i.e. Internal solid state drive with 370 GB available, or attached thunderbolt drive.   Meanwhile my iPhoto won't work. This has arisen because I migrated from an older MBP which was already running 10.8.2 and had latest iPhoto onto a factory fresh 10.8.1 machine.

  • Question about networking iMac and streaming video to TV

I have the 24" iMac 2.66GHz with 4 G ram. Currently using Motorola SBG900 (Docsis 2) cable modem & router to stream Comcast through house (another PC, iPhones, LG Blu Ray player/digital video streamer).
Recently acquired a Netgear Rangemax 3700 which is supposed to be the fastest current wireless router. Here are my questions:
    1) Can I just use the Motorola SBG900 as modem ONLY and run the ethernet out of it to the Netgear router (thus bypassing the router built into the SBG900). Will this accelerate the streaming of video to other receivers?
    2) Would I be better off with a Motorola 6120 Docsis 3 Cable modem feeding the Netgear router (even though my Comcast cable feed is Docsis 2, not 3)?
    3) Since my Comcast account is rated 10 Mbps max (though it sometimes goes up to 15 or so late at night) and I believe the existing Motorola SBG90 is rated at 54 Mbps, is the limiting factor the speed of my Comcast connection and all else doesn't matter? That is, is it impossible to speed up my streaming or download speed without a faster connection to the Internet?
    4) What kinds of connections are there that are faster than Comcast cable connections?
Basically, I don't want to waste money or time if I'm already at the maximum throughput available given my connection. If I can get marginal speed increases by adding new modem and router, that's fine. I'll do that.
    Thanks for your help.
PS: I owned and returned the Airport Extreme Base Station. It did not increase the speed of my connection or streaming, but then it tested very poorly at www.smallnetbuilder.com -- about half the speed of the Netgear Rangemax.

Can't help with Q 1 + 2, but here are some things to consider re:
+3) Since my Comcast account is rated 10 Mbps max (though it sometimes goes up to 15 or so late at night) and I believe the existing Motorola SBG90 is rated at 54 Mbps, is the limiting factor the speed of my Comcast connection and all else doesn't matter? That is, is it impossible to speed up my streaming or download speed without a faster connection to the Internet?+
My Comcast account is rated 15 Mbps and I never get that. I've done everything I can here including Cat 6 cables (instead of Cat 5), but the major problem/hangup in my case is: Comcast is using 20-year old buried cables from their hub (approx. 10 mi across town) to the neighborhoods here - those cables are "leftovers" from the company Comcast purchased the rights from. So, we not only have old cables, but the little boxes all over the neighborhood feed at least 6 - 10 homes each, so you are sharing the available bandwidth with the neighbors. And, whenever everyone seems to be online at the same time, my downloads slow down to a c r a w l (as slow or slower than dialup occasionally!).
So, unless you have a better/newer cable setup where you are, you need to keep that in mind; in that case, no matter what you do, you are at the mercy of Comcast's equipment and your neighbors' usage.
    4) The only one I know of is FioS (fiber optic).

  • Networking IMac and MacBook Pro

I'm having problems connecting my MacBook Pro with my iMac. The iMac can see and communicate with the MBP but not the other way around. If I try to connect to the iMac I get a message saying that "The server “iMac” is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally." If I try and view the iMac screen remotely I get a recursive view of the MBP screen.
This happened under Leopard, the problem disappeared under Snow Leopard but has now resurfaced. I have remote management and file sharing set up on both machines.
    I'd really appreciate a solution.
    Thanks
    Ally.

I have the same issue, posted here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10356586#10356586
I tried your solution, but it still doesn't work. I was having intermittent problems as well... the shared folder was there sometimes, not other times. Then it seemed that only certain enclosed items were not being shared. Now I can't see it at all...
    Any other suggestions?

  • "Something is trying to trick Firefox into accepting an insecure update. Please contact your network provider and seek help."

This message appears in regular intervals. I think it is intended to prevent Man-in-the-middle-attacks that want to foist you a rogue Firefox update.
In my company the "Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway" with HTTPS inspection is used. This HTTPS inspection is done by installing a local (company-controlled) Certification Authority in the browser on the users computer and then performing a de/encryption of the SSL-stream on the proxy server.
But as Firefox not only verifies the certificate of the update server, but also the Issuer of the certificate, the update is rejected because of a possible Man-In-The-Middle-attack. In case of the "Microsoft Forefront TMG" this is an intended MITM-attack ...
Is there any possibility to change the expected certificate chain of the update server in Mozilla Firefox?

    To access the preferences:
<br> Type '''about:config''' into the url bar and hit enter. Click on the ''I'll be Careful'' button. Then type '''app.update.certs.1.issuerName''' in the filter or search box. Then double-click the pref or right-click > Modify and fill in the new value. Then close Firefox to save the changes.
To add the other 2 preferences (app.update.certs.3.commonName & app.update.certs.3.issuerName) that are not there by default, right-click on one of the prefs inside the the about:config window. Then choose '''New > String'''. Then fill in your custom values in the boxes that pop up for each preference. Make sure to close Firefox to save the changes.
