NETWORKING MACS--How do we network between 2 cities?

...for purposes of Web Site Design and accessing files.
We have a small web design company in New York. My staff person is moving to New Jersey and we both want to access our web site files from one hard drive, located here in New York, so she can continue to work for our company while now relocating to New Jersey.
We are using G5's/hardware, and Dreamweaver and Photoshop.
Timbuktu does not work for our purposes. Does anyone know how my staff person in New Jersey can log into our information here directly connecting to our hard drive to make changes and updates to files?
We thought about her just downloading the files, making changes and then reuploading them again to the Internet; however, the problem we encounter is that as soon as the files are uploaded using FETCH, the Dreamweaver/HTML file turns into an I/E (Internet Explorer) file, and the Photoshop file, turns into a Quicktime file. This makes it so that if we download the files from the Internet to make changes that way, we can then no longer double click on them from the Photoshop and Dreamweaver programs, because they are no longer Photoshop and Dreamweaver files.
The only way to access files after they have been uploaded, and then downloaded again, is to do a FILE > OPEN while you are in Dreamweaver or Photoshop, and go down through the levels of files to open the file in that particular program. This takes forever when you are working on 100 or more files per day. It also does not remember the folder you are in, so if you go to open a second file using the FILE > OPEN procedure, it starts back at the top; does not go to the folder you were just in when you opened the previous file. This process is very tedious and cumbersome, and does not work in production environment.
Any suggestions on what work would work well for her to access the files in our office here in New York, while she is in New Jersey? We have tried every Mac Support Rep listed on the Apple Site within 50 miles and no one can come up with anything for us.
Thanks for anyone's suggestions or help!

A VPN is certainly the way to go here. The issue is going to be bandwidth at each site.
The latency and bandwidth is not going to be practical for the user to edit files directly on the server, but they should be able to download files to their system, work on them, then upload them back to the server - you'll just need to watch out for people in both locations trying to work on the same files at the same time.
In any case you need to examine the network connectivity availability at each end, bearing in mind that the upload speed is more relevant here - for the New Jersey user, the upload speed at the office is going to be critical when it comes to then downloading files, and their local upload speed is going to be critical when it comes up them uploading back to New York.
For example, if the New Jersey user is on a DSL, they might have something like 3mpbs download and 384kbps upload - this means they can only upload files to New York at 384kpbs (about 40KB/sec). For a 1mb file that will take 25 seconds. That's probably OK for web files, but will be excruciating for multi-megabyte Photoshop files.

  • Wish to create network between PC and Mac

Hi, I wish to make a network between my iMac G5 and my PC running XP Pro. As soon as I plugged in the pc into my router I instantly got internet on my pc. So how do I make a network to exchange files, and share printers, and dvd drives. One of the things I want to do is use Popcorn 2 to burn a DVD but since I don't have a burner on my mac I want it to burn on my Windows PC (with the mac software).

    Welcome to the discussions!
"I want it to burn on my Windows PC (with the mac software)."
You can't use the Mac's software to burn a DVD on your PC. You can create a disk image, then bring that over to your PC on the network and burn it on the PC, but that will require the software to be on the PC for that. I think that is what you meant anyway, but I wanted to make sure.
Networking your Mac and PC is really not that hard to do. The Apple guides are not as clear as they could be, so start with Joel Shoemaker and Felix. They have some excellent step by step instructions and are very easy to follow.
For printer sharing, you might also need third party, open source drivers. Depending on the connection - on the PC or the Mac - and the printer brand they can be found in any number of places.
Give those pages a look and if you have anything specific that comes up, be sure to post back here and we can walk you through it.

  • Network between mac os 10.6.1 and windows 7

    HI guys
I asking about networking between mac os 10.6.1 and windows 7
    on windows 7, I opened file,printer sharing on (workgroup)homegroup.
on mac os 10.6.1, finder->go->computer. It show Macintosh HD & Network, click on Network, there is nothing there.
The only I can do is.... finder->go->connect to server (input smb://192.168.xxx.xxx and connect)
After that, on finder->go->computer->network is showing up 192.168.xxx.xxx
MY QUESTION IS HOW I CAN SEE WINDOWS (workgroup)HOMEGROUP ON MAC OS 10.6.1 BEFORE CONNECTED TO 192.168.XXX.XXX BY HAND?
    Thank you!

I think you are asking, in effect, why you can't see your smb shares in "Shared" in the sidebar of a finder window? Often Sno does not make that connection automatically, and one must connect via smb://IpAddress (or computer network name). Once you do so, if you keep the connection active, then the Win7 machine is likely to be found under Shared eventually. The only way I have found to keep shares showning under Shared for an extended period is to keep all pertinent machines from sleeping over the period of expected access.

  • Help! Making a Wireless Network between a PC and Mac and more.

I am trying to make a network between my powerbook and my fiance's pc, so we can share printers. I have an Airport Express and I bought her a Netgear Wireless PCI card. The PCI card is installed and has located the Aiport network. How do I get it to see the printer attached? Is Bonjour necessary? I'm downloading it via the Mac and then transferring the file by Zip because for some reason it wasn't downloading properly on the PC.
Also of note, we use dial-up to connect to the net so this network is again just to share the printers we have, and maybe files.
Printer sharing: I have my HP deskjet connected via a 4-port hub to my Airport. My computer recognizes the HP but when I connected the Lexmark 2250 it couldn't see it at all. Why is that? What can I do to fix it? I have the latest Lexmark Drivers.
How do I get my Mac to see the PC for file transferring, etc? I've been searching through apple's site for information and nothing is really helping me. I am gonna explode.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.
    Seth

Ok I got the PC to see my HP 940c wirelessly using Bonjour. However, I still can't get the Lexmark 2250 to show up on either the mac or pc wirelessly when connected to the hub? Is using a 4-port hub connected to the Airport express just not going to cut it for making a multiple printer hub?
I'd really like to do this plus make an network between the two computers.

  • Im trying a home network between Mac and Win 7, but its very slow

    Hi guys,
ive searched for this for the last couple of days, but i havent found my sollution yet.
I have been trying to setup a network between my macbook and win7, and it works...i can move data.
The problem is that it is VERY slow. (2MB/sec max in the monitor app, it takes 6 minutes to transfer 1GB)
    This is my setup:
Macbook 2011 ML 10.8 (I use WiFi to the router)
    Zyxel P-2601HN-F1
Dell PC (connected thru ethernet cable to the router)
The ethernet adapter of the Dell is 192.168.1.37 and its a new cabel.
So i type in CMD-K, then smb://192.168.1.37 and connect with user and pass
I tried all the stuff i read here, like changing channels, but it stays really slow.
The crazy part is when i do both in Wifi, its almost as fast as with cable...and i DO use different ips in the smb connection
Maybe im going wired all over the studio and my house, but i would be awesome if this would work at least at 10/20MB/s, thats almost usb stick speed.
    please help,
    wendel

So i bought the Airport Extreme and hooked up all my hd's on the usb port...
the wireles upload speed from macbook to hd's is 5-6MB/s which is a lot better (40-48Mbit/s)
in the end i think its a protocol & adapter settings issue, with Windows using smb2, and apple using some old protocol from the 90's in ML 10.8.x
Also, there are a lot of (for me) complicated network adapter settings one has to know, before getting great transfer speeds between Win and OSX...so its easy to mess it up in Windows 7.
I read that Mavericks switched to smb2 too...so let's wait for all my software to be mavericks compatible and see how fast that will be with my Airport Extreme!

  • Creating network between Mac and Linux

Hello guys! I need to set up network between my iMac and Ubuntu linux. iMac is connected in internet by Airport and Fon Wifi Router witch is connected in router which is connected to adsl -modem. My pc is connected directly to router. Both computers have access to internet. Is there any easy solutions to share files with mac and linux? I don't need any webservers etc, I just want to share files.
Other question related to this, why is my mac's ip address like 192.168... and linux ip addrress is 84.250...?
    Thanks allready!

Though I'm not newbie with computers, I'm really confused becouse I haven't set up network like this never before.
Not a problem, no worry... we all know something somebody else doesn't and vice versa.
My linux says that my DHCP -IP is 193.210.18.18, is that related to this in any way?
Yes, if the Mac had an IP of 193.210.18.x, (but not 18 for x), then connection would be simple, but I think we must have two devices passing out IPs. What is the Mac's IP again?

Do you have any advice where I could start looking from the right IP of my linux?

I'm not sure if its even configurable.

  • Network between Vista and Mac

i'm trying to create a network between a Vista desktop and my Macbook Pro for files and printer sharing.
after lots work with setting on Vista, I now can enter in MacbookPro folders from Vista. the problem is by Mac side: i can't find the printer connect on Vista (and shared), and the icon of PC don't appear on Finder, so i can't enter on Vista's folders. the problem with file sharing is strange, cause only one time, today, icon of PC was appeared on Finder (come back to Stop of Mac)..... i've traied with the same method another times, without success...
I don't now what to do. I hope someone help me

I have limited knowledge but will try to help you as I have battled through this myself recently...You will lose nothing if you give it a try!
In System Preferences open the Sharing folder. Check the boxes to enable 'File' & 'Printer' Sharing. In the same open window select 'Options'.. Here I have Share files and folders using AFB and (importantly) also Share files and folders using SMB. - 'on' should be checked and 'Account' should i believe be the name assigned to your Macbook. - select 'Done' and then also close the 'sharing' window in sys preferences to take you back to the desktop.
In 'Finder' select the 'Go' option in the toolbar. Select connect to server from the drop down menu. You now need to enter the server address which will be the name of your Vista Pc - enter as follows: smb://(your vista name).. you may have to also enter the password for the Vista machine if it is configured in this way. ( It has been a while since I completed this so a little rusty here!)
If you have entered the correct information when you hit 'Connect', your Macbook should find your Vista desktop that has previously not been appearing in your Macbook 'Sharing' section - this was the issue that I was originally experiencing. You should now see the Vista machine in the Sharing section of your Macbook.
If this has been successful to here... This will enable access to try to solve the printer sharing problem? I think this one is beyond me as there are so many different configurations/installation options dependent upon the type of printer and network configurations.
It is possible to configure your Macbook to automatically find your Vista machine at startup if it is not found as a matter of course, which I perceive to be the case here... Try this to automate connection at startup..
Go to Sys Preferences and sect 'Accounts' you may have to enter your password to initiate changes. Making the assumption that you are connected now to your Vista machine and it is showing in the 'Shared' section of 'Finder'- select the 'Login Items' option and then select the '+' under where it states 'To hide an application when you log in etc etc.
From the window that opens you will now select your Vista machine from the left hand folders menu. when done click 'Add' and close windows to return to your desktop. Re-start the Macbook to check whether the Vista machine will now load to the Mac automatically at startup.
I hope this works for you as it has for me - The non discovery of the vista machine by the Mac was driving me round the bend

  • How Can we force the Hyper-V Replica to use a dedicated network between two hyper-v hosts?

    Dear Team,
How can we force Hyper-V Replica to use a dedicated network between two hyper-v hosts?
For live migration, we can choose the desired network in Hyper-V Manager (Use these IP addresses for Live Migration).
I have two 10G adapters teamed together, the virtual switch is created on top as converged network with several vNICs (MangementOS, LiveMigratrion, Backup, etc...)
Each network is set with a specific VLAN to isolate the traffic.
The two Hyper-V hosts are on the same LAN and domain.
    Thank you.
    Regards,

I have accomplished this by using a DNS pointer specifying an IP address on that dedicated network. That will force traffic done that network.

  • Can I set up a home network between my mac and a windows based laptop?

Can I set up a homenetwork between my mac and a windows based laptop?

The router is te network hub.
I have a network between my Linux box and my PC  and my MBP because they are both hooked up the the same router.  All you need is the "192.168.1.x" address of the destination box and the software needed for the type of conection (VNC, SSH, etc).
What helps is to set up "static routing" for all boxes so the IP address does not change.  I have set up my Linux box to be 192.168.1.100 always, using the MAC (the ethernet abbreviation MAC, not Macintosh) in the router's "static routing" table.
Exactly which screens you need in the router depends on te router make and the internal management screens.  The router maker should have either online (if they offer it past a 1 year from purchase) or online help found through Google.  A MAC address is a set of 6 hexadecimal number separated by ":" -- an example (which I imagine will match *some* MAC *somewhere* is "6A:13:F2:72:E4:A1".

  • How do i set a peer to peer network between my iMac and windows machines?

I'm trying to connect my MacBook Pro to Wifi using internet sharing
    Why?
Just connect the MacBook to the same internet as your iMac.
    MacBook > Wi-Fi router > Internet.
You are connected to the internet with your iMac.
    iMac > Wi-Fi router > Internet
Why do you want to go MacBook (via Wi-Fi)  > iMac > Wi-Fi router > Internet?

  • No 'network' between devices on wireless network (Internet is ok)

Yesterday I bought a new router (Linksys WRT300N) which was a replacement from a dodgy Belkin-N router which kind of died. After setting up the wireless network, I get Internet OK on all my devices, but there is no networking between the devices (i.e. the Macbook Pro can't see the other map, or the apple TV). I'm sure there is a very simple explanation/setting, but I'm really struggling to find it!!
I'm connected to the Internet via a cable modem (through Virgin Media - was Telewest) which feeds the router. (DHCP enabled)
I've got the following devices set up on the wireless network:
MacBook Pro, iBook, PS3, 360, a PC and an Apple TV.
Because I can't see the other devices (e.g. mac's can't see each others sharing) I can't see the AppleTV to sync it anymore.
I'm at a loss at what else to try (I'm pretty experienced at IT, although not the dark arts of networks).
I have filesharing on, the 5353 UDP port open (iTunes works ok), firewall off on the router, all the IP addresses of the devices appear to be on the same Subnet. It all worked fine on the old router :-/
Any ideas very much welcome... I've read a lot of the Apple guides and nothing seems to point out something I haven't tried. The appletv DID appear in the device list earlier, but I'm not sure why/how and it went again. The Apple TV is on the wireless network fine, connects to U-Tube etc.

FIXED... there was an option, hidden away in the default advanced wireless settings that blocked communications between computers on the network... argh... defaulted to ON (Setting is called AP Isolation and allows communication with router but not each other...)
    Phew...

Is there any chance of being able to set up and use something such as
the Apple Remote Desktop in these computers? Sure, there is a matter
of setting up the computer on the far end, including any update to the OS
and having the Apple Remote Desktop client side ready and able.
And then having (owning) the ARD software within the computer you have
there while traveling so as to contact and control the remote computer.
This should be capable of allowing you to move files between the Macs
but may be cumbersome without planning ahead; before traveling away.
