New 500 GB DVR

Will the new 500 GB DVR be able to tape more than 2 shows at once?
It is a pain to be watching one live show and not be able to record 2 shows on different networks.
This is the main reason I wanted more capacity.

The only company that has more than two tuners is ATT U-verse. From what I've seen, they've had issues with the 4 tuner setup and I have a feeling that is why most other companies do not follow suit. The 2 tuner setup is a well established and for the most part, trouble free system. The only other way to get more than two tuners is to go 3rd party (the Ceton Cable card system for example)

  • New 500 GB DVR Multi Room Not working!

I received the new 500 GB DVR this past Friday and set it up over the weekend. I'm having issues with viewing the new content on the new DVR with other STBs.
I've tried rebooting all the boxes and unplug each one but still get the same message that There was error connecting to the DVR STB. It's almost like the boxes are trying to still access the previous DVR. I tried to submit to Verizon Support on Twitter and it's been 3 days without hearing back if they had a solution. They tell me the same cut and paste message they give everyone to DM them on Twitter and here is the link to the form but then you don't hear back at all.
Has anyone else experienced issues with the new 500 GB DVR and Multi Room access?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I switched from a 7216 MR-DVR to a 7232 and had tech support switch the MR feature to the new box, and have no problems. The STBs and DVRs talk to each other on their own little MoCA network. COAX or splitter issues can cause problems. Router not involved. I have MRDVR running and all routing functions are turned off on the Actiontec, and the the WAN ports are not even connected. The Actiontec is bridge LAN to MoCA. My router is a Linux box. The Actiontec does filter STB broadcast traffic from my LAN. It sees no MoCA traffic except for VOD and guide updates. All other UDP broadcast traffic is blocked on the bridge.
The hub errors people were seeing on the older 1.7 img were not HUB as in router related. The hub acts as the master on the MoCA network. Looking at the STB diagnostic menu D16 for "Connected Home" my DVR shows as the hub and is verified by the MAC address my Linux box assigns an IP address to. If you are having Multi Room DVR issues I can almost guarantee that it is not a router issue. Check and make sure you have good quality RG-6 coax and the proper splitter(s). Make sure there is no line loss or interference between the boxes. Also make sure Multi Room is assigned properly only to the DVR wanting to be the Multi Room DVR. It can not be assigned to more than one DVR. Now with the 1.9 image the rules may change, but I am not sure. Right now it is my understanding that only one DVR can be the HUB. Now that may be changing, we will need to wait and see. I believe it will change.
Now back to removing the old DVR and having Multi Room Enabled on your new DVR. You may want to have both DVRs connected so the feature can be disabled on the old DVR and enabled on the new. If you do not do this and reconnect the old DVR you may end up with two trying to act as HUBs. May not work well with 1.8. Not saying I know for sure, and my assumptions are only based on observations. But when I had Multi Room moved from old to new, both my DVRs were connected, and my system works great.

  • Verizon Online Chat sez the new 500 GB DVR is not available in Plano, TX, does this sound right?

I just got off chat with Verizon about ordering FiOS TV and 3 x DVRs. They told me the high capacity DVR is still not available in my area (Plano, TX). Is anyone in my area using the new hi-capacity DVR ???
    Thanks!

It is available in Plano because we got ours. After receiving the email that we could upgrade we went into the store and exchanged ours out.

  • Will current HD DVRs have ext. drive capability when 1.9 rolls out or ONLY the new 500 GB DVR box?

Got the email about the $40 upgrade to the 500 GB Motorola box.  I realize that once 1.9 is FINALLY rolled out, the box will have eSATA capability to tack on a supplemental HD.  My question is, can I just not pay their $40 for the new box and instead wait until 1.9 is rolled out, and then be able to use the currently useless USB port on my current silver Motorola 160 GB HD box to hook up a 1TB drive that I can get for less than the $40 upgrade fee?
Are they are any OTHER advantages to the new box over the existing ones (feature and capability wise...I don't care about recycled materials, less energy usage, etc)?

All the 7xxx series DVRs will support an external drive.  There are no plans to utilize the USB port - too slow to support MRDVR.
The 7232 has more memory (not just the disk) and is smaller, black, and supposed to use less energy (I know you said you don't care, but I mention it anyway).

  • Verizon sent email - new 500 GB DVR is ready click this icon

When i open the Verizon email to click here, your wait is over for the new 500GB DVR, nothing happens and it times out.  I cant find anything on my account about it.  So I called yesterday and they said it could be an internal problem they would get back to me.  Still not working and no response.  Has anyone figured out where and how to get this DVR?

  • Switching to FIOS, want the new high-capacity DVR. How can I guarantee getting one?

After 12 years I have to say goodbye to Dish because my old oaks are getting too tall and too wide and I don't have a clean line of sight...so I'm switching to FiOS.  I've gotten used to the best DVR in the industry, and I understand that there are new high capacity DVRs for FiOS that rival the Dish DVR's capacity.  How can I guarantee that when I order FiOS I'll get one?

You can't . Its whatever is put on the truck that morning. HOWEVER, you can do what I did and refuse the install. My installer was nice enough to go back to the office and get one for me. It is outgrageous to offer the older smaller equipment to new customers.

  • What to do with two new 500 GB HD's

I have a Mac G5 dual 1.8 with 2.5 GB DDR SDRAM, factory installed 160GB HD. I recently installed a second internal Seagate 500 GB HD.
I had a WD external 500GB HD that died in 6 months (yes, I fortunately backed up all info on DVD), which they are replacing.
I have Super Duper! and am wondering the best way to utilize the two 500GB HD's since I would like to have all info backed up on two drives and also use the external as backup boot up drive.
Do I use the 160GB for only running programs? do I partition both the Internal and external 500GB (each a 160/340 split and mirror them)? Can SuperDuper! handle this kind of backup?
I hope this makes sense since I am having a confusing time trying to figure what to do. thanks!

Hi! Here's what I would probably do:
    1. Clone the 160 gig drive to the 500 internal and use it as the boot
    drive.
    2. Clone the new 500 boot drive to the 500 external for a bootbale
backup of the entire drive. I would reclone about once a month or
    longer depending on useage.
    3. Once I was sure everything was working ok I'd erase the 160 and then
partition it with a small partition for an "emergency" boot drive
with a clean install of the OS on it with a copy of all utilities
such as Diskwarrior and TechtoolPro and a second partition of the
remaining space to which I would use SuperDuper to back up the user
or documents, pictures, music folder every day.
This way you have two bootable backups from with to repair any damaged directory and besides the main clone on the external you also have a backup of your documents and/or user folder every day. My problem with setting SuperDuper to clone the drive every day is that if the OS becomes unstable you may end up backing up and unstable system which could yield both systems unstable with little way to recover except a clean install.

If you need to extract the drive's content you can remove it and install it in a $10 USB enclosure. It will be readable by any recent Mac.

  • New Customer with DVR Capacity questions

I just ordered FIOS and was promised by the sales person that came to my door that a dvr that would hold 300 standard recording hours and 88 HD recording hours.  I called verizon to verify this and I can not get a straight answer.  I see on the verizon website the 2 different type dvrs from Motorola.  The 160 GB drive and the 500 GB drive.  I read many  threads and even the 500 GB disk will not meet the numbers quoted to me by the sales person.  The only way I know to get the recording hours promised is to add an external SATA drive to the DVR.
I have called Verizon 2 times and can not get any answers to this question.  They can not tell me the type dvr that will arrive on install day.  They can only say that I will get a multi room dvr and a standard dvr.  I need 2 of these dvrs since my wife sometimes records 4 shows at the same time.  I also tried to contact the Verizon installer to get answers and no response.
Can anyone clarify any of this for me before I cancel my order ?
    Thanks

Probably not.  At some point in the future when Verizon begins rolling out something called "Verizon Media Center" equipment, users will be able to get expanded capabilities.  Unfortunately that time isn't here yet so you have fewer options.
Usually current initial installs cannot specify the exact model device, but only that the devices delivered will meet the order specifications.  In other words, you will receive a DVR, but it may not be the latest or largest model.  It depends on a number of factors such as what's available at the dispatch location, what's available on the truck, etc.  Sounds pretty haphazard I guess, but it's really not all that bad.  Besides, you just may end up getting the latest, largest whatever.  It's a roll of the dice, but my personal view after about a year of FiOS is that the technology and performance are worth whatever "teething" issues one encounters.  Others of course may disagree.
Things change once you actually have the equipment in your home.  Then you have the ability to switch, trade up, etc., depending on your needs.  Note that there often is some sort of fee associated with changing certain gear, especially if it's not defective.
It would be nice if each new order provided brand new gear with the latest and largest specifications, but that simply is not practical and is not standard industry practice.  Sorry if you are not happy with this news, but it's the best I can offer based on the prevailing situation..

  • A mini review of FiOS TV and their new QIP-7232 DVR

FiOS TV picture quality is stunning. No compression artifacts at all from what I can tell.
The 7232 is pretty good but not excellent. I have the 7232 and a Tivo HD XL. IMHO the Tivo is considerably better but I see lots of room for improvement with the 7232.
Pros and Cons of the 7232.
    Remote
Nice and responsive. Like that I can turn the TV on and off. Doesn't allow for channel changing just input changing. Not a massive issue but a shame as we need another remote.
It's probably difficult to update, but I find the remote a bit too complicated and the buttons poorly positioned. Shame more buttons don't light up to help find buttons when the room is dark.
    Guide
I may have missed it but it would be great if it remembered your favorite settings. I see the favorite button but IMO the guide button should take you there directly.
    Guide Titles
Almost excellent but unfortunately titles are cropped when they go beyond 30 or so characters. They should allow wrapping to a second line to allow 60 or so characters.
    Extended Guide Titles
I'm noticing some weird information on some shows. English soccer is particularly bad. For example, today's showing of Arsenal versus Blackburn has a title of The Gunners (Arsenal) rallied for a 2-2 draw with West Ham on March 19. So the title describes Arsenal's previous result. Quite confusing.
    Speed
Seems speedy enough. I was ready for some lagging but overall impressed.
    Storage
Fine but IMHO not adequate for a whole house DVR recording in HD. Look forward to seeing the external hard drive capability.
    Bugs
I'm seeing some issues viewing at the end of recordings. Seems that fast forward and next don't work at the end of the recording. A bit annoying. Hopefully a fix can be made.
    No "wishlist".
Not a deal breaker but would be nice to see in a software upgrade. Both the Tivo and DirecTV boxes have this feature and I find it very useful as I forget to check back in every few weeks for new shows.
    No jump to mark/end.
I hear this is coming with 1.9.  That is great. Look forward to seeing it. I like the idea of pushing and holding the "next" button to skip to the end.
Again the PQ is stunning. I'm blown away with it. I got used to DirecTV compressing some channels and it is great to see true uncompressed images. I love it. Very happy customer overall. If Verizon can continue to improve their DVR they are onto a major winner.
Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I'd be happy to beta test anything.

Re: your comment about the Guide button. You can easily set the Guide button to display your choice of Favorites. Here is a link to a thread (from two years ago, but still accurate) that has a link to a document I wrote that will tell you how to set it up:

  • Caller ID on TV not displaying after 500 GB DVR upgrade

As the title states, I upgraded to the new 500GB DVR and added a new HD box (both the new model Motorolas) and the caller id on TV stopped working.  It shows that they are both active (went through reactiviation process), but it continues to be displayed on the TV in our bedroom as that is still on the older, gray HD box??  Also, it has been almost a week since I've activated the feature so it's beyond the 48 hour waiting period it may take and I've tried rebooting a few times.  Anyone have this similar issue when upgraded to the new Motorola boxes?
    Thanks!
    Mike

  • 500 GB DVR...*still* haven't received message about ordering it, been *WEEKS* now

I've put myself on the list to be notified when it will be available, and still haven't gotten email to upgrade.  I signed up right when it first became available to do so, and this was several weeks now.  Anyone know why it's taking so long, and when I'll be notified?!
I live in Central New York (VHO-15A) if that helps, and I've been installed since November of 2009, so VZ is giving me the ole stink finger to me because I'm not a new install....anyone in the region have luck getting one?

a guy in huntington station NY got his email notification.   try to re-apply, or call up some of the stores and see if they have them yet.  don't exchange, just go get a new DVR, and then you can return your old one whenever you are done watching the content.

  • 500 GB DVR Upgrade Transition

Is it possible to upgrade to the new 500GB multi room DVR without losing the programs I have already recorded on my old multi room DVR?  Can I run both multiroom DVR's in my home for a short period of time while I transition from one to another?  How have others handled this transition?

If you can wait for 1.9, and it gets installed on your existing DVR (big IF if you currently have an 6xxx series box), and you have (or will buy) an eSATA drive, you should be able to copy your existing programs to that drive (assuming it has that capability). Then you could replace the DVR and just connect the drive to the new unit.
    ABSOLUTELY NOT!!
There is no copy capability from internal to external (or vice versa) and additionally the external drives programs are locked to the DVR they were recorded on.  Moving it to another DVR (or PC) will not work - PERIOD.

  • Is it really necessary for me to replace my STB 7100 series with this new multi-room DVR?

I just wanted to know other people's opinions on this because so far, I'm leaving my existing setup alone.  I was looking on line to see what upgrades may be available to me and the multi-room DVR is one of them, which now I see is not only available to just new customers.
But here are some of the reasons for my hesitance about switching:
    - I never record anything and I never will.  People say "never say never" but that's one "never" statement that I make pretty confidently.
    - I only have one TV in my house, just in the living room.
So I guess my question is, "What would I gain, if anything?"  Or would getting that new DVR be good preparation for further upgrades in the TV Guide Display?
As long as I can watch my TV and all the basics are working as they should, that's really all that matters to me.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Based on your comments you don't need a DVR.
However if you were to decide to get one you only should get a HD DVR.  The multi-room is a software feature, not different hardware, that can be enable if you ever setup an additional stb for another room.  The multi-room feature is an additional $4 over the price of the DVR.

  • GOT A NEW MULTI ROOM DVR , CANT RECORD FROM MY OTHER STB'S

SO I RECENTLY EXCHANGED MY MULTIROOM DVR SINCE IT WAS MAKING ALOT OF NOISE. I GOT A NEW ONE THE OTHER DAY AND SET IT UP WORKS FINE. MY ISSUES IS THAT I CANNOT RECORD SHOWS FROM MY OTHER STB'S. I HIT THE RECORD BUTTON AND SAYS "MULTIROOM DVR ALERT, DVR NOT RESPONDING". I SPOKE WITH VERIZON AND THEY TOLD ME I CANNOT DO THAT I DONT HAVE THAT FUNCTION, I TOLD HER THAT MUST BE A JOKE SINCE I WAS DOING IT ON MY OTHER BOXES BEFORE I SWITCHED OUT MY DVR. ANY IDEAS GUYS? I REFRESHED THE DEVICE LIST AND MADE SURE EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED AND RESET ALL BOXES AND ROUTER.....THANKS

On your DVR, have you refreshed via Menu>Customer Support>Top Support Tools>Scroll down to "Auto-fix for MRDVR"?
Any chance that during the exchange process VZ inadvertantly turned off your MRDVR service.
