New Aluminum Mac Display
I have a MacBook Pro and a new iMac. The Text on the iMac is a little bit blurry compared to the text in the MacBook Pro (Core Dual 1). Any suggestions would be appreciated. I tried to switch off the zoom feature but it did not improve the text rendering. Although I could not disable zooming using the mouse. That is whatever the zooming feature is set to in system preferences when I press the command button and use the mouse wheel the zooming works.

The physical design of LCD panels mean that they only look really sharp when working in their 'native' resolution.
Ensure that you have your iMac's display set to the native resolution.
menu > System Preferences... > Displays
20" iMac - 1680 x 1050

New 2012 Mac mini having issues in connecting to third party Monitors. Connected my mac mini to a 27" LG monitor. Text looks blurred. Tried connecting to the monitor using 3 options. 1) mini port to HDMI, then HDMI cable to LG monitor. 2) Mini port to VGA, then VGA cable to monitor 3) HDMI port on mini mac to DVI-D cable then DVI to DVI cable... Why do you use always 2 cables? There's a lot that can go wrong.
1.) Hardware:
- Use only one cable, best an HDMI->HDMI cable. It doesn't need to be an expensive one, they've proven to be no worse than those "esoteric", expensive ones.
- Set the monitor to the HDMI input.
- The modes you are listing are only "picture modes" changing color/brightness/contrast settings, not resolution or the likes, so pick the one you like best later, or enter your own settings under Custom.
2.) OS X:
- Usually the Mac detects the screen itself and chooses the best settings, so by default you need to do nothing than make a proper hardware connection to get a decent image.
- However, there have been issues with new Mac Minis and particularly their HDMI ports. But reportedly they have been fixed with a software update. So, launch the App Store and check under Updates if there is one for you to install. If so, do it; otherwise you should be good to go.
- If you require, go to System Preferences -> Displays. In the Dispaly tab, by default, "Best for display" should be selected, and that is typically true. If you want, select "Scaled" and 1920x1080, plus a frequency from the list (where higher is usually better, but just pick the one that works best for you). If you can't see a change to the better, you best go back to "Best for display".
- If you are not happy with the colors on your screen, you'll find eventually more than one choice in the Color tab, though your particular screen should be in the list and its Display Profile should get you the best result. (Double-check picture modes on your display: if you're far off there, you won't make it much better with the Mac's settings). -

I'm new to Macs, have a question about a 20" cinema display
Hi, I just got a used G5 with a 20" display. I am new to Macs, just trying to figure a few things out. The display is great, but when it comes to text some letters are not as sharp as I want them to be, plus the monitor is giving me a headache/eye strain - perhaps because of the frequency ( I did ot find a way to change it ). I'm running it at 1680x1050 which looks the sharpest but can it be better? How can I achieve sharper text and avoid the eye strain?

g5 Mac OS X (10.4.9)You might try turning the brightness down...like way down...when reading text. LCD monitors are much brighter than CRT monitors of the past. The out-of-box configuration is usually way too bright for comfortable text use.
You can always turn the brightness back up when you want to look at photos and that sort of thing. The monitor I have at work is set to "0" brightness and it's still plenty bright. -
New (aluminum) plus an old (clear) display together?
Hi I currently have a dual 2gig powermac G5 with and older (clear) 20 inch display.
If I got a new display(the new aluminum ones), can I link them together?
thanksIf you mean can they be used in a dual display configuration, yes. The older display would connect to the ADC port on your video card and the new one to the DVI port. The USB and FW ports on the "clear" display will be powered via the ADC connector. To use the ports on the Alum. display, you will have to connect the breakout cables to computer ports.

I'm new to Mac's and I find the display's just slightly too small. I'd like to increase the size of my display for all my programs. Is there a single setting that I can change as a default setting?
You can drop the resolution a little, but it makes everything blurry.
OS X isn't as friendly like Windows is to give some UI adjustment, one of many major complaints about the platform that has gone unheeded for years now.
As a lifelong Mac user who's eyes are going due to age, I'm really liking Windows 7 more and more every day.
If you use Firefox, NoSquint and Theme Font & Size Changer add-ons, with a nice persona that makes better contrast, tweak the FF toolbars, you can at least make your web surfing tolerable on Mac's.
Also you can set a Control key in System Preferences > Universal Access plus a scroll wheel mouse, if you need to zoom in/out certain areas of OS X, however for a pernament UI scale solution there is none that's practical, unless you have a large room, a projector and a smooth wall.
A larger monitor won't work up close neither, however dropping the resolution and sitting back a bit might sharpen the images a bit.
The UI really needs to be adjustable and it's not. -
Mac Mini won't discover new Aluminum wireless keyboard
I have a new aluminum wireless keyboard that my mac mini running 10.5.8 will not discover (although new iMac 21.5 running 10.6.1 will). The Apple website says to use "Aluminum Keyboard Software Update 2.0" with the keyboard but I can't find that anywhere. I could find the "BluetoothFirmwareUpdate2.0.1" but it said my computer did not need that and wouldn't install it. Do I need that Aluminum Keyboard Software Update 2.0 and where can I find it (I looked all over the download site)? A link would be great!
I tried to locate that same software too. It is not yet available. I have the same issue probably. The bluetooth just does not recognise the keyboard. Although normal type pad is usable. Hot keys are a mess.. Any info would be very much appreciated.

Can I use 2 displays when I connect a 1920x1080 display through Thunderbolt to the 27 cinema display when it´s connected to the all new 13" Mac Book Air with thunderbolt?
Thank you, I have read that I could daisy chain the HD RAID enclosure on one of the thunderbolt ports with another monitor, if the monitor were at the end of the chain, but I do not know if the other port would still simultaneously support yet another external display at the same time.

New aluminum Macbook and S-Video
It have come to the conclusion that the new MacBook's and MacBook Pro's can not output to S-video. I have tired the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI and then the Apple DVI to Video but no luck, the two do not connect as the Mini DisplayPort to DVI is missing 4 pin holes. I have tired Mini DisplayPort to VGA and then a VGA to s-video adapter but no luck, the MacBook did not even see a second display.
Is there any hope to achieve my goal? I need s-video out for work and will have to exchange the computer for a Black MacBook if the new computer can not output to s-video.

I, and many others, have been looking for a way to output video (composite and s-video) from the NEW Macbooks and MacBook Pro's sporting the Mini DisplayPort since Apple as yet to release such adapter. I use my computer to output video (s-video) for digital slide shows and presentations. If our new aluminum MacBook could not meet this requirement back to the store it would go.
While searching the web for a adapter, converter or whatever could help get video out of the new MacBook I quickly learned ($10 later) that a simple VGA to s-video cable would not work.

I soon came across the PC to Video EZ. It is sold at several online retailers but I finaly decided to buy it from NewEgg.com (links at bottom of post). NewEgg is retailer I knew I could trust and get fast shipping from. I ordered the converter box on Friday and it arrived today (Monday) with standard shipping!
Bottom line, the PC to Video EZ from GrandTec outputs video (both composite and s-video) at equal quality to Apple's own video adapters used on previous (pre-DisplayPort) computers. I, owning a MacBook Pro with DVI to video adapter, could not tell the difference.
The device itself is small. It is nothing you would complain about carrying around and it gets the job done.

The back of the unit has two VGA ports, one in and one out. You can use the VGA out port as a pass through so you can still have your computer connected to a VGA monitor while outputting to video. A feature I will never use but it is still nice to have, especially for desktops.
Also on the back is the video ("yellow" composite) and s-video out.

On the right side of the unit you will find a place to plug in the power adapter. Good news, its powered by USB. Bad news, the thing needs to be powered at all... More bad news, the unit does not use a standard USB cable. You better not loose the one that comes in the box! At least there are no power bricks to lug around and a simple USB to wall power adapter (like the one used with iPod or the iPhone) should also power the device. My testing showed that power is required.

Installing new aluminum keyboard
I'm due to receive a new aluminum keyboard this afternoon and I've got a Mac Pro running 10.4.10.
Questions:
1.Should I apply the new 1.2 keyboard update prior to swapping my old keyboard for the new or install the update and then swap the keyboards.
2. With the new keyboard do I need to re-run the bootcamp 1.4 update or will the update (1.4, already installed) pick the new keyboard up for my bootcamp/xp drive?"I just tried this. Go into System Preferences -> Display. Turn off Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes. Now move the Brightness slider right and left, left and right. Turn on Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes. When I changed it from far left to right then left again it was ok."

thanks Toni"Better" depends on what the screen is used for. IPS screens are definitely better than TN screens for graphics and photo work, as they are more color-accurate and consistent. TN screens, however, generally have faster response times (they are the screens used in LCD televisions) so they are better for watching movies and gaming. That aside, however, people are complaining that the specific make and model of the screens Apple chose for the aluminum iMacs (TN for the 20" and S-IPS for the 24") are of especially poor quality as they are subject to very apparent color gradients either from top to bottom (20") or left to right (24") that make accurate photo-editing impossible. One can argue that people who need to do serious photo work could choose a MacPro with a Cinema Display, but one could also argue that an iMac costing upwards of $2000 or more should have a decent screen in it which is at least as good as the screens Apple put into the white iMacs. After all, Apple bills the new iMac as an "upgrade" over the previous white iMac model, but how can it be when the screen is so inferior? So if you need high screen quality, but can sacrifice RAM capacity and speed, then the white iMac is your choice, but if you're looking for RAM capacity and high speed at the expense of display quality, then choose an aluminum iMac. It's just a shame that Apple has put its customers in such a compromising position by not offering a machine with both.

Theoretically, Thunderbolt devices that only transfer video and audio should work with Mini DisplayPort MacBooks like yours, but it's not the case of the Thunderbolt Display. Its firmware doesn't allow it to be used with non-Thunderbolt Macs, so you can't use the Thunderbolt Display with the Mid 2010 MacBook Pro.
Instead, you have to look for another screen, or you can get an adapter and connect the MacBook Pro to a TV -
New to mac and iphoto, questions about photo structure & organization
I bought a new Macbook Pro a couple of days ago and am still figuring things out. I wasn't displeased with windows...I just decided to try a mac anyway, So far, I adore it except for one thing, the pictures.
I spent hours researching whether to download and use picasa 3 for mac or iphoto. I decided on picasa....and now I've changed my mind. (Mostly because I tried to take pictures of the moon tonight, and they looked great in camera, but Picasa could only pick up a black screen whearas iphoto actually saw and defined the moon- and with the editing software on the two, the picasa auto-edit looked like a picture that was created in microsoft paint, and iphoto came out with a beautifully contrasted photo).
Now that I decided to use iphoto, I have been researching how to switch and still seem to have a lot of questions. (I've poked around numerous forums but have found conflicting answers on different sites).
1) I organize my pictures by folders with the month and year. I know iphoto organizes events, which it seems to determine based on photo similarity. Will my photo structure still appear in finder -> pictures?
2) Is it possible to stop iphoto from organizing my pictures and just trust me on what I want?
3) All of my friends and family use PCs, and there is a chance that due to financial concerns, when I eventually replace my macbook pro (far in the future) I could switch to a pc. Does iphoto make transferring pictures more difficult? (If I understand correctly, it does not change the photo file, a jpeg is still a jpeg but I want to be sure)
4) I do not want iphoto to duplicate all of the pictures already in my library....if I import from finder-users-pictures, will it simply use those, or duplicate all 150gb worth of pictures?
5) Any other tips for someone completely new to macs and iphoto?
6) This is very silly, but how do I uninstall picasa (I know how to uninstall on a windows but want to make sure I do things correctly on my mac!)
Also, just a "bonus"- regarding events vs. files I create, will iphoto create events within the program but leave my file structure in the library it imports from alone? If I use finder to go to where I store my photos, will I still see my file structure regardless of what iphoto does?(Does that make sense? I'm having a hard time trying to describe it)
I apologize if this question is foolish or misplaced- I did read many other posts but didn't see the answers I was looking for.Your questions are neither foolish nor misplaced.
The first thing I strongly suggest is that you make a trial iPhoto Library. Import 100 or 200 pics and explore. Iphoto isn't right for everybody, and if you're going to use it you will need to rethink things a little.

A: Events are based entirely on Date and Time not on 'photo similarity' You can set the interval for what makes an Event in the iPhoto Preferences: iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> General Pane: Autosplit into Events... And select from the drop down menu.
Will my photo structure still appear in finder -> pictures?
Yes or no, depending... iPhoto can run as a Referenced or Managed Library. In the former case, yes you files will be visible in the Finder, in the latter case they won't.
Note that Referenced or Managed refers +only to file storage+ It offers no extra functionality, it does nothing at all. App like iPhoto are your go-to app for your photos. If you use it, then you never access the photos via the Finder. Ever. It's always via iPhoto or the many, many hooks into the OS that it has.
I'll detail more on Referenced v Managed below.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Iphoto does basic date and time organisation by default. You can change it, you can change the location of the photos in Events, merge them and then using the other tools available - Albums, Smart Albums, Faces, Places etc you can organise your photos whatever way you want.
But what do you mean by pictures. There is a distinction between Photos - the image of your child holding his dog - and files: A Jpeg is just a file. Iphoto is designed for you to +forget about the jpeg+ and get on with the interesting bit: the pics of your younger and his pet.

A Jpeg is a Jpeg is a Jpeg. If you migrate to another app or an entire OS you can export the photos plus any and all metadata you've added to the Finder and move it on. (Caveat: You cannot export Faces. There is no agreed standard on any system for exchanging this info.)
4) I do not want iphoto to duplicate all of the pictures already in my library....if I import from finder-users-pictures, will it simply use those, or duplicate all 150gb worth of pictures?
It can do either. And this brings me back to the Referenced v Managed discussion above. By default, iPhoto will Manage the files, that is, it will copy them into the Library. You can choose not to, but I strongly recommend that you don't:
*How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
*What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
*Some things to consider:*
1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
*If you want to edit the photo in another application:*
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

For someone inexperienced with Macs and inexperienced with iPhoto I cannot stress enough that Managed Library is the way to go. I understand there is comfort in seeing all those folders. But inside the Library that's all there is: all those folders, stored so that an inexperienced user can't grub things up!
The iPhoto Library Folder is a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. Want to see inside?
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
Now close that window and forget about it.
So, once you've imported your photos to iPhoto in a Managed Library, the surplus duplicates are +your folders+. Of course, in time, trash them to get back the wasted disk space. But don't do it today or tomorrow. There's no hurry. When you feel confident that you understand how iPhoto is working and that's it's working for you, theat's the time to reclaim the space.
I organize my pictures by folders with the month and year.
If you want to duplicate your Folder Tree in iPhoto:
Start at the bottom of the hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Album Heading in iPhoto. The pics will be imported and an Album of the same name created.
You can then create the Enclosing Folders in the iPhoto Window (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album to it. Folders can contain other Folders (Nested Folders) and Albums.
However, is your folder system date based? Then this form of organisation is a bit pointless in iPhoto when Smart Albums or the Calendar tool (Click on the wee magnifying glass in the Search Box) mean you can find the photos taken on any day, month or year at a click. With Smart Albums it's easy to find photos from specific range - say, June 3 to August 25, 2009 etc.
If your folder system is theme based - Xmas pics, Birthday pics etc, then you'll find Keywords are much more flexible, and can be used in conjunction with other criteria for making Smart Albums and searches.
6) This is very silly, but how do I uninstall picasa (I know how to uninstall on a windows but want to make sure I do things correctly on my mac!)
Drag the app to the trash and empty it.
