New aluminum Macbook and S-Video

New aluminum Macbook and S-Video
It have come to the conclusion that the new MacBook's and MacBook Pro's can not output to S-video. I have tired the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI and then the Apple DVI to Video but no luck, the two do not connect as the Mini DisplayPort to DVI is missing 4 pin holes. I have tired Mini DisplayPort to VGA and then a VGA to s-video adapter but no luck, the MacBook did not even see a second display.
Is there any hope to achieve my goal? I need s-video out for work and will have to exchange the computer for a Black MacBook if the new computer can not output to s-video.
Any thoughts?

_*It works!*_

I, and many others, have been looking for a way to output video (composite and s-video) from the NEW Macbooks and MacBook Pro's sporting the Mini DisplayPort since Apple as yet to release such adapter. I use my computer to output video (s-video) for digital slide shows and presentations. If our new aluminum MacBook could not meet this requirement back to the store it would go.
While searching the web for a adapter, converter or whatever could help get video out of the new MacBook I quickly learned ($10 later) that a simple VGA to s-video cable would not work.

*NO GOOD!*
I soon came across the PC to Video EZ. It is sold at several online retailers but I finaly decided to buy it from NewEgg.com (links at bottom of post). NewEgg is retailer I knew I could trust and get fast shipping from. I ordered the converter box on Friday and it arrived today (Monday) with standard shipping!
Bottom line, the PC to Video EZ from GrandTec outputs video (both composite and s-video) at equal quality to Apple's own video adapters used on previous (pre-DisplayPort) computers. I, owning a MacBook Pro with DVI to video adapter, could not tell the difference.
The device itself is small. It is nothing you would complain about carrying around and it gets the job done.

The back of the unit has two VGA ports, one in and one out. You can use the VGA out port as a pass through so you can still have your computer connected to a VGA monitor while outputting to video. A feature I will never use but it is still nice to have, especially for desktops.
Also on the back is the video ("yellow" composite) and s-video out.

On the right side of the unit you will find a place to plug in the power adapter. Good news, its powered by USB. Bad news, the thing needs to be powered at all... More bad news, the unit does not use a standard USB cable. You better not loose the one that comes in the box! At least there are no power bricks to lug around and a simple USB to wall power adapter (like the one used with iPod or the iPhone) should also power the device. My testing showed that power is required.

The unit comes with every cable you would need which is a huge plus! Included in the box is a short VGA cable (3 feet, which is perfect), a s-video cable and a composite video cable.

Although not as neat as an Apple Mini DisplayPort to video adapter would be it does get the job done.

Pros:
* Power supplied from USB ~NO BULKY EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY!
* No software required! (works with Mac or Windows or any OS!)

  • New to MacBook and wireless, What to do?

Help, I am new to laptops and the wireless connection. I do not even know where to begin. How do I get wireless service? Do I need to buy any other special hardware to get connected? Do I have to subscribe to a wirless provider? If so, which is a good one?
As you can see I really do not know where to begin. Please help.
    Any Suggestions

if you're that much of a beginner (you don't even have internet access at your house?), i would suggest you get your local cable company come out and install high speed internet into your house and while they're at it, have them set up a wireless router. a wireless router is a piece of equipment that takes the internet and broadcasts it throughout your home. after you've gotten those two things set up, your macbook will recognize the wireless router automatically and you're online.
you're going to need a bit more help than what a forum can give you. good luck!

  • New KM2M install and no video?

I just installed a new retail KM2M Combo-L board in an Antec case with a retail 2100+ processor. I'm using 256MB of Crucial PC133. When I try to power up all the fans work, the keyboard seems to work but no video at all. I've hooked up two monitors to it and no video on either. The HP monitor will flash a message on the screen to check video cable if you turn it on with cable not connected to computer. When I turn this motherboard on the monitor regesters that the cable is hooked up but that the computer is not "on".  When turning on power sometimes I get a beep sometimes I don't. Sometimes the reset button works, sometimes it doesn't. Is this likely memory, processor, bad motherboard, short circuit? I can figure out how to test different sticks of memory but how to I check for the other stuff? What memory is recommended for this board? I know MSI say Kingston but apparently there is some contoversy about that.

I haven't hear that controversy about Kingston but I can tell that many of the problems posted in this forum involves Crucial memory. They are considered almost crap. Also you could be having problems with the power source, but to know more about, please give us a harware complete list includding Amps. P.S. gives to 3.3v. 5v. and 12v. and its brand.  8)

  • New to Mac and to video editing...need some guidance, please

I've decided to make the switch and ordered a new 3Ghz 24" iMac. I chose a 1TB HD and 4G of RAM.
I want to do some photo and video editing (nothing professional, simply vacation photos and video). I'll be purchasing an HD camcorder later this year to replace my current one (non-HD). I currently have about 5000 photos and about 50 hours of unedited DV on DV tapes to begin to work with.
Any suggestions on the following would be much appreciated:
    1. Back-up: Should I use a 1GB Time Capsule or a 1 GB GTECH drive with Time Machine? I should mention that I plan on purchasing a MB or MBP later this year. Can I use a GTech HD as a NAS-like drive for both the iMac and the notebook?
    2. Should I partition the internal HD?
    3. Should I use a 'scratch disk' for video editing? If so, any suggestions for a particular size or model?
    4. Any suggestions for ease of transfer of my data from my PC (photos, iTunes library, mail, IE favorites, etc.)?
    5. Anything else you would suggest for a new Mac user?
Thanks very much for the help!!!

    Hi there.
First, a couple of websites to help you on your way (and Welcome to the Mac!)
    http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/
    And also
    http://www.apple.com/support/leopard/
Now, as for your questions, these are just IMHO:
Backup - get BOTH the capsule and a separate HD. If you can only get one, personally I would get the non-TB disk so that I can drag the video files that I want onto it. the Capsule might backup other stuff (and slowly compared to the straight drive; get a FW 800 drive if you can, if not then FW 400 at least). I also think you meant TB not GB! Just make sure the DISK is from a good vendor (Seagate, Hitachi or Western Digital).
Partition - Nope; wastes space; you need contiguous space from my experience. Only do that if you really need to run Windows via Boot Camp (not recommended to run Windows at all!)
Scratch disk is absolutely recommended. Get the largest size one you can afford and separate out this from your backup disk. (Worst case, use a bit of the scratch disk as your backup, but also keep the same work files on your main hard disk so you at least have a physical duplicate somewhere). Yup, hard disks are gonna add up!
The above websites have some tips on transferring content from PCs; generally you can just burn stuff onto DVD and import them onto the Mac. That's pretty straight forward.
Suggestions IMHO - forget the Mighty Mouse and get another quality two button mouse. Also consider a Kensington Trackball. Get AppleCare warranty for all your hardware (for peace of mind). Triple check that your camcorder will be supported by iMovie '08. It might not be by Final Cut but at least you can get the files from iMovie into Final Cut. But Final Cut does support quite a lot of them already.
Introduce 10 other Windows people to the Mac. (This is what we do).
    Cheers!

  • New unibody macbook and WD passport harddrive

I'm going to buy a unibody macbook in the new year, will a Western digital passport hardrive that is powered from the USB port owrk with it?
    Thanks

I'm the same and can confirm the USB port has the power to run the drive when the Macbook's running off mains power, although I don't know if that applies when it's on battery power.

  • Two new issues: Shutdown and No Video Out

For some reason I have begun to experience two problems. The first is that after the last update, I can no longer send video out to my projector. The second is that when I close my laptop it reboots instead of going to sleep. At first I thought it was a low battery, but I just experienced it while plugged in. Any ideas?

  • New aluminum iMac and firewire drive

My school recently placed an order for a lab of iMacs and found out yesterday that we will be getting the new model (20 inch).
We had been using old G4 towers with Final Cut Express and external firewire 400 drives.
Since the new iMac will only have a single firewire 400 port can anyone suggest our best options for capture/playback via firewire 400 and also using our existing firewire 400/USB 2.0 external drives? Is there a firewire 800 to 400 adapter that will allow us to use the faster port as a second 400 port?
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

I think the adapter for converting FW800 to FW400 is the best option in your case. In my case, my iBook only has one FW400 port and I opted for a Belkin FW Hub to allow capture from my camera to my FW400 external HD. I've heard this is not ideal, but it works for me. Would love to get a new iMac one day.
I believe the reason FW hubs are not recommended is because you can end up splitting the bandwidth. Essentially you might end up with FW200 if two FW400 devices are hooked up to the hub. Anybody else know?

  • New to MacBook and need so guidence

    Hi Everyone!
I am gettinga mac book (early 2008) and wanted to know so information from you all if possible.  It has 4GB of memory, which is the most you can get I hear, and it has a 120GB hard drive.  Can that be upgraded?  Intel Core 2 Duo is the processor-is that fast?? Can you upgrade a processor?? And I know that it is running OS 10.7.3 Lion.  It already has installed Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 and Adobe Creative Suite5 Master Collection (Photoshop, Dreamweaver) so I hear I will be able to manipulate pictures, movies, and stuff.
I want this lap top for me and not have to share it with hubby and kids.  I know that I will be using it for pictures and itunes and office work for myself.  So if you all can tell me if this will be a good "Newbie Mac" computer to get.
    Thanks Everyone!

You can do the hard drive yourself if you want, OWC has on-line videos of the install.
You could also consider an external drive instead...I bought one of OWC's Mercury Eliite Pro drives in September, 2 TB that I partitioned into 1.5 TB for Time Machine backups and 500 GB for a clone of the operating system and more storage space.  Disk Utility, found in the Applications/Utilities folder, is very simple and easy to use.
If you go that route, just ask and many on here would be glad to walk you through it.
When I bought mine, it was something less than $200 for the drive, and just plugs right in.
So, one more thing for you to think about, it's all about more toys, more toys

  • So I bought the 2.0 aluminum macbook and...

I really like it, however I'm kinda wishing I would've spent the extra money for the 2.4 and the backlit keyboard. Do you think they'd waive the 10% stocking fee if I decided to return it and upgrade to the 2.4? Thanks for any advice.

Well I'm glad it worked out for you. I tried explaining my position on it, that it was an exchange and not a return but she kept just saying no she couldn't do anything for me. I'm a little miffed seeing as how I've read on other posts that they did in fact waive the fee for people doing the exact same thing.
I guess next time I'll just go to best buy where I'd have 30 days to return it, no fees, no problem. It's a shame because I do enjoy going to the apple store.

  • Can I use a G4 to get raw video footage to a no-firewire aluminum MacBook?

    Hi -
I recently purchased a new aluminum MacBook 2.4Ghz and was shocked to discover the lack of a firewire port. Ok, I should have read the specs more closely before ordering, but I never would have imagined this port being removed (other than from the specialized MacBook Air). As others on this board have said, what were they thinking?!
So I have some questions about downloading raw video footage from a firewire camcorder (forgive any ignorance on my part, I'm new to camcorders and digital movie editing--I've never used iMovie). My goal is basically editing home movies.
I have an old G4 tower (1.5Ghz, 1GB RAM). I also have an external firewire/USB drive. The tower will not run iMovie '08 because the processor is too slow. The iLife 08 disc refuses to even load iMovie on this machine.
I haven't purchased a camcorder yet. I spent a lot of time researching affordable camcorders and had settled on a well-reviewed Canon miniDV, which of course, is firewire. This camera does not come with any software.
Would it work to connect the camera to my G4 via firewire, download the raw footage to my external drive connected to the G4, then move the external drive over to the MacBook, connect it to the MacBook via USB, then import the raw footage to iMovie for editing? I realize the copying over USB would be very slow. I assume I need some type of software for downloading the raw footage to the G4. Since iMovie won't run and the camera has no software, is there some type of utility or shareware that lets you capture raw footage?
Is there a better way I can use my G4 to get raw footage from a firewire camera, and then on to my MacBook? Or will this work at all?
I see that there are a few USB camcorders out there, but they seem to be expensive or don't receive very good reviews, so I'd like to go with the firewire Canon.
Thanks very much for the help with this frustrating issue

Well, never mind. I'm returning the MacBook and buying a previous generation MacBook Pro, which ends up being about $200 more.
Solves my problem, but many folks can't afford the Pro. I'll be commenting at Apple customer feedback about the lack of firewire on the new MacBook.
    Thanks for reading the post.

  • New MacBook and The Infinitely Spinning Beach Ball: Anybody Else?

I wonder if I'm the only MacBook owner having this experience, or if there might be some company in my misery?
I purchased a new Aluminum MacBook on Nov.14. This one is the high-end, 2.4GHz model with 4GB of RAM and currently running OSX 10.5.5.
I have in the past few days (or week, or so) encountered what appears to be an intermittent performance failure. I will, for example, be in Apple Mail: Open a new message to compose, and as soon as I click on the open window, the beach balls starts spinning... and continues to spin for a minute or two. Typically, when this starts happening, when I get the cursor back I click again, and the beachball resumes spinning.
This will also happen in Firefox, or, as it did yesterday, even accessing items in the upper-right menu bar. Suspecting an impending hard-drive failure, I clicked the Time Capsule icon in the menu to see when I got my last backup, and instead of getting Time Capsule, I got... the spinning beach ball of death.
The most difficult thing about this dilemma is that it appears to be intermittent. I took the MacBook to the dealer that sold it to me yesterday, was unable to replicate the issues. Everything worked fine in the store. Came home, problem returned for about 10 or 15 minutes, then it went away and the computer performed normally until I closed the lid to go out for the evening.
Then this morning I opened the lid again and.... spinning beach balls for a total of about 17 minutes. And now, again, it appears to be working fine.
While I was at the store, we ran a disc verify in disk utility, and it returned the message "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK."
This is the worst kind of problem -- the intermittent one. I suspect something in the computer itself, in the believe that hardware issues are more likely to be intermittent than software issues; I could be wrong about that, I dunno.
All I do know is that I can have maddening periods when I can't do anything with the computer, and then, just as suddenly, everything goes back to normal.
So I wonder if there might be anything in the circuitry in these new MacBooks that might be causing a similar problem for others. Or is this my unique cross to bear until the thing goes completely south?
    Thanks,
    --PS

Have you tried running the diagnostics from the Leopard disc? If not, give it a go to see what it finds. To run it, boot while holding the "d" key (with Leopard disc in ofcourse).
Haven't tried that, I did not know that was on the disk. I'll run it, how long might it take? What sort of tests does it run, what sort of results should I expect?
Another thing to try is reset the SMC.
Following the link you provided suggests there might be some things in the SMC that could be causing my problems. Should I do that before or after I run the diagnostics? Would the diagnostics tell me if that's something I need to do?
If still nothing... perhaps a reinstall of Leopard.
I call that the "Vietnam Solution" -- destroying the village in order to save it. I thought was done with that sort of thing when I abandoned PCs and Windows. Not a desirable outcome.
As a last resort, you might consider trying a new hard drive. A failing drive can cause theses intermittent delays.
That was my initial thought, too. Are there any diagnostics I can run besides dick utility to determine the integrity of the hard drive? Do the diagnostics on the Leopard install disk do that?
    Thanks,

  • Macbook Aluminum vs. New White Macbook?

I just bought a brand new Aluminum Macbook, which is no longer in stores. I spent $1300. I believe I got ripped off. Do you suggest I keep this Macbook or return it and buy the new white Macbook? I do like the aluminum design more then the white though. lol. Suggestions or Recommendations are appreciated =]
    Here are the specs:
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB DDR3 memory
    250GB hard drive1
    8x double-layer SuperDrive

You can get a NEW Macbook PRO for $1149. It has a FireWire port too.
Do you suggest I keep this Macbook or return it and buy the new white Macbook?
No. Return it and buy the new Macbook Pro.
The white Macbook has no FireWire port.

  • Which imacs and apple displays connect to late 2008 aluminum macbook 13 inch for use as external display?

I have a late 2008 13 inch aluminum macbook and want to purchase an iMac computer or apple display to use as an external display for it while I'm at my desk.
I can afford up to $700 for sure, maybe up to $1000 and would like one that has built in camera and audio if possible.
I'd like to know what my options are as it seems not all are compatible.
I'll mostly be doing web browsing and photo editing in Aperture.
Also wondering if it's possible to sync 2 computers so that when you make changes on one it reflects the changes in the other. Like you can with certain apps like Evernote.
    Thank you for your help!

Yes he is right, Snow Leopard is your first step.  Once you have that you can upgrade directly to Mountain Lion if memory serves me correct.  Some people were saying that Lion was a little sluggish with the aluminum MacBook but that Mountain Lion was great.  Personally I had Lion on it also and didn't think it ran badly.  10.6 was still with Rosetta (the program that ran power pc apps) but this is dropped on 10.7 and up.  Up until just the other day I still had the stock 2 gb of ram.  The firmware update happens with Snow Leopard and up so it should come up as a software update.  If not, it can be done manually as well.  The ram I purchased was 60 bucks for the 8 gb.  For Lion and Mountain Lion I have to agree with the above reply, that it would run alot better with at least 4 gb.  If you run that many apps at once then you are going to want as much ram as you can get.  If you add a solid state drive you will be amazed at the difference it will make too.
