New computer- photos dont show up from hard drive

Hi,
I got a new computer and when I opened iphoto with my hard drive connected, it says the pictures are there, but they don't show up. I have a screen full of exclamtion points.
Help?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That "!" indicates that iPhoto has lost the path to the original file, i.e. a damaged database file in the library. Run the three fixes below in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:

1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open Photo window
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

I'm having the same problem. I have my main Library on a WXP machine and a new W7 laptop. My iphone 4 sees the library from the W7 machine, but neither the laptop nor the iphone see the big library on the WXP machine. I have just received a new laptop. I connected my portable hard drive on which i had backed up my itunes library from my old pc. On the new computer i used the "add folder to library" function in itunes. All the songs from my hard drive appear in the iTunes library on my new laptop, but when i try to play the songs, iTunes asks me to locate each individual song file on my portable hard drive. i have tried using the consolidate library function but this hasn't done anything. I don't want to have to "locate file" for each of the thousands of tracks i have stored on my portable hard drive.

Opening Lightroom for first time from new computer where library is on external hard drive

There has to be an easy way to open my lightroom library from my new computer where the library is already on an external hard drive because that's where I was told to put it to make this whole process easy. Well, I can't find any information on how to do this and I'd rather not mess up my photos!

Could you be specific about the problem you are having? What happens when you try?
Also please be sure to state your operating system and what version of Lightroom.

If anyone is able to give me some advice I'd really appreciate it. I have seen similar issues on here and tried uninstalling then re-installing the driver which seemed to fix the similar issue on someone's Windows 7 system but it doesn't seem
to have worked for me. I also tried using the usb 2 drive rather than the usb 3.
I have a new cube laptop with Windows 8 (which I'm not used to yet at all) and am trying to access the files from the Maxtor hard-drive from my old pc. The hard-drive does not show up under file explorer but seems to appear in device manager. The
laptop makes noises occasionally as if it is detecting some hardware but not showing it.
Can anyone suggest a fix?

Could the external hard drive be shown in the
disk management?
Or take a look at the format of that hard drive(list disks) with diskpart command:

Check if the format is NTFS.

New Computer, Old iPod, Songs saved to hard drive

The first computer my iTunes was saved on had to be taken off, so I saved everything, including the iTunes to a hard drive. I transferred all the songs onto the new computer through the hard drive to the new iTunes I downloaded on the second computer. I was able to sync the songs in my iPod with a little difficulty, but I managed to do it. The only problem is that I'm not able to take off any songs on my iPod now. Everything for my iPod is blocked, but not my iTunes.

Are all the songs on the iPod greyed out? Grey text when you look at the content and a lock symbol at the bottom of the screen just indicates that the iPod is set to sync automatically with iTunes. If you want to delete songs directly from the iPod you need to change the update setting to "manually manage songs and videos". The text will change from grey to black and everything will be directly accessible through iTunes: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone

Lightroom 5: "Remove Photo" will not delete from hard drive

I just discovered that when I am using the "Remove photo" feature from the library, while the photo is removed from the catalog and "deleted", it remains on my external hard drive. Is there a fix to this issue? I did go to my external drive and create a file and then delete it. I had read in other forums that this allowed Lightroom to find the correct place. This did not solve my problem.

Yes I do.
After I posted, I tried it again in a different file (I organize my photos
on my external drive by month and year). In the month of August file, I
can delete in Lightroom and it deletes from my hard drive. It appears to
only be happening in my September file, at least as far as I can tell now.
I created all of my file folders 2 months ago, so it isn't something I
just did.
Any thoughts?

IPhoto 08 - Loosing photos, iPhoto automatically deletes from hard drive!

I am using iPhoto 08 v 7.1.5 on Max OS X 10.6.4
We are 2 users sharing the same iPhoto library and after ongoing issues with permissions I have moved the iPhoto library (as per Apple's instructions) to a Sparse Disk Image on the Shared folder and changed the permissions for all to rear&write - then copied the library to this Disk Image and pointed all iPhoto libraries there.
Worked well until we started to import photos from a camera. From my profile it imported the photos, but then when copying them to the library come up with an error 'File is corrupt'. I started iPhoto in shift&option mode and repaired permissions. This fixed it and I could import.
The other user imported photos yesterday from their profile. No errors on import and the photos were property loaded into the library. I did check the library AND the files in the Finder - all was well. 2 hours later, ALL FILES HAD GONE!!! There were no trace of the files. Not in the trash (iPhoto or System) - I searched the whole drive, GONE!!!
I am a bit freaked, if iPhoto is going to delete files permanently from the drive its NOT good. The photos were already deleted from the camera so they are gone for good.
Has anyone experienced the same or got an explanation??
Appreciate any help with this!

I've seen this mentioned on here a couple of times. Tracing it with these other users what seems to occur is that iPhoto imports the photos to the database but fails to copy the actual files into the Originals folder.
I'm not sure why this happens.
If you haven't used the camera since you can recover the files from the card with an app like MediaRecover

I have a new computer and the hardrive of my dead computer plugged into it but it wants to erase my iphone to sync. How can I get the old itunes acct on my new computer?

HT201250 old data transferred to new computer via time machine, is external hard drive still usable

I set up my new macbook from an old macbook via time machine and an external WD Harddrive.
The setup partitioned my macbook to two user id's, now I need to back up.
The old user id is backing up everything again and the new user id wants to create a new backup to my WD Harddrive like it is not used.
I don't believe that my WD was partitioned.
Help! How can I continue using my WD and backup both user id information without losing anything?

When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. Hello all, how do I back up a folder as new library to free space from hard drive to external drive BUT leave my favorites pictures still on hard drive?

Hello all, I organise all my photos in a base folder by year and then sub folders for each destination I have visited, i.e. 2013 then USA as sub folder. I would like to backup each year as new library to external hard drive which I can do. BUT I keep a copy of my favourite pics in various albums which can have photos from multilpe years. After backing up to external hard drive I would like to delete the year folder but keep the pics in the album. Is this possible? If so, how?

To be more accurate, I have no issue doing the backup folder as new library but when i delete from hard drive it deletes all pics that were in my albums. I would ideally like to keep my favourite selection of photos on my hard drive.

New Imac, has problem using previous portable hard drive

Been using a Seagate portable hard drive on various apple computers for 3 years. had a new one for school this year, and went to use it on our new computer. it does not recognize the hard drive, when you plug it in. did I forget something here?

Illaass, yes I have used this drive on MANY apple compuers from Imac, to mac pro's and my laptop at home. it has worked flawlessly on all of them. It is formatted to Mac. appears to be in working order, and works fine when I transfer it back to my laptop. "problem" laptop does not hold Photoshop, and I have work to do.
It appears to be spinning, and cable apears functional.
noyt sure about the last question though? I do not find the drive ANYWHERE on the new computer.

To build on the second option provided by The Edmeister make sure that you have your Sync Key, if this is not the case Firefox Sync will not help you (data is encrypted with that Key).
Finally, if the last sync happened long time ago, it may be the case that your data is not on the servers anymore. Firefox Syn wasn't designed as a back up service.

Prevent automatic syncing one time, without changing settings: Open iTunes. Then, as you connect iPhone to your computer, press and hold Shift-Control (on a PC) until you see iPhone appear in the sidebar. Then, use iTunes File menu > Transfer Purchases from XXX's iPhone. This will transfer your purchased items.
For your other stuff you will need a 3rd party utility. Find discussion of them here
