New hard drive in iMac g5 2004 wont work

My 2004 iMac g5 started up with the dreaded flashing folder. In the past on my apple laptops when this happened I would replace the hard drive and it would work. I replaced the hard drive on my iMac and the blinking folder still flashes. The hard drive is completely blank. Is it because there is no os on the drive or is it the logic board? I can't get it to recognize the os disk, keyboard, or mouse. Help

That model will only work with SATA I&2 drives, not SATA 3. And if it's SATA 2, it needs to be jumpered down from 3 to 1.5 Gbit/s.
And of course as noonday says, you need to install anOS. But you won't be able to unless you take care of the above. The drive will simply not be seen in Disk Utility.

i copied itune music from old hard drive to memory disk the copied onto new hard drive into itunes and music wont play unless removalbe disk is inserted

Then your iTunes must be looking at the removable disc, not your hard drive. Did you actually copy the songs onto your computer, or simply tell iTunes to look at the removable drive?
Highlight a song and click on File/Get Info/Summary>Where and check the location that iTunes has listed for the song. What does it say?

  • Installed new hard drive in imac and i get folder with question mark, put in OS install disk and it does nothing? All I have is wireless key board and mouse, is this a factor?

Installed new hard drive in imac and i get folder with question mark, put in OS install disk and it does nothing? All I have is wireless key board and mouse, is this an issue?

Other than put disc in you don't give much info about what you've done. With the install disc inserted restart your Mac while holding the C key, that should start it up from the install disc. Should also work fine with a wireless Apple keyboard.

  • I have installed new hard drive to iMac intel 2007 model and all I get on the screen is a grey question mark, tried system disk and now that's stuck in drive and just spinning around, any help please

Sorry put all question on subject line. As I said fitted new hard drive, but all I get is a folder with a flashing grey question mark. Tried system disk but that is now just spinning around in DVD drive and I can't get it out. Any help with these problems would help

Sounds like the new drive is not being recognized. Could be it's a SATA3 drive with a 6Gb/s transfer rate and needs to be jumpered down to 3. But if the 2007 is 1.5, it may not work at all, even if jumpered down. Other possibility is a not properly secured cable or a cable that's come loose from the logic board.
What is the model of the 2007 Mac? What's the new drive? Did you do the installation or was it done by a shop?
You can find your model here. Look next to Standard Hard Drive:

  • Installing new hard drive on iMac G5

I've read all the instructions and a lot of posts but have a few questions. I've never done this before so I want to be certain I don't screw something up.
    1. If I install a new hard drive on my iMac do I have to put the original install discs in or can I put the Leopard discs in to install the OS? The original manual says to put your iMac discs in but I'm wondering if I can bypass this.
    2. Reinstalling all my current data: does Time Machine give me the option to do this automatically or do I have to manually replace all my settings?
    3. How long does this process generally take?
    Thanks! Hal

    Hi there,
    1. You can re-install the operating system from either the original disks or the Leopard disks.
    2. However, if you want to use a Time Machine backup to re-install all of your settings and apps etc. then you can only select this option while booted from the Leopard install disk. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully and you will see this option.
    3. It should take roughly an hour, depending on how big the drive is and how much data you have.
    Hope this helps.

  • New hard drive on iMac but can't use time machine backup

I just installed a new hard drive on my 2007 iMac but it will not let me back up to a time machine backup.  I can see the files i want but has the red circle with this message  :The folder “Documents” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.  help!

You haven't gone about this the right way. After installing OS X, when you booted from the new drive, you were prompted to transfer data from a Time Machine backup, among other options. That's what you should have done. The simplest, but not the fastest, way to recover is to start over by erasing the startup volume and installing again.

  • App store not working properly a new hard drive in iMac

    Hey guys,
My seagate hard drive crashed, so had to get a new hard drive in intel late 2009 iMac. When I go to app store, it is acting weird. Some of the programs it says I have installed are not installed on my computer. So I am unable to download them. Also I am unable to update garageband, imovie and iphoto. No clue what needs to be done. Hope spmepme has a answer.
    Thanks Philip

    Try resetting the App Store.

  • Installing new Hard Drive on iMac G5 (iSight) - Partition timing out

After installing a new hard drive on my iMac (iSight) G5 I am trying to install OSX, but the hard drive is apparently not formatted properly. I have erased all the data on the hard drive, and am attempting to create a single partition. I get an error that says Partition Failed - Operation Timed Out. Does anyone have a place they can refer me to where I can understand exactly how to format a brand new hard drive successfully to be able to install the OS?

and I don't know if I am supposed to erase the disk first?
Doing the partition procedure will erase the drive in the process. Using the Partition tab and making sure the +Partition Map Scheme+ is appropriate for you Mac (it should be +Apple Partition Map+ for a PowerPC Mac like G5) is the most complete way to re-initialize your drive.
Is there a step by step instruction to ensuring I can simply install the OS?
I think I gave the steps to go through BEFORE the installation. The installation itself does not have any "steps" because once you start it, it completes and restarts your Mac into the new installation.
I found this in Apple knowledge base, but I think you know those steps.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8177.html
And if you are re-installing after erasing the drive, you don't need to choose an installation option like +Archive and Install+ or +Erase and Install+. Just use the default installation.

  • Have Old Hard drive and want to move old data onto new hard drive in imac.

I am trying to get my files off of an old hard drive. I have it hooked up through a sata drive. I am able to access all the programs but for whatever reason I am unable to access any of the files, i.e- 1,00's of pictures, videos, music, and documents. Is there something else I need to do in order to get the files, or is it possible that all the programs could still be on it but the files are just missing? In the current Sata it only has two plugs but on my hard drive it looks like there is another place to plug something in.

    Hello again Shadow,
The way I do this is to:
    1) Install your new hard drive into your iBook
    2) Get your iBook reassembeled
    3) Place your old hard drive in your firewire enclosure
    4) Insert your install DVD into your iBook and restart with the C key held down. When the installer launches, select your language in the first pane, click 'continue' and in the upper dropdown menu in the next page select Utilities > Disk Utility. After DU is open, select your hard drive from the list of volumes on the left (the very top one), and then click the 'Partition' tab to the right. Then select 1 partition (normal) and make sure that you have 'Mac OS Extended (journled)' selected in the lower section. Then click 'partition'
5)Quit disc utility, which brings you back to the installer. continue with your installation of OS X. In one of the first steps you will see a button on the lower left which says 'options' click on that and make sure that the option 'Installs OS X for the first time' is selected. It will normally be selected by default with a new drive.
    6) After the installation, the Migration Assistant will ask if you would like to transfer your information from another mac. click yes then follow the instructions. but instead of using another mac, connect a firewire cable from your enclosure with your old hard drive installed. The installer will think that this is another mac and will transfer all of your account information and user files (everything!)from your old drive to your iBook's new drive. Just diconnect when it says to and complete the installation sequence.
    You're done!
Check back again if anything is unclear.

  • Installed new hard drive in my mac book wont boot up

I installed a new 1TB Hard Drive, it fit perfect. This is the first time I try this.
When I turn on my Mac Book it powers up but only a folder with a question mark appears on the screen
    HELP

Here is away of installing a new HDD in a MBP.  You do need an enclosure.
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
    1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
    2. You will need a HDD enclosure.  One with a USB connection will do.  A 9 pin Firewire is better.
    3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
    4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE.  From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field.  Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'.  Click on the 'Erase' button.
    5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top).  Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination'  field.  Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more.  A Firewire will speed up the transfer.  This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
    6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives.  Start the MBP and you have finished the installation.  The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
    7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.
    Good luck.
    Ciao.

  • Installed new Hard Drive in iMac G3, can't get OSX to install

I installed a new 40GB drive in my iMac G3 333Mhz Tray Loader, I used the Disk Utility to create one 37.15GB partition called "Machintosh HD". When I run the Mac OS X Panther installer it recognizes my partition but there is a Red Exclamation point on it and it exclaims "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. This destinationis not within the first 8GB of this hard disk. Does this mean that I can only create an 8GB paritition for the Operating System?

The tray-loading iMac G3s require a first partition of just under 8GB and that's where OSX must go, so you have accurately intrepreted the messages.
Those computers were designed long before OSX was a gleam in it's daddy's eye and, were it not for the 8G partition thing, could not run OSX at all.
I set up three Powerbooks G3s that share that partition limitation. With a smart install of Panther (install none of the printer drivers and don't install foreign language support or fonts) I got the System to right at 2G, leaving nearly six for apps that must be in the folrder and thfor the needed swap files.
The second larger partition is a great place to put OS9, data files (like  music, photo or movie libraries). It is also the best place for apps that don't have to be in the OSX partition. That's usually those with a drag-n-drop installation.

  • Error 150:30 had to move to larger hard drive.  Once migrated to new hard drive none of my adobe products work

I recently upgraded to a new larger hard drive.  In migrating everything over things seem to have worked out well, but non of my adobe products work any more.  I get the message error #150:30 What can I do?  If I reinstall each of these software packages, will I loose my templates, brushes and so forth?

Migrating software programs from one machine or HD seldom works.  You need to actually *install* software from downloads or installation disks.  You don't mention which product ver you have.
Run the CS or CC Cleaner Tools below to wipe all traces of Adobe products from your HD.  Then re-install the customary way.
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Typically you only need to deactivate if you had previously installed your products on 2 machines.  Creative Cloud software installed on a 3rd machine will deactivate the previous installations.

  • My harddrive crashed.  I got a new hard drive, and attempted to port my CS3 design software onto my new hard drive.  It says it cannot work and I must uninstall and reload the software.  I registered the software and have the serial, but cannot find the o

I bought the design premium in 2007 and can no longer find my original software.  I need to uninstall and reinstall but again can't find my software, but all applications are in my backup drive. Any help?

    Julia,
Here is a download site which goes back to CS3:
    http://technolux.blogspot.co.nz/2011/02/adobe-direct-download-links-less-akamai.html#more
Or you may use this one, (t is crucial to follow all the initial steps precisely):

There are known issues with Yosemite, if that is the OS, but according to this site, someone has made Yosemite work with almost all CS/CC versions.

For a specific CS3/Yosemite issue, namely CS3 crashing on opening under Yosemite, this solution,
    1) Open System Preferences > Java
    2) Wait for the Java Control Panel to load
    3) Open Adobe Illustrator (while keeping the Java Control Panel window open)
