New HDD not showing in disk utility

Help please!
i can up on a broken G5 i have replaced the HDD. now i am trying to install tiger. but the new internal HDD is not showing up in disk utility.
i plugged my passport in and it popped right up.
some one please let me know what you think.

Well, having a had hard drive connected may cause a grey screen (if the system cannot successfully perform a check of connected devices). Not sure about the fan.
If you have not done so yet, be sure to try resetting PRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If that does not help, you can also try resetting the SMU (power management).
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
Follow the procedure precisely.
It is also possible that the old drive was not bad and your iMac has some other problem. Did you ever test the previous drive on another Mac (or connected externally) to confirm it was faulty? That +other problem+ may be what you are experiencing now.
Also, I asked this previously but, are you able to start up the iMac using the optical drive, with a Mac OS X installation disc in there?

  • Thunderbolt WD Duo, does not show in Disk Utility

Hi Have imac 27 (late 2012) with 10.8.3 update OSX. Connecting to WD Thunderbolt Duo, the disk does not show in disk Utility, sys log or in any connection to the system. WD utility does not seems it either. Restart does not help. By disk returning to seller, the disk works fine on other comp (with the same cable, with the same power adapter)
Is there any issue known with the thunderbolt ports? Tried both all found on internet, but no resolution, to my issues.
Seems to be my imac hardware or maybee the software (thunderbotl 1.2) update.
    Lukas

All thunderbolt port tried, cable exchanged, no change
I have done following procedure , no change
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Macbook Pro 2012 HDD not mounting/not showing in disk utility

I opened the macbook to find all apps freezing, nothing would work. So i did a hard shutdown and restarted the machine, and when it booted i just got the flashing folder icon. I re-booted into internet recovery, and went in to Disk Utility and found that the hard drive was not mounting and showing in there. I swapped the hard drive with a spare SSD and it worked fine, so it's not the cable. Also when i boot up, i can hear the hard drive spinning so its not completely dead. I have booted it up as a target disk with the iMac and it still will not appear. There's some photos and other bits that i really want to recover from this drive. Any advice?

Okay, so i have held off going to an Apple store because i wanted to recover the data from the hard drive before repair/replacement. I fitted a 120GB SSD drive which worked fine until today when i opened it up and the same thing occurred. It would seem that it is not the hard drive that had a problem, but perhaps a software issue. I managed to boot up once after the crash and the error report listed a kernel panic as the root of the problem. Here is the full report, which i also got the first time it happened...

Any help or ideas what may have caused this? I can't boot into safe mode, and i cannot mount the drive to repair in disk utility. Is there a way to resolve this myself?

  • Hard drive not showing in Disk Utility?

Recently, I went to install Windows 10 via Bootcamp and set up two partitions (one for OS X, 500gb and one for Windows, 500gb). I accidentally installed Windows onto of the OS X partition and somehow the Windows OS disappeared so I currently have no OS to boot in to. I can run Yosemite off of a USB, but when I go to Internet Recovery or Disk Utility, it only shows this.
      Disk Description : Media
      Total Capacity : 0 Bytes
      Connection Bus : SATA
      Write Status : Read/Write
      Connection Type : Internal
      S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
      Partition Map Scheme : Unformatted
I know the hard drive can't be dead because this is a brand new laptop and it was working just fine before. How can I get the drive fixed?
Instead of buying DiskWarrior since it's $110, can I just buy a new 1TB HDD and put it into the computer? Can I hook up my laptop via Firewire to my iMac and reformat the drive or something?

Or try and boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys.  The display should show a revolving globe.  By following the instructions, this will connect the MBP to the Apple servers and allow you to erase the HDD and reinstall the ORIGINAL OSX.
    Ciao.
The problem with this option is that the computer does not recognize that there is any space on the hard drive itself. The hard drive is just labeled as "Media" and has 0 bytes available. I tried using GUID partitions but Disk Utility says the drive is too small.

  • External hard drives not showing in disk utility

When I connect a new Eagle/Consus W-Series external hard drive enclosure to my 15" PB, the hard drive doesn't show-up in the left hand pane of the Disk Utility window. The only thing that shows is the drive in the PB. The hard drive in the enclosure is a WD SATA and is connected via USB cable. The same thing happens, or doesn't happen, when I'm connected via ethernet to my G5 2.3GHz Dual Core: when I open Disk Utility on the PB, the drive on the G5 doesn't show. What I'm trying to attempt is to mirror/clone Tiger from my PB onto the new, to me, G5 using SuperDuper.

Hi, Bob. I obviously didn't understand the situation properly, and now that I realize that, I'm afraid I still don't.
When the G5 is connected, via ethernet to my PB, the hard drive does not show-up in the PB's disk utility pane.
The G5 doesn't have a hard drive in it now, is that correct? So why connect it via Ethernet to the Powerbook?
If you're trying to clone the Powerbook's hard drive onto the G5's drive inside the external enclosure, all that needs to be connected is the external enclosure to the Powerbook, via USB cable. The G5 itself isn't involved in that process at all. When the G5's drive is in the enclosure and connected to the Powerbook, does it appear in Disk Utility on the Powerbook? If not, see my previous suggestions, with the exception of my comment about it not working with either computer.
If the SATA hard drive doesn't appear on the Powerbook's desktop or in Disk Utility when it is in the G5 and the computers are properly networked via Ethernet, recheck your sharing settings: the G5's drive must be shared to be visible to the Powerbook. In that mode, you may not be able to clone the Powerbook's drive to the other one, because the drive in the G5 is being used to run the G5. But if the G5's drive is partitioned, you should be able to clone the Powerbook's drive, via Ethernet, to a partition other than the one which contains the OS that's running the G5.
While the hard drive is in the external enclosure, I can hear it spinning, and am assuming that all the connections are working properly.
If the drive spins, you can be sure it's getting power, and that's good. But you can't safely conclude from that that any or all of the data connections are working properly; in fact the evidence suggests the contrary.
In short, there may be not one but two problems at work here: incorrect sharing settings when the two computers are networked, and a bad cable, connection, or enclosure when the drive is connected to the Powerbook via USB.
EDIT: Let me also add that if the only Tiger installer discs you have are the ones that came with the Powerbook, then having copies of that Tiger installation on both of your computers would be a violation of the software license that accompanied those discs, which entitles you to have Tiger installed on only one computer at a time. If that's the case, you should really buy a retail Tiger installer disc to use on the G5.

  • Hard Drive not showing in Disk Utility (but showing fine on PC)

I have been using an 1TB USB powered Hard Drive with my MBP for a year or so.
I got a new 2 TB drive and loaded it and installed the seagate dashboard software.
At that point, it appears something may have happened to my HP and it no longer appears on my Mac or in Disk Utility.  It appears to be getting power, and it shows up fine on a Windows PC.
    Any thoughts??
This one is really baffling me?
    Thanks

    One other note
A folder called TheVoumeSettingsFolder now appears on the HP, in case that is causing the issue.
    Thanks

  • Mac Pro (late 2013) New ssd not seen in disk utility

    Hi Guys :-)
    I have a quirky problem.
I've run out of harddrive space, so I bought a new 1 TB SSD via Ebay, which is an original SSD from Samsung.
A month ago I bought another SSD, which didn't show up, so I sent it back thinking it was a faulty drive.
Today I received a new drive and it doesn't show up in Disk Utility either
But I'm pretty sure there must be something wrong with my system. When I boot up, I use a Yosemite installer via USB.
Hope you guys can help me, it's really frustrating.
    Cheers
    Andy

It is the way Apple board treats the text and the link is the 2nd line. I would have had to use Advanced Editor which is needed to clean it up, is not a default option, and the problem only happens on Apple Discussions.
Thought maybe you were aware of the thread already, many are, and then tried to find WHERE in the thread there are
Photos of modules along with part numbers and other vital information, and was asking you to post back with just who and what part number they sent. There are not a lot of people selling 1TB Apple units.
You can always search thread for a particular

I wanted to bring the discussion forward one data point or two: seller and device ID.
Your issue is with a used part, installing and mounting, and whether you have an external case like the one OWC sells to hold an M.2 size SSD.

  • Crucial m4 256 GB internal SSD not showing in disk utility on MacBook Pro a1226 (late 2007) 2.4 ghz.

After the original Fujitsu 160gb hd died in my MacBook Pro (model A1226), I was advised at the Mac store to upgrade to a SSD.  I installed the crucial m4 256gb internal SSD and powered on MacBook Pro from the Snow Leopard install disk so I could use disk utility to erase and reformat the new SSD.
The problem is the SSD is not showing up in disk utility.  I have opened the computer twice and checked cable connections and still no luck.  I have powered off computer and let sit for a while and tried again.  I check compatability on crucial site before ordering SSD so I don't know what the problem is.  Bad disk?

    You were given bad advice.
Return/Sell the SSD and buy a 7,200 RPM hard drive instead, it should work fine and a more of a match for your older machine.
Your Mac doesn't have the faster SATA connections for a SSD also 10.6 isn't equipped for SSD's only hard drives, your basically putting a Ferrari engine in a Yugo, it can't handle it.
The 7,200 RPM drive will give you the performance and more drive space than a SSD anyway.
Follow these instructions when you erase and install 10.6, it will give the best results.

  • External Hard Drive doesn't mount, not showing in Disk Utility

I have had this Western Digital external hard drive for a few months now and until this evening it worked fine. It won't show up on my Macbook Pro and it is not present in the Disk Utility section. The light on the external hard drive is on so it doesn't appear to be a power issue. I have another of the same exact hard drive and it works fine. I tried switching USB cables and even power supplies and I can't get it to work. Does anyone know how to recover the files or is the hard drive toast?

Something's wrong inside the case; it's either a problem which is preventing the computer from properly connecting to the drive or the drive itself is dead.
Data recovery from a failed drive can only be done by a professional service, which can charge hundreds or thousands of dollars.

  • Partition Tab not showing in Disk Utility

    Hello again everyone,
I'm attempting to partition my LaCie 2TB (RAID1) Disk in Disk Utility, however the partition tab is not showing up..
There are 4 items visible in the Disk Utility window:
    1)  the Internal OS Disk
    2)  the LaCie 2TB (RAID1) Disk
    3) & 4)  the two slices/partitions of the LaCie mirrored RAID
I select the 2TB LaCie RAID1 Disk, however it only shows the "First Aid" & "RAID" tabs.
The "Partition" (as well as "Erase" & "Restore") tabs are not available or shown.
When I select the Internal OS Disk all the Tabs are shown, and when the 2 slices or partitions of the RAID1 are selected it shows the "First Aid, Erase, Partition, Restore" tabs..
Am I missing a step here??  I know I'm not supposed to select the slices/partitions of the RAID, but instead to select the LaCie 2TB Disk itself, however this is the only option which does not show any "Partition" Tab..
Any assistance is GREATLY APPRECIATED..  Thank you!

    Have you tried this:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
I'm sort of confused as to why you would partition a 3 GB drive into just a single 1 TB partition, but that's what I understood you to say. Is this 3 TB drive installed in an enclosure that actually supports a drive of that size? Older enclosures may not and should not be used.

  • My Macbook Pro mid 2012 is not reading/connecting to my (working)external hard disk(also not showing in disk utility)

I connected my 500GB Storjet external hard drive to my mac(Mountain Lion) http://in.transcend-info.com/products/Catlist.asp?modno=325 but it is not connecting to it. Disk Utility is also not showing it. and the hard disk is working... My PS3, My Sony TV and my other laptop(win7) is detecting it... Also whenever it gets connected a blue light blinks, but It doesnt for mac. I have tried reformatting to both FAT32 and NTFS... Please help..
Also I sorta screwed my Mac so I had to do the internet recovery thing and only after that such problems occured, it was working fine before. So it installed Lion first and then Mountain Lion. It wasn't working on any of the OS.

Power down the Mac, Full power off. Connect the drive using the Y cable and then turn the Mac back on.
If it still doesn't show in at least Disk Utility then start checking your USB ports to see if both are working properly. Just plug in a USB thumb drive and that should show in both Finder and Disk Utility. If one of the ports isn't seeing the thumb drive then that port is bad and the system needs to be services by Apple.

  • Non-formatted External Harddrive not showing in Disk Utility

I have an empty external hard drive that is not formatted. I would like to format this and use for storage of some of my larger files. However, it doesn't show up in Disk Utility, or also doesn't show up when checking off "Show External Drives" in finder preferences. If I have it plugged in to the mac during start up, I only get a grey screen, the mac will not start. I've tried this on my 2010 Macbook Pro and 2012 Macbook Pro, same results. I have to unplug it for the computers to start. Both are running OSx Yosimite. Any suggestions of programs that will format this

Sounds like a broken ext HD. Replace it.

  • Time Capsule Not showing in Disk Utility

Right, There are a few things for my case:
Disk Utility doesn't show anything related to the Time Capsule.
There is a .purgeable in the disk in an attempt to delete the whole back up due to speed issues (using TM to delete it)
I can't delete the .purgeable file with Finder or tmutil
It doesn't back up because of the partially deleted image (It doesn't give an error, it's been like that for many many hours, tho)
I have files in a folder in the time capsule which stop me from trying to completely erase the content of it.
I have already resetted the laptop, networl, and time capsule
    Anyone can help me, please?
I'm using Mavericks and Airport Utility 6.3.2

Disk Utility will not display a network drive. It will only display a drive that is connected directly to your Mac using USB, FireWire, or Thunderbolt.
If you want to erase the disk on the Time Capsule......
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Disk tab at the top of the next window
    Click Erase Disk
The Quick Erase option will only take a few minutes
Zero Out will replace everything on the drive with zeros, probably taking 4-6 hours
    Click Erase
