New iMac owner, but a few questions!

Hey all, just got a Brand New iMac yesterday, first Mac computer owned and loving it so far, but I have a few questions.
iChat: I have my AIM name on there, but whenever someone sends me a message, a very small box pops up asking if I want to accept or decline, even if I have them in my buddy list. Any way to turn that off? I looked through the settings, couldn't find anything.
iTunes: Is there anyway to fully close out of iTunes? Whenever I X out of it, the music still plays, and it seems as though iTunes is still open until I hit the Command+Q. Then when I re-open it, it leaves off where it was. What I am wondering is if you are able to completely close out of it with Xing it out.
Preview: If I open a photo, it automatically opens with Preview, when I X out of it, Preview is still in the Dock until I right click and click "close." Anyway to get around that as well?
Also, what Application would you recommend for a College student typing term papers and whatnot? And are there Applications to download for free? Like....I cant think of an example.
I'm sorry for all the questions, but I've been a Windows user all my life, just trying to get used to the iMac.

Hi GeneticFusion: Welcome ot the world of Mac. I could tell by your description that you are an Ex-Windows user. You are on the right track with the Command Q idea. This is the proper way to completly close a program. You could also go to the name of the open program, click and select "Quit <Program>. As to a program to use to type term papers, check out NeoOffice. It is free, and available at http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php
Enjoy

  • New iMac owner - trouble viewing videos

Hi - I am a brand new iMac owner. Running OS 10.8.5  Mountain Lion I believe. What exact plug ins do I need to view videos? Nothing works through safari onn youtube or any other hosted video site that I've tried. Thanks

Well, as a matter of fact there is no need to have Adobe Flash Player installed to watch videos on YouTube.
Of course you can install it, but you can live without it and be able to watch YouTube videos altogether.
Open Safari, go to Safari's preferences, Advanced. Check "Show Develop menu in menu bar"
Now you have a new tag in the menu bar named Develop. From there you can select a new User Agent, for example "Safari iOS 6.1 - iPad". This, let YouTube's server believe that you are running Safari on an iPad and streaming the video on your Mac.

Or you can use a third-party utility such as Phone to Mac - Pod to Mac.

  • New Macbook Pro owner, just a few questions?

I just bought my Macbook pro around a month ago, I just had a few questions since this is my first Apple computer.
    1. My screen often gets smuges on it, any suggestions on what to use to clean the screen without damaging?
    2. I have a PC that I rarely ever turned off, anyone know whether or not it would be more beneficial to shut down the laptop everynight or keep it running?
    3. Do you suggest keeping up with all of the software updates that become available?
    4. Can I watch DVDs and Blu-ray movies on this laptop? are they able to be saved?
    5. Any other tips / suggestions would be great! Like I've said, this is my first apple computer, after a month I am still trying to get used to it.
    Thanks!

    1. In MacBook: Care, Use, and Safety Information, Apple says:
Dampen a clean, soft, lint-free cloth or paper with water only and wipe the screen. Do not spray liquid directly on the screen.
That's what I do. Microfiber cloths are so effective at removing fingerprints and grime that they can sometimes do it without water, but a little water helps microfiber cloths a lot. Because of the way microfiber cloths work, chemicals are rarely needed. Apple warns against using "aerosol sprays, solvents, or abrasives" because your screen has coatings that can be scratched or eaten away by the wrong chemicals. iKlear products are safe, but they cost significantly more than cloths and water.
    2. I am also one of the many Mac users who rarely shut down or reboot their MacBook Pro. My friends and I routinely go weeks without rebooting, we just close the lid at night and it sleeps. This is great because it allows the Mac to be instant-on: open the lid and all your open apps and documents are where you left them, with zero startup time.
Part of the reason for being able to run for long periods of time is that OS X is based on Unix, which was originally written as an operating system for servers, which require stability during 24/7 operation and long uptimes between reboots.
    3. It is best to keep up with all security updates that become available, since they are about security. After that, you can install other available updates whenever you want. If you don't want to be updating all the time just wait until you want to click the Update button, like maybe updating only on the weekends if you want.
    4. If your MacBook Pro has an internal optical drive it will play DVDs. No Macs play Blu-ray Discs unless they have an extra cost drive and third-party software. You can rip DVDs using software like Mac DVDRipper Pro; I use that and then I run them through HandBrake (popular on Mac and Windows) to convert for my phone, tablet, and Plex for my TV.
    5. In general Macs don't need a lot of maintenance because many maintenance routines that used to be manual have been built into the normal operation of the system.

  • Mac to Windows ?'s - brand new iMac owner,  Help please...

I am proud brand new 24” iMac owner (early Christmas present to myself), the first time I ever used a Mac was when I turned mine on right out of the box 2 days ago. I will be using my iMac mainly for basic Music/Pictures/Videos stuff like browse the web, downloading and to maintain my iphone and ipods.
I am having some trouble organizing all of my media about 300gb worth, I am so used to Windows and how I had everything set up and organized that my iMac feels out of control. Any suggestions on organization ideas/strategies would be very appreciated.
If someone would be so kind to please help me along with these Windows to Mac questions…..
I will gladly appreciate any and all feedback!
    Thanks in advance
    1.) Internet Security –
Q - I frequently download torrents and use Limwire. What is recommended for a Mac and are there any free anti-virus programs that work good?
True or False? – I have read that since there are no viruses made for Mac that this is not needed , unless you often share with a Windows computer or something along those lines….
    2.) Windows Defrag/Disk Cleanup –
Q - Is this necessary for a Mac, if so does Mac have a similar process to cleanup unused space on the hard drive?
A – I have read that it is not necessary for a Mac, but some users still prefer to do disk cleanup (Any recommended disk cleanup programs? Preferably free).
    3.) Installing programs on a Mac –
Q - Can I mess this up, or is it self explanatory like Windows?
A – I think I have figured this out. I have successfully installed MS Office, Adobe Premium CS3, etc… BUT in Applications in the finder, once the download is complete can I have just the App there or should I leave the whole folder and its downloaded contents? What I mean is if I were to delete the other misc downloaded files inside the folder would the program still run correctly?
Im not sure how to make myself clear on this, so if its way too confusing I can live with a few extra folders….
    4.) Additional Programs –
Q - Are there any “must have” programs that do not come standard on an iMac?
FYI – I have brand new MS office, full Adobe Premium CS3, Toast, and Transmission torrent dloader (I think that’s what it is called)
    5.) iTunes –
Q - Is it possible to import your iTunes library from Windows to a Mac?
    - I think I am actually going to re-do my whole library manually, BUT can I somehow get all my playlists from my Windows laptop to my iMac?
    6.) Folder Icons -
Q - On Windows you can change the basic blank folder or icon to a different icon or picture (thumbnail view), is this customizable on a Mac also?
    - So far its looking like it is not possible… The only customization I can seem to do is to “label” with a color. I would really like to be able to customize that basic blue folder, any suggestions?
    7.) Application Task Manager (Ctrl/Alt/Del) -
Q - Does Mac have a similar option if not, how can I view all current applications running on my iMac?
Thanks again, its such a relief to have a community like this

    1. ClamXAV is the only free anti-virus software for the Mac.
    2. OS X defrags all files under 20 MBs on the fly. Unless you have a lot of very large files that undergo frequent changes, there's little need to defragment the drive. For disk repair and other maintenance see my FAQ at the end of this post.
    3. Programs are installed on a Mac much the same as on Windows. Some use installers while some you can just drag from the download file to the Applications folder.
    4. There are thousands of programs. What's one person's must have is another's must not. Mac software can be found for download at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
    5. Yes. See Macworld - How to transfer iTunes libraries between PC and Mac.
    6. Yes. You can download sets of replacement icons from many different sites. Or you can copy an image onto the clipboard (COMMAND-C) then select the folder you wish to change, press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. You will see the icon in the top left corner. Click on the image to select it then press COMMAND-V to paste the image in the clipboard. You now have a new folder icon. You can do this for files as well. CAVEAT: Not a good idea to change any OS X system folders. Although you can the next time you upgrade the OS the custom icons will likely disappear. You will then have to redo them. There are certain utilities that can change system icons as well.
    7. Yes. There are two different ones. The Application Switcher - press COMMAND-TAB to cycle through running applications. The Task Manager - press COMMAND-OPTION-ESC. The Task Manager can only be used to force quit running applications. If you want to view running applications then use the Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • New processor(s) or new iMac ? that is the question...

    Hi everyone,
My Dad is getting more and more kind of impatient at the slow running speed of the old Single processor base model Quick Silver G4 I gave him after I bought my MacPro. It does run OK and I upgraded its HD capacity to 150 GB and 40 GB, with 1.25 GB RAM, but it does run slow compared to today's computers.
He uses it mainly for Internet browsing and stocking our family's vast photo collection in iPhoto and printing out photo collection with a personnal home printer system.
Loading up iPhoto does taking some time and browsing and editing between Albums and photos can be lengthy at times while waiting for the beachball of death do run its course.
    The Milion dollar questions are:
    1) Is it worth it, in this day and age, to upgrade its single processor to a dual processor or save up that money for a new iMac in a few years?
    2) If I do upgrade its processor, do I need to upgrade other parts too ? that could become costly as well...worth it ?
    3) Would upgrading to a Double processor allow that much more speed and will it allow me to install Leopard or Snow Leopard because at the moment its stuck at Tiger?
    Opinions and comments ?!?

    1) Is it worth it, in this day and age, to upgrade its single processor to a dual processor or save up that money for a new iMac in a few years?
The rule of thumb is it is almost always cheaper to buy a newer used machine than to upgrade the processor. Possible exceptions if you can get the processor extra cheap, etc.
    2) If I do upgrade its processor, do I need to upgrade other parts too ? that could become costly as well...worth it ?
You've already done two of the big ones, the drive and the RAM.
    3) Would upgrading to a Double processor allow that much more speed and will it allow me to install Leopard or Snow Leopard because at the moment its stuck at Tiger?
You don't say exactly which model Quicksilver this is. Still, no G4 can run Snow Leopard which requires Intel processors which won't fit in a G4. Leopard, yes, assuming you have the RAM and processor speed.
    Opinions and comments ?!?
I don't know how far you can push it on the funds side. Put it this way, any PPC generation Mac is fast reaching the age of almost total non-support. Leopard is already one generation old and once you reach two generations, as Tiger just did, support really drops off. This is exacerbated by the advent of Intel Macs. As you see, Apple's new OS only runs on Intel Macs and many software developers are turning their backs on PPCs. What I'm saying is that you may want to reconsider tossing a couple of hundred on a processor upgrade for a computer that will still be markedly behind when you finish your upgrades. A few years ago when Leopard came out and PPCs were still young, if you had Panther and wanted Leopard you could toss in a faster processor and be running the newest OS on an old machine with not too many noticeable disadvantages vs. a newer machine. There's no way you're going to emulate that by putting a faster processor in a G4 unless you're content with still having limitations at the end of it all.
If at all possible try to get at least an Intel Mac of some variety and then you'll at least be able to run the newer OS versions.

  • New iMac owner (almost)

I am announcing that I am a new Intel iMac owner... Well, it is in the mail. This is a switch from a Win XP/Linux combo that I built myself. After a while, the big noisy fan box and the weekly (sometimes daily) maintenance on Windows gets annoying. I got a 17" with a new Canon Bluetooth All-in-One and a couple of games for the kids. I was close to getting the 20" G5 for the price, but I went for the technology and I will have the capability to expand my desktop if I need to. I understand the new Intel may have growing pains, but I am looking at future compatibility since I do not have any current software ties.
Any tips for a beginner who likes to be creative? I am looking forward to a more enjoyable experience with this computer!
    Intel iMac 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I switched over a year ago and me and my family are still spending around 8 hours a day on our MAC. I just purchased the new iMac and have had it for about one week. The MAC experience has been wonderful.
I had a friend and my brother purchase expensive Dells just before I got my iMac. Neither of them spend any time on their computers any more. My one friend put hers in the basement and never turns it on. However, like I said we spend at least 8 hours a day on the iMac and end up fighting each other to get on the machine.
I can't say enough about the iLife software. I've created a number of iMovies and GarageBand is a blast. My kids have learned so much from this computer. I feel the iMac is a bargin. I priced out a Dell that had similar hardware and software and the price was much higher that what I paid for the iMac. Everyone thinks PCS are so much cheaper, well they are if you get them bare bones, but then they end up in your basement. To get a PC with the same hardware and software that comes with an iMac you will spend more money.
The learning curve should be small for you. I work with about 250 PCs everyday and had never been on a MAC. After a few days I felt very comfortable with the O/S of which I'm very impressed with. The only thing that might have been a little hard getting use is that most software is written for PCs. You know, you get a free game disc in a box of cereal and it is only for a PC. However, there is a lot of software written for MACs and the software that comes with the machine is fun and useful.
Also, we got a MAC because we wanted a nice piece of furniture in our living room. We wanted the children off the basement computer where they were unsupervised. My wife wasn't going to allow an ugly PC in the living room. We the iMac makes for a nice looking piece of furniture and it gets noticed by guests and friends.
Like you I went with the upgrade to the 250 gig disk, but didn't get the extra memory. I will be upgrading memory at some point though. I hope you enjoy your iMac as much as I have. Good luck.

  • I am wondering what is the best way to merge a very large iphoto library (from my MBP) to my new iMac (which has a few hundred photos on it now), and then upgrade to Aperture?

I have about 50GB of photos on my old MBP iphoto library.
I have a new iMac with a few hundred photos that I've uploaded since I bought it last December.
The iMac is where I want to keep everything stored as my main photo library, and manage it with a new Aperture installation.
Before I go and do this, and possibly muck it all up,
I would like to figure out the proper steps.
I am not too familiar with how to transfer files in the first place, so any help for a beginner would be much appreciated.
Starting from how to safely move the files from the MBP to the iMac, if anyone could walk me through this process.
I've been searching around but I have a specific goal (with getting everything into Aperture) so I don't want to get crossed up.
    Thanks for your help!!

I have about 50GB of photos on my old MBP iphoto library.
To be able to merge your libraries, your Aperture version and iPhoto version must match. For basic reading see: Aperture 3.3: Using a unified photo library with iPhoto and Aperture
and Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries
Assuming you are running the latest Aperture and iPhoto versions:
Before merging libraries ensure that your iPhoto Library has no issues. While still on your old mac run the "library first aid tools" on your iPhoto Library. Hold down the key combination ⌥⌘ and double click your iPhoto Library, then select "Repair database".
Make sure you have a backup of your current Aperture Library and iPhoto library.
Do both macs have a FireWire port? Then you could connect your macs in Target Disk Mode:
See OS X Lion: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode
This way your new mac could see your old mac as an external disk and you could copy directly between the macs.
Otherwise copy your iPhoto library by drag-and-drop to an external disk (on your old mac) and connect that disk to your new mac. Check, if the external drive is formatted for mac (MacOS X Extended (Journaled)). Otherwise reformat it, before you copy the iPhoto library to that drive.
When your iPhoto Library has been moved to your new Mac launch Aperture and use the command "File > Import > Library" from the main menu bar. If there are duplicates in the Aperture library (if you imported earlier from iPhoto) you may be prompted if you want to "Add" or "Merge". If you have lots of duplicates, pick "Merge", otherwise "Add".
Post back, if you need more detailed instructions.
    Good Luck.

  • Buying a new iMac.  But when!?!?

Hello everyone. I am very excited to say that sometime in the next few months I am going to be getting my second iMac! I bought my first one (a 17" 1Ghz iMac with 768 RAM) about 5 years ago while in college... and it has been a good ride ever since!
The computer still works perfectly for every day stuff, like email, the web, iTunes, and such... but it is really starting to lag when I do iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, etc. I'm sure most of you know what I am talking about.
I'm finally ready to make the upgrade now that Leopard is here... and I am just trying to make sure that I time it right. When I bought my last one, I made the mistake of buying about 2 weeks before they added USB 2.0... which would have made a huge difference for me, since one of the biggest reasons I am upgrading now is that I can no longer sync my iPhone with the msot recent update which killed USB 1.1 compatability.
But, that is neither here nor there.
Anyway, I am hoping to buy in the next 2 months if possible, but for many reasons I want to make sure I time it right.
    1) There has been quite a few problems with the first alum gen of iMac screens, graphics cards, etc. I would like to wait for the second revision if possible.
    2) Macworld is in January... is there any possibility new iMacs will come out around that time?
    3) How far do you guys think Blu-Ray compatability is from being added to macs? When it comes out do you think it will be burnable Blu-Ray or just readable?
I found a website which tracks updates to all of Apple's computers, and attempts to tell you whether the time to buy is right or not, and that seems pretty interesting... http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#iMac
But I am curious about what you guys think. If you were in a position to get a new mac... but weren't really in a big hurry... when would you buy? Right away? After Macworld? Wait until the next version comes out (whenever that is)? I guess there are nearly limitless options here, and obviously you can't always wait because things like this are always changing and always improving.
But, nonetheless, would you wait for the next revision? When do you think it will take place?

It's unlikely there will be any changes to the recently released iMacs at Macworld Expo. I've just recently purchased a 24" 2.8GHz iMac w/750GB HD, and immediately upgraded to 4GB with Crucial memory, and it's working out great.
The ATI HD 2600 video card issue was resolved in early November. Anyone having a problem now is probably having a hardware issue, vice the software issue fixed by the early November patches (1.2 for Tiger/1.3 for Leopard). My iMac was built in week 45, and has had NO video anomalies at all, certainly no freezes attributed to the video card issue.
The front of the new iMac is covered with a large sheet of glass, which is very reflective. However much that concerns you depends on you. It concerns me not at all. The new iMac 24" LCD is very bright, overpowering any reflections while the Mac is in use. There's a window behind me that I've never noticed while using the Mac.
The only issues I've had with the new iMac involved incompatible apps I migrated over from my old 2.7GHz G5 Tower. I've weeded the troublesome apps out and my Mac is now working perfectly.
It's probably wise to wait for Macworld Expo the third week in January to see if there are any surprises, but you should have no concerns about the currently shipping 24" iMacs. They're great machines.

  • I have just switched my new iMac on but it's asking for a password ?? What password ?? It's not my Apple ID so how do I find out this password - could the store have put in a password when transferring my old computer files over to new iMac ??

I have just turned on my new iMac .. in store they said it was that simple !! BUT it's asking for a password ??? How do I know what this is as haven't set one up ? I had my old computer files migrated over onto this new iMac - is it possible they set up a password ? No one has given me. A password they said just turn it on and you are in !! Help - thanks

Yep will do in the morning ... Frustrating as thought it would be simple ... It's middle of the night here in the uk - thanks

  • I participated in the mountain lion free upgrade for new mac owners but the password is too long to unlock the content code. HELP!!!

i participated in the mountain lion free upgradde for new owners but i cannot open the content code because the password is too long! HELP!

What happened was that the password was 32 characters long and the field that they give you to use would not allow you to manually type those characters in (crazy huh?) but it took it when i copied and pasted it in!

  • New iMac G5 but no classic support in Tiger?

I have just bought a new iMac G5 20" with the latest Tiger 10.4x. When I want to install a peripheral or Quark from my old Os 9.2.2 it say "I do not have a version of Mac Os9 installed that supports classic or later." in the pop up window. I hit the ? button and it tells me to install from disc 2 the support files. When I do that it tells me there is nothing to install.
A greyed out icon appears in the menu bar. A widget appears in the widget bar.
I checked the startup disk to see if mac os9 was on it ,it's not.
Do I have a dud install 2 disk? The icon is only an alias for os9 support files.

What constitutes "compatibility" is partly what you mean by the word.
    From Tiger's built-in dictionary:
"• (of a computer, a piece of software, or other device) able to be used with a specified piece of equipment or software without special adaptation or modification"
By this definition, all recent Macs (except servers?) up to but not including the Intel-based ones are compatible with Classic, at least to the extent that installing the included Classic support is not considered a "special adaptation."
I think most people would consider something like SheepShaver quite a special adaptation: from what I can tell, it requires both an image of the PowerMac ROM & a copy of the Mac OS, which I presume are not included with Intel-based Macs. I also note it claims only to offer a "varying degree of functionality" with listed systems, among them "Darwin/ppc," but no specific reference to Darwin + Intel support. The only Intel CPU reference I see is to "Linux/ia32 (AKA x86)" so I'm not sure this emulator really should or could be considered a replacement for Classic in OS X/Intel systems, even in a limited way.
If you know otherwise, I'm sure that info would be of great interest to readers of this thread.

  • New iPhone owner review - wish list - question

Louder and better quality speaker phone and ear speaker
    Flash Player
Wide screen option for all apps
Games or at least the one I purchased on itunes
    No special adapter for headphones
I have all things Apple. So my 2 email accounts .mac and contacts is awesome.
Goggle maps is amazing. I will not go into detail. But how it integrated into what I needed to do was a job well done.
Internet was as expected for a cell phone. iPod quality as expected.
If it never got any better. I would still have one. What it does by far out weighs was some feel it lacks. No deal breaker. Which I think comes from building so many iPods.
Two things hurt the iPhone sales. The first is the mistake marketing made in the original pricing and 2 options. They admitted the 8gb was what people wanted. So the normal Apple choice or option in this case was a mistake. The price should have been 499. Then the 100 dollar price drop would have made a ripple rather than a title wave. Marketing missed the other major factor. Flagship product introduction with preventable Bad PR.
The other (hurt) thing that will hold back sales for at least 2 years is existing contracts that cost a customer to switch carriers. I think marketing felt the 200 dollar price drop would resolve that issue. But it did not. Apple and AT&T dropped the ball on that also. Apple should have issued a store credit and AT&T a reduced pricing plan for "switchers". Yes. That would affect short term profits. But thats the mistake. Real success is in long term customers. What they missed was volume of sales ( market share ) to offset short term profits. It could have been 3 million iPhones sold and in use now instead of 1.
This leads up to my question. Why is it when I called iPhone support the staff are not trained well. Has anyone else had the same people?

I'm with you Kmosh. I hope the update, if/when it finally arrives, includes more than just iTunes/Wi-Fi stuff. There are those of us out there who use these iPhones as communications devices and not just iPods with a phone thrown in. I don't need an easier way to buy music while I'm driving down the road or sitting at work. I hope the update includes things like cut and paste, Safari Flash, more customization, and numerous other functional enhancements I've seen mentioned in this forum. I'll be less likely to be a promoter of the iPhone if all we see is music-related enhancements. I like what it does now, and I'll continue to like it, but a few improvements would be good to see.

  • Leopard discount for new imac owners?

Just wondering if there is a discounts offer on the new OS for people who purchased the new imac in the last three months? Anyone know?

It's been covered here several dozen times already, but the standard Mac OS Up-To-Date upgrade package is available to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after October 1, 2007 for a shipping and handling fee of $9.95 (US). See this web page for details:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/
Note that the program ends on December 29, 2007. Your order must be postmarked or faxed by January 4, 2008, so if your system qualifies, don't delay in getting your order in.
