New Ipod user, please help

Hello everyone, i recently got a 30gb ipod video and i am really enjoying it. although the video portion is kind of odd. Podcasts are no problem, but when it comes to dvd's or just movies stored on my computer there seems to be a lot to choose from. I am running a windows machine but i am not sure as to what to use, sorry about the post(i know there is a lot). but i am looking for a good program to convert dvd's for use on my ipod. I dont know what to trust on here. Could someone please help me with what they use for windows. any help is appreciated, thanks

I have a windows system as well. I use two programs that work quite well and are free. First to get them (dvd's) on my computer I use decrypter. It works great, then I convert it with streamclip. It is a very good program that has worked well for me. I have converted a ton of dvd's and it has worked well. You can get it here http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html
Like I said it is free.
There are a lot of great programs out there and most work well.
I will leave you with one bit of advice, there is a Spammer that goes under several different names and is pushing a program called cucosoft. I would not use it just because the person goes under like 8 different names pushing this program. It is not free and he must be in the envolved with the company in some way shape or form. Right now he uses cindyzz or meggicc or collins... any many other names... so beware

  • Itunes library locked!!!! new mac user please help!!!!!!

i just got a new macbook pro.. i was transferring my music from an external hardrive to the itunes library, i have a lot of music, itunes stopped working so i forced it quit, and now when i try to open itunes i get this message that the itunes folder is locked or in a locked disk and i don't have permission to access it... What can i do??? im a new mac user.... please help!!!

    Di you get this fixed?
You could try changing the permissions of the file/folder where the iTunes library is stored
    It ''may' work
Find where the library is probably within the Music folder of your users home folder. Right click it and then Get Info
Go to the the Sharing and Permissions section at the bottom and make sure your user has rear write permissions. If not click the padlock change it, click the gear wheel and then apply to enclosing items, and OK.
I think that worked for me last time this happened...although I have now just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and the problem has just re occured and it has not worked this time. Maybe a re boot will help
You could also go to the Disk Utility (type Disk Utility in Spotlight) and try a repair permissions and Repair Disk

  • New IPod user need help

i just got a 4GB ipod nano for christmas. it say i have a 1000 songs but i only have 209 and now it won't let put anymore on it, its say its full. when i first loaded i tunes on my computer its asks if i want to make it my default player do i? what does that mean? also i took songs off my media player yahoo musicplayer is what what made it so full? is there anyway to change the file size or something or do i just have restore and start all over? someone please help me.

Bear in mind that Apple quotes the number of songs you are able to store on any iPod by using the AAC format at a bitrate setting of 128kbps and for a 4 minute song.
Look in iTunes under edit/preferences/advanced/importing. What does it say in settings and import using? You may have the import settings and bitrate set wrong. You need to compress your music using either mp3 or aac.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try using a USB2 port. If you are already using a USB2 port disconnect any USB1 devices on that port (i.e. if it's got a hub on it).

  • Some queries about my new ipod! PLEASE HELP!

    hey guys,
before you say, i have searched the forums far and wide, and am not satisfied with what i've found, so that's why i am posting these questions! lol.
anyway, here they are; please help if you're in the know!
    (1) I notice that i can feel the disk in the iPod spinning almost the whole time while watching videos. it is not a very loud noise, but it is enough to hear it slightly, and to feel vibrations. is this normal?
    (2) I notice that after watching short videos, the battery life plummets, only to regain when listening to music. i take it this is just an inaccuracy with the meter, and is normal?
    (3) just out of interest, how long can you run your ipod (a) playing songs, and (b) playing videos? i have a 30GB and i would be interested in comparing to others.
also, is the BTI external battery II a good option for when i need to watch vids for longer? are there any negative side-effects to the iPod because of it?
    thanks alot,
    oli.

    Let's see:
    1. What you're hearing/feeling is the hard disk spinning. It's normal. Moving video takes a lot more than moving music, so to stream it out means the disk has to keep spinning. A song file can be moved to the iPod's memory buffer and played from there, using a lot less disk action.
    2. The battery estimate is switching to reflect the current task. When you watch videos, it estimates how much time you have left to watch them, and when you go to music, it adjusts the estimate back.
    3. I haven't had the iPod video long enough to get an idea of how long the battery lasts for music and video, but it hasn't let me down yet. I hook it up to my Mac each night and run it through the day, and it hasn't ran all the way down during normal use. I haven't run too many videos through it yet, but short films didn't drain it.
I have a Belkin external battery pack that should work well during a 8-hour trip later this month. Estimates like 6 hours of video use, but it takes AA batteries, so an extra set of batteries is all I need. Doesn't harm or affect the iPod, but it bypasses the internal battery system, so you can't charge the iPod from it.
The BTI rechargeable battery should give you more play time, and may charge the iPod as well, but you can't stick batteries from anywhere in it.
    Hope that helps,
    Richard

  • New MAC user please help with Classic

I know there are many posts on this topic and i have probably read and tried them all. I am a new user to Mac (got sick of PC's). I recently purchased a used iMac G4 with office installed and was upgraded to 10.4.4 (it came with 10.3 disks). I need to have classic on my computer due to some programs that my kids bought and have tried to reinstall (seems to go all the way through)it using my disk and also a updated software restore I found in one of the posts but to no avail. Still when opening up classic it states that I need to install Classic since there is no folder. When the software restore program opens after it already has done its thing it tells me to insert the disk (even shows me the picture of the disks to insert). Well I try that and then it tells me it is the wrong disk. I don't know what else to try. Since this computer already came with office and other programs I do not want to do a clean restore back to 10.3 since that might wipe out those programs and i do not have the disks to reinstall them (office, Tiger, adobe, etc. I was told by the person I bought if from that office did not come with disks, was a software download from apple). Please gurus of Macs help me in my plight, you are my only hope!! On the good side things seem to be working smooth otherwise.

One of the CDs the iMac came with should have the Classic installer on it. See <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300396> or <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42929>.

Because you have 10.4 on it, the 10.3 install CD gets confused. See <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301719>.

You don't have to do a 'clean' (a.k.a. 'erase') install. You can do an archive install instead. That will move the old System stuff into a Previous System folder and install OS X 10.3.x on your system. You can then install Classic directly, and then update to 10.4.
You shouldn't have to go to that much trouble, though.

  • New mac user, please help!

I was trying to download "applications" to my desktop and I'm having trouble opening them. They are al .exe files and they won't open with anything I try. What am i missing here?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
.exe files are Windows applications. They won't run on your Mac unless you install Windows.

  • Don't laugh, but please help this new ipod user

ok. I am very computer illiterate and a new ipod user. It seems I cannot figure out how to "send" my 5th generation/video ipod MUSIC LIBRARY to the I-tunes library on my second computer ( i tried to make a playlist but it won't allow). I have downloaded all software from the ipod into both computers, but I cannot seem to get my ipod library onto my ibookG4 itunes library. Make sense? When you all are done laughing at this newbie, it would be great if someone could explain how I do this? It seems there should be a way to save my ipod onto this laptop? thank you very much

Well don't laugh too hard because I Had the same problem but with a Windows
technically its illegal to do that but there is a legitimate way to get around it
What you have to do is enable disk mode on your fifth generation iPod
and it acts as a huge storage device
Then Just copy all the music files into the disk mode
and take them off on your laptop
Just Make sure you don't sync or restore your iPod

I am a new iPod shuffle 4th Generation user and I cannot sync the music in my Windows Media play to my new iPod, can someone help?

    Hi Daisymae3,
The iPod shuffle does not use Windows Media Player to sync, it uses Apple’s iTunes application, available for free from this web site -
Apple - iTunes - Download iTunes Now
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
See also the manual for your iPod shuffle -
    User Manual iPod shuffle

Specifically Chapter 3 - Setting up the iPod shuffle.
iTunes is the free software application you use to set up, organize, and manage your content
    on iPod shuffle.

Hi can anyone help me. I have a apple macbook laptop OSX 10.5.8 . When i push print, it shows my printer but says cannot communicate with printer. (epson stylus nx125). Do I need new drivers? Please help .  regards Cindy

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're users here and do not speak for "Apple Inc."
Some basic printer troubleshooting steps before worrying about a printer driver:
    1. Have you tried turning the printer off and back on?
2A. Is the printer attached with a cable?
If yes, have you tried unplugging and re-plugging both ends of the printer cable?
If that does not help, can you test the printer with another cable?
2B. If your printer is not connected to the computer with a cable, have you tried restarting your printer (assuming wireless connection)?
Have you tried restarting your wireless router?
    3. Have you tried restarting your MacBook? (Be sure to save your work first.)
    4. Does the printer have ink? (Doesn't usually generate a 'communications error' though)
    5. Have you updated OS X or the program you're trying to print from recently?

Apple has a site for new users. Use it. Also, David Pogue is an excellent tech writer who has penned a series called the Missing Manual. I assume you've come to the Mac from the Windows world and he's written one especially for switchers. I've linked to the version for Mavericks (10.9) but if you have an earlier version of the Mac OS he's written a similar book for them as well.
