New line connection question

I am currently in the process of moving my exisiting line and broadband over from Sky to BT.
My current line is connected directly to an exchange which is over 5km away, resulting in very poor and very slow broadband. Even through streets right next to mine have infinity!
As my current line is an exchange only line (EO) I am not going to be able to get any sort of high speed broadband at any time in the near or distant future
Hence my question...
If i request to have a 2nd line installed at my property, is there any way that this line could be connected to a local street cabinet (three within a stones throw of my house) so that I could then get infinity.
Many thanks

It all depends on the current line plant.
If there are spare cables coming from the exchange via the same route your line takes, you'd be connected to one of them. if there are no spare pairs then OR MIGHT connect you to a cab but it's a very long shot.
There's no way to request this when the order is placed either.

I know. I actually passed an OpenReach van 500 meteres from my house today. Stopped and asked if there was any way, at all, the guy could help me out or check on the status of the BT marked manhole cover outside my house (<1 min away). Was told 'Sorry, not my job, can't help you, I'm here to sort out another property and I'm lost'. I said I fully appreciated he had other work, but was there any chance he could take just 5 mins to help me out. I was told 'no way, not my area, sorry'. Said that OpenReach would need to commission a 'survey' of my property to sort this out. Frankly, he couldn't get out of there quick enough.
Sad thing is, my neighbour had an Engineer out (as I was promised by BT) and it was all sorted in a few minutes and was simply activating a connection in the exchange box (or whatever it is) outside my house.
Crazy thing, is they will just end up sending another OpenReach van out to sort this out. At some point. Maybe.
As you say . . . OpenReach just do what they want. I don't blame this guy specifically, but it would be nice if he took a second out to help everyone out.
BT call centre, meanwhile, just helplessly say that they can't tell me any more for 36 hours.

  • New line connected today, someone else also gaven ...

Hi today my new line was connected, i then recieved a call from a random person telling me this was meant to be their number today, they say they got the letter saying the same numb as mine, now he says he has gaven this numb out to his patients as he is a doctor.
Can someone please explain to me how BT have managed to screw this new cnnection up so badly?
I called BT they say theres no record of them issuing this number to anyone else!!!
What a complete joke this is, can't even connect a line up without screwing up.
BT if your reading this, I demand an answer right now!

    Hi madevo,
When a landline order is placed a temporary number is allocated, but it's never guaranteed as it can change once the service is "live", and I'm guessing the caller was allocated the number in question when they originally ordered the service.
Customers should never give out the temporary numbers as they cannot be guaranteed, but by the sound of this the caller wasn't advised of this.
For some reason the number must have become spare (possibly because there was a problem with the original order) and when your line was activated the number in question was then given to you (numbers are allocated from a general “pool”, and the first available is given).
I don’t have any way of knowing how the number became spare from the doctor’s order, however as the number would have been temporary against his order, then become spare and it's now live against your account we wouldn't have a way of tracing it back to the doctor's order.
This is also assuming the doctor ordered the service with BT. if they ordered with a different provider we wouldn't be able to access the account at all - even if we had their account number - as it would be on another service provider's database.
I am sorry you were called up about this, and if you'd like me to check your order to make sure everything went ahead as it should have do drop me an email at [email protected]
    Thanks,

  • New line installation question

I live in a house that has never had a line connected, so I am having a new line fitted. I am having phone and infinity 38Mb. Will the installation engineer just fit one master socket to be used for the phone and modem, or will they fit a seperate point for the modem in another area of the house? If they do, would this be an additional charge?
    Thanks

So usually an extension would be counted as additional work then? In that case I may be better to just buy this DSL extension kit from ebay for £10 and do it myself. 15M BT ADSL INFINITY FIBRE OPTIC RJ11 TO BROADBAND MODEM EXTENSION CABLE LEAD

  • Drag line/connect question

    Hi,
Is it possible to make a drag line question:
Attached screenshot is what we want.
We want to drag a line from left to right and when the question is right, a picture pops up.
When it is wrong a sentence telling it is wrong will show.
is this possible within Captivate ?
    Joep

I managed creating matching questions for someone once (consulting task) using the interactive Drag&Drop widget from InfoSemantics. That was a question that had to lead to reporting, even with partial scoring which is not possible with the default matching question slides. And then you have total control of course. It means that you need knowledge of variables, advanced actions.
Do you need reporting, or a "zwart-wit" one if everything is correct? Or is just the appearance of the captions important? Maybe then the built in Drag&Drop will suit your needs.

  • Wireless vs. Hard line connection - Question

Hi. I've had my Mac Mini connect wirelessly for a month or so now. Today I ran a network cable directly from the Mac Mini to the back of my Router - I guess I'm hoping to increase performance of internet video playback. Would I see any performace improvements doing this?
So my wireless is on and I ALSO have this direct connection to my router. Do I have to do anything to ensure the Mac Mini uses the hard network connection instead of the wireless?
I don't want to turn off the wireless because I still want to connect to it wirelessly with some other devices, like my iPod Touch. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Reliability of the connection is the major advantage of hard-wired ethernet in your situation.
If there is a major mismatch between the speed your ISP provides you (Wide Area Network: WAN) and your internal Local Area Network (LAN), then you are correct that your LAN can't really speed up internet streaming. The WAN remains the bottleneck. Unless, reliability has been an issue. Then hardwired ethernet may improve streaming at times vs. wireless.
When dealing with LAN transactions between equipment in your house, hard wired ethernet will be faster than wireless, and more reliable.

  • Slow connection, rural location - new line

I live in a pretty rural location and used to have a capped 500kbps connection (wich gave us about 350 speed wise)!
I recently moved to ADSL max with BT and the initial profile was giving us about 1meg speed with a little bit of instablility but not bad.
Anyway - we have had constant line problems as we have an old exposed, worn line hanging between trees - had numerous call outs and repairs after broadband dropped, had noise on line, then no line at al etc etc etc.
Anyway - FINALLY BTOZ came and replaced a long length of the line.  The engineer banged on about what a big difference this would make, how speed and stability would be increased etc.
So - they 'appar' to have finished and it seems not to have made any difference.  I have a download speed of about 750 and daily disconnections.
    Router stats are:
    DMT Status
    No Defect
    Operational Mode
    G.DMT
    Upstream
    384
    Downstream
    1120
    SNR Margin(Upstream)
    6.0
    SNR Margin(Downstream)
    8.4
    Line Attenuation(Upstream)
    31.5
    Line Attenuation(Downstream)
    63.5
My question is - should a profile reset be done (on the DSLAM) to re-look at interveaving, my speed profile etc. not the new line is in?  I was hoping to get back up to at least a meg
    Thanks!

If all your line changes are very recent then your connection could be back in training mode for 10 days.  your attenuation of 63.5 is as high as your router reports but the actual attenuation may be higher which would give a lower speed - see here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/IPprofile.htm
    http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php
your profile is correct for your speed so to increase your profile your need to get a faster speed.

  • PHP MYSQL and DW Question: Invalid characters and new lines entry/viewing

    Hello all,
I have followed David Powers' two php/dw/mysql books and I've

    works fine
except for invalid characters being inserted into the

Is there a trick to cleaning up the data that a user may
    paste into a

    the data is
inserted or as it is inserted? Em dashes, en dashes, 'curly

    are giving me problems.
Also, when I enter new lines into the php page while I'm
    typing out
information for a record, these new lines are not being

  • Argh! New line not being connected, although BT Op...

    Hi,
New customer, new line ordered 03/08/11.  Existing phone provide is VM. There is a BT Master socket in house but socket condition unknown.
BT Engineer due to come out 19/08.  On 8:03 on 19/08, got a text to say they had cancelled the visit as socket & wiring exists and everything is active (phone & BB).
Except it's all dead.  Master socket, behind faceplate gives no dial tone or power to phone.  If I ring the line from a mobile, it rings, but nothing in the house.  Tried different phones etc.  There are 2 wires connected to the back of the master socket NTE5 plate.
So, 2 engineer callouts 19/08 and 20/08.  19/08 cancelled on day and 20/08 cancelled without notice.  Bear in mind I had paid and ordered an engineer visit.  Grrrrrr!
Thanks BT, is this the level of (in)competence I can expect over the next 18 months?  A

  • Questions about the new SBO2007 connection method

    Hi all
Anyone who can clear up the following programs for me:
1 - With the new DI connection method multible add-ons can share the same DI-API connection (1 add-on = 80 MB, 2 add-ons = 81.5 MB and so on). But is this sharing user-specific or machine specific... Imagine 10 user on a terminal server all running only one add-on. Will those 10 instances of the same add-on share DI-API connections and in total use 93.5MB (80 + 91.5) or 800MB (1080)?
2 - Am I correct in assuming that the new connection method works when creating internal add-ons (running within the SBO client) or will external add-ons benefit in any way?
3 - Does the SAP add-ons allready use the new connection system?
4 - In the explaination of the new DI connect method the help file states "It is highly recommended to use XML format of the DI-API.".. What does this mean?... The connection itself does not seem to have any xml involved.

    Hi Rasmus,
I haven't seen any official test results but here's what we have found so far:
    1) The shared DI API resource is stored within the SAP Business One client executable. This means that this grows by 80MB during the first connection but stays the same size as other addons connect. The addons themselves typically now take up 10-15MB (ie like an addon that only uses the UI API). On a Citrix or Terminal Server, as each user has their own SBO executable, the DI API connection will take 80MB+ per user session (assuming all addons are connecting using this new method).
    2) As far as I know, this new connection method is only available for applications that use the UI API to connect to the SBO client (the GetDICompany method is on the UI API company object and not part of the DI API).
    3) The SAP Fixed Assets and Outlook Integration addons do not use the new connection method (tested on patch 35). The rest I don't know about as we don't typically use them here in NZ. It would be really useful for SAP to make an official statement on this topic as it would definitely influence my decisions on using the new method.
    4) I'm not sure what they mean either :-\
The biggest problem I found with this new connection method is debugging. When writing an addon, each time I ran a new debug session, the SBO client executable would grow by 70-80MB as it created a new DI API connection. However, when the debug session ended, the SBO executable did not release the memory used. After 4-5 debug sessions, the SBO client was taking 1/2GB of memory and couldn't be closed. This meant I had to close and reopen SBO every 2-3 debug sessions, which was a bit of a pain. In the end I reverted to writing using the old connection method and changed it over as a last step. Not sure if I was doing something wrong or this is a weakness in the new connection method while developing.
I also read that SAP are advising that a shared DI API connection can lower performance in some cases.
    Kind Regards,
    Owen

  • Can I choose an exchange for a new line if equidis...

    Hi,
We are considering purchasing a new build property in the KA6 5HB postcode.
The sales centre at the property has two phone connections - one from the Prestwick exchange, and one from the Annbank exchange. The postcode for the sales centre is KA6 5HL which is 100 metres distant from the KA65HB postcode although this is not the way it is shown on the Openreach map.
Broadband speed in the sales office is 18Mbps down, 4Mbps up which would be acceptable.
The BT site states that 1-2Mbps is possible for this location?
The Prestwick exchange is due to be upgraded in December this year (shown as Coming soon), however the Annbank exchange is Under Evaluation so is unlikely to be upgraded anytime soon(if ever).
Is it possible to specify which exchange we would like to be connected to as part of the new line installation.
    Thanks

very unlikely if Openreach would even consider it and even if it could be done the costs could in the thousands to be done the site office which is showing the speeds you post would only be available as a fibre connection

  • New line at a new build

    Hi
On the 18/2/14 I ordered a new line and bb package to my new build property. My current Infinity 2 services were terminated on the 28/2/14 and I was given the standard 4 week wait to be connected back up again but on standard ADSL broadband as Infinity didn’t come up on the system yet (which it now does btw).
Everything was setup for the 27th March, I took the day off as holiday and no engineer turned up even though I was sent numerous txts and emails saying they would. No one contacted me and I got no explanation why this occurred. I rang up the next day and was told about some Openreach work that hadn’t been completed. Another update today and its now scheduled for completion on the 15/16th April so I assume I might be able to reschedule then if its completed.
That will mean 8 weeks without a phone line or bb yet I am continually charged (like I’m still living at my old address) for services I can not use at all. On the 3/3/14 a full payment was made, then on the 21/3/14 another which had discounts for line rental (I make an annual payment) which came out in £1.98 credit, but the breakdown of the bill has a charge for £25 for Infinity 2 to begin with which I don’t even have. I would of thought that as I have no services what so ever I should only be given credit each month for the line rental I have already paid for.
If possible could some one please check my order as I would like a refund for what I cannot use and terminate any further payments until my services have been installed (which could be anyone’s guess knowing Openreach timescales). I have no use of BT WIFI or BT Sport and as nothing is within my range.
    Regards
    Chris

  • Trying to get new house connected is a nightmare

    Hi,
Just moved house in September and made arrangements to get my phone and broadband service moved to my new address, got an appointment for the 25th and after numerous e-mail and texts to say they were coming and to make sure someone would be in they called the night before to cancel stating external works would need done and i would get an update in two weeks, bearing in mind the previous owner had a phone line, there is a pole outside the front door with a cable going to my house i was shocked when told there wasn't a line available for me from the pole or any other close by, anyway this has been going on for some time now, first they submitted drawings to the council for 3 way traffic lights that were accepted, then when the work was supposed to be carried out they came back with another excuses saying they then had to then submit plans to the council, we then got another date for 12th November and was assured that most of the cable work was complete and only a small section remained that was underground and requiring the traffic lights would take an hour, 3 men turned up hovered around outside the house and then disappeared again before i could get my shoes on and go out to chat to them, then told the following day that they could not complete the work for some reason that the cs girl didn't know then got a date for the 19th that was then changed later to the 24th then at 4am this morning get an email from BT saying they would be sending an engineer on the 25th September - whats that all about!! its getting beyond a joke i'm usually pretty patient but this is getting ridiculous, and to top it all off i am still getting charged for the services that havent been getting for the last two months.

  • New line with BT

    Hi all,
I've recently had my phone line and broadband with Sky cancelled, which are now inactive.
My phone line was on Sky's own network.
I have ordered a new line with BT today and have been given an activation date of 07 May. There will be no engineer attending and there was no connection fee.
My broadband was apparently due to be removed from my old Sky line on 13 May.
    My questions are:
Is this simply a physical changeover from Sky to BT at the exchange?
Will I be able to order broadband on the new line even though the broadband has not yet been removed from my old line?
Might seem like silly questions, but I'm definitely not a techie!
Apologies if this is in the wrong section.
    Thanks,
    David

    Hi Djwaugh
It sounds as if it is still on BT's network... as the date is very quick and there is no engineer required.
    It's a simple changeover.
Regarding broadband, you won't be able to reorder that until your line is back up and running and there are no 'tags' left on the line... best wait till 8th May to check to see if you can get broadband.
