New mac mini - magic trackpad - won't do initial pairing (hence no anything

So I just got a Mac Mini server, and I've only had laptops in the house up until now (so no USB keyboards or mice), so I got a Magic Trackpad and the wireless keyboard. Upon booting for the first time, I get the expected image to turn on the wireless mouse to pair, so I turn on the magic trackpad and... nothing. I turn it off, I turn it back on. I turn it on and hold the power button. I turn off the MacMini and restart and try again. I do a little dance to the Bluetooth spirits, and still nothing. Anyone have any ideas aside from go out and buy a wired mouse? (Note: I cannot go to preferences, as I cannot get past this initial waiting-for-bluetooth-mouse-screen.)

Probably, it is because the Magic Trackpad requires at least 10.6.4 (and an additional update), or 10.6.5 (out of the box): so, if the install disc is only 10.6.3 or less, maybe it won't detect the trackpad.
You could try first with a wireless (for example, the Magic Mouse works) or wired mouse, and install the trackpad afterwards, after having updated the OS to 10.6.5.

  • Bluetooth lags on new Mac Mini w/ Wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad

    Hi everyone,
I just bought a new mac mini (the basic model) and attached it via HDMI to a HD TV. I bought the mac wireless keyboard and magic trackpad to go with it. Everything works except that both the keyboard and mouse are consistently slow. Not quite to the point of un-useable, but very noticeable.
I've read that it might be radio interference with the bluetooth signal. To test this, I put my Macbook Pro right next to the new mac mini (while it and the screen were on) and paired the keyboard and mouse to the macbook pro. Everything was super fast, no lag - so that leads me to think the problem is with the Mac Mini. I've tried playing with all the bluetooth options, to no avail.
Anyone have any suggestions? I've also tried attaching a bluetooth magic mouse and had the same slowdown. Nothing seems to affect the lag, it's very consistent and probably around half a second between keystroke or mouse movement and it's reflection on the screen.
    Thanks,
    -Mike

    Hey All,
I've got the same issue with my Mac Book Pro and a new Samsung LED 3D TV. Its connected through a DVI out from the mac to a gold HDMI adaptor, then to HDMI into the TV. I've used this set-up with my last HDTV which was a Sharp LCD, and there was no lag and no issues.
I noticed that for me, the lag appeared on the TV, but not on the laptop, so I thought it might be the connection (If I went right to HDMI instead of an adaptor maybe it'd be better) but I don't think it is given that the last TV worked fine.
I then went to my display settings in the control panel on my mac and changed the refresh rate from 24 Hertz to 60 Hertz (NTSC) on the TV and the issue has pretty much completely dissappeared. Not sure why that was the default, but I imagine certain video and other media will play even smoother as well!
    Woo hoo!
Hope you all figure this out too!

  • My Magic Trackpad won't work on my Mac Mini?

My Magic Trackpad won't work on my Mac Mini? The cursor moves a little and then will not respond at all. Gestures do not work

Yes, it's one of the things that can interfere.  Here are some others including airport.  Try changing your access point to use 5 Ghz or a lower 2.4 GHz channel.

  • Magic Trackpad won't work with Magic Mouse on brand new 2011 27" i5 iMac

I have a brand new 2011 27" i5 iMac which I bought with Snow Leopard pre-loaded. Naturally, I included the new Magic Trackpad in my purchase, and though there were some problems with the device in SL - such as it going haywire without explanation - it generally worked, although battery levels were erratic (one day 80%, then an hour later 42%, then 80% again).
When I installed Lion I did a clean install after backing up to Time Machine - and a Super Dupered external drive. I had some difficulties trying to install Lion from an external flash drive so I deleted again and reinstalled SL, then reinstalled over the SL install I did (with no other software except Mac OS X 10.6.8 and other system updates to facilitate install). Rather than copying apps from my old SL drive, I downloaded fresh copies and reinstalled one by one. I don't use a lot of apps apart from Microsoft Office, browsers and iLife and have not installed any additional scripts, extensions or add-ons (like USB Overdrive). It's a pretty clean install.
Since then, although I'm generally happy with Lion, the Magic Trackpad won't work! It does work for a little while with basic gestures - mainly moving the cursor and scrolling - then it gives up the ghost and loses connectivity. I have done the following:
Disconnected and reconnected the MTP after turning it on and off. MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
Shut the computer down, pulled out the plug, waited two minutes, then started up again. MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
Run Onyx, shut down computer, then pulled out plug (see above).
Checked options in Universal Access, shut off "Ignore other devices when trackpad in use" (or whatever the option is). MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
Turned off the Magic Mouse. MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
But none of this seems to work! I know the MTP is connected because I can see it in the BT menu in the menu bar and also in System Preferences. I have noticed since upgrading that my permissions - which when I bought the computer were totally clean - now run lines and lines about "Library/Core Services" so I am unsure whether this is related. I also notice a lot of people are in the same boat as me, which makes me wonder if it's either a hardware issue or a release issue - after a week or so of totally silent running, my 2TB Hitachi HDD started up with the grumbly tum. I'd really appreciate any tips from anyone out there!

    Hi, marksaner
You could try installing the latest version of the Synaptics driver. Synaptics is the company that makes the UltraNav driver and drivers for many other computer brands. This driver should have the same functionality as the UltraNav driver, so there's no worry there. You can find the driver here.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • New mac mini won't start up...

I just got my new mac mini today and it won't start up. After some research I discovered that the icon on the screen is telling me to put batteries in my mouse. There are batteries in my mouse. I shut it down and restarted it again, making sure my wireless keyboard and mouse were turned on. That didn't work. Then I tried turning them on after I started the computer. That didn't work either. I'm sad.

I have had the same issue (new Mac Mini, client OS, new wireless keyboard and trackpad ... connected using HDMI cables through my receiver to my TV).
First I got stuck on a spinning doughnut right out of the gate. Phone tech support told me I needed a wired keyboard. While I didn't like the idea, I went down to the apple store to buy that and they told me there was something wrong with the Mini and to bring it in. Today I did took the unit in; they discovered a faulty harddisk and replaced the unit without much hassle (nice).
Before leaving the store, I told them what phone support had to say about requiring a hardwired mouse and keyboard for setup. They told me it used to be necessary but that is not so nowadays. I happily left the store expecting no other issues.
Now here I sit. My trackpad is recognized but my keyboard is not. I can't get past the nearly indecipherable screen showing me how to power up these devices for discovery and pairing because it doesn't recognize the keyboard. And since I don't have a wired keyboard anywhere in my house, I'm looking at my 60 minute roundtrip to the apple store. sigh
I'm most upset about that part. If they'd simply set my expectations that I need a wired solution for setup, I wouldn't like it but at least I'd know and wouldn't spend endless time wasting gas simply to get to step 2 of setup.
I've been a big fan of the iPhone an iPad but I have to say that Windows PC setup (while a tad slow) is MUCH more straightforward than this. At least I have some workaround options that get me moving. Works out of the box, my @#$.

  • New mac mini won't accept dvd's/cd's in the combo drive

    Hello friends:
i have a new mac mini that I bought about 2 months ago (Intel, 2.0 ghz). Everything was working fine until I went to put in a DVD today. The combo drive won't accept a disc. It's not that it won't read the disc, it physically won't suck it into the drive. Instead it just sits there. If I try and push it in, nothing happens... it just bounces back out at me as if pushed by a spring. And, no, there isn't already a disc in the drive.
Can anyone suggest how to get my combo drive to work again?

    Hi jrm27,
I have an older Mac Mini 1.66 GHz, but I haven't seen this problem.
I take it that the disc does go in a little way. I would think that that rules out that the drive thinks there's a CD already in the drive. I know that when I have a CD or DVD in the drive, the little doors (they're really there) are closed and won't let me insert a 2nd CD.
I presume that you have restarted your system since this started to occur?
When the system is rebooting, hold down the mouse button. This is supposed to force eject a CD. It might also trick your system into thinking there's no CD there, or resetting something.
Try different types of CDs or DVDs, just to make sure that there's not something screwy with the media that you are using. Try an old-fashioned music CD or something.
Are there any sounds the drive makes?
    David

  • I just bought a new Mac Mini 2.5 and it won't connect to the internet.

I got my new Mac mini set up but it won't load the connection, System Preferences Network says it's connected and I compared it to my old Mac Mini and everything matches up (IP address matches except last 3 digits).  I open Safari or iTunes and they try to connect but no luck, on Safari the blue bar moves in the address line but stops and nothing happens.  I'm on my old mini now so I I'm not having a problem wiht my provider, oh and I've got an ethernet connection to a Motorola surfboard.  Any idea what is wrong?

    Hello, might try this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
IFor 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
    Click OK.

  • Just setting up new mac mini however system seems stuck on Bluetooth at startup and not seeing new trackpad or keyboard both wireless?

My new mac mini seems stuck whilst launching for the first time - looking for bluetooth peripherals - they are a new trackpad and wireless keyboard - both in pair mode so I can't see what the issue is..Do I really need to find wired mouse and keyboard to set this up?

Hehehe... Yes, a freshly-booting Mac from the factory can get confused with all that wireless traffic. In the past I've been able to get new Macs to pair with a keyboard and mouse/trackpad by switching the keyboard/mouse/whatever off and then on again while the computer is attempting to find something to pair with. The computer will attempt pairing with the newly-activated device and otherwise pretty much ignore all the other Bluetooth chatter is sees.
That said, whenever I set up a Mac for someone, I always bring a USB keyboard and mouse with me. It makes the process faster and easier. I then set up their Bluetooth input devices later, using System Preferences.

  • IMovie won't run on brand new Mac Mini (Quartz Extreme message)

I just bought a new Mac Mini. The latest 2010 Mac Mini.

iMovie requires a graphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme. One or more of your graphics cards does not support Quartz Extreme.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hello All,
I'm actually on my second Mac mini in a month (I returned the first one) with the same problem. I didn't have Perian installed, and certainly not Windows Media. I also have the problem that when I turn the computer on, it freezes on the Apple logo and the spinning gear stops turning. I have to shut down, then when I turn computer back on, it goes directly to the log in window. It will work fine from there. And most times, iMovie will start no problem. I hope that I don't have to return this one as well, but I might have to.

  • New Mac Mini won't open DVD Player, I get an error

This is a brand new mac mini (latest model bought two days ago), just opened and tried to open DVD player without any media on the DVD drive and the DVD Player doesn't open and I get this error:
    There was an initialization error.
A valid video device could not be found for playback (-70017)
    What could that be?
    Wilfredo.

No. The DVD Player always open even if there is no media in the drive.
The problem was the Region. I needed to set the region on the drive, but the error message never told what was the problem, I had to figure it out myself.
    Wilfredo.

  • New Mac Mini won't recognize passcode for wireless keyboard

Just unboxed my new Mac Mini and have started the install process.  Made it to the wireless mouse ok, then the keyboard.  It finds the keyboard, gives me the passcode, then I enter it and press enter as requested, and nothing happens.  It just spins through the process again and again.  I have installed new batteries, turned all things on and off at random, and turned off bluetooth on all other devices that might be interfering.  Any ideas?

Take the batteries out of the keyboard
    Turn off the computer
Put batteries back in keyboard and hit the power button on the side
    wait 5 seconds
    turn on mini
go back through the setup process
    works every time for me

  • New mac mini system will not recognize wireless keyboard and trackpad.

My brand new mac mini system will not initialize properly.  The return on the track pad are not being recognized, although scrolling is. Any others find this?  Support could not figure this out on the phone.  They sent me out to get new batteries and now they are closed.  Batteries have been changed and still nothing.

My Mac MINI gave me one heck of a time trying to get it  to recognize my Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. both Apple brand.
I finally had to connect an old USB mouse and keyboard to get the silly thing to connect.
    Don't forget to repair permissions.
I also had to shut the computer down and start it back up a couple of times before it would connect.  I think it has to do with the new Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology.
I also turned off my Bluetooth devices and turned them on again, then I pulled the batteries out a couple of times and tried again and again.
I also put in new battries even thiough the ones I replaced were about a week old.
Finally, the MINI recognised the mouse and keyboard.
I wish I could tell you which thing did the trick.

  • New mac mini won't pair with new wireless keyboard

How do you set up a new mac mini with a new wireless keyboard bought separately ... computer does not see the keyboard.
I've seen this question asked before but the only answer seems to be to get a usb keyboard for set up. So do I need to go out and buy another keyboard to complete the set up or is there a way around this
    Thanks.
