New Mac Pro 8-core / D700 not much faster than an iMac... in PPro CC.

So.... my very preliminary testing with our new Mac Pro using the plugin I use most (filmconvert -FC) anyway, shows that Premiere CC needs more optimization for the dual GPUs. In fact, I'd say the CPU utilization is not up to snuff either.
I know FC only uses one GPU presently from the developer. That will change. In the meantime, using a couple of typical projects with that plugin as an example, I'm only seeing 25-45% speed up in renders over our maxed out iMac (late 2012, 27") exporting the same project. That's significant of course but not the 100%+ one would think we would be seeing at the least given the MacPro config of 8 cores and dual D700s. Premiere Pro CC seems in fact to never maximize CPU (never mind GPUs). I have yet, in my very limited testing, see it "pin the meters" like I did on the iMac.
Of course that's just testing now two short (under 5 min) projects, and it depends on what one is doing. Some stuff is much, much faster like Red Giant's Denoiser II or Warp Stabilizer VFX. The improvement there can be 3-4x faster anecdotally.  I used to avoid them for speed reasons unless absolutely needed a lot of the time but now they are fast enough to rely on quickly. Other stuff unrelated top PPro CC like DxO PRIME noise removal on RAW stills is much faster too, as is Photoshop CC.  Some effects like blur, sharpening, resize there are nearly instant now even on giga pixel files in Photoshop CC.
And of course FCPX is much faster on it but I hate the whole editing paradigm. The timeline is just horrid on it; simple things like replacing a word in someone's dialogue is a multi click, multistep process that is nearly instant in Premiere and most every other NLE. Just to try to see your whole timeline is a chore, to see what your edits and sound are in detail are problematic, trying to keep things in sync is a chore, and you can't even zoom your timeline window to full screen! If anybody has edited for any amount of time, I do not understand how they use FCP X. If they start with that program, for example if they are young, then that is a different beast.
I'm sure Adobe will improve over time. They have to to stay competitive. In the meantime I'll take my 45%... but I wish I saw much more improvement given the cost and hardware differential. Unfortiunately, for now, the mainstream reviews I have seen regarding PPro performance on this machine were right.

That statement about 4k/5k in Premiere CC with the nMP is false, insofar as performance goes.
I just tested 5K Red raw files just dragged into Premiere Pro CC (latest version). I expected this to be slow, given my HD experience. However, on my 8 core/D700, I can play 1/2 just fine, full speed. And I even can also do that with a very streneous plugin/filter attached - FilmConvert (in OpenCL mode), also at 1/2 which is quite impressive. I can even add a bunch of other Premiere filters and SG looks and it still stays at full speed at 1/2.
Ironically, this is quite faster than FCPX which can't seem to play back 5K at all with that filter attached (it doesn't stutter, but it's not smooth... low resolution at "best performace" and reduced frame rate). Even if I remove all filters FCPX plays back Red 4k (again not transcoded) about the same as CC at 1/2, but with a seemingly lower resolution to keep it smooth.  It's a head scratcher. It's like Adobe's Red handling is much better coded than Apple's in this case.
Or... it has to be attrituable to that particular plugin (other FCPX motion-based plugins don't suffer the same fate and are fast). But either way, filter or no, Premiere Pro CC is definitely and sharper looking at 1/2 when cutting Red 4k/5k with no transcode, playback in real time, than FCPX which needs to bump it down to what looks like a 1/4 or less rez to keep it smooth. So I have no idea what is going on.
This experience is the opposite with HD, where FCPX is significantly faster (using the same filters/plugin, using C300 Canon XF for HD and 4 and 5K RedRaw alternatively).  Premiere seems slower in HD than FCPX by a good amount in HD and signficantly faster with Redraw 4k. Go figure.

  • New Mac Pro (6 core, D700, 32GB), Mavericks 10.9.4, dragging and scrolling lag, overall system bugginess

Since upgrading to 10.9.4 i've been beset with numerous bugs and general odd system behavior.
Previous to this update I had experience lag when using my Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. For example when doing a preview render in Maya the tablet would become unresponsive and laggy. This never occurred on my old Mac Pro 2008.
I noticed there was an update to the Wacom Drivers (6.3.8-2) so I did the update. After updating I've been experiencing dramatically slow screen redraw. So whenever I drag a window or scroll, the image stutters, flickers and lags as it tries to redraw to keep up with mouse position. This makes it impossible to use the computer.
I uninstalled the Wacom drivers and the lag and redraw errors persist. I looked at Activity Monitor to if it was some other system resource like Spotlight that was momentarily hogging resources. The only thing I notice is that the dreaded "kernel_task" seems to be using a lot of ram (1.46 GB) and cpu time (usually at the top of the list). Also, "com.apple.IconServicesAgent" seems to be using a lot of CPU time (usually #2 in the list).
I'm at a loss as to what to do about this other than re-install everything from scratch. I've read through numerous forum threads about the kernel_task issue but nothing seems to apply to the New Mac Pro.
Hopefully someone has some experience with these issues and some good advice for fixes.

  • Using the New Mac Pro (can) - AE will not let me use Race Traced 3-D

Using the New Mac Pro (can) - AE will not let me use Race Traced 3-D
Hi, I'm using the new Mac Pro
    2.7 GHz 12-core Intel Xeon E5
    64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
    AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
    OSX 10.9.2
    I'm using After Effects 12.2.1.5
When I attempt to invoke the race trace 3D renderer in a comp, I get this error
"After Effects Error: Ray-traced 3D: Out of paged mapped memory for ray tracer. Your project may exceed GPU limits. Try closing other applications. Try updating the CUDA driver. (5070::2)"
My preferences are set to use the CPU for Raytraced 3D since I do not have an Nvidia card.
So, obviously there is an issue here in that it thinks I have an Nvidia card.
I know (or assume I know) the cause for this is that when I set up this machine, I used Apple's migration assistant to move most of my data over from the previous gen Mac Pro which DID have a CUDA card.
So my question is, what files can I delete/reset to cause After Effects to no longer look for CUDA files that do not exist on this machine?
I do not have the CUDA control panel in System Prefs, so THAT did not carry over.
Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

    > I know (or assume I know) the cause for this is that when I set up this machine, I used Apple's migration assistant to move most of my data over from the previous gen Mac Pro which DID have a CUDA card.
Ugh. That causes so many problems.
The first thing to try is deleting the CUDA frameworks from your Mac: Look in /Library/Frameworks for the CUDA.Framework and get rid of it.

  • Switching an old dual 1.8 to a new mac pro 8 core questions

    hi
Tomorrow i am getting a new Mac Pro 8 core 2.8, the basic model, 2 gigs ram (for now) and the on 320 gig HD. I am not a great mac person, i used my old one for some final cut express stuff and that was about it. so i was wondering if someone could answer these questions for me
    1) will final cut HD load fine on the new one in terms of licenses? in that, will that license or serial number i have used on the old one be ok on the new one?
    - same things for aperture, these are really the only 2 programs i have and really need on the new one, till i move up to final cut full
    2) i have an older "projects" western digital HD with the projects, pics etc on it, can i swap that HD into one of the new slots till i get another newer drive? its sata, but i am not sure what speed?? its probably 3 years old now
    3) what exactly does the new mac pro come with?? in the apple store it really doesn't go into it, i have ilife 05 on my old one, is it worth getting the new one? does it come with things like that?
    4) i mainly do home movie's and video editing on my mac, if i end up with final cut studio 2 i think it is, what is the recommended RAM?
    5) where is the best place to buy more RAM and HD's for the mac? i will need or want 3 more 500 gig min, 7200 speed drives and probably 2-6gigs more ram.
ok, that should confuse me pretty well for a while
    thanks for any help!

    1. As long as the software is not installed on more than one CPU you are not in violation of the software license. You will use the same serial number.
    2. Any SATA drive can be installed in the computer.
    3. New computers come with OS X and iLife pre-installed. Also trial versions of iWork, MS Office, and Quicken's Quick Books.
    4. I would recommend at least 4 GBs of RAM.
    5. You can buy RAM from any online vendor that has the proper type of RAM with the proper heat sinks. Suitable vendors are Data Mem and MacSales.com. Hard drives are available at any number of online vendors such as:
    MacSales.com
    Buy.com
    NewEgg.com

  • Premeire CC 2014 not playing clips or timeline with New Mac Pro Late 2013 D700

I have used premeire cs5 and cs6 and never had this issue
I just bought a new mac pro and installed the trial of Premeire cc 2014
I import clips like normal, set my sequence and the play button does not work
in the viewer or in the timeline.  Can seem to make anything work
also I am on 10.9.5 which from what I can see should be fine.

    Hi Ernie,
Try this: create a new user with Admin privileges and see if you can get Premiere Pro to playback video once more.
    Thanks,

  • New Mac Pro & PP CC 2014 "Not Responding" when exporting....

OK, this is a weird issue.
    Short Version:
    Project exports fine on PC
Premiere Pro CC 2014 stops responding on new Mac Pro just after clicking "Queue"
Premiere Pro CC 2014 renders the sequence fine when I click on "Export"
    Details:
I have a week old 4 core, 12 Gig ram,  Mac Pro running OSX 10.9.4 with the latest CC 2014 installed 1 week ago.
I have a  sequence (the content) with Lumetri, Ultra Key, Track Matte and Lumetri (warm). This sequence is nested into an other sequence (holds the watermark titles and branding)
The project exports and renders fine on my 5 year old i7 pc.
However on my new MacPro every time I go to export that sequence by clicking on "Queue" AME CC 2014 starts and Premiere locks up. Activity monitor show Premiere as "Not Responding"
I force quit Premiere to exit.
I don't have this issue with other video projects. I have disabled OpenCL in Premiere and AME with no different outcome.
I can export the nested sequence by it self with out any issues. If I remove the nested sequence, the main sequence exports just fine.
I have also checked and repaired disk permissions - no difference.
However, If I click on "Export" in Premiere it starts to render and Premiere Pro does not lock up.
It looks like an issue with PP handing off to AME.
How can I troubleshoot this? I need to queue up 200+ videos to render in the next month....

That statement about 4k/5k in Premiere CC with the nMP is false, insofar as performance goes.

  • After Effects CC and new Mac Pro with FirePro D700

    Hello
I'm about to purchase a new Mac Pro, 64GB RAM, SSD 512, Two AMD FirePro D700. Working with post-production software basically use Adobe After Effects CC, my doubt is whether the normal After Effects continue working on this new machine. If it is fully compatible with this video card and if all resources will have a better income. And what can you tell me about the Ray-Traced with these video cards.
    Thank you.

    • Adobe does not support AMD cards with their ray-trace renderer, and are unlikely to do so in the future.
    • Cinema 4D Lite, included with AE CC, uses the CPU, not the GPU, for rendering.
    • The third party plugin Video Copilot Element 3D is GPU dependent, and they have pledged support for the Mac Pro display cards.
    • Adobe has hinted at substantial improvements to AE multi-threading efficiencies in a coming release.  The implication is that more CPU cores will be better utilised in the future.
I will be buying a new Mac Pro soon too.  What the above tells me is that After Effects will continue to be best served by faster and more multi-cored CPUs, rather than better GPUs.  For my money, I will stick with the cheaper D500 GPUs, and get a better CPU option.

  • Boot Camp issues in a new Mac Pro 6 core Westmere

I'm trying to install WinXP SP2 on a drive in bay three of my new Mac Pro (with four internal drives). The boot camp instructions state that a boot camp installation should be done only on a drive in the lowest available numbered bay and that I should remove all the drives in the lower numbered bays in order to do the install. If my OS X system and the boot camp utility are on the hard drive in bay 1 and I'm trying to do an install on a drive in bay 3, this presents a problem. Apple tech support suggested that I swap the drives in bay 1 and 3 prior to the install and then swap them back, which I did. This seemed to work. The startup disk control panel in OS X seems to have no trouble dealing with setting my startup disk to either Mac OS X (in bay 1) or Win XP (in bay 3) after the drives were swapped back. However, I have problems on the windows side. The boot camp control panel in Win XP lets me set Mac OS as the startup disk but I get a permanent black screen at startup requiring me to hold in the power button to shut off the computer and then restart it. Afterwards, I can't start up in OS X unless I hold the option key down at startup and manually pick OS X. I can then reset the startup disk to the OS X in the Mac OS startup disk control panel but this never works from inside XP.
Two questions that I would greatly appreciate answers for:
    1. Do you need to install windows on a drive in the lowest available numbered hard drive bay in a Mac Pro?
    2. Is the hard drive swap trick I did above confusing the boot camp control panel in XP so that it can't figure how to set Mac OS X (switched back to bay 1) as the startup disk? If the disk swap trick is causing the problem, is there another way to do a boot camp install on a drive that is not in the lowest numbered drive bay?
    Thank you very much!
    Steve

Support for IE6 is gone. IE9 is coming in beta in Sept. And yes, IE8 can run sites in compatibility mode.
My feeling is those apps that require an old and buggy browser like 6 should be headed for the trash.
XP Mode IS XP in hardware virtualization VM. You may want Windows 7 Pro, for XP Mode but also if you have two physical cpus.
Tech support has been known to give conflicting info on a question, or throw up their hands, and seem really like they need to use Windows first, rather than gain a rep for being clueless and unable to help customers.

  • New Mac Pro, Quad-Core or 8-Core?

I need to decide whether to purchase a Quad-core or 8-core new Mac Pro. Using the computer for commercial and fine art work, in Photoshop CS4, Lightroom 2.0, and InDesign CS4. (No video.) Is there any advantage in the 8-core?

Photoshop probably won't benefit much from twice the cores - but they will help when running multiple apps simultaneously. I have a first generation Mac Pro 2.66 and am (still) perfectly happy with the performance.
About the only app in your list that would probably benefit is Lightroom (or ACR), when processing RAW files. My four cores are fairly pegged when processing files from a 1Ds MK II.

  • How fast is the new Mac Pro 8 core comparred to Mac Pro 4 core?

    Hi,
I consider to update my 1.5 year old Mac Pro 2.66 ghz (4 core) to a Mac Pro 8 core. I use this machine as the center in my studio running Logic 8. I use a lot of V.I. and plugs.
Can anyone tell me anything about the gain in performance that is possible upgrading to an 8 core?
Or show me where to find information. MacWorld use to be my resource in that kind of matters, but they never use Logic as a test program.
    Thanks in advance!

    Musicmind.dk

    Glenn,
The new Mac Pro will be faster at everything when compared to your older PowerMac, but I think the first 2 items you list will be more dependent upon drive speed.
    1. The FSB and memory are faster in the new Mac Pro, but reading from the CD will only be as fast as the optical drive can handle.
    2. How fast the TIFF file is displayed in the Finder may be more dependent upon the read speed of the hard drive than the processing speed required to create the thumbnail view displayed by the Finder.
    3. Working in CS3 should definitely be faster. Even though you didn't want a response that linked to a test, the following BareFeat test should show how much faster CS3 is on the new Mac Pro.

  • New Mac Pro and Cores

The way that I see the new Mac Pro being advertised is that it is one processor with 4,6,8,12 cores.  Is this saying that cores are as good as processors now.  For example, my current Mac Pro has 2 Xeon quad cores, with a total of 8.  It seems to me that a dual processor with 6 cores would be better than a single processor with 12 cores, unless cores have taken on a whole new meaning.  I was under the impression that a core had to share resources within a processor. Maybe resources are no big deal now, but could someone try to explain this ?
    thanks

They've been pushing to integrate many cores on a single die for a long time now.  A big reason behind it is that by combining all cores on a single chip, they can drastically reduce I/O latency.  Makes sense when you think about it - all cores have immediate access to a single common memory bus and cache instead of having to split I/O across two or more chips for the same number of threads.
It also allows them to reduce the overall power demand quite a bit.
This trend has been going on for years now - the dual multi-core cpu machine was in some ways merely a stop-gap method to put more cores in a machine until they could figure out how to put more cores on a single chip.
Long ago now, places I used to work at loved SGI machines because they were one of the leaders at integrating multiple cpu machines into single massive shared memory systems, but the single greatest impediment to performance was the hardware and software that went into coordinating memory use and I/O across all the cpu's in the shared architecture.  Putting everything on a single chip immediately gets passed almost all of those limitations.

  • Extremely Loud Fan Noise Brand new mac pro 12 core 2.93

The fans of my brand new mac pro start making a sound like a wind tunnel several times a day, and won't stop till I shut off the mac.
Fan stats are like this when it makes that sound:
    PCI  799rpm
    BOOSTA  5048rpm
    BOOSTB  5188rpm
    Exhaust  2709rpm
    Power sup.. 599rpm
    INTAKE 2697rpm
Anybody any idea what could be wrong?

Hi, I had the same problems. I had to have replaced the fan that was broken.

  • My Mac Pro (8-core) does not wake up after sleep

The most times my mac pro goes to sleep he won't wake up on hitting the keyboard or the power button. There is some noise as if the harddisc is waking up but the screen stays dark and the power light which first lightens up and down like in sleep modus is fully lightened. I have to make an improper shutdown.
    Diagnostic message is
    12.01.10 15:37:34 configd[15] Sleep: Platform Failure - AC
    com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.powermanagement.sleep

    com.apple.message.result: Failure
    com.apple.message.uuid: 171DDEB4-6C08-40FB-8F8D-9E0BA393A033
    System log says:

Has anyone an idea what can be the cause for this behaviour?
    Thanks a lot

Yesterday when I started up my Mac Pro I noticed that it sure seemed loud. I normally never shut it off, so I hadn't noticed that it was getting pretty loud. Then, for the first time since I've been having the wake up problem, it went to sleep as I was surfing the web. This time instead of just shutting it off and restarting, I decided to reset the SMC. I then figured since I had everything disconnected I'd take a look at the GPU and clean the dust out of it. After vacuuming, being real careful to not fry anything with static, I put it into a different slot than before. Plugged everything back in and started it up. First thing I noticed was the volume of the GPU fan was much quieter than it has ever been, no joke. I haven't shut it off in almost 24 hours and it hasn't gone to sleep at all. I've read other posts on the net that claimed the SMC reset and moving the card to a different slot didn't fix the problem for very long, so I'm hoping that isn't what fixed it. I'm hoping it was just dirty, as I have already had to replace 2 GPU's in 2 years and I can find many other things to spend money on. Now more than ever since the only card I'd want that Apple offers is $460. I hope this helps you, and me for that matter.

  • I am trying to connect my LaCie thunderbolt 2 5big drives to my new Mac Pro.  They will not mount.  If I unplug them and plug them into my MBP they mount immediately

I have 2 LaCie Thunderbolt 2 5Big drives.  I have been using them successfully with my mbp.  I just purchased a Mac Pro and plugged them in and they will not mount.  I am stumped as how to get the Mac Pro to recognize them

This is the Mac Pro black cylinder, late 2013 model?
Have you tried one at a time? Have you tried different ThunderBolt ports?
What display are you using and what port is it plugged into? You may want to be sure your drives and your displays are not on the same bus.
