New WD Hard Drive Installed - Defective? How to Fix? Please Help!

Hello,
I have a Mac Pro that I bought in March of 2008 (refurbished form Apple). Last week I bought a new internal hard drive for it (Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB Hard Drive SATA3G / 7200 / 32 MB. (My original hard drive is 250GB SATAT 3G / 7200 rpm / 8 MB.)
I installed it in bay 2 and successfully formatted it. Ever since it has been in the computer, I hear loud buzzing sounds coming from it. They grow louder and then die away (it takes about 5 seconds for this cycle to happen). This cycle then repeats itself about every 30 seconds. Sometimes the buzzing cycles will get quieter and quieter until they stop all together, and then will start back up again. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why this happens. Does anyone know what may be going on or if this is a defective drive and I should return it? Any help is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you so much!

We call it case or drive hum. And it seems like a harmonic clash of two devices, or the 2nd hard drive causing the case itself (metal case).
There are shock absorbent washers on the side metal door.
Drive is attached and firmly installed and the latch on the back is securely in down and lock position.
And of course it still happens.
Me, I'd pull the old inefficient 250GB drive with 8MB cache, the Seagate 7200.9s that some shipped with were horrible performance and noise).
What I do with drive is run it through WD Lifeguard in Windows a couple times (Extended Test, full format instead of quick).
Some people sought out drive sled anti-vibration washers to fit to the sled (can't change the height though in order to fit properly).
Turn off "allow drives to spin down when not in use" if on.

  • My old iMac broke so i got a new hard drive installed. How can i retrieve my old purchased items?

    hiya
got a new hard drive installed and couldn't retreive anything off my old hard drive
can i get my old purchased items from itunes
    thanks

    Hi hopscotch,
Log into the iTunes store and do a search to find your previously purchased items. Click the "Buy" button, and put in the same iTunes id and password that you originally used to purchase. A dialogue box will come up indicating that you have already purchased this item and do you want to download it again for free....
Say yes, and it will be re-downloaded to your Mac.
    Hope this helps!

  • How can I resize partition? - New larger hard drive installed

    Hello,
The hard drive on my MacBook Pro recently died on me (just past my Apple Care warranty - lucky me).  I sent it to an authorised reseller/repair place and they installed a new hard drive for me - replacing my old 250GB with a nice new 500GB.  The problem is when they copied over the disk image from my previous hard drive they did not scale up the image (yeah, not so happy bout that).  Now I find myself with a 500GB hard drive with a 250GB partition called Macintosh HD and 250GB of unused/unusable space.  On top of that I'm just starting to get messages saying boot disk nearly full.  How can I resize the "Macintosh HD" partition to use the entire disk?  I've tried using disk utility, clicking on the main drive, going to the partition tab and dragging the Macintosh HD partition to use the entire disk but after a few seconds of a message saying "waiting for disk to reappear" it returns to the same 250GB size.  Running OSX 10.9.3.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks all!

See the tips in pounding's section on using Disk Utility:http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html and you could also take the route of buying an external hard drive (a great idea of maintaining a backup), format that drive for Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), clone the startup disk to that drive, then boot from the external, erase and format the internal, then clone the external back to the internal partitioned as you want.

  • How to sync iPhone 4 & 4S after new Mac hard drive installed?

The hard drive on our Mac crashed recently.  After we had it replaced, we can't load new music from iTunes to either my iPhone 4 or to my wife's iPhone 4S.  What do I need to do to get this to work?
Also, we had issues before syncing 2 iPhones to 1 computer - combined contacts, resulting in duplications and my apps showing up on her phone.  Any suggestions to avoid this from happening again?

No computer backup which should include your iTunes library, photos, documents, and any other important data?
When you say you can't load new music on either iPhone, this should mean you are getting a warning message that all iTunes content on the iPhones will be erased first?
Each iOS device synced with iTunes has its own sync preferences with iTunes. If you were syncing contacts with the same Address Book with each iPhone, contacts will be synced between both iPhones and the Address Book.
If the same apps are selected under the Apps tab for the iPhone sync preferences with each iPhone, the same apps will be transferred to each iPhone. Each device has its own sync preferences with iTunes.
If you are sharing the same iCloud account on each iPhone with contacts turned on for over the air syncing with the iCloud account settings on each iPhone, contacts will be synced between the two iPhones.
If you are sharing the same iTunes account or Apple ID on each iPhone, there are settings at Settings > iTunes & App Store under Automatic Downloads to automatically download music, apps, books, and app updates downloaded with another OS device sharing the same Apple ID for iTunes and App Store purchases/downloads.

  • How do i put movies on my hard drive into itunes? so frustrated please help

I just got my 80G iPod and i cant seem to figure it out. Please help.

Well my buddy has his own movies on his iPod that he did not buy from the iTunes Store(i cannot call to ask him how), and the guy at the Apple store told me that yes it is possible to put your own movies onto your iTunes by converting the movie to the right format- and he said that you can purchase Quicktime Pro and it will make it the right format- but i was wondering if there was a different way.

  • Hard Drive and RAM upgrade gone wrong - please help!

I have a 2+ year old Mac Mini Core Solo that I recently decided to upgrade. Originally it had a 80GB hard drive and 512MB of RAM and I installed a 250GB Western Digital drive and upgraded to 2GB of RAM.
Everything went smooth with the reinstall of OSX and the Mini was actually working, Internet was working etc. I was in the process of downloading and installing all of the Mac SW updates and that went on for several minutes, it actually got through most of them and then a screen came up to tell me to restart the computer. I did and then got the same screen. Which was the gray screen with the restart message and a message like this:
panic (cpu 0 caller 0x00398C43); unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI"
(Then there was a bunch of hexidecimal debugging jibberish and then some kernel version info.)
So I held down on the option key while doing the restart and tried to start from the internal disc and also start from the install disc. I can get to where I've reinstalled the first disc again, but then when I have to restart the computer to load the second disc I get the gray restart screen again with the above info.
During one of the attempts I brought up utilities and did a scan of the internal HD for defects and all the repair steps but it always said that everything was fine. When I bring up the general computer info it shows that I have 2GB of RAM. So it recognizes the two items that I installed.
So what do I do now? I am stuck on this issue and out of ideas, I havent tried to put back in the old hardware to test it, (but I would prefer not to as that doesnt really help me with the new stuff I bought).
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to offer as much detail as possible in case there is something in there that triggers an idea with someone. I dont live in a huge city so theres no apple store within several hours drive from here.
Can anyone help me with this? Thank you!

    Thanks for all the help.
It is a kernel panic and unfortunately it can be caused by a bunch of things. But I think I have it figured out for now.
My first step was to put the old RAM back in with the new HD, no change with the problem.
Then I put the old HD back in with the old RAM (original config) and everything was back to normal.
Then I tried the new RAM with the old HD and everything is also good. (and faster!)
So it would appear that the new HD was flakey and needs to go back to OWC.
Hey, I'm a pro at taking apart and rebuilding a Mini now!
    Thanks again for the help,

  • Hard Drive died and Apple replaced. Please help me reinstall.

My hard drive failed in my G5, and it was replaced by Apple under the Protection Plan. I was running 10.4.4 at the time, but Apple has installed 10.3 on the new disk. I just picked up my G5 from the Apple store and need some help.
I have a cloned backup that's (unfortunately) a year old on an external drive. I was doing nightly backups of my mail, safari settings and a folder to the same external drive with Backup using incremental backups. So the year old clone doesn't have all the files that have been updated since it was made.
I'm confused about how to get back up and running. Do I update the OS on the new drive first by reinstalling Tiger, updating to 10.4.7 and then start dragging things from the clone? Or should I copy my user folder from the clone and then drag newer files in? Or should I just clone the clone back to the new drive?
I rreally need to get up and running so I can begin to recreate the year's worth of illustrator files that I lost ...I've learned a BIG lesson here and will put into place a proper backup system as soon as possible.
I sure would appreciate any help.
    Ellen
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   PowerBook G4 12"

Install Tiger and then download and run the updaters to get you all back to 10.4.7, etc. From here, I'd drag user data from the outdated clone to the new drive. Be careful about copying the library folder. You probably don't want to overwrite anything that's already there - you'll be replacing a newer file with an older one. But I'd go ahead and copy the contentsof each folder inside the personal drive of the cloned to the new one. By that, I mean, don't copy the Documents folder - copy the contents of the documents folder to the new documents folder.
Since your clone is really outdated you may be better off installing your applications rather than copying them - especially since some aren't likely to appreciate being copied. At least having already copied your preferences, many of the programs will already be serialized.

  • Hard drive issues with early 2011 13" please help!

    Hello everyone,
I'm new here but I need immediate help! I'll try to make the story somewhat short:
    I have a macbook pro early 2011 13".
    - Closed my lid one day (I did not make any changes or installed anything new recently) and upon reopening many hours later, the system was frozen.
    - Did a hard shut off and upon turning it on, I get the crossed out circle.
    - Recovery HD also gave me the same crossed out circle.
    - Used internet recovery and formatted/partitioned the drive.
(Note that the drive in the bay at the moment is a Kingston HyperX SSD, not the OEM Samsung HD as I am actually using that as my secondary hard drive in my CD drive bay, which has been working fine the entire time before and during everything)
    - Tried to reinstall Lion from internet recovery but it wouldn't detect the SSD.
    - Strange, so I decided to install Lion onto an external hard drive and installed Mavericks onto the internal drive from there, successfully too.
    - Same results (crossed out circle) upon booting into the internal drive (likewise for the recovery HD).
    - I pulled out the drive and popped it into an enclosure and it could boot up from there.
    - Took it a step further and purchased an additional SSD, partitioned it and installed Mavericks on it via the external hard drive (not the SSD in the enclosure)
    - I can boot up from the new SSD, however it is extremely sluggish and freezes every few seconds with the spinning beach ball.
I am about to reinstall a newly downloaded copy of Mavericks onto the new SSD to see if it will fix the issue (which I doubt)
Could it be a problem with the drives or is it the SATA cable that is malfunctioning?
I'm not sure whether or not it is worth spending so much time repairing it because I've already spent a good three or four days getting this far.
Are the parts, repairs, hard drive replacements worth it or should I just replace it?

Did you format the external drive for use with OS X?
Open Disk Utility. Does Disk utility see the connected drive?
Format it to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • Hard drive failed.  Several questions.  Please help. :)

Okay, so my hard drive suddenly disappeared. When I restarted via DVD, the hard drive clicked repeatedly. My hard drive is dead. RIP.
    I got my PB in June '04. It's a 1.5ghz. I got the three-year CompUSA warranty.
So I drove my PB the 120 miles to the CompUSA where I bought it. They said they'd call me when they look at it.
So here are my questions. I'd appreciate any answers you many have.
    1. My hard drive just quit out of nowhere. I noticed it when trying to wake my PB from sleep. Then, like I said, it began clicking after a restart. Does this indicate a mechanical failure, and if so, is there a good chance that the data is recoverable?
    2. Has anyone had CompUSA do a data recovery? They offer it for $99. If my hard drive allows it, is this my best option?
    3. When CompUSA installs a new hard drive under warranty, will it be the same kind? Or is there any chance I'll get an upgrade in capacity or RPM?
Thanks to anyone who has had a similar experience and can maybe answer these.

Thanks Justin S. That's my name too.
Donald: I realize that CompUSA is not very Mac-centric. But it's the closest place to my home that sells Macs, and I wanted to try before I bought. I would love it if I could do all this through my friendly neighborhood Apple store, but alas, Amarillo doesn't appear to be in line for one.
I hve the CompUSA thre--year warranty, so I had to take it back there to get fixed. I have no idea if they know what they are doing. Hopefully so.
I think the $99 data recovery deal means they will back up your existing data to other media if they have to initialize your HD. I am sure it doesn't apply if they have to do actual "data recovery" - that is, resuscitating a damaged platter or something.
The reason I thought it MIGHT apply to me is, it sounds like this is a mechanical problem, not a problem with the actual hard disk. I just thought perhaps getting data off a mechanically disabled disk might be less expensive and less intensive than trying to rescue data from a lot of damaged 1's and 0's.
    Thanks for your answers!

  • Toshiba External Hard Drive not recognized by computer. Please help!

I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have an external hard drive and it will not show up in "My computer" when I plug it in. I have tried other USB drives and other computers. I am starting to think it is a hardware issue but I don't want to lose hope. The blue light is coming on when you plug it in but it doesn't blink and there is no noise whatsoever. Is there anything I can do to fix this issue so that I can recover the information on it? Thanks in advance for any help. It is greatly appreciated.
Additional information: I'm not sure how old this thing is but the model number is HDDR160E03X.

Same problem: I can't see my Toshiba PH3100U-EXB (Gen 2) external hard drive when I plug it in. After awhile I get this error message (see attachment): USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. FOr assistance in solving this problem, click this message."
When I click it, I get a list of USB ports and devices, with Unknown Device in bold face. No real information there.
Yes, I ran Disk Management and the Toshiba did not show up when I plugged it in and hit Refresh.
Does it make a difference that the last time I used the external hard drive, we were in Windows XP and now we're in Windows 7?
Please help! It's not just the backing up I'm worried about...it's being able to retrieve files later!
    Thanks!

  • Hard Drive Volume Needs to be Repaired - Please help!

I actually posted this question before, so if you happen to read this for the second time, I do apologize for that. The reason I am posting again is because I couldn't solve the problem, and when I called Apple care today, they asked me to extend my Applecare to 3 years first or pay a one-time $49.99 fee (I bought my mbp in May). I understand this process, but right now I do not have this budget so I need to find help here. I really appreciate all your help in advance.
I ran Disk Utility the other day, and while verifying and repairing the "Disk permissions" seemed to work okay, when I clicked "Verify Disk," a pop-up windon said (I don't quite understand what the following message means):
    First Aid failed
Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
....and the disk utility screen showed:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
However the "Repair Disk" buttom is faded grey and inactive, so I couldn't repair the HD volume right away. I tried to insert the Installtion CD and started up the computer by pressing down "c" in order to start up and repair the HD using the CD. However, even though I was finally able to see the active "Repair Disk" buttom in the "install mode" with the CD inserted, when I clicked the repair buttom, it still showed the exact same message as I mentioned before (the bold texts). I then guess I couldn't repair the volume HD this way either.
The other thing I don't understand is I actually ran the Apple Hardware Test using the installation CD too, but after both normal and extended check, it said my HD is fine - there's no problem found. So I really don't know what is causing the Disk Utility message and the HD volume failure.
Could someone give me sugesstions what to do to fix the problem? I really really appreicate all kind of assistance! Thank you very much!
    17" MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Claire, the message you received when you ran Disk Utility's disk repair routine from the Installation Disc 1 simply means that there are problems with your drive that Disk Utility can't fix.
It's possible (but not certain) that the current full version of Tech Tools Pro <http://www.micromat.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=164&Itemid=8 5> could repair your hard drive. But you would have to buy the application.
For no-cost approaches here are two suggestions:
1 It's possible (but not likely) that simply doing an Archive & Install from your Installation Disc 1 might fix the problem. If you don't have a convenient way to back up all your data to an external drive or DVD, it may be worth a try.
2 A complete erase (using the "zero" option in Disk Utility), followed by installation of the OS from your Installation Disc 1 should get the drive back in good shape (as it passed Hardware Test). This will of course erase all your applications and data files, so they should first be backed up somehow.
    Good luck.

  • Projects from external hard drive not opening on desktop. Please help.

I use my external hard drive to create, edit and save all my imovie projects. In this external drive I have all my raw clips, events, projects etc.
My home computer is my primary place of work, and I am now trying to open a half edited project from my external hard drive on my daughter's mac. Note this project was saved in imovie 8 and she has imovie 9, although I cannot see this being an issue.
Can anyone else suggest why imovie only opens my events, but doesn't open the project in the project library. I have tried copying the .rcproject from the external hard drive to the desktop along with the events, but to no avail. Any further suggestions, I have a pending deadline.
    Thanks.

You should be able to get this to work.
    I would suggest the following:
    1) Move the RCPROJECT file from the desktop to the Movies/iMovie Projects folder.
    2) Use the Events on the external drive. Your project will be pointing to the external drive. It will not know how to find anything on the internal drive.
    Then restart iMovie.
This should work, as iMovie is forward compatible. However, once you open the project in iMovie 09, you will no longer be able to open it in iMovie 08. (Of course, you could make a copy of it in its current state.)
I am less sure about your events. Your events will be converted to iMovie 09 format. I don't think you will be able to still open them in iMovie 08. You might if you delete all the cache and thumbnail folders and let iMovie 08 regenerate these, but I am not sure. Your best bet is to upgrade to iMovie 09 or better yet, iMovie 11 on your home computer.

  • I wiped the hard drive and lost lightroom...please help before wife kills me...

Hi folks!  First post here so go easy on the newb...
Our computer got slammed with a virus a few days back and we had to wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything.  So we lost lightroom.  The original version we had was downloaded to begin with... so the only serial number we had was wiped with the rest of the hd. (bonehead, i know)  We do have an upgrade serial number from when we upgraded our lightroom a while back, but it is useless without the "original SN#" which we don't have.
Is there anything we can do?
    Thanks!
    Daryl & Haley

Time to get paranoid.  For the future, backup everything, especially serial numbers and the like.  I have a program in which I store all passwords, logins, serial numbers, etc that I need. Of course it is encrypted and it takes a password to get into it, but that is only ONE password. It is a desktop/mobile application, so it gets synced with my phone.  (We travel a lot, so I need this information when we travel).   All downloaded products and associated stuff  live on an external drive and are backed up to another external drive.  There is another copy made occasionally that lives offsite.  I put a text file in the "products" directory for each program in which I ALSO have the serial number and any additional information about installation -- like what you need to install an upgrade, etc.  I have learned to be paranoid through experiences similar to yours...
I do admit though that the companies are getting much better about forgotten serial numbers than they used to be, so it looks like you are saved this time.
I hope you have a copy of the database and the images?  The images are truly irreplaceable, and the database is valuable.

  • I have external hard drive and I cant make changes in it, such as deleting photos or adding photos to external hard drive from macbook pro. could anyone please help me. I don;t know what to do...

I have macbook pro. I can not make changes in external hard drive such as deleting photos also I can not add photos to external hard drive. could you please help me?

    That's the way.
The drive is probably formatted NTFS which is Windows proprietary file system. Mac OS can read it, but not write to it.
You can do as suggested by TheDave if you have sufficient HD space for temporary storage. Depending on whether you need to continue using the drive with Windows machines there are a few options.
Best for Mac only use is to re-partition and format as GUID partition map and Mac OS Extended (journaled)
For dual use, Leave the partition as MBR and format as FAT32 (MS-DOS in Disk Utility). This has a file size limit of a little over 4GB, but can be read and written to by both Mac and Windows.
There is also exFAT (aka FAT64) if both OSs support it - no file limit there that you'll ever reach.
Alternatively there are software solutions which will allow the Mac to read and write to NTFS drives. I'm told they're not as good as the other solutions, but may be an option if you haven't space to store the contents while re-formatting.
