Newbie question about Premiere Elements Organizer

This is a pre-newbie – let’s say “virgin” question. If there is an answer already posted elsewhere, please send me a link.
I’m about to install Premiere Elements 9 to do some clip editing and animation from still images.  This would be my first attempt to edit clip or do some animation from still images, besides using Windows Media Maker with my HS students. However, I have been a pretty serious photographer for 20+ years with 1,000’s of images which I now work on in PS CS5 Extended and Lightroom 3. I use Adobe Bridge and LR library to catalogue and organize my images. I’d like to continue to use AB / LR Library to organize my new clips and projects. From reading Bill’s posts, it seems I can use Adobe Bridge, copy my original file, resize in Photoshop, and save in a new folder to use for a Premiere project. This would seem to be most intuitive way for me to work. I already have keywords, metadata, actions in PS… etc. But I think Bill is using Premiere Pro, while I’ll be installing Premiere Elements, which comes bundled with Elements Organizer. Do I need to install or use Elements Organizer? What are the advantages/disadvantages or EO?  I guess I’m a little worried about installing the programs and having EO automatically acquire images using presets/defaults that I don’t want to use as well as issues with subfolders, etc. I'm running Windows 7.
Thanks
FYI- this is a great animation project

EO doesn't do much with the files themselves, just maintains links to the sources.
For folders you are best to use the folder view in EO to move them as it doesn't keep track of folder locations when changed in Windows Explorer. From the File options in Bridge I think that is pretty much the same.

I would like to get as much input as possible on the advantages/disadvantages of using EO vs say Adobe Bride from others who use Elements Organizer.
Any insights would be appreciated.
Can anyone who has used both EO and AB comment on how EO handles missing (hidden) files, syncing issues, computer hanging up or crashing....etc?
I've only messed around a little with Bridge. But to me it seems lightening fast by comparison to EO. The features Albums and Tags in EO seem much the same as Collections and Keywords in Bridge.
EO has Face Recognition abilities - getting more sophisticated in each version. I've not seen this feature in Bridge.
By default EO allows you to open a file in any of:
Photoshop
Photoshop Elements
Premiere Elements
A single used-defined application (I have mine set to ColorPilot).
Bridge only seems to link to Photoshop.
Missing files can be located manually or by allowing EO to search for them.

  • Basic questions about Premiere Elements 8

I'm new to this forum and although I use Photoshop Elements extensively, I am just trialling Premiere Elements 8. I have a number of questions from my (very limited) testing so far:
    1. Most of the videos that I download from my Sony DCR-DVD110 DVDs behave fine, but one of them only has half an audio track. The full audio was there on the DVD, but in the project it appears that the second half of the audio has been moved to overlay the first half, instead of following on. The video format is VOB. Has anyone else had this problem, or could suggest how it can be remedied?
    2. I understand from the help that I can split incoming video from a DV camcorder using the timecode on the tape. However, I do not seem to get the same option when downloading from DVD as above. The scene-splitter in the project list only allows content detection (which is unreliable), or regular divisions. Does anyone know if there a timecode on the VOB files, and is there a way of using this to split video into clips that is more reliable than scene detection?
    3. I do not understand the red/green line that appears under the Timeline ruler, just above the video. In one project, I have cleared clips out of the timeline and copied new ones in. The green or red line no longer changes at clip boundaries. Where it is green, the clip audio plays back, but not the video. Where it is red, both play. I do not seem to be able to find out what this means, let alone how to change it, and do not know how I set it in the first place. Does anyone know what this coloured line means, and how to change it so that all of the clips play both audio and video?
    4. When I start the program from the Welcome Screen, it gives me the option of opening an old project. Even though I select the project that I wish to open, this does not happen. Premiere Elements 8 starts, but the project does not load. Is this just a limitation of the trial version, or a common problem? Can I skip the Welcome screen and go straight into Premiere Elements 8?
I'm looking to buy Premiere Elements 8 along with an upgrade to Photoshop Elements 8, for the compatibility and common file organiser, but so far the above problems are putting me off a purchase. The programme also does not seem to be as intuitive as Studio 7, which was the last video editing software that I used (some years ago, taking data from a DV camcorder).
Your help and any recommendations that you may be able to add would be most welcome.

Virtually all of your problems are related to your trying to edit video from a DVD camcorder. Although the program is supposed to be able to work with these video files, they can be very problematic if your computer's operating system is not fully updated, you lack the current version of Quicktime and you do not have the proper codecs installed.
The red lines you're seeing above your video on the timeline are indications of this. These are indications that your video needs to be rendered by the program in order for the program to work with it.
If you'd like to try to work with DVD cam video despite these liabilities, there are things you can do to improve performance somewhat. The FAQs to the right of this forum explain how and why.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317?tstart=0
But I recommend you convert your VOB files to DV-AVIs before you bring them into Premiere Elements. This will likely remedy nearly all of your problems (assuming your computer's hardware and software are up to the necessary specs and are fully updated).

  • Question about Premiere Elements

I am considering purchasing Premiere Elements but I need to know if one can use it to add effects to an animated gif file.
For example, in Photoshop Elements one can add certain effects to a gif image, such as giving it certain textures or filters.
Can one do the same kind of thing in Premiere Elements and if so can it be done to an animated gif file?
    Thanks for your help.

Premiere Elements does not work with animated GIFs as source video.
Photoshop Pro would be a much better choice.

  • Background Task on Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Premiere Elements Organizer "hangs"

I recently upgraded my software from Elements 10 to Elements 12 and had a bit of trouble.  Apparently both 10 and 12 have a way of launching an executable in the background which tends to get "stuck" on my system.  I believe the problem may be related to the network configuration and software mix I live with, but I need to confirm my suspecions and find a way to control the problem.  Here is what I know... I have always experienced a lot of problems using Elements with my NAS device which is a 1TB usb 2.0 connected disk system attached to my Linksys  E3000 Router.  When I got the router, the BIOS software did not correctly support NTFS file systems, but subsequent updates eventually made this possible if you formatted the removable drive on a system in NTFS, you could then hang it on the router and "see" the contents, serve them via Windows Media Player, or iTunes, etc., etc. from a computer atteched to the network, or via wirless directly off the router.  I archived all my photos out on this file system and have successfully indexed it for use with Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Premiere Elements Organizer, but...  When I went to install Elements 12 software I tried to install it without first removing Elements 10, and on a system which had run Elements 10 since the last full reoboot.  During the install of 12 under "shared services install" the installation process "Hung" on a background task with a name like "AdobeElementsAnalyzer.exe" which only shows up in Windows 7 task manager as a running process, not as a full program, but because the file was locked by the system, the install hung.  I eventually figured out that I needed to start the install of Elements 12 software immediately after having rebooted so that this program was not present in the background, and succeeded in completing an install of Elements 12 on my Windows 7 X64 system.  This system required a "special" software download for Premiere Elements, but not for Photoshop Elements which is only apparently avaliable under 32bit emulation mode.  I finally got the "shared components" portion of the X64 Premiere Elements to complete an install, and then set about verifying the onversion/upgrade of the indexes to my photos and video stored out on the NAS.  The same rogue task which prevented me from doing the install showed up agian, taking all the system resources away from my dual processor Intel chip and refusing to let go.   I was forced to terminate it from the task manager.  I strongly suspect that my "issues" are in part due to the extrordinary network latency imposed by the drive connection I'm using to index my photos and videos, and I'm looking for a better approach to using the editors against my master catalog of files, as well as figruing out just what I need to do to insure that all the files I have stored on the drive are accessible by the organizer when I need to pull a copy to work on.
A complication is that I have two "legacy" Windows XP systems on my network, a reasonably fast Windows Vista Business desktop, and the Windows 7 X64 processor system which is the most powerful system I have.  The Windows file security enhancements to NTFS changed from XP, to Vista, to Windows 7, so files which get saved to the NAS disk inherit a variety of different levels of security under windows.  I have occasionally gone to one of my old XP boxes and "wiped" the security settings by resetting everything via Windows XP.  Because the NAS is so slow, this process can take several hours and must not be interrupted by attempts to do anything affecting the NAS by any of my other networked computers.  To avoid problems with my photo archive, it makes sense to me to do all my editing on copies which have been extracted from the NAS archive and stored on the C: drive (boot drive) of my Win X64 system.
What I seriously need to know is this:  When/If I define a "watched" portion of my file system, rather than taking the time to manually import every little change to my photo archives, can I expect the Photoshop Elements Organizer to work properly as long as everything stored on the NAS is stored via the same system which runs Elements with the same active "user" in control so that all the windows 7 file security settings putting stuff on the mapped NAS drive remain properly secured under Win 7 X64?  Frankly I don't care if the files appear "read only" to every other system and identity on my network, but I do need to be able to "see" them.  I have been able to view slide shows and movies stored on the NAS via both my networked iPad, my Apple TV, and using Samsung's funky android and Windows compatible software.  Frankly, I doubt that Microsoft or Apple has full understanding and control of the environment where there is no host "server" other than the eprom based stuff my Linksys E3000 loads to emulate early Windows Media Management architecture, but I mange to get it to work as long as I don't try anything sophisticated with the file permissions.   As a fall back, can I expect individual "imported" bits out on the NAS to remain stable if indexed and used only by the Elements Organizer running on my Win 7 X64 system?
I am seriously considering converting an old WinXP desktop into a UNIX box which could be configured as a "Server" for everything stored on the NAS and be done with my problems in return for the power required to run the server all the time so stuff is there when I need it.  Any recommendations?

Adobe hasn't said whether it officially supports PSE 7 on Windows 7.  But reports are starting to trickle in that PSE 7 works fine on Windows 7 for most people, though a couple people have reported crashes. My PSE 7 seems to work fine, though I primarily use PSE 8 now.  This is all very preliminary, and we'll learn more as more people post here.

  • Hot to force Premiere Elements Organizer to save my notes?

    Hello,
Is there a way to force Premiere Elements Organizer (PEO) to save the notes I have typed in?
I have been reviewing .AVI files all day.  I have summarize each file and written the summary in the notes field of the Premiere Elements Organizer (PEO) for each file.  I just went back to look at the notes I have made.  I found that many of them are totally blank now as though my work was never saved.  Much or all of my work is lost.
How can I force PEO to save the changes I have made so I do not lose them all again?
Am I doing something wrong that is preventing my work from being saved?
It would be good if PEO had an "auto-save" feature that would save the state of things every so many minutes to prevent lost work.

I am not sure how much of a help the following will be, but, as for general information, did you know that

  • Sorting Some Myths & Facts About Premiere Elements 9

    Steve Grisetti,
Part 1 Photoshop Elements Premiere Elements Slide Show Integration
If you recall, we went down the following Photoshop Elements Premiere Elements integration road when Premiere Elements 8.0 was released. And, I fear we need to go down that road again.
In spite of the fact (and for whatever reason Adobe persists in saying what it does in its Read Me), you do not have to have Photoshop Elements 9 installed with Premiere Elements 9 in order to use the Photoshop Elements Slide Show Editor Output Option "Edit With Premiere Elements", to get a seamless transfer from Photoshop Elements to Premiere Elements, and to have the Premiere Elements Break Apart command available.
The doable combos for this are:
    Photoshop Elements 6.0/Premiere Elements 9.0
    Photoshop Elements 7.0/Premiere Elements 9.0
    Photoshop Elements 8.0/Premiere Elements 9.0
    Photoshop Elements 9.0/Premiere Elements 9.0
as was the case (shown over and over by myself and large number of others)
    Photoshop Elements 6.0/Premiere Elements 8.0
    Photoshop Elements 7.0/Premiere Elements 8.0
    Photoshop Elements 8.0/Premiere Elements 8.0
Part 2. Premiere Elements 9.0 New Feature: Automatic Change of Project Preset
At another web site you are featuring a video on this subject where you drag a HD 1080i30 video into a DV Standard project and get a Mismatched Project Setting dialog for changing the project preset from DV Standard to HD1080i30. You do point out that this change is possible ONLY if it is done with the first such clip dragged to the Timeline. However, the impression is a generalization for MORE. I have found that the reverse situation DOES NOT WORK (no dialog) if you bring a DV AVI into a project set up for HD 1080i30. I have not gone through all the possible scenarios, but suspect that the feature has limited application. I make this comment now to fend off questions from users who ask why does this NOT work for me when they are repeating your demo to the last detail (they think) but using a different combo of project preset and file format.
I have not had time to organize a first look thread here, but I thought that these two points justified themselves as forerunners of what is to come.

    Steve Grisetti
I would respectfully ask if you did any testing of the Automatic Change of Project Preset feature of Premiere Elements 9 beyond what you demo’d in your mini video tutorial on the matter?
Earlier in this thread I wrote the following in which I mentioned doubts about a possible limited application for this new “Automatic Change of Project Preset” feature for Premiere Elements 9. Now I am getting to wonder if there are major glitches in the reliability of this feature and if users should be depending on its recommendation blindly.
    First what I wrote initially……
“Part 2. Premiere Elements 9.0 New Feature: Automatic Change of Project Preset

    Second, Latest Developments
A user at another forum that I frequent posted that, after allowing the Mismatched Project Setting dialog to change the project preset for him, he could not get the Timeline video reflected in the Edit Mode Monitor although he could get the file audio.
    The details were these:
Video was from a Canon SX10 IS recorded as 640 x 480 with a video codec described by gspot as Name: AVC1 Codec: H.264. The video had a .mov file extension. (The results to follow were independent of whether I changed the file extension from .mov to .avi or .mpg.) Although it was not spelled out, I believe this to be an AVCHD Lite file.
When the project preset (new project dialog) was set at NTSC DV Standard (720 x 480) and the file imported into Premiere Elements 9, the Mismatched Project Setting dialog appeared to which the user clicked YES. That YES set the project preset to NTSC/Flip/Flip Mino and Ultra 30p which is shown as 640 x 480 with Editing Mode = “Sony XDCAM EX 720p”.
When the video was dragged to the Timeline, there was no video reflected in the Edit Mode Monitor, however the audio could be heard as the Timeline content playback progressed from beginning to end. Not ever was there a red line over this Timeline content. This suggested to me that the program was recognizing this video as its new native format AVCHD. If you made a minor edit to the video to force a red line over its content, rendering the Timeline in the Edit Mode DID permit the video to display in the Edit Mode Monitor.
Until more information is available on this new feature, in this specific case, my recommendation to this user was to use the NTSC DV Standard project preset AND say NO to the Premiere Elements 9 Mismatched Project Setting dialog.  And, when the video (640 x 480) was on the Timeline, it was suggested that the user use Properties Palette/Motion Panel/Scale properties to get rid of any tiny black borders to the left and right in the Edit Mode Template.
However, the finally puzzlement to this case is that if the user continues in the program's recommended Flip project preset (without a video display in the Edit Mode Monitor) to Share, the export displays both video and audio just fine.
In case I did not mention it, going direct from the new project dialog/ NTSC Flip Flip Mino and Ultra 30p yielded the same results…no video but audio in the Edit Mode Monitor of the video on the Timeline. My evaluation of the issue was done using a Canon SX10 IS sample video downloaded from the Internet.

  • How should I set up Premiere elements organizer?

I'm using PS CS5 and Lightroom 3. I'm about to install Premiere Elements 9 to do some editing and animation. Since I can view my images and clips in LR library and also Adobe Bridge, what are the advantages or disadvantages of PE organizer? How should I set up the defaults and use PE Organizer?  I'm a little concerned about using the same file in different programs. For example, say i have an image that's already been processed for printing and has a specific color profile/ color space that I want to use now as a starting point for an animation in PE. I just don't want to end up writing over previous data but I'm  also concerned about having 15 verisions of the same file. Any suggestions for peace of mind? I'm running windows 7.

I would recommend posting your inquiry to the Premiere Elements forum.

Elements Organizer 11 on Windows 7 (assumed 64 bit).
When did you post this question before today. If all you posted today is all you sent in this thread, then be advised that this is not Adobe. Rather user to user. The replies are not automatic and depend
on a reply from a user based on the use's personal schedule.
I am not sure if the following will target the "msvvcr90.dll" but consider the following for the "crash" aspects
    1. Delete the Elements Organizer 11 settings file named psa.prf found
    Local Disk C
    Users
    Owner
    AppData
    Roaming
    Adobe
    Elements Organizer
    13.0
    Organizer
and in the Organizer Folder is the psa.prf file that you delete or disable by renaming it from psa.prf to psa.prfOLD.
    2. If the Elements Organizer 11 will stay open long enough, create a new catalog.
See Elements Organizer 11 File Menu/Manage Catalog/Catalog Manager.
    3. Some times certain formats can bring the Elements Organizer down. What kind of files have you been
importing into the Elements Organizer and are the crashes associated with certain source files?

  • Video Rendering Question using Premiere Elements 11 and/or Adobe Premiere

The video Rendering /encoding process can take hours even on an I5 processor.
It seems like this has to be done, redone and done again during the editing process.
If I purchase a camera which supports AVCHD 2.0 - does that mean that the encoding process altogether goes away, so that content is able to be transfered natively to the end media and so that I reduce my burn time to a BluRay Disc, using for example, Adobe Premiere Elements 11 or Full Fledged Adobe Premiere, or Sony's Vegas ?
    Newbie to Video Editing.

AVCHD 2.0 only means that the camera can also record 1080p/60, which was previously not part of the AVCHD specification and still is not part of the Blu-ray spec.  It's most useful for smooth slow motion effects.
Anything you add to Premiere Pro will need to be transcoded for Blu-ray, no way around that.

  • Premiere Elements organizer with Premiere CS5

I'm looking for an easy way to capture AVCHD from my camera and organize the clips before importing them into Premiere CS5.  What are the best options to do this?  I was considering loading Premiere Elements on my PC and using the Organizer to do this.  Is there a better way?

I would think that Bridge can do what you need, without some of the extra baggage of the PrE Organizer. However, if there is something that is very important to you, let us know, as someone might have other ideas.

  • I have a question about photoshop elements 11

can i create templates on elements 11 of customize templates of skins on games with elements 11

I believe that Amazon (the actual Amazon, and not semi-affiliated merchents) WAS a certified Adobe reseller. However, with the CC (Creative Cloud), I am not sure about that any longer - others can verify their certification.
As CS 5 is discontinued software, I would NOT expect Adobe to be selling that version - anywhere.
Research ANY reseller, and very, very carefully.
Also, do gain the rights to manipulate and post ALL © material - that is not only smart, but also honest and ethical.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - you might also want to explore two other, current Adobe programs: Photoshop Elements 11, and Premiere Elements 11. They are often sold in bundles, for about the MSRP on one. Together, they will handle most Still Image editing needs, and also Video creation and editing. They are both very inexpensive, but powerful programs.

  • Newbie question: will Premiere do....?

Hi, apologies if this seems a ridiculous question. I am an experienced Photoshop/Illustrator user but have never had any experience with Adobe's video packages. I work in an scientific research laboratory and more and more often now we are getting data presented in short video format. These come from various sources so are in all sorts of formats, and we need to be able to present them in Powerpoint presentations (and it would be nice to be able to do a bit of editing). At the moment we have lots of problems with compatibility. Would Premiere Pro or any of Adobe's other products help with this? I am currently trying to decide which edition of CS4 to purchase - just Design Premium or Master Collection - and would like to know if I would find these extra packages useful.

    Jo-Maree Courtney,
You might want to look at the video handling capabilities in Photoshop Extended. Introduced in CS3 version, it might do all that you need to do, with regards to video. The CS4 version has been greatly expanded, if my info is correct, and will be available very shortly.
As Jeff states, Premiere Elements might also do the trick. It is more of a "big button" product, than is Pro. It handles more diverse media, than does Pro, though is still built around a DV-AVI workflow. That would be the best type of Asset to Import into either program. Elements can do a lot, but its target market is the video hobbiest, doing family videos. Still, behind those big buttons, there is a lot of power, but you have to search a bit to unlock it. Its strength is that one can take raw DV-AVI footage, press a couple of buttons and get a stylized product out the other end. It has a demo version and there is also a new book by Steve Grisetti (www.muvipix.com), that explains Priemere Elements 7 pretty well. He has also done a series of articles on PE7 that appear on the above site. You might want to read those, to see if you think this product will work for your needs.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Newbie Question about FM 8 and Acrobat Pro 9

    Hello:
I have some dcouments that I've written in FM v8.0p277. I print them to PDF so that I can have a copy to include on a CD and I also print some hard copies.
My newbie question is whether there is a way to create a  PDF for hard copy where I mainitain the colors in photos and figures but that the text that is hyperlinked doesn't appear as blue. I want to keep the links live within the soft copy. Is there something I can change within Frame or with Acrobat?
    TIA,
    Kimberly

    Kimberly,
How comes the text is blue in the first place? I guess the cross-reference formats use some character format which makes them blue? There are many options:
Temporarily change the color definition for the color used in the cross-reference format to black.
Temporarily change the character format to not use that color.
Temporarily change the cross-reference definition to not used that character format.
Whichever method you choose, I would create a separate document with the changed format setting and import those format into your book, create the PDF and then import the same format from the official template.

  • Newbie question about loading servlets on tomcat

I have what is probably a very basic question about loading simple servlets on to tomcat to test its installation. I have followed instructions from numerous tutorials to the letter but still I can't get it to work.
I have installed tomcat on win2k in c:\tomcat. I set up the jdk, environment vars (JAVA_HOME, CATALINA_HOME, TOMCAT_HOME) which all point at the correct dirs. I can compile a servlet without errors. I can also place a test jsp and html file into the root directory and they both work fine.
However, now I am trying a test servlet and no matter what I do it gives me a 404. I have a servlet class file called "HelloServlet.class" which I placed into the %install_dir%\webapps\ROOT\WEB-INF\classes directory. I try to reference it using this url:
    http://localhost/servlet/HelloServlet
Tomcat is configured to use port 80 and has been restarted after adding the servlet class file. Does anyone have a clue why this is not working for me?
    Many thanks
    Marc

You have to add in the web.xml file that it is in the WEB-INF dir, the information about your servlet. An example:
    <web-app>
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>HelloServlet</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>HelloServlet</servlet-class>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>HelloServlet</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/HelloServlet</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    </web-app>

  • Question on Premiere Elements 8 Custom Presets

I have Premiere Elements 8. When starting a new project and going through the presets, none match what my camera is recording. Is there a way to create a custom preset? I tried starting a new project and going to "edit>preferences>general" but it won't let me change any of the fields. I did find an old thread where someone had something you could download to add more presets, but it was a bad link.
The video I am wanting to edit is 1280x720, 59.4 fps, mpeg. But the camera(gopro HD) also has other resoloution/framerate options. I also have a Nikon D3s slr, not sure if there is a preset for that as I haven't gotten that far yet. It will open and let me edit in the other presets but I want it right.
Hopefully someone can help me out!

I understand how you feel. PrE is a great program, however with the number of formats/CODEC's and their often tweaked specs., I feel that the lack of a custom Preset is a drawback, and have filed a Feature Request with every version I have used. As I also have PrPro, this is less an issue for me, but feel that it could be so useful to other users. So far - nothing. I realize that Adobe has a balancing act with PrE and PrPro, in that one should expect something extra for an additional US $600 +/-, but I would think that extracting and re-working the existing code from PrPro here, would not be THAT big a deal. Still, I am not a coder, so perhaps it would be much more difficult, than I imagine. Maybe PrE 10? Unless you do have a screaming deal on PrPro CS 5.5, I think that I wouuld hold off until ~ Sept., as that is traditionaly when PrE's newest version is introduced - just in time to stock the shelves in time for Holiday sales. If more flexibility in Project settings are not included in PrE 10, then PrPro would be a viable option. As the general mechanics of the two programs is very similar, all one has to do is learn where things are located in PrPro, and get used to doing more things manually (with added control). Personally, I like working that way better, than having less control and simple buttons to push, but that is just me. Many decry having to do things with less automation, or having to use a separate bundled program, Encore, for all DVD/BD authoring, where PrE has that capability built in. All that said, I probably recommend PrE 10x more often, than I do PrPro.
Also, and especially with consumer material, PrE usually gets those in Presets, before they show up in PrPro. AVCHD and Import of VOB's are but two such examples. Still, with the Desktop/Custom Preset in PrPro, having the Presets is less of a big deal, but pure, true native support for a format/CODEC certainly is.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - though too late for PrE 10, do file the Feature Request. The more requests, the more likely that the feature will make its way into PrE.
