NI Stepper Motor not putting out enough torque

So I have a motion control system with a P70360, UMI 7772, PXI 7332, and a NEMA 23 stepper motor with 380 oz-in. The purpose of the set up is to rotate horizontally a testing fixture and hold it in position (slowly). Previously the set up was using a motor with 180 oz-in but it was decided that it wasn't enough torque seeing as it wasn't able to fully rotate the fixture, also using a step resolution of 18000, current reduction is disabled, multistepping is enabled, dynamic smoothing is minimal, and load-inertia ratio is set to 0-1.
When the 380oz-in motor was plugged in it was still unable to rotate the platform completely but it wasn't even able to rotate it as far as the 180 oz-in which leads me to believe it was outputting less torque than it should have been. The only reasoning I could think of for this was that there was an issue with the settings somehow where it was limiting the power being fed into the motor for whatever reason. So I walked through the manual (http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/372324d.pdf) and it still wasn't giving enough torque.
I also read that decreasing the step size would increase the torque so I reduced it to 200 and it started making a grinding noise, which made everyone in the lab stare at me and start laughing... I immediately hit the kill motor button (I've been controlling it using NI MAX).
So far I can't seem to find anything that mentions the motor making a grinding noise or not pulling enough torque while using the P70360 so here I am asking the community. Why is the motor making the grinding noise (which also seems to become less the higher the step resolution is) and why isn't the motor putting out more torque?
Also of note, I'm an electrical engineer, meaning my understanding of mechanical terms is limited to the basics.
Thanks for any help you can give.

I can't get too specific about the dimensions but it's a rectangular platform about 8 inches wide and 25 inches long (axis of rotation goes through the long way). There are also the UUT seating on one side which is what's causing the imbalance but by placing my lab notebook on the other side it balances out. I would estimate my book to weigh around 2 pounds.
The exact weight I'm not sure, the platform is attached to two stands through some type of bearings and the motor is turning a part of the shaft that is sticking out slightly.
On another note though, I decided to attach a oscilloscope to the motor to verify the signals were correct. I had made all the connections, double checked them to make sure all my connections were correct and weren't shorting then turned on the power. As soon as I did there was a white flash from the driver, I turned off the power, and I could smell something was burning. I took the lid off but couldn't see any immediate burn marks anywhere nor was there any visible smoke, just the odor. I decided not to try it again and my principal engineer has been trying to convince me to use another companies motion system. So sadly this may be the last well funded venture into NI motion control I take.
I'm still going to try to get in touch with a rep and see what I can do about it including taking into consideration the possibility of a gearbox but it's going to have to be on my spare time :'(

  • Why do constant CC updates matter? Adobe is not putting out many essential updates anymore.

Reading these posts on CC I have continually come across people who claim that to be a serious professional in a creative field you need to have your Adobe software up to date. How does one compete if they are using old Adobe software? As someone who has been working in the field for a long time I don’t see how this could be any further from the truth. Yes, I do believe that you need software that is relatively up to date but I don’t believe you need the new software that is coming from Adobe. The software that I really need has been coming from third party plug-ins. This is probably the main reason I have a problem with the rental software; it keeps pushing new updates on you even when they are the wrong updates. Below are many examples at how over the past several years the 3rd party has constantly delivered and Adobe has faltered.
When I first tried out InDesign’s automatic text flow feature I couldn’t get it to work even after asking around on several different online forums. I was told about some plug-ins that could do auto text flow and after I tried it everything worked.
I later found that when I would add or delete a page that had facing pages my layout would get completely messed up. How could I fix this problem? By upgrading to a new version of ID? Nope, new versions of ID didn’t fix that. I fixed the problem by buying a plug-in.
I once had a client who sent me a Word file that was loaded with grammar errors. In a perfect world the content editor should be the one mostly in charge of fixing grammar but as we all know we don’t live in a perfect world. Unfortunately ID does not provide grammar checking at all. This feature has been available in Word since like, what, 1988(?) but it won’t work on the absolutely latest version of ID. It will work with a plug-in.
The history panel is a feature that has been available since about PS 5. It has provided some of the most basic functionality of a graphics program; the ability to go back a few steps. Since this is such a basic feature it’s made it’s way to other apps like Fireworks and Lightroom. It’s even available in consumer apps like PS Elements. So how can you run this basic feature in a professional program like ID FIFTEEN YEARS after it was released in PS 5? Get a plug-in.
Hey look! The new features page says that CC finally comes with built in barcode support! Hallelujah!! Praise the Lord! Now there is a feature that I can use! True, I needed the feature three years ago when I was making ID badges and, yes, I already spent hundreds of dollars buying a plug-in that can more then adequately do that functionality already, but hey better late then never right? Good things surely do come to those who wait!
Huh? What is that I am now reading? The barcode software only supports the pattern type of barcodes and not the standard line type found on just about every kind of merchandise know to mankind? My client needed the standard kind of barcode. When is that going to be released? Do I have to wait another three years?
The fact of the matter is that Adobe has come out with THREE major updates since I last upgraded and I can still barely find enough important features that would make the update worthwhile. New features this time around include things like font management (even though every serious designer already has font management software) and a different color interface.
This shortage of new worthwhile features is certainly not due to there being enough features that need improvement. For an example doing a very simple data merge with a basic layout is still immensely complicated. I would be overjoyed if they made that process as simple and powerful as it should be. Instead what we will get is more pointless updates that will only break the important plug-ins that I rely on to get my work done on tight deadlines. You know how web browsers with bi-monthly updates (Firefox, Chrome) keep breaking your browsers plug-ins except this time instead of breaking goofy trivial plug-ins that let you do things like check the weather they will break important ones that you need to rely on to get work done.
The plug-ins developers will have to dedicate an enormous amount of time checking to see if their software works with every little ID update that comes out. This means they will have less time to working on features even though they are the ones making the best advancements.

Yes, I realize that Firefox is free, but that doesn't really negate the validity of anyone's frustrations. I just wish they would warn people better about the problems that the updates can cause before asking people to update. Most people rely very heavily on their computers for work, etc. and not everyone has the time or ability to easily undo the problems that the updates cause. Again, if it was just a one-time thing that I've had to deal with, I wouldn't mind as much.

  • IPod not putting out sound on right headphone

As of yesterday, my iPod is not producing any sound through the right headphone. I've tried my headphones on other devices and they work, and also tried other headphones on my ipod and the right headphone still has no sound.
It seems like a problem with the connection because when I jiggle the headphone jack, I get brief bursts of soun (it seems like if I physically hold the headphone jack towards the back of the ipod, it helps).
Anyone else encounter this or have a suggestion?

  • Airport connected to internet but not putting out wireless

    Hey there,
Have a G5 connected directly to an airport extreme that is connected to the internet just fine. Not the new generation airport extreme.
My POWERBOOK G4 is not showing a wireless signal at all and usually does. I checked the powerbooks system preferences, network, airport status and it says, "Airport is connected to the network. Airport has a self assigned IP address and may not able to connect to the internet." The airport is connected to the airport because my G5 is directly connected through it.
This set up has worked before but I'm not sure when it stopped because I haven't been using my powerbook for some time.
Both computers are running OS 10.3.9 Both can connect to the internet directly through the airport. All the setting are set in the airport set up.
Anyone have any idea how to get this wireless set up back up and running ?
    thanks,
    tnixer

Okay, looking at the Airport Admin Utility.
INternet> configured manually (won't work automatic)
Network> Distribute IP address is checked.
And Share a single address is checked. Use 10.0.1.1 adressing is selected
IF I uncheck "Distribute IP address" then Airport can't connect to the internet.
I can't get Share A Range of IP address to even take the number I type in.
The thing of all this is it used to work.
One thing that happened is I tried a different internet provider, didn't like, changed back to my usual service. Maybe that is when this started because like I said I haven't tried using my powerbook for a while so I'm not sure.
In any case it seems like its just a matter of settings since this set up has worked for years.
Maybe sharing my settings with give some clues ?
    thanks,

  • A periodic fast signal to put out randomly to two different lines

thank you so patient to answer me so fragmentary question.
What I want is a two random fast digital output. However, two of outputs is related. superpose them will produce a periodic fast singal. In other words, when the line 1 put out "1",the line 2 put out "0".But when to put out "1" or "0" is random.
I have studied 6602 manual and the examples in Help menu. But I can not find way to do that.In DIO context, the digital I/O is static(In my view,it can not put out fast signal. What is the max frequency o f it?);and in counter context, pulse generation only put out a periodic signal. So I don't know how to do it.

I am a little confused with your question. On the NI-6602, you are correct in stating the digital lines are static (writing/reading to digital lines is controlled by software). Therefore, the speed of writing/reading to/from the digital lines will by system dependent.
It seems to me as if you want two pulse trains to start at the same time but be inverted. You could program the counters to share a start trigger and have one counter start at a digital low and the other counter to start at a digital high. This would produce two pulse trains that would be synchronized and inverted. I hope this helps.

You do a restore as new to wipe the iPhone then at the end of restore you will be asked to restore from backup. Choose your iPhone backup.
Note you cannot restore an IOS newer than the IOS on iPhone, you need to update iPhone first.

  • MAX does not run stepper motor

I am an abosolute novice at NI Motion and cannot get MAX to move a stepper motor. I'd be very grateful for any help.
The system consists of a PXI-7340 Motion Controller card installed in a PXIe-1065 chassis. The PXI-7340 is connected by means of a SHC-68-C68-S cable via the Motion I/O port to the Motion I/O port of an UMI-7774 board. The UMI-7774 board is supplied with a 24Vdc power supply as well as an isolated 15Vdc power supply to its power terminals. Two stepper motors are to be controlled using this UMI, which has 4-axes capability. The Axis 1 and Axis 2 sections on the UMI are connected to a Danaher Motion P70530 Stepper Drive each by means of a D-Sub to D-Sub cable via the Control port on the UMI and the J4 Command port on the P70530 Drives. The P70530 drives are supplied with 65Vdc power from a bench top DC power supply capable of 70V, 15A. Each P70530 drive is connected to a Pacific Scientific Powerpac stepper motor (N33HRHJ, 65V, 5A).  (Thus, two P70530 drives and two stepper motors are connected tothe UMI.)
I am trying to get MAX to turn the motor. In the listing in MAX, under NI Motion Devices/PXI-7340/Default 7340 Settings/Axes 1/Axes Configuration, all limits were disabled, settings saved and initialized.
However, in the 1-D Interactive window, when the Target Position is set to a value, e.g. 2000 steps, and the Start button is pressed, the motor does not move.
But, the LED on the P70530 blinks until the Kill button on MAX is pressed.
Can anyone tell me why the motor does not move?
Where does one go to learn more on MAX? Why are all the manuals at NI made for experts who already know what they are doing and not for beginners? The Help is no help at all really.
    Regards,
    PKP

Thank you, Jonas, for your reply.
I called in to NI and talked with "Vivek" and he helped me set the MAX settings and the DIP switches on the P70530 motor drive (amplifier) to get the motor to run. He pointed me to the "Getting Started P7000 Series Stepper Drives" 28 page manual, which for some reason was not included in the CDROM that came with the P70530 drive or with the pre-installed manuals in the PXI chassis. (You would think to include all the relevant manuals on the CDROM, but nope.) The manual showed how to "Change Settings" for the PXI-7340 inside MAX and set it to the 7340 Settings for P7000 Drives.
Under Axis 1/Axis Configuration/ Stepper Settings tab, set the Stepper steps per revolution to 5000.
Under Axis 1/Motion I/O Settings, all the filters, switches and the "Inhibit Output Settings" has to be disabled.
    Now the motor runs. Yay!
But there is one teeny-weeny thing.
Under  Interactive/1-D Interactive, when the velocity is set to 100 rpm or more, or the Acceleration is set to over 20 rps/s, the motor whines and does not rotate.
When V=0 to 95 rpm, Acc=10 rps/s, the motor runs for a given Target position value (such as 200, 2000, 20000, etc.)
Here is another weird observation. When the Velocity is set to say 60 rpm, the actual motor speed measured with a tachometer and a stroboscope is found to be  about 1440 rpm, i.e., 60 x 24 rpm. (I measured the rpm using the two different devices and both tend to agree.)
Is the "rpm" unit a typo? Should it be something else?
What am I missing? Why is the stated rpm different from the actual measured rpm?
    Thanks for any help.
    Regards,
    PKP

  • TS1398 Update iPhone 4s to 6.1.3 (10B329) now I can't connect to any wifi networks at home or at work and all car Bluetooth systems will not connect either. Help! Extremely annoyed at apple for putting out software that causes such mayhem.

My iPhone 4s has been update as I said in subject bar.. Now can't connect to any of my cars Bluetooth systems. Also even more frustratingly can't connect to any wifi networks at home or work!!
How can apple put out such an update that causes so much grief and inconvenience to hundreds of people. Not to mention risking lives with Bluetooth kits not working...outraged!!!!!!

First, grow up.  Just because YOUR phone isn't working, doesn't mean Apple put out bad software.  I've not had any difficulty, nor has anyone else I know.  And just how is Apple risking lives with Bluetooth kits not working?  It's YOUR decision to talk on the phone or text and drive.  Not Apple's.
We're users here, volunteering our time to help others.  Posts like yours, which are whiny and ranting, simply means we're likely to ignore you and not provide you with any help.  Not to mention, it makes you look absolutely foolish.
Further making you look foolish is the fact that you haven't even asked a technical support question, nor have you provided anyone here with any troubleshooting steps you might have taken, including those recommended in the user guide.

  • Code drived stepper motor

    Hello,  first to
    apologize for my bad English
     I made a program for
driving a stepper motor CW and CCW with pulse.
     I used USB-6008 for
sending pulse to a motor driver..
Now I’m making a program for driving a motor with typed in
    code:
    F=4        // Forward
    (CW) 4 steps
    B=12     //Backward
    (CCW) 12 steps
    S=2000  //Speed 2000
    B=2        // … and so
    on…
Parser splits this code in 2 array’s then determinates a tip
of command and then sends them to a block for driving a motor..
    PROBLEM:  Motor
driving block is not responding ()
(In Motor driving block Instead of  pulse generator I’ve putted a random number
generator. Just to avoid constant connecting a hardware )
Pleas help mi solve this problem. Thanks in advance !

Step Motor bot only runs once.
If you pick Auto and run it, the block gets parsed into two arrays.  You pick out the first row of the array and send that to STM.  But there is nothing left to loop back and and set the other values in your parser.  Turn on Execution Highlighting and run it.  I'll think you see what is going on.
I think you still need to rethink your architecture.  I think the Action Engine nugget would help you figure out what you want to do.

  • Stepper motor

I have a labview program for controlling a stepper motor and allthe necessarry hardware. When I run the labview program there are no errors. However the motor does not move. A friend suggest to run MAX AUTOMATION but I have not. I am concerned if I run MAX I might damage the computer and corrupt the present configuration. I have connected STEP< DIRECTION< PRESET AND CLOCK from the drive board to four DIO. I have not specified that in MAX. What shall I do?

MAX gives you a very useful but limited ability to manipulate your DAQ board's i/o signals. It's often used in place of a full-fledged user program during initial setup and later during troubleshooting because it provides an NI-controlled interface to the DAQ hardware that isn't corrupted by possible user programming bugs. I think you probably ought to use MAX first to work out all the appropriate signals and connections before trying to use your friend's program.
You'll also need to understand the basic principle of operation for your friend's program and the stepper driver board. If you're using a different motor or driver, you may have incompatibilities.
What DAQ board do you have? Who makes the drive board? The signals you mentioned (STEP, DIRECTION, PRESET, and CLOCK) are not a familiar set to me. DIRECTION is very likely a digital bit to determine whether to step CW or CCW. Either STEP or CLOCK (or both?) should probably be a counter pulse train. I've usually seen either one or the other word used in a stepper interface, but not both at once so I'm not sure what's up with that. I really couldn't guess what function PRESET means. And you'll also need your digital GROUND or RETURN connection(s).
As for "assigning pins" to the functions: I would approach it a little differently. The issue is that you can't arbitrarily assign any old signal to any old pin. For example, some pins are for analog input and you can't generate digital bits on them.
So..... First determine what kind of signals you need for each functions (digital bit?, counter pulse train?), then find out which pins from you DAQ board can produce the right signal, and finally wire them up. At that point, you can choose either MAX or LabVIEW programming to put signals onto those pins. MAX will be best for initial testing, but the final app almost always needs to be based on programming.

  • How can I control a stepper motor drive using a DAQ card?

I need to control a simple CW/CCW stepper motor drive using a DAQ
card.  I simply need to output a 5 volt signal and then a drop in
the signal, and so on 200 times or steps for 1 revolution.  I have
desiigned the basic program, but do not know how to output the
    appropriate signal.
    Cheers,
    Matt

What DAQ card do you have? Ideally, one with a counter output to generate the steps, where you can control frequency. If you try to start the motor too fast (acceleration or abrupt application of fast pulses) it may stall out. Search in Help/Search for Examples for 'frequency' and 'pulse' for example of frequency generation. You can also use a digital output on the DAQ card to control direction.
If DAQ card does not have a counter, you coul do a software timed loop to toggle a digital output to generate the pulse train. It may not be fast enough nor accurate for your application, do not know from info you have given
