No adapter available for CRT studio display..?

Hi everybody,
just got a handmedown old crt studio display:
http://www.theapplecollection.com/design/macreleased/images/studio17_side.jpg
i thought i'd get an adapter and plug it to my imac to increase screen real estate (have been using a VGA display for some time like that)
Not so simple; the ADC connector seems like it's giving me no choice. I also have a latest macbook, also with mini-dvi output and same issue therefore.
Have been browsing forums but all i could dig was info related to the flat LCD panels and newer. Same for manufacturers, all adapters point to newer monitors.
So it's like either i keep for the looks or buy an old powermac G4/450 to suit..? Are these the only alternatives?
I imagine I'm not the very first person to ever come across this situation and maybe someone will be kind enough to offer some advice/share experience?
Cheers!

Chiz,
I own: Samsung 191T+, 19-inch LCD; Apple 20-inch LCD; Apple 23-inch LCD. There is no question (in my mind) that the Apples are sexier looking. I like the wide screen and the design. But, the price is stiff. The Samsung has a traditional 3:4 aspect ratio as opposed to the Apple 10:16. The Samsung models ending in the letter T have typically been of higher quality.
You should spend some time on the MWave website and look at the various Samsung models.
My Samsung has been connected to my iBook (via the analog (VGA)) port and to my PowerBook and PowerMac (via the digital (DVI)) port.
I won't buy ViewSonic because of bad experiences (5 blown high voltage power supplies) on their CRT models. I have no experience with Sony nor NEC.
Unless you are a gamer, you can ignore reponse time. Resolution is fixed for the screen size. LCDs have a native resolution; unlike CRTs. All manufacturers lie about contrast and brightness.
I recommend buying monitors from local stores. That way you can inspect YOUR monitor before you buy it.
I would recommend that you call Other World Computing and talk to them about video cards.

In Tiger i have in Color tab buttons for Gamma, White Point, Ambient Light, Calibration and Profile. In Leopard is only Profile and manual calibration.

  • 17in CRT Studio Display (Blue & White)-blinking power button

I have an Apple 17in Studio Display (CRT-Blue and White vintage) connected to my Power Mac G5.
Last night, I went home, and turned it on..or rather tried to turn it on but found it stayed black, with the power button blinking green->amber->green->amber etc.
As far as the computer was concerned, the monitor was still there and working (dual monitors...the mac kept the b&w as if it was turned on).
I swapped the monitors to the different video ports and the other monitor worked fine, so it's not the video card or vga->digital adapters.
I unplugged the monitor and replugged it, and it stayed with the blinking light.
Restarting the computer with the monitor attached had the computer still running as if the monitor was working just fine, so it seems to be getting what ever kind of feedback the mac gets to let it know a video card is there.
Anyone have any idea what could be up?

  • How to get old apple CRT studio display to stock settings?

The adjustments of my screen have been messed with and I keep trying to mess with it, but I can't seem to get it right. Is there a way to put the screen adjustment settings back to stock?

You shouldn't need any software. Any software that came with the display would have been for OS 9, anyway. They stopped selling the display before OSX came out, but OSX should be able to use it with its built-in drivers. Do you hear the startup sound from the display's power supply? Can you see the glow of the CRT filament?

  • HT3924 any HDMI converters available for iMac target display mode yet?

Just got this bed with a pop-out TV, and I'm thinking about getting an iMac 27" to use instead of a TV. Problem is, I'll also want to attach an Apple TV or Freeview box to my iMac - so I can play content from my iPad / watch live TV from the freeview box. This would be technically possible with target display mode, except the Apple TV / Freeview box don't have mini display port output.
Anyone know if there are HDMI to mini display port adapters available yet to facilitate this? From what I've read most of them only output from mini display port to hdmi, not the other way round.

I have a Asus HD6570 2GB Graphics Card in that computer with HDMI out, DVI out, and VGA out. I have a Asus HD6570 2GB Graphics Card in that computer with HDMI out, DVI out, and VGA out.
    None of those will work.
It has to have a Mini DisplayPort, not evn a Display port will work.

  • B&W 17" CRT Studio Display Monitor

I have this connected to my G5 P/Mac which works fine.
At present it is powered through my old G3, can I power the monitor directly through a power lead to the mains supply?
I think the power lead from the G3 might do this?

It sounds like the monitor is re-calibrating. When you re-calibrate an Apple CRT the monitor goes though a self analysis and flashes solid colors on the screen. (Other brands are not as tightly integrated with the Mac OS so you must do this by hand, er... eye... er... whatever.) What OS are you using? I know there was a setting in OS 9 & OS 10.3 to re-calibrate automatically periodically. Check the Monitors/Displays control under “color.” I always switched off that feature and re-calibrated when I had a free moment.

  • DVI to ADC adapter STudio display will not power on when used with Mac mini

I have a Mac mini and I just purchased a used apple 17" CRT studio display. I bought the DVI to ADC Adapter as recommended by my Apple store. When I hook everything up (I have checked and redone this two times) The power light will come on for about a second when presses. When the mini powers up there is a blank dark screen. I would appreciate any ideas on this. thanks!

    Hi
unfortunately I think the Apple store have sold you the wrong item.
I'm almost certain the DVI to ADC adapter only works with ADC based flat panel displays. DVI ports can output digital or analogue signals (or a combination of the two). The adapter seems to provide digital, which is why it works with the LCD displays, but not analogue, which is why it doesn't work with the CRT displays.
Confusingly Apple did a 17" Studio display both as a CRT and LCD.
Dr. Bott do a similar adapter but they explicitly state it's not compatible with the 17" CRT.
Unfortunately I'm not sure there's a solution, as the display has an ADC connector yet I'm not aware of any adapters available that will work.

  • Mac Mini and 17" Studio Display CRT (ADC)

Is there someone who can tell me if there is a DVI to ADC Adapter to get a Mac Mini to work with the beautiful 17" Studio Display CRT (ADC). Which is an anolog monitor, the adapters i can find work only on LCD (digital) screens.
    Please let me know...
    Ger

Do NOT buy the Apple DVI to ADC adapter, it does not work with CRT displays.
The 'geniuses' at the Apple store recommended that I buy this adapter. It didn't work. I have since found out (after extensively surfing the web) that I am not the only one who has been recommended to buy this adapter by an Apple 'genius'. However, It is simply not designed to work with the CRT's, it is LCD only.
There is no way to make the ADC 17" CRT studio display work with new non ADC Apple hardware. Apple have simply dismissed it, much to the annoyance of all the customers who had purchased this perfectly respectable display.
If you want to use your Mac Mini you will need to use either a non-Apple display or one of their new displays. Your perfectly functioning CRT is now a doorstop.

  • New Mac Mini / DVI / Apple 17" Studio Display

    Greetings all.
I am contemplating purchasing new Mac Mini.
Currently using Mac mini / DVI adapter/ older Apple 17" studio display.
I do not intend monitor change at present.
Question is, which display adapter would allow me to use older DVI adapter/Apple 17" studio display?
Thanks for you time, looking forward to your response.

  • Studio Display - Family M2454 with NVIDIA GeForce2 MX

I've recently acquired an older Studio Display LCD (M2454) and would like to use it with my G4 867-MHz PowerPC G4 (Quicksilver). However, while the Mac works great with my analog CRT Studio Display, whenever I plug in the LCD display, the Mac will not start up. Starts up fine whenever the LCD ADC connector is not connected to the video card (whether the CRT display is connected or not.)
Any hints for troubleshooting this situation? Is the digital side of the NVIDIA GeForce2 MX dead? or is the LCD dead? or neither and something else needs attention? I've run the 2004 NVIDIA Firmware Update 1.1 successfully.
Power Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.4)   have several other Macs

I have the same problem. I had the CPU and the display packed in suitcases and when I got home the computer won't start up with the display plugged in. It will start up normally with no display--or I assume so since I can't see anything--and I can also use it as a FireWire target drive using my G3 PowerBook. This is very frustrating.

  • Re: Problems with USB hub in Studio Display

Ok, so I read a couple of posts here about USB hub problems with studio displays. Well... lucky me. I just got a used 17" studio LCD from craigslist.com (a local person) only to discover a day after getting it that it abruptly tries to go to sleep on its own; or the usb hubs in the back stopped responding; and/or it would intermittently flicker on and off like it was trying to go to sleep but couldn't. The screen itself is perfectly fine and clear when its own and I can get it to stay on for awhile with no problems, but just from my impression from the thing, this problem is going to continue. Was there ever a reasonable solution for this USB issue? My computer was running fine before on a 17" CRT Studio Display. And unfortunately, I've already given that one away.
<--- Poor student, so I'm hoping I'm not SOL.

Is your USB hub a self-powered one? Meaning, does it have its own external power supply?
If it is, make sure its power supply is plugged in to a live source. Also, some self-powered hubs have a small selector switch, allowing the choice of bus or self power; if it has such a switch, be sure it is not set to "bus".
