No Airport connection with Tiger

I have the iMac listed below, and a new MacBook Pro. I was having trouble with our home network through our modem and router (Speedstream and Dlink respectively) so I switched over to a 2wire modem/router HomePortal. I did the switch over with the Pro, everything worked great, both hardwired and wireless. I then went to put in the WEP password on the iMac and it says that there was an error in joining the specified network. After trying a few things that I knew, I decided to bypass the wireless and use the longest ethernet cord I had...however, even when plugged into the 2wire, my iMac will not act like it is connected. Network Diagnostics says that I am not connected to either the internet or any modem. When I try to get into the 2wire with its address, I come up with nothing.
When I do all the same things with my Pro, everything works fine. A friend told me to switch the encryption back to WPA, or upgrade my iMac to Leopard because he had the same problems and they all went away once switched over to Leopord. But went I checked the 2wire, its only option is to either disable the encryption or use different bit options of WEP. I'd rather not disable the security, but that seems to be one of my last options, bar upgrading to Leopard, or getting a Time Capsule, which I've been thinking about.

The ethernet I would not know of, but I have had this problem before too with the wireless. Infact, 1 of my computers had this problem and one of them worked perfectly fine too. I also have a 2-wire gateway. I use a WPA pass-code.
It would tell me connection timeout and all sorts of other stuff. I restarted the 2-wire device and that worked for me. Then I decided to use time capsule as a second wireless network so if 2 wire didn't work for my computer, I would be able to switch to the time capsule (which would be using double-nat, which is easy to set up), if the network didn't work. If you had time capsule and wanted only 1 wireless network, then go to http://home click on wireless networks and on the right side of the screen should be a wireless disable button.
*This shouldn't be a problem with the iMac* unless you cant connect to any network like your neighbors of something.

  • Having intermittent Airport connectivity with a 2010 6 core MacPro.  Any help?

Having intermittent Airport connectivity with a 2010 6 core MacPro. When it works has low bars on status graph.  Laptop set up next to it has no connect problems. Airport utility has shown no Airports a couple times when the laptop showed all. When first joined network, staus bar is full, then drops to one or two bars. Would this be an antenna or card being loose? Is it user friendly fix, or bring it to Apple? Thanks in advance.

Would this be an antenna or card being loose?
    Sounds like it.
Is it user friendly fix, or bring it to Apple?
If under AppleCare, bring it to Apple. If not, you can probably find instructions to fix a loose antenna connector yourself.

  • Connecting with Tiger to Samba server?

    Hi all,
We have a new G4 PowerBook running OS X 10.4.3. We have a Linux server running Samba which other machines (running 10.3) are able to connect to via Samba with no problems. Tiger cannot seem to connect. I did some research, and it looks like Tiger requires password authentication. However, several of the workarounds I have found appear to be contradictory. Can anyone succesfully use Samba to connect from Tiger to a Linux machine?
    Thanks,
    Matt

Depending on the Linux box -Mine is SuSE 10 and I recently had a Fedora 3 box. They use different versions of Samba. Some Tiger likes and some it doesn't. In Fedora, I had no problems with encrypted passwords. In SuSE 10, however, Tiger would not connect with encryption turned on. It needed to be turned off on both Tiger and Linux. Let me know if you need any help with this or if it helps.

  • Splitting Airport Connection with a PC

HI all, i was wondering if it is possible to share the original Airport connection on my AGP Sawtooth 500 with my ugly beige box sitting next to it...Any help is appreciated...thanks!

    Steve,
you are in the right direction. Your partner can install a card on her PC but it is also possible (and sometimes more desirable) to add wireless capability using a USB device (linksys.com has these devices).
    Hope this helps.

  • Regaining Airport connection with WEP and Siemens Gigaset

After loosing connection with MBP and Macbook and latest security- and Airport updates, reinstalling of IO80211Family.kext vers.1.5.1 helped.
It's included in Airport Extreme Update 2007 001.
Extracted it with Pacifist and copied it the Extensions folder.(as root)
    Important!!
    Repairing permissions and reboot.
Took me two days to find out.
Maybe it helps for other third party routers too.
Intel MacMini works with all latest updated. (so far)

Can anyone talk me though what to do since I know very little about wireless networking. I am quite prepared to buy a new wireless adaptor for the PC, but don't want to buy something that isn't going to work.
Unfortunately, you didn't provide much information about your PC or the current external wireless adapter to be of much help. WPA was first supported with WinXP w/SP1; which OS is your PC running? Likewise, early versions of wireless adapters only supported WEP. What is the make/model of yours? Does your PC support PC cards, PCI cards (internal), and/or USB devices?

  • No Airport connection with Mac Pro

I cannot get access to my (password protected) WLAN modem with my Mac Pro. I have to go via Ethernet through my Powerbook. It only works when I set the modem to require no password for Internet access, once WPA is enabled, the Mac Pro Airport connection fails even though it "sees" the network alright.
What am I to do? Any settings in the DSL modem properties perhaps?
    Most grateful for answers!

    That sounds like progress!
WEP / WPA and WPA2 all use a numerical (hexadecimal) key.
You give the software a readable phrase - and it turns the phrase into the number. But sometimes the same phrase becomes a different number.
    Try this. Turn on WPA.
On your wireless-connected-Powerbook. Go to the network list. Click edit - and click show password.
You'll see the HEX version of the passphrase. $afbc0232...
Try THAT number on the Mac Pro.

  • Sharing Airport connection with Ethernet - Self Assigned IP

WHy is the ethernet port getting a self assigned IP Address. I want to share the wifi connection with the ethernet to run a cable to my ps3. Need to update trophies so i can wipe it. Wifi doesnt work on PS3 at this time(reason for wiping)

This is a major debacle with Apple. I contacted support and they informed me that they don't support this function.
After many hours of playing around and reading forums this is quite easy (once you know what to do)!
Setup internet sharing (airpor to ethernet)
Go to Network under system preferences
View the Ethernet icon (should be yellow as it self assigns the IP)
Click on TCP/IP and in the Configure IPv4 menu, select "Using DHCP with manual address"
Set the Ethernets IP address to 192.168.2.1
Set the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0 (255.255.0.0 is default on OSX 10.6)
On the NIC tring to use the shared connection (PS3/XBOX/Network DVD/PC), you should just be able to "Obtain IP and DNS Automatically". If not, enter the following:
    IP Address(connecting device): 192.168.2.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1
This has nothing to do with the IP of the airport connection or your router, this is the internal Ethernet port settings on the hardware (as far as I can tell).
My internal Airport IP is 10.0.1.4, with 10.0.1.1 for airport extreme, and the self assigned IP was 169.254.151.92 on my shared Ethernet port on the Mac when it wasn't configured properly.
Let me know if this works!!!

  • Unreliable AirPort Connection with New C2D MacBook

I know there are quite a few threads about this exact same topic going around right now, but I've followed all the suggestions out there with absolutely no success... So here's my version of this sob story.
I bought my new C2D MacBook last week and thought getting online would be as easy as turning it on and connecting to my existing wireless network, using a D-Link router. I was able to connect immediately with a full AirPort signal, but the performance has been spotty at best. Some web pages load immediately, some load very slowly, some don't load at all. Mail and iChat are never quite sure whether I'm connected or not, and go back and forth between being connected and offline. With other computers on this network I've enjoyed wireless download speeds as fast as 220 kbps, but with certain downloads on this computer I've seen speeds start out at 150 kbps and drop down to a staggering 4 kbps... I might as well go back to dial-up.
Other pertinent information... I've had 3 other Macs hooked up to this wireless network before (2 G4-based laptops and a first generation Intel iMac, all with AirPort Extreme) with absolutely no problems. I've followed all the advice that others have posted about this so far, like updating the firmware on the router, resetting it, resetting my computer, creating a new user, trashing my preferences, all with no effect.
I was reading another thread where they discussed how the brand new MacBooks are shipping with the new 802.11 n cards, which is great for the future... But does that mean my existing wireless network is now obsolete, thanks to my new laptop? Am I out of luck until the new AirPort Base Station starts shipping eventually? Considering the money I just dropped for my new laptop, I'm not exactly keen on spending another $200 just to get my new laptop online. Nowhere in any of my documentation or even in System Profiler is there any mention of this new technology.
I've basically been an Apple customer and advocate my entire life, and I'm very disappointed in my latest purchase. You're supposed to be able to take a Mac out of the box and have it work, which is one of the reasons why I buy from Apple instead of anyone else. Hopefully this will be resolved soon!!

FYI, someone posted a novel suggestion in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3875203
"After a bit of online research I found some Linux folks using 'newer' Atheros wifi cards (like the Macbook C2D) were having the same problems with their driver software. The workaround was to either wait for a patch, or change the beacon interval on one's wifi router.
One cannot do this with the Airport Express, however, I have found that increasing the multicast rate prevented this problem from happening again. In my own mind, I reasoned anything that improves network performance should make things better, and it did. My setup is 802.11g only, WPA2 and a multicast rate of 12 or above seems to do the trick."

  • Airport connecting with a 3g network

    Dear someone,
Is its posible to conect a airport express with a 3g usb dongel? Becouse somtime in some situation you can't get a internet by kabel or adsl 2+ so you need a 3g Network. And I have seen some routers that support this.
So if it is posible what netwerk in Holland can I use??
    Kind regards,
    Nitin

Since the USB port on the AirPort Express will only support a compatible printer,  it would not be possible to use the AirPort Express in the manner that you asked about.

  • No Airport Connection Using Tiger Server

Using clean install Tiger Server on Pudding Basin iMac
Can connect to the internet via cable connection from router but cannot configure Airport. iMac can "See" the network but when I enter the WEP code, it says that there is an error connecting to the network.
I am sure that it is a box that I have left un-ticked or ticked but since I do not understand the terminology, I do not know where to start. I thought that I would just use a 'Wizard' to get going but I cannot find one.
Is there a kindly soul on this forum who can point me in the right direction?
    Warmly,
    Malcolm

  • Time Capsule Airport Connection with Deutsche Telekom 300HS VDSL Modem

I just swithched my Deutsche Telekom connection to VDSL 50 but can no longer connect to the internet.  There are a couple of configurations I have tried:
    a.    The Speedport 300 HS modem connected directly to the Time Capsule.
    b.    As above, but with the Speedport W700V router in between the modem and Time Capsule.
The green light on the modem is illuminated to confirm the VDSL is available.
Could somebody please advise the correct settings in the Airport Utility to make either configuration above work?
    Thanks,
    Paul

This is the easiest one.. just use TC in bridge. You go to the airport utility, manual setup, select internet tab and under connection sharing.. off bridge mode.
    a.    The Speedport 300 HS modem connected directly to the Time Capsule.
This is harder as it depends on the authentication system used by your VDSL..
The TC has limited options.. either DHCP.. so the vdsl has to pass the public IP as in half bridge type system.. or it has to be PPPoE authentication.. as that is the only other alternative offered.

  • Airport connection with PowerBookG4

I just installed a wifi card on my freebox.
The connection works perfectly with a recent IbookG4.
However, it does not with my (quite old) PowerBookG4.
It seems unable to recognize the password.
I do not know if I have some updates to do (I have OSX.10.4).
I have made all that I can imagine.
I do not knwo if I have to use Airport express er something like that. Probably my airport card is of an old type
    thanks
    powerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Zweistein, Welcome to the discussion area!
Assuming that your old PowerBook G4 has an original (802.11b) AirPort card, you will need to:
Ensure that your wireless base station is working in an 802.11b compatible mode (either "802.11b only" or "802.11b/g" mode).
Ensure that you are NOT using WPA2. Your old PowerBook can not use WPA2 encryption.

  • Windows 7 Airport Connection With No Internet???

I have setup Win7 Ultimate to run under BootCamp. On the Mac side I am running the latest rev of Snow Leopard and my Wired and Wireless  connections allow me to access my Airport Extreme NAS (USB Drive attached to AP-Extereme) and also access the internet.
On the Boot Camp side of things I have installed all the Windows files, and "repaired them twice. I have the same Wired and Wireless connections available; however, I am able to read and write to the NAS Device but there is no internet connection. I unplug the Ethernet cable and plug it into a Mac and a PC and they have Internet Connection, so I know it's not the signal from the Airport Extreme to the Ethernet Jack.
Has anyone experienced this anomoly and if so is there a fix? It just seems weird that i can use the connection through the Etrhernet cable to access the NAS Device but it does not allow the Internet to connect...

After resetting the firmware on both airports, I unplugged the modem and the airports for half an hour and setup everything again. This time, everything worked.

  • A Fix for dropping Airport Connection with a DLink 614+ router

I found these suggestions buried deep in another post, and thought they warrented reposting here. I made these changes to my router setup, and have not had a dropped connection since. Good Luck to All!
"A few notes on what has helped my connection. I have a DI 614. Under the Advanced tab: Disable 4x mode. Set Preamble Type to Long. Set the basic and TX rates to 1-2-5.5-11. Lastly, per advice earlier in the thread, I set the Beacon interval to 50."
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I had the same kind of problems (VERY unstable wireless connections, pretty slow when connected and not lasting for more than 2/3 minutes) until I got my Macbook Pro back from the store today. The Airport card was changed and the wireles connection is now workin like a charm... Undoubtedly hardware related problem in my case. Try to have your Airport card exchanged as well. good luck.
