No Audio; headphones, internal speakers, nothing.

I'm sorry for another thread, I know there are a lot more that address this problem. I've read a lot of them, none of them have helped me.
Alright so my audio won't work at all. I was plugged into external speakers and then it just stopped. My internal speakers don't work, my headphone jack doesn't work. There is no crossed out audio mark on my volume bar like others have reported. However my headphone jack does glow red, like the others. I've tried the toothpick trick, didn't work. I wiggled the headphones, didn't work. I put it and and out a lot, didn't work. I can't hit that magic switch everyone is talking about.
I called Apple and they told me to go to the store. The Genius Bar told me they'd have to replace my entire board since I have a crack on the top right and I guess it's just pretty beat up. He said he could estimate it at around $300, but it could go up to $600. Now before I start saving up for a brand new mac, I'm just wondering if there are any other ways to save my audio.

Sounds to me that like there's a break in the logic board and some sort of open and/or short in the trace (wiring) as a result. Something simple like a solder break might be easierer to repair, but the diagnosis sounds more severe.
Here's an example of how much a logic board costs:

Now if all you need is a way to get audio, you can get the following. It's just a suggestion. There are similar devices on the market and other places to obtain them (including this model) other than from Apple.

  • MacBook Pro: No Audio from Internal Speakers - Solution

Issue: (MacBook Pro late 2010) Absolutely no audio to internal speakers after OSX has booted up.
Digital Out is the only available output device shown within System Settings
    Analog headphones work
    Digital Out works
Bootup "BONG" works (and is of course now perma loud after PRAM reset... uggh)
Things I have tried from least drastic to greatest in the following order:
    sudo killall coreaudiod
    Clear PRAM
Using Deploy Studio (first performing DiskUtility format as well):
re-image MacBook with a the same original OSX Lion image it has been working with for the past 3 months
re-image MacBook with previous Snow Leopard image (obviously used to work)
Not using Deploy Studio (but first performing DiskUtility format, using original supported installation media: DVD, Apple Store):
Installed Snow Leopard (no audio), then upgraded to Lion through Apple Store (still no audio)
Installed Snow Leopard using installation DVD provided with MacBook Pro (< waste of time as the above step didn't work either, but including here for completeness)Note: Even the "Welcome to Mac" intro movie is silent, audio controls are crossed out
Gentoo Live DVD _works_ (after enabling Front Speakers using alsamixer other wise it was also muted and no audio would work except through head phones)
Well holly $%#$%,  %^#&^. After performing step 5, and enabling Front Speakers using alsamixer, I now have audio in OSX Lion
I believe this happened after I used the Mini Stereo jack for Head Phone use.
How in the ______ did this happen? And why did it take a third party software to _somehow_ enable audio to the internal speaker _after_ OSX Lion completely booted?????
Note to all: You can probably use a Ubuntu Live CD to perform step 5. Or any live cd that loads up Intel Audio drivers.

I appreciate your response. I still have concerns:
The red-lite is off when my issue is happening.
The red-lite is on when my issue is happening.
It was not consistent. My concern is the Macintosh operating system not detecting the change. My other concern is it can _not_ be only a hardware switching issue, as Alsamixer, a software program, can make the switch toggle between off or on. If it was a hardware-only issue, Alsamixer would be a fail. And, if it is actually a hardware-only issue triggering a software 1 or 0 switch somewhere:
My final concern is 'where is this setting being stored' as clearning PRAM and reinstalling entire operating system after opertating system (Leopard to Lion and back to Leopard) after a disk wipe has no effect.
I guess it sounds to me, that OSX tries to be too user-friendly by not allowing peeps to change those options themselves. Is there a dscl command switch I can use to manually override such an effect? (Just in case I don't happen to have anything to stick into the mini-jack port)
Regardless, your answer is correct. Thank you both (Ciao and Allan Jones)

  • No audio from internal speakers until headphones plugged in

This is for a Hp dv 6 with beats audio.I have no audio from the internal speakers until i plug the headphones in , when I get sound from both the internal speakers and the headphones.
I did find some people had the same issue which was resolved after changes in the realtek HD audio controller but I cannot find the audio controller on my laptop , which I am sure is different from the realtek audio drivers
I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the audio drivers without any success.

  • No audio from internal speakers

My Macbook will not play audio from the internal speakers. It will, however, play through a set of headphones or external speakers. I have tried going to the preferences, but all it shows in the "sounds" area is digital out and there are no controls. I have also tried starting in safe mode and then rebooting, and still no sound from the internal speakers. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Robin

Normally when the digital audio has been switched on there is a red light coming from the headphone jack. You could still see if clicking the switch works but with no light there may be a different problem involved and you may need to talk to Apple support.

  • How to get line in audio to internal speakers

What procedure is needed to connect line in audio to the internal speakers?  For example, playing music from my iPad through the macbook Pro's speakers. Or from any other audio source, such as a USB connector?

Weird. I just installed Creative PlayCenter from the driver CD and after the reboot, line-in now comes out the rear speakers again. Must've been some system files updated or something, because CMSS is still off according to PlayCenter. When I turn CMSS on, the line-in stops coming out rear, but turning it off makes it work!!!! So it's sorted, but still have no idea why it screwed up and why I needed PlayCenter installed to change the CMSS settings.

  • Headphones / internal speakers switching issues

This is an issue that has been coming up on these boards for several years - I wanted to add my personal solution.
Occasionally, when I take a headphone or speaker jack out of the socket, my PB does not switch back to internal speakers. As some people have suggested, putting the headphone jack back in and out a few times usually helps. If you don't have one handy do this - gently but sharply blow into the headphone jack socket (use a compressed air can if you have one!). I did this with the system prefs pane open on sound and saw the output source instantly change back to internal speakers.
This is a work around rather than a solution, but it's low tech and it works for me! Suggests that the sensor that allows the PB to determine whether headphones are in or not is too sensitive, or not releasing, or something.

maybe try creating new user in Accounts preference, log in as new user and see how it works.
if it works under new user, could be software issue.

  • No audio through internal speakers

Audio works through the HDMI to external screen. When I unplug the HDMI the speaker icon says there is no audio device installed. Can't seems to figure out what is preventing local speakers. When I look at playback devices, only external screen shows up. It's ENVY dv6 running Window 8.

    Hi gb1768,
I see that you are having audio issues after the recent Windows Update.  There are a few troubleshooting steps you can try below to resolve the issue and after that if you are still have no luck then there is a walkaround for the Windows Update.
The first thing to try is this HP support document No Sound from Speakers. It has a number of good troubleshooting steps including using the built-in Windows troubleshooter.
Another solution is to uninstall the driver manually then force Windows to reinstall it. Follow the steps below to do that.
Step 1: Open Device Manager and open Sound, video and game controller section.
Step 2: Right click on your audio driver and select Uninstall.
Step 3: Restart the computer. Windows will then force in the driver on startup.
The last troubleshooting step is to try creating a new user account to see if the issue is only affecting the one account. This can happen is something has been corrupted in the one user profile. This HP support document Managing User Accounts and Logins look under the section Creating a new account in Windows 8.
Here is the workaround for the Windows Update:
At this point, unless you want to reinstall the operating system, the only other option is to tackle the update, KB2962407.
Uninstalling the Windows Update, then hiding it, is the only method of eliminating the issue if it caused by this update. Here is the procedure for uninstalling the update:
Step 1. Go into Control Panel, then click on “Programs and Features”.
Step 2. Click on “View Installed Updates”. Look for the update with the ID number KB2962407.
Step 3. Right-click on the update and select “Uninstall”. Restart the computer.
Next, here is the procedure for hiding the update:
Step 1. Go into Control Panel, then click on “Windows Updates”.
Step 2. Click on “Check for Updates”. When the process is completed, is should find important update(s) available. Clicking on the message will open a window where the important update(s) is.
Step 3. Right-click on the KB2962407 update and select “Hide Update”. This will prevent the update from being installed next time Windows Updates are being installed.

  • No audio with Internal Speakers Mac Book Pro 17inch

i have reinstalled os from OSX DVD  10.7.0
after that i can hear the audio only from earphones

Go ahead and complete the Software Updates to 10.7.5... that may or may not solve your problem. If it doesn't then your audio output port may be 'stuck' in digital mode. There's a tiny switch inside that can be 'reset', usually, by unplugging and replugging headphones multiple times (fast) or by using a slightly dulled toothpick.
You can usually (but not always) tell whether or not you're stuck in digital mode by looking to see if there is a red light on in the port.

  • No audio out on internal speakers or headphones from external device

I'm using an intel iMac 17" I tried to plug in an external cassette deck, and listen to it through the internal speakers. Even though all system prefs for audio work as expected, and I can see the audio meters on screen operating, nothing will induce it to play sound either through the internal speakers, or headphones.
The audio is certainly going in there, as it recorded perfectly in iMovie. The internal speakers work perfectly for alerts, iTunes, the web, everything. But no external device will work.
I've tried an iPod, a microphone, and a cassette deck, all with the same result. I've launched Garage Band as this can upset the midi player, but it's fine. I've visually checked the settings, no problem.
As an alternative I also tried an iMic and stopped using the jack input on the iMac. Still nothing. I plugged headphones into the iMic, nothing. No audio will play unless it's already on the Mac. External audio goes in there and dies before it reaches the speakers.
All the visual info I get in the sound panel regarding connection options, output etc, is exactly as expected, I just can't get any audio at all.
Does anyone have any suggestions? There's only a few day's warranty left...
    Many thanks.

    Hello David,
Thanks for the pointer. I looked at the website for Linein, and I already have Audio Hijack pro installed, which contains this application. When I ask AH to record the system audio, the volume meters are dead, I hear nothing, and record nothing - unlike iMovie.
When I do ask it to record, I can hear a thumping sound from the Mac speakers, but nothing else.
I'm really desperate for a solution to this; I can't understand why it's so hard to achieve. If it was just the line in socket I'd suspect that, but a USB connection as well? I don't understand that at all.

  • When external speakers are plugged in to headphone jack, sound randomly goes back to internal speakers or digital audio setting, then back again

I have an essentially new MacBook Pro with Lion and all updates applied, and am wondering if this is a hardware or software problem.  Essentially with something plugged into the headphone jack, things work as they are supposed to for a while, then the sound will switch back to internal speakers, or sometimes 'digital out' (I can watch it change in the system settings), and then often switch back.  It doesn't seem to follow any sort of pattern or be related to any specific application that could be open, and happens with different sources of audio (iTunes, streaming from the web), and different external speakers or headphones plugged in.

Sounds hardware related. If it's brand new, and you're still under warranty I would have it checked out.
I have not experienced this on my computer.
As I understand it, you have analog RCA outputs from an 1/8" to left and right RCA outputs. when you're randomly using the computer, it'll switch to internal speakers, then to digital audio, back to your stereo analog external speakers.
This should not be happening and if it's happening with streaming content (I am unaware of anything that streams in 5.1 digital audio) then this must be something that an apple specialist should look at and consider.
Does this happen with the headphone jack out? when you hold your finger over the headphone jack area does a red beam come out of it *blinking* or just on? This will be a good indicator that your audio hardware is faulty. are you running HDMI out?

  • The last few times I've used headphones in my iPad, the audio has been all messed up to the extent where it's better to just use the internal speakers and not the headphones. I've tried multiple pairs of headphones to no avail. Help?

The last few times I've used headphones in my iPad, the audio has been all messed up to the extent where it's better to just use the internal speakers and not the headphones. I've tried multiple pairs of headphones to no avail.
The iPad was bought in mid-June, but I did not get extended Apple-Care warranty on it. Any idea of what's happenening?

Multiple means how many? If only 2 or 3, they could all be faulty. Try the headphones in some other device, to make sure they are OK. Or there could be something wrong with the headphone port.
Your iPad is still covered by the 1-year warranty so you should make a Genius appointment and have it looked at.
Another thing to try is to plug in the headphone jack a few times in succession to see if it frees up something inside the port.

    Hi:
Does your notebook have an Intel or AMD processor?
If it has an AMD processor, follow the instructions I posted at the link below for how to get the XP audio driver to work.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-PC-Sound-and-Audio/multimedia-audio-controller-driver-for-wind...
If it has an Intel processor try doing the same thing but with this driver instead...
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-44349-3&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...
You would browse to:  C:\SWSetup\sp28552\SMAXWDM\W2K_XP\smwdmATI, and select the SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio device from the list.
There are no Vista or W7 drivers for the card reader (Base System Device), so try the XP driver.  I think it will work.

  • How do I play audio from my headphone jack and internal speakers?

How do I play audio from my headphone jack and internal speakers at the same time ? I have a splitter for my audio jack so that when i connect up my second monitor I can have it so it also plays audio as well as anything else i have connected into the jack but how do i let the internal speakers emit sound at the same time?

    Hello,
If you mean the internal speakers in your Mac, you can't play audio through them at the same time you have anything plugged into the headphone jack. When you plug something into the headphone jack, it disconnects the internal speakers.
