No audio in Windows Vista Home Basic - Compaq Presario c765TU

Hi all,
A couple of days ago, my Compaq Presario c765TU lost audio while fastforwarding through a movie I was playing on VLC. The video was stored on an external hard drive. Tried playing music and video files stored on the laptop's local drive, still no sound.
Audio drivers and BIOS have been updated. Audio devices are listed as installed and working properly in the Device Manager.
Contemplating on doing a clean re-install of Windows Vista to see if that will work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's hard to know exactly which it is at this point.  It could be one of two things.  The speakers have failed or the jack detect pin located inside the headphone jack has failed.  A non-functional jack detection pin would cause the system to route audio to the headphone jack constantly instead of the internal speakers.
If you want to be absolutely certain it is not a software issue (corrupted registry possibly), you can try the system recovery making sure to backup your files.  I suspect this is a hardware issue, but it could very well be a corrupted registry causing the jack detection pin not to be read properly.

  • Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit

I'm looking at the customisable configurations, and I see that you offer 8GB RAM but that a 64-bit system is required to support it. At the same time, the only option that explicity says it's 64-bit is the Business edition of Vista, which I definitely do not need. Is there any way to specify an order with Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit?
Yes, I know what I'm talking about and I need the power, but none of the administrative nonsense associated with the Business addition. From Wikipedia:
"Similar to Windows XP Home Edition, Home Basic targets budget-conscious users not requiring advanced media support for home use. ... Home Basic supports one physical CPU, but with multiple cores. 64-bit Home Basic supports up to 8 GB of RAM. ... Comparable to Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, Windows Vista Business Edition targets the business market. It includes all the features of Home Basic with the exception of Parental Controls and the Windows Vista Standard theme. This edition can join and participate in a Windows Server domain. It includes Internet Information Services, fax support, Rights Management Services client, Encrypting File System, system image backup and recovery, Offline Files, a single user Remote Desktop server, ad-hoc P2P collaboration capabilities, Shadow Copy support which provides access to previous versions of files, support for Tablet PCs, and other business oriented management features. The Vista Business edition supports up to two physical CPUs. 64-bit Business supports 128 GB of RAM."
I'm looking at a configuration with a high-power, dual-core processor and 8GB RAM with the 2GB disk cache on top of that for, among other things, high-volume, intense audio processing. None of the extras associated with Business are things I need, but I do need a 64-bit system to utilise 8GB RAM. Frankly, I just really don't want to have to pay $79 simply for the RAM support, I don't want to deal with it through Microsoft, and although the basic edition is apparently not eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade, I can cross that bridge when I come to it.
    My questions:
If I'm configuring a machine with >3GB installed memory, will it by default be configured with the 64-bit version of the edition of Windows I've selected?
If so, will there be a cost difference? There is no cost difference between the listed 32- and 64-bit versions of the Business edition.
If not, is there any way to make this simple change on my order? Does Levono even ship Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit?
    Solved!

SInce Lenovo don't offer either type of Vista Home in a X64 version, the answer is quite simply, no.

Sweating on the OS cost when you are planning to put an expensive 8 GB of RAM into a system seems to be quite cost-ineffective IMO!

  • Windows Vista Home basic drivers for internet

How do I get drivers for Windows Vista Home basic edition to work with Windows vista on my mac. Can't connect to internet on vista.

    Hi,
    for the obvious:
After the Vista installation, did you install the Apple drivers from the OSX Leopard Installation DVD ?
If not, boot into Vista and insert the OSX Installation DVD that came with your iMac.
The Driver Setup usually starts automatically.
All drivers needed are on that DVD.

    Every time Firefox opened

Firefox can have multiple home pages if you wish. Each home page that will open when starting Firefox is separated by the "|" character.

    Hi,
I'm trying to install the MINI SAP CD in the Windows Vista Home Basic, but I'm not getting success. I made download of Virtual Microsoft PC but for the version Home Basic, it doesn't have function. Somebody could help me please ?

According to note 1040931 you need the following kernel versions to make it work:
    SAP Kernel 6.40:
DW-Package (183):    operating system version check
J2EE-Package (n.a.): operating system version check
NTCLUST.SAR (n.a.):  crashes in MMC and Resource Monitor
SAPINST (n.a.):      installation support on Windows Server 2008
Note that SAP does not yet fully support these operating systems.

  • It just makes me so mad while using windows vista home basic in bootcamp.

there are sooo many problems while running in windows vista home basic..
    First..
the computer gets really **** hot after several minutes and the fans just never kick in at all...
    second..
the system is soo unstable, is it because of the high temperature?
    what all of these about??
is there any problem with my drivers or anything?
i thought apple says that windows will work perfectly in bootcamp..
i'm sooo disappointed. and i really need it to work well most of the times
but what is going on ? please..
    i have the 2.5ghz MBP..
but it's like a 0.5 ghz while running windows.. sooo unstable and there are soo many problems!
also it shuts down by itself .. the blue screen says physical memory n stuff...?
it that my problem or the computer ?
    did i do anything wrong?
    someone please help.
i don't want my mbp runs like a tiger or something only under MAC OS x. and like a weak sick cat loses all its power while running windows?
if I have done any thing wrong .. please somebody tell me and i'm gonna fix it.
but if everybody has the same issue .. i think i will be just sooo mad of buying this computer..

Essentially all you have done here is create a list of complaints without really providing a lot of information about your problems. Maybe if you gave us some specifics we could help. And to answer one of your questions: yes, you can have windows running absolutely fine in BootCamp. My Vista copy works fine without an problems and it is quite fast. I've actually never had a Blue Screen with it. It is true that macs as a rule use fewer system resources and so will probably be faster for some basic tasks, but it shouldn't be too a point where you notice much of a difference.
Now for that memory problem you described. How much RAM does your computer have. Vista uses a lot of RAM and if you run a lot of applications at once in Vista, you might be overloading your RAM.

  • Compatibility with Windows Vista Home Basic?

Does Fireworks work with Windows Vista Home Basic? Will it
    run on my OS?

I have Vista Home Premium and Fireworks CS3 works fine with
one exception. The bitmap editing tools are not compatible with
Aero. Copying an answer I wrote two days ago...
You can do one of two things. Turn off Aero completely or
have Vista disable Aero only when Fireworks is running.
    For the latter,
    1) go to where Fireworks is installed, usually
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Fireworks CS3
    2) Right-click on Fireworks.exe and select Properties
    3) Select the the Compatibility tab
    4) Under Compatability mode label, select the checkbox for
Run this program in compatability mode for: and select Windows XP
(Service Pack 2) from the drop down box.
    5) Under the Settings label, check Disable desktop
    composition
    6) Click OK.
Now, when you start up Fireworks, your system will flicker as
Aero is disabled, but your bitmap tools will work. When you close
Fireworks, your system will flicker as Aero returns.

    in
    this thread
The post on 09/13/2008 by lallsopp claims that desktop
composition does not need to be disabled, but I find that my bitmap
tools do not work properly unless I do. You can try it both ways
and see what works for you.

  • Purchased Windows Vista Home Basic for the Acer Aspire One yesterday

Given the simplistic nature of the Aspire One, Simplistic computers need simplistic operating systems without the bells and the whistles.
I dont think the upgrade installation went too well. Things were failing left and right after the upgrade so I said [bleep] it. i reran the setup program and chose clean install which forces the old installation to be moved to Windows.Old
Theres a youtube video you have to watch and download the WIFI drivers to be able to get online to get the rest of your drivers through Windows Update.
Whats funny is that my Programs and Applications disc from my old eMachines EL1200 work on any Emachines, Gateway or Acer computer , no matter how old it is , as long as its Windows XP or Vista.
