No audio on idvd burned disc- sound plays on TV fine but not on macbook DVD player

First time posting, so please excuse any naivete
Hi there, I'm having the opposite problem of many of the questions I've read on here- the audio on my burned disc won't play on my computer but is fine on my TV. I am running the latest version of idvd on a 2008 macbook. The music for the menu is a .m4a file (?) imported from itunes and the movie is an imported project from imovie. Both play fine in idvd preview and I have burned discs of this project before with no problems. This time I burned one disc through idvd, discovered the missing audio, deleted the encoded assets and re- encoded before saving the disk image and burning another dvd through disk utility. Both dvds are having this problem . I checked sound on my system preferences, it's on- though I can't find the "main audio" that was mentioned in another thread. Maybe I don't have enough space on my startup disk? I've been trashing some things to free up space, but I'm not sure where to check to see how much space I have.
I'm sending these dvds out as part of job applications so they need to be able to play right on whatever the reviewer uses (mac, pc, tv etc.)- is there a way to ensure it will work universally?

Ok. This is embarrassing. Just saw that the sound was turned down on my DVD player on my macbook though not on my computer. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the best.

Unfortunately that didn't do the trick. For the life of me I can't figure this one out. However, if I author it using iDVD (with the same media) it works? I'd make do with IDVD if I could get rid of the Apple logo in the lower right corner.

i just started to learn how to use my mac/iDVD and I burned two DVd's without any issues and they played fine on my regular tv/dvd player. I had a basic image/audio for the background.
I made another DVD with a video for the menu background and more data on it-but it still was under 4.7 Gb of storage..etc. But I went to play it on my tv/dvd player and it says "incorrect disc" and will not read it,yet it will play fine on my Mac.
Any reason why this won't work vs. my other two that burned fine??

Did you burn it as an Audio CD or a Data CD? You may have a home CD player that can play data discs while the car player cannot...

Have put several film up on web using FCP. Trying to make DVD of movies using DVD Studio Pro. The DVD plays on my iMac, but not my PC or my DVD player. Any suggestions?

Pop your disc into your Mac. On the disc there should be two folders, VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. If the VIDEO_TS folder is not there, replaced by something else, then you have indeed created a HD DVD. You need to completely start over.

Burned DVD's play on Phillips DVD Player, but not on computer DVD player

Hey Everyone,
I'm burning my reel in DVD STUDIO PRO 4 via MPEG-2 files exported from FCP to Compressor and then brought into DVD Studio Pro 4.
I select BUILD/FORMAT and go through the steps (insert blank DVD, etc.) and when the DVD is spit out of my macbook pro, it works perfectly fine on a DVD Player, but when I insert it back into my macbok, it spins for about 45 seconds and then spits itself right back out.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
NOTE: I have successfully burned other DVD's using TOAST so I don't think it's a hardware issue.

Created disc running on macs but not on any dvd player

Hey I am trying to make a short film that includes stills and video, I shot my footage in 108024p used after effects exported back out to FCP and then made a quicktime movie with the same settings (HDV 108024p) I used compressor to convert the footage to DVD SP-H.264 10.3Mbs.mov then made a project in DVD SP using HD DVD and NTSC settings, then tested my dvd with the simulator, worked, burned my copy and worked on my mac as well as my brothers mac though it does not work on any dvd player in the house (blueray players) does anyone have any suggestions, I included all the relevant information that I could think of. That's because you made an HD DVD, just as you said. You would need an HD DVD player.
DVD players can only play DVDs, Blu-ray players can play DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Only an HD DVD player (a dead format) will play an HD DVD.
You have to start your project over in SD mode.

I downloaded the latest free version of quicktime. I am trying to play a movie (mpeg-4) that was downloaded from youtube. It plays fine on my other pc, but I only get audio and no video when I open it on this pc. It shows up like static lines on a tv that has bad reception. Can anyone offer some suggestions please? Open your QuickTime control panel (either via the Control panels, or by going "Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences" in the Quicktime Player). In the Advanced tab, uncheck Enable Direct3D video acceleration:
... and click OK. Quit and restart the QuickTime Player prior to checking to see if the settings change has had any effect.

I used iDVD to create an IMG file
You created the video DVD, the IMG file, with iDVD and just burned it with Disk Utility. As Klaus1 pointed out Disk Utility can't create video DVDs.

DVD Plays on computer drives, but not on dvd players

iDVD 06 - This is a new problem, just happened two days ago. Previous dvd's burned with idvd 06 work just fine on old and new dvd players. I always test them after burning. However this new project will only play on computer dvd drives (mac or pc) but not on my dvd players. The menu screen shows up, but when the play button is pushed it never starts. Disk is clean, re-burned dvd, re-exported the video and re-did the entire dvd, same issue. I have not changed any settings in iDVD 06.
Yes, I even re-installed idvd 06, but then somehow I lost some of my old themes (which happened to be the ones I wanted to use) I did back up my previous copy of idvd 06 which has my old plain themes that I love to use in the package, so I do have those. But if I bring them into the newley re-installed idvd 06, all the features do not work. Such as being able to change the type size on that paticular menu.
I am using Verbatim 8X DVD-R's and have successfully used these just the other day on another project! And those work just fine on an old and new dvd player!

No rhyme or reason... but tried one more time after putting back my old copy of idvd 06 with my oldest themes in it, and I now have DVD's that will play on regular DVD players!
Now, if Apple could just get us a firmware update for the SONY DVD RW DW-U10A which came with my G-5 and then maybe we could all burn disks at the new 16X speed! Instead of limiting our possibilites.
Oh and yes, I did contact Sony about firmware updates. They informed me that this is really an OEM drive (whatever that is) and that Sony does not support it!

Install Flip4Mac which allows you to play wmv files.

Regular playlists vs smart playlist does not make a difference. What I noticed is that some videos create this behavior and some not. I created 2 videos and 2 music playlists, one with 2 songs and 2 videos (that I encoded myself with Handbrake). Another list with 2 videos and 2 songs, videos encoded with Handbrake, but that I noticed they triggered the behavior. The first playlist played fine, with no problems. The second one, created the problem. When I look at the video, it is the same type of video (bit rate, audio channels, etc...) I don't see why it would do that.
Later I will test: playing those videos in question and then selecting songs to see if they play.

It might be a huge coincidence but the drive was working fine before i installed lion?

Installing Lion would not cause the superdrive to stop working. Are you unsure as to whether or no a cd/dvd is inside? Something may be broken inside and you should consider bringing it in for service.
