No bootable device while installing Windows 7

hello there
i've read many of the posts on this issue but haven't gotten the answers that worked with my system (MacBook 13'' with SnowLeopard)
I'm trying to install Windows 7 from ORIGINAL DVD, but i can get as far as partitioning the HD and create a Boot Camp separate
partition.
After that when Boot Camp prompts to install Windows 7, with the DVD loaded, i follow instructions, machine restarts and i get to a black screen
with  the message "No bootable device found". None of the keyboard keys work, just the Power button.
Windows 7 is loaded onto an external HD via firewire and I'm booting off of there because my MacBook internal drive is not accepting any CDs or DVD (but that's another issue).
I suppose that i'm getting this message because Windows doesn't have any way to recognize the firewire port/peripheral...
Is there any way around it? Because i've read in other posts that it's possible to install Windows 7 from external drives...
I've restarted many times and rebooted into OSX (but holding option key) and retried via Bootcamp, but unsuccessfully.
At the  moment i have a Boot Camp partition with ZERO content in it and i can't seem to move forward.
Ideas?
Given i don't have a USB DVD/cdc drive, should i try  to do a disk image of my original Windows 7, and load it on to a USB HD and try that way?
i've never done a disk image with Windows, does it work the same way it does with mac, resulting with a .dmg file?
Thank you.

Hi,
indeed the missing FireWire driver could be the cause.
But the way you put Windows 7 on that external harddisk (HD) can also be the cause, since you would have to have a "Boot-Loader" on that ext. HD in order for it to be bootable.
Microsoft has released a rather 'short' instruction here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dd535816.aspx on how-to use an USB-Memory-Stick to install Windows 7 off it.
One a bit more detailed http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-install-windows-7vista-from-usb-drive-detailed -100-working-guide/
But you have to do all the necessary steps on a Windows-PC !

Stefan

You are getting this message because you are trying to create an iCloud account on a PC by signing with your Apple ID.  You can only sign into an existing account on a PC.  You first have to create iCloud account on an iOS device (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) running iOS 5 or higher, or on a Mac running OS X Lion (10.7.5) or higher.  After creating your account on one of these devices you will then be able to sign into the account using this ID on your PC.

Use the Flash Drive that came with your computer it has Snow Leopard installed on it. If you lost it or cannot find it then call Apple and they will replace it for you, I don't know how much they will charge.
BTW when installing MS Windows please follow the directions whether you are using Boot Camp or a vitualialization solution (Parallels, Fusion, etc.) had  you done this you would not have had any issues.

I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

  • Keyboard not responding while installing Windows XP sevice pack 2

    Hi,
I am new to macworld, Just got Macbook and try to use bootcamp to install windows xp, but keyboard did not respond hence got stuck at this point. Please help me. how to make keyboard working while installing windows xp using bootcamp. I know that for non-portable Mac USB mouse and keyboard can be used but whats need to be done for portable Mac like Macbook

I have been scouring the internet on my limited dial-up connection trying to find someone who had a definitive solution to this problem which I too have been stuck with.
What finally resolved this keyboard problem during that critical stage in the win xp setup was by:
    1. Going to System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse and check-marking "USE ALL F1, F2 ETC. KEYS AS STANDARD FUNCTION KEYS (when this option is selected, press the Fn key to use the special features printed on each key)" Before starting up Boot Camp,
    2. and Unplugging the Mighty Mouse from the keyboard while my mac was rebooting.
Switching out the apple keyboard for a standard USB keyboard did not work (perhaps in hindsight, i should have plugged it in first before boot camp rebooted and tried to install win xp;)
    Attempting time after time again did not solve the issue;
    Neither did doing all the software updates, firmware updates and such while borrowing an ethernet cable connection from my local library;
    I did not need to find another Win XP with SP2 nor did I need to find a USB keyboard;
Not even updating my Mac OS X from 10.5.2 to 10.5.5 or installing the new firmwares for the Apple aluminium keyboard was necessary it seems.
Just a simple checkmark to make the apple keyboard's F-keys primary and unplugging the Mouse from the keyboard before the WinXP install kicked in, allowed me to press Enter to proceed with the installation.
I also turned off the special functions of the mighty mouse like the center click and roll ball, but I felt obligated to post the solution to this problem - Do as you would be done by.
Hope this helps others who encounter this same problem, please confirm if I am correct. Good luck.

    Hello mmarti,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please ensure you are following the Boot Camp installation guide, as you should be selecting the partition named "BOOTCAMP" when you are at the Windows installer screen.  See page 6 of the following PDF:

  • No bootable device message while installing windows 7

I am trying to install windows 7 on my macbook via bootcamp but everytime I try I get this message on a black screen "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" I have to reeboot my macbook to get back to OS X. My question is: Is there a way to avoid this and install windows 7?

You might also want to post this in the Boot Camp forum. They'd be more likely to answer your question.

  • No bootable drive after installing windows successfully

I am trying to install Windows XP/Vista 32 Bit On Intel Mac Notebook through BootCamp. But after installing windows successfully, when it reboot?resatrt,It gives me error message that NO bootable Drive ,Press any to key to continue.......
I have Downloaded Windows XP/Vista 32 Bit ISO format and burned it on my DVD through Disk utility.I can install windows successfully but when it restarted then it gives that message. However I am able to locate windows hard drive after holding the Option Key and when I choose the windows HDD (BootCamp),It gives me same error.
I started the installation in osx using boot camp, and the windows was completely installed, even the boot camp driver for windows was installed and there are options to restart into either windows or mac osx.
But when I restart the machine and choose to go into windows, it just can not boot, saying no bootable device. If I insert the installation disc into the drive, then I restart and go to windows, it can boot successfully.
    Please Help.
    Much appriciated.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use BootCamp. There's a BootCamp Support Community where everybody uses BootCamp. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • "No bootable devices" screen after Windows 7 Boot Camp failure.

As a lifetime Windows user, I thought that it would not be such a bad idea to install Windows 7 via Boot Camp Assistant.  The process went smoothly until I reached the 3rd and final section of the procedure titled "Install Windows 7 or Later Version."  I adjusted the MacOS and Windows partitions and proceeded to the final reboot.  It is then where I was greeted with a Windows 7 screen tht stated something along the lines of "No bootable devices. Insert boot disc and try again."  I have tried the Boot Camp Assistant (Same exact steps I used initially) and have yet to defeat the dreaded No Bootable Devices screen.  I would really enjoy having Windows on my device so any help would be GREATLY appreciated.  Thank you!

Hmm, I had an 8 GB flash drive connected to the compter at all times.  When just using the "Install Windows 7 or later version" feature, shouldn't the flash drive be conncected throughout the duration of the procedure?  And I may not be using the correct vocabulary but when I was referring to "adjusting the partitions" I meant the section of the procedure where the user selects how much hard disk drive space is granted to each OS.  The response is much appreciated!

  • BOOTCAMP error while installing Windows 7

I am attempting to use BOOT CAMP to install Windows 7 and I keep getting this error message.
The USB drive connected to this Mac contains a bootable volume. In order to install Windows 7 from the DVD, the Boot Camp Assistant needs to disable this functionality. No information on the drive will be removed. Do you want to continue?   When I hit continue I get this "Your disk could not be partitioned" An error occurred while partitioning the disk.    HELP please.  I have a brand new MAC PRO bought in DEC.  and I am using a brand new USB port.

Please erase your USB Flash drive, and use Bootcamp Assistant to build a USB with the Windows ISO and BC drivers. Use a USB2 flash drive, not a USB3 one. It will not work with Windows.
