No 'Line input' option in sound prefs after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

I have connected guitars and mics using Garageband 3 without a problem, until upgrading from Tiger to Leopard 10.5.8.
I'm not getting sound from the guitar apart from feedback when I plug it in to the audio line-in port on my iMac G5.
I have read many of the questions and comments in the relevant forums all pointing to selecting the line-in option of the input tab in the sound preferences window.
I only have the 'internal mic' appearing in that window now.
I've checked that the cables are working correctly on a guitar amp and are fine.
So not sure why I don't get the 'Line-in' option anymore.
Are there any patches/updates to cure this problem, or would updating to Garageband 9 cure the problem?
Thanks,
Mick

Yes, checked the 'Audio MIDI Setup' utility and can select Line-in from there.
All working fine now!
Thanks very much for your help.

  • ITunes Not Recognizing my iPod Touch after Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

After upgrading from Tiger (10.4.x) to Leopard (10.5.0=>10.5.6), my iPod Touch is no longer recognized by iTunes 8.0.2. The iPod Touch no longer appears in iTunes' "source list" (left side pane in iTunes' GUI).
Immediately prior to that upgrade, my iPod Touch was working great with Tiger (10.4.x). iTunes 8.0.2 recognized it (listed it in sources) and always synchronized with it successfully.''
My iPod Touch is also not shown in the Finder. However, it does show up as recognized in iPhoto.
Any ideas on how to get the iPod recognized again in iTunes under Leopard?

Thanks to a posting by Jim in a different Apple Discussions (forum), my problem is now resolved. Read on for the details.
iPods & Finder. Some other postings incorrectly lead me to believe that the iPod would show up in the "Finder". Jim's posting set me straight on this.
iTunes Not Recognizing iPod Touch. Prior to Jim's posting, I had already read the article that Jim referenced (to remove and reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service per article "http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747").
Prior to Jim's posting, I had also read other articles in various "Apple Discussions" (forums) that suggested this recognition problem could be resolved by uninstalling/re-installing iTunes 8.0.2. Some implied that you could just re-install iTunes 8.0.2 right over the currently installed one without bothering to uninstall it.
Based on those postings, I "gambled" last night and simply downloaded and re-installed iTunes 8.0.2 (without uninstalling it first). I noticed during the installation that the Apple Mobile Device agent was also re-installed. Well, my gamble paid off! After the installation (and a reboot?), iTunes onces again RECOGNIZED my iPod Touch.

  • Did you need to reinstall FCS after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard?

Need to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard mid FCP/Motion3 project and without FCS2 discs handy...I can't access them til after the project deadline.
I've read in a KB article that 'most' of the apps are ok after the upgrade-what's your experience?

Don't even think about it unless
#1 You MUST have a new OS to complete the project (i.e. new plug-in only works in 10.5)
    AND
#2 You'll have a lot of extra time on your hands to reinstall everything when FCS doesn't quite work the way you need it to.
Of course you're familiar with the recommendation to clone your system before ANY upgrade.

  • Cannot access mail after upgrading from tiger to leopard

When I accessed Mail from applications after installing leopard I received the following message "You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of MacOSX" any advice please?

    Hello Hannah:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I think we need a bit more information.
What method did you use to upgrade?

  • Can't undo a Huge Mouse Pointer after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard.

I did an upgrade from Leopard to Tiger.
When I was on Tiger, I had a setting for a huge mouse pointer. I upgraded to Leopard. No matter how many times I reset the pointer to small, when restarting it goes back to huge.
    How can I fix this?

    gaccawi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
No matter how many times I reset the pointer to small, when restarting it goes back to huge.
That statement indicates to me that you have made this attempt using System Preferences>Universal Access>Mouse>For difficulties seeing the mouse...Normal.
If that is the true, have you previously installed any third party pointer software?
    ;~)

  • Airport Extreme not working properly after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

I've been using the Airport on a home network to share internet between a Mac & PC via ethernet. I don't use wireless. My internet provider is comcast via cable modem. During the Leopard install the Airport asked for a firmware update to 7.3.2. So I installed the update during the transition. I lost internet connection. I resolved this by calling comcast- who reset my modem. This got the Mac connected again but not the PC. When I attempt to share the connection via the Airport utility, I loose internet again.
    The error message is:
Your Apple wireless device does not have a valid IP address. Make sure your Apple wireless device is connected to your broadband modem or local network, verify your settings, and try again. If you still can't connect, contact your internet provider
What is a valid IP address? How can I determine what it is?
Also, I cannot see the PC on the network.
I've attempted going back to the previous firmware (7.3.1) but it didn't solve the problem
I'm connected to the internet now by taking the airport out of the loop and going directly into the Mac from the Modem.
    Thanks Steve

  • Sent Mail folder empty after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

    Hi,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
    Writing for a friend:
This is for their PowerPC G5. Running OS 10.5. Mail - version 3.
When they upgraded from Tiger to Leopard (not an Erase and Install), their Sent Mail folder in Mail was empty of any sent mail.
However, I can see they have sent mail in their Home/Library/Mail folder.
How to I get Sent Mail in Mail to see this?
(Drag and drop does not seem to work. I tried to drag and drop one saved mail from the Home Library/Mail folder into the Sent Mail folder in Mail and it didn't take).
They have only one email account.
    Thank you,
    - Ross

    Lonnie, thanks
Mailbox behaviors set up exactly as you describe, "Store sent messages on server" is checked and "Delete" set "Never".
    Rebuild doesn't really help.
I use Kerio 6.0.6 mail server, with IMAP (143) for incoming and SMTP (25) for sending.
And it works already like four or five years without problems.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks a lot.
    Leo.

  • Missing accounts after upgrade from Tiger to Leopard

I upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6 today and in Mail, all but one of my accounts and their associated inboxes are missing. I've installed the recent Mail fix file (10.5.6). All my stored old e-mails are there. I can't see any of my other e-mail addresses or any e-mails that are in them.
I have a .mac account with 2 additional .mac mail addresses and also 3 POP accounts. In the Inbox, the only e-mail that shows up is that for my main .mac account. I've deleted the mail.plist file and re-imported the mailboxes and they still don't show up.
    Can anyone help?

By going to my Mail folder in my Library folder (~/Library/Mail) and deleting all files except any folders and then opening Mail and re-importing, everything comes up properly.

  • Postfix doesn't send mail after upgrade from tiger to leopard

Here is what's in my /var/log/mail.log:
Dec 31 08:26:01 weegee postfix/master[257]: master exit time has arrived
    Dec 31 08:26:01 weegee postfix/master[258]: daemon started -- version 2.4.3, co\
    nfiguration /etc/postfix
Repeated lots of times. I already changed my main.cf to use _postfix and _postdrop.
    Thanks for the help.

I figured this out myself. The system upgrade didn't upgrade /etc/postfix/master.cf for some reason. Instead it left a new default in /etc/postfix/master.cf.system_default. Copying that over master.cf and reloading postfix did the trick.

  • Admin group has wrong gid after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

Under Tiger I unfortunately made by login as admin. This worked OK under tiger, but created confusion under Leopard. The final result is that the admin group has the gid of 501 and the gid of 80 has an (unknown) name. Repairing permissions under Leopard caused all of Apples applications and system type folder and files to have the group 80(unknown). I can see from discussion forums and other native Leopard machines that gid 80 is supposed to be named admin and is for, well, Admins.
I created a new user, gave him administrative rights and migrated the old "admin" user's files, folders, etc. to the new user and removed the admin user through the Accounts GUI. That new user and all other administrative users are members of group 501(admin), but NOT of 80(unknown).
How can I remove the current admin group (501), give the admin group name to 80 and have the administrative users join group 80?

  • I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. After a few weeks the HDD failed. New Leopard install reports: "insufficient memory". I need Tiger install disks so I can install

I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.
After a few weeks the HDD failed. I bought a new disk, installed it and trued to install Leopard, but theĀ  install fails reporting "insufficient memory".
I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
You need much more RAM than that.

  • A different way to deal with "unknown" user after upgrade from Tiger.

It's a known issue that doing upgrade and install or archive and install from Tiger to Leopard, produces a lot of folders with "unknown" group in their "get info" panel. This has to do with a different group structure in Tiger and Leopard.
In Tiger, every user has their own private group with the same name as the username. That group is set to be user's primary group.
In leopard, every new user with an account is a member of the group staff (gid=20) which is not present in Tiger. Leopard doesn't fully understand Tiger's private group structure, hence the "unknown" group. This causes various problems such as Finder crashes when trying to change the permissions and ownership in the get info window.
Apple's proposed way of dealing with this is described [here|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307128].
However, this method doesn't change the existing group structure and doesn't resolve all the problems.
I'd like to suggest a different way of dealing with it.
    1. create a new admin user (if you don't have one already), log out of your primary account and log into the new one.
    2. enter the following in terminal:
    *sudo dscl . delete /users/"username"*
where username is the short name of the user on the main account (not the one you are currently logged into).
    This will delete that user.
    3. Log out/in.
    4. go to system preferences->accounts and create a new user with the name and short name exactly as the one you've deleted in step 2.
You'll be get a popup saying that a home directory by this name already exists and asking if you want to use it. Say "Yes".
That's it. Your main user will be recreated using the native group structure of Leopard with gid=20(staff). Permissions on your home directory will be reset with correct group and ownership.
I tested the process on my powerbook after an upgrade and install from Tiger to leopard and it worked without a hitch.
I like this method better than Apple's because it completely gets rid of Tiger's group structure which was creating all the confusion. The only downside as far as I can see is that you might have to manually change the group ownership on some files belonging to the main user that sit outside your home directory.
I would appreciate any comments on this.

hmm, I confess, I did this before installing 10.5.2 so i can't say for sure. However, I've dealt with a few people (see e.g. this [thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7012957]) who are running 10.5.2 and still have this issue. I don't know what if anything 10.5.2 did about this but I'm quite sure that it didn't change the group structure inherited from Tiger.

  • Can't find mails anymore after update from Tiger to Leopard

I've just updated my IMac from Tiger to Leopard (OSX 10.5.6).
After opening the Mail program I just see the menu bar (no window for the postbox).
When I open the postbox via the menu bar, the box is just empty. Are my mails gone? Where can I find or restore them?
    Thanks for help,
    Vanillia

Let's force an overall reindexing via the removal of the Envelope Index. Note the special instructions when forcing the reindexing of IMAP or Exchange accounts in the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/3.0/en/14019.html
This will force the reindexing of all the POP mailboxes and all On My Mac mailboxes. With regard to any IMAP accounts if you have any, the practical result of this action of removing the account folder, is that with the IMAP account still set up in the Preferences, Mail will connect to the IMAP server and create a new account folder, and while doing so will index the messages in the mailbox folders of the IMAP accounts on the server.
    Keep me posted.

  • Can't play long voice memo after upgrading from Tiger OS to Snow Leopard OS

I have a voice memo that's 1.5 hrs long saved on my computer that I used to be able to play in iTunes & Quicktime, but ever since I upgraded from Tiger OS to Snow Leopard OS, the file will not play anymore. I tried installing quicktime 7 from the snow leopard optional installs but the file still didn't play. I also installed the VLC player which opened the file, but only played 7 minutes of it. When I try to open the file in quicktime it says that it can't play the file and that it is not a movie file, but my file is saved as a ".mov" file. Does anyone know how I can get the file to play again?

  • Newly installed leopard-HOW TO GET LINE IN OPTION IN SOUND PREFS?

    Hi,
Have just installed leopard and garageband 09 onto my PwrBk15" 1.33ghz and
usually, on panther and tiger, when i wanted to put a minidisc thru to record into garageband i had to go to system prefs>sound
and change the audio to line in input option and now there is no option there - just 'built in mic'
and in gb prefs there is 'built in' option and 'system settings' which doesn't really do anything. Connection of the minijack and playing the minidisc in2 it is not getting into the computer at all -
not even in the sound prefs rec volume bars...just the sound coming thru the built in mic.
I opened an old GB and it's the same so i guess it's a leopard thing not a garageband thing essentially.
Any offers for solutions or info? is this usual for leopard?
    Thanks

    Found answer trawling thru threads!
    For anyone interested -
go to Applications>Utilities>Audio Midi Set up>change the input source there to line in - if the option drop down table has it!
In GB prefs change input to 'system settings'.
