No Signal to External Monitor

I use KDE and have a HP ProBook 6560b with a dock/port replicator.  My problem is that signal to my external monitor doesn't automatically work on login rather it be via VGA or DVI (currently hooked up over DVI).  I tinkered around with it and got it to work sometimes but not consistently.
Edit:  This also seems to happen in Gnome using Gnome's display config tool.
That aside, my even bigger issue is when I click KRandRTray down in the system tray and change the display settings to what I want, my external monitor goes to sleep and says "no signal."  The settings I want are for my laptop's attached LCD panel (LVDS1) to be "Disabled" (since I keep my laptop lid closed in the dock) and I want my externally attached monitor (HDMI2) to be set to 1680x1050 (Auto).  The even stranger part of this is I can eventually get this to work if I start it dual monitor, pick my secondary external monitor (HDMI2) and set it's resolution to 1680x1050 (Auto), set primary display to HDMI2, hit apply then go back in and set LVDS1 to "Disabled" and hit apply again.
To add to this, if at any point in time the external monitor goes to "no signal" mode and the settings restore after the countdown, the external monitor will never show signal until I drop out to a console and killall X and it restarts KDM, etc.
I don't have any Xorg.conf (or config files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d) that relates to video settings.
The following is my graphics card that is integrated into my Core i5:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
Also, the xf86-video-intel version:
xf86-video-intel 2.15.0-2
This is the entire Xorg.0.log file up to the no signal situation on the external monitor:

First step would be to create the necessary entries (easier to make a complete xorg.conf versus xorg.conf.d/##-whatever.conf).
All Desktop Environments / Window Managers rely on X.  Man pages are helpful, possibly some headaches ahead as I fought a dual-monitor display this way.
I currently run a xrandr script to switch displays on my hp pavilion: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xrandr#Scripts

i did what you said and tried with other resolution/refresh rate combinations, also with anoter external monitor (and vga cable) but its still the same: monitor is detected but there's no signal.
Now I will try to chek if the adapter works on other pc and monitor.

  • No Signal on External Monitor or Projector

    I have a 2006 MacBookPro 2,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz.
When I connect an external display or projector, the system recognizes that I've connected to an external monitor, System Profiler correctly identifies it, and Spaces doubles to show the other screen. However, the external display shows no image. I thought perhaps it was a problem with the monitor, until I had the same issue with a projector in another location.
    Ideas?

No real ideas, and I am not on Snow Leopard.
    SMC and PRAM reset?
What happens in Display Preferences if you try to rearrange the relative display positions or location of the menu bar (I'll assume 10.6 is similar to 10.5 in this)?

  • Mac powerbook g4 15" Auminum, on startup has a black screen and no signal to external monitor

    Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz 15" Aluminum
After watching a dvd, I turned the laptop off and closed the lid before the screen was completely dark. I also forgot to take the dvd out. The next day I get a start up chime and a black screen. Will not work with external monitor. Will not let me do pram reset as I couldn't see the picture anyway. Hard drive appears to be fine. I tried swapping the two ram modules. Took the lower one out and still no results. My main question is, before I just geek out and put a new logic board in, what are the possible loose connection  (cables) causes?

This issue is not unfamiliar among PowerPC G4 users, in desktop or portable models.
The cause may vary and so when looking through incidents of a similar nature, try to
be patient and get past duplicate-sounding experiences as referenced by the sources.
There are more than a few in this search thread that sound like your situation:
    https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=powerbook+g4+black+screen+on+startup
Depending on the PowerBook model, some have clock battery/capacitor on logic board
that once it fails, there can be startup issues as a result... So that's one to check. And
then there are the connections that may have come loose on the logic board, over years
of handling and small movement, these could finally have failed to contact finally. Or the
DC-in Board may have chosen to fail, so power may be unable to get past a circuit.
Troubleshooting based on a few symptoms can be... troublesome, tedious; or costly.
The iFixit.com guides have sections where people asked questions, such as:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/131619/PowerBook+g4+has+startup+chime+no+ima ge
The keyboard shortcuts to attempt to force a computer to start may be of no avail if
the hardware has defects, or if wires have come off their necessary junctions inside.
If you have time and some money, companies who specialize in repairing Apple
portable computers could restore its function & warranty their work. wegenermedia
is worth contacting if the computer is one you want to keep around while. They did
a repair for me on one of my Apple portables, and I'd probably go that route again.
So, anyway, if the unit uses a clock or PRAM battery, it may need replacement.
Or in another direction, issue could be a power related circuit failure; or worse.
There are graphic display components that fail at a point where an external &
internal display both won't light up. These are mapped out in iFixit guides or in
others online, depending on the model G4 PowerBook they show.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Mac not sending signal to external monitor

Hi, I have a 2010 Macbook pro and I'm trying to use my acer monitor as an external for additional desktop space. I've done it before (about a year ago) and it worked perfectly fine, but for some reason when I plug in the cable (it's a DVI) it just lights up my monitor which says no signal, and the mac screen turns blue (as if it were going to readjust the screen for another monitor), but then it just goes back to the normal desktop. I can't move the mouse off screen and the monitor displays nothing. Any ideas?

Sorry I couldn't figure out how to edit the above, but I forgot to mention that after unplugging and plugging it in several times I actually got the monitor to work and display things and I dragged some stuff over to it, but there was a dialogue box about displays I couldn't close and when i clicked "detect monitors" it ended up shutting it down again and I haven't seen it work since.

HI i have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011). some days ago i connected it to my LG plasma 60" with HDMI. i used the DVI --> HDMI converter from apple. the it worked fine and i could se films om the tv. but now nothing happens when i connect the mac. help??

    Hello,
I had this problem with y Macbook Air and an Asus LED monitor 21.5". The very first time I tried the two together, it worked perfectly. The second time it didn't work and I tried different things to make that "No HDMI signal" go away.
The only thing that worked for me was connecting both devices OFF, once connected I turned the monitor ON first and then started my Macbook Air.
I really hope this helps some of you.
    Good luck

  • MBP 15" 2007 with internal monitor off, main monitor signal on external monitor

My MBP 15" 2.2 2007 2 MB RAM NVIDIA GeForce 8600 internal monitor has no video after startup.  If I connect my Apple Cinema Display to it, the video of the main monitor is on it, and the internal screen stays off.  If I hit the "Detect displays" switch, nothing happens.  I have tried the following:  reset PRAM and NVRAM, reset SMC, repair permissions using Mac OS X Lion Disk Utilities, and Onyx software as well.  I have also formatted the MBP and reinstalled MAc OS, and the problem persists.  Can anybody help?  Many thanks in advance

  • How do i run an external monitor with my macbook and change settings so that when i close the lid the signal to the monitor is not lost and i can continue using the mac with a mouse and a wireless keyboard?

How do i run an external monitor with my macbook and change settings so that when i close the lid the signal to the monitor is not lost and i can continue using the mac with a mouse and a wireless keyboard?

No, nothing will prevent the computer from going to sleep when you close its display except third-party hacks that are designed to do exactly that. I strongly advise against using any of those, as they may interfere with successful entry into clamshell mode (and they carry other downside risks as well). Just wait until the computer is asleep (with its sleep light pulsing), then press any key on the keyboard. It sounds as though your setup is working as it's designed to do.

  • External monitor loses signal to macbook pro through DVI cable and Mini DisplayPort Adapter

    Hello,
So I had my external monitor connected to my MBP with a DVI cable and a Mini DisplayPort Adapter, for a while already. But sometimes, the monitor would lose signal from the laptop and gives me a white noise screen. Now, the monitor can't receive signal at all, even after I got a new Mini Displayport Adapter. When the monitor and the MBP is connected by the cable and the adapter, the monitor would say "no signal" and the MBP screen would flicker (I think it's trying to connect to the monitor, but can't). The new Mini Display Port Adapter also makes the screen flicker, so I'm not sure if it's the problem is at the adapter or the DVI cable. I'm pretty sure it's not the monitor.
What do you think? Have you ever have a screen flickering problem when your MBP is connected to an external monitor?

I have had the same problem.  By following your suggestions I got to arrangements.  I could not send them off to the side.  When I hit the mirro disply key everyting worked.  I got it solved by clicking in arrangements and setting displays to mirror display.
I am still have a problem of no sound coming through my tv.

  • How do I get a video signal to an external monitor via the mini-display port on my Mac Book Air?

I can't get a video signal out through my mini-display port on my Mac Book Air (version 1).  Thus I can't feed BBC iPlayer to an external monitor.  There is some connectivity - the MAC wallpaper is broadcast, the mouse pointer is visible and sound is transferred.  Is it likely to be a cable connection problem (though the cable works with a Windows operating laptop)?

First, what you said is contradictory. You say "can't get a video signal", then say"the Mac wallpaper is broadcast, the mouse pointer is visible". "No video signal" means an absolutely black, blank screen. It sounds like you have plenty of signal.
I am supposing what you are seeing is actually a blank desktop, which is to be expected if your settings are such that you are extending the desktop, instead of mirroring it.
Within the preference panes is a setting that allows you to change this. Open System Preferences, click Displays, and then click Arrangement. You will see that you are extending the desktop. Change that setting.

  • External Monitor no signal

    Hi all,
I have a brand new 24 inch iMac and I love it! However, I am having a terrible time trying to set up an external monitor. I have a LaCie 19 inch monitor, which is Mac compatible. I have the mini-DVI adapter, which I have connected to the monitor's DVI-D cable. The iMac recognizes the external monitor, but the monitor keeps saying 'No Signal'. I have tried different resolutions on the LaCie, and tried mirroring the desktop, but no luck getting anything on the external monitor.
As far as I can tell, the iMac thinks everything is working - the LaCie shows up in System Preferences > Displays, and I can change the resolution of the LaCie using the Display Preferences from the iMac, but there's no image on the LaCie! The LaCie is plugged in, it has power, but no signal. Am I missing something obvious about setting up an external monitor on the iMac? Does anyone have any suggestions for getting a signal on the external monitor? Thanks.

    Hi Donna Jones1,
Thanks for the welcome, and for your suggestions. Those are certainly the obvious steps, and they OUGHT to work. But unfortunately, there's still no signal on the external monitor. I can detect the second display, and gather the info on it, set the rez, turn off Mirror, etc., but there's no picture. The monitor definitely works, as I've just had it connected to a PC laptop. It is plugged in. I have the mini-DVI adapter plugged into the iMac, and the monitor's cable plugged into the mini-DVI adapter. Heck, I even tried plugging the monitor cable into both the DVI-I and DVI-D inputs on the back of the monitor. No luck. I would normally suspect a faulty cable or connection, except that the iMac recognizes the external monitor and it shows up in 'About this Mac'. I'm completely baffled!

I could be *very* wrong but did not know you could output from HDMI into displayport consistently with no issues.
Try a mDP to DP cable like this (the mDP end will go directly into the thunderbolt port of your laptop)

  • External monitor no signal until log-on screen

    Hi
After my 2012 Macbook Pro's LCD became damaged, I had to connect an external monitor via HDMI.
The problem is there is no display signal before the Mac/Win7 login screen. My guess is the MBP sends signal to the native LCD and only after Mac/Win7 boots up it loads up drivers and recognizes the external HDMI monitor.
This essentially prevents me from re-installing Win7 because I can't see anything during the reboot and install process.
I connected to many monitors and HDMI TVs in the store and results are the same. I'm on 10.8.5
    Thanks

    Yes.
Apple restricts access to all system settings for Base system boot.
    Not really.
They also restrict installing Windows from the Built In DVD drive on Mac computer that come with built in DVD drive. But yet allow the system to boot to an OS X installer on a USB thumb drive or externally connected DVD drive even when the system has a built in DVD drive.
    Apple's way or no way.

Then, is this an issue people put up with?
I searched online and PC users have similar issue. But they can go into BIOS and set the display output to 'external'.
I hoped Macs were more sophisticated
