No sound in Yosemite

Hey guys,
Just updated to Yosemite a couple days ago. For some reason, every time I turn on the computer, or put in/pull out headphones, I have to set the default for audio back to "Internal Speakers" to get any type of sound from the computer.
The default it keeps going to is either "Soundflower (2ch)" or "Soundflower (64ch)." I can't seem to get this to re-default to just the internal speakers, and leave Soundflower's module alone. I use Audacity to work with audio files, so deleting Soundflower is not an option. Is this a bug? Anyone know a way around it?
Thanks in advance!
Jonathan

Wish I could help but I do not use Audacity. I have been having the same issue : my audio kept on disappearing every time I turned computer on since updating to Yosemite. It affected not only audio in Safari but also iTunes music, Youtube, videos, etc. Seems that it was resetting to something called Soundflower 2Ch or 64ch (found under System Preferences/Sound) instead of internal speakers or Headset. I could change it back to Internal speakers but every time I restarted computer it would go back to Soundflower setting and I would loose audio again. In my case turns out SoundFlower was installed with program called Splashtop Streamer/Personal and is poorly designed as it tries to take over audio like that every time computer turned on again! Maybe you could contact them (Splashtop) to see if they have a fix.
Not using Audacity, the way I got rid of it was:
On the Desktop navigate to Go to Folder under Go menu and type in /System/Library/Extensions
Delete the entry called Soundflower.kext and reboot the computer.
Check the System Preferences/Sound and it should be gone from your list.
Your audio should now be back to normal.

  • Facetime suppress other app's, video's sound in Yosemite

I just upgrade my OS to Yosemite from Mountain Lion. Everything looks fine but i encounter this problem, when I use facetime it reduces the other sounds running in background (like youtube video). I see similar sort of thing with Mavericks. Is there anyway I can fix this? I do watch videos with facetime on a lot of times.
    Thanks in advance,
    -Sid

QuickTime Player to my knowledge does not have the capacity to capture from external video inputs, nor does any Mac have composite nor S-video inputs built in. You'll need a video capture device and appropriate software, perhaps iMovie if the video capture device doesn't come with software, to capture from such a video source.
    Regards.

  • No startup sound on Yosemite

After installing Yosemite, and sorting out varios issues, I still don't get a startup sound?

    Hey there Rolf,
Resetting your PRAM should return your startup chime on the computer. This article will walk you through doing that on Mac OS X Yosemite:
OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
Important:    To print these instructions, click the Share button  in the Help window, then choose Print.
Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Option, Command (⌘), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on your Mac.
Immediately press and hold the Option-Command-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Continue holding the keys down until your Mac restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting your computer’s PRAM, you may need to update your speaker volume, display resolution, and startup disk preferences. For more information about PRAM, see the Apple Support article About NVRAM and PRAM.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • Can't play / record sound on Yosemite with external Firewire audio interface

I've got a Focusrite Saffire PRO 24 Firewire audio device. It worked perfectly until I upgraded to Yosemite. Even upgrading the driver to the last version (which suports Yosemite) I can't play sound in any way. Garageband crashes when I try to play my projects. Youtube videos on a browser stay paused on 00:00...
Saffire pro 24 is detected. I can select it on System preferences or garageband settings. On Saffire Mix Control 3.5 I can see how audio inputs are ok, the input signal is received and the output is ok. According to Saffire Mix Control everything's fine, but I can't play audio nor record sound.
If I switch to internal audio device everything works perfectly.
I did some research and every time I try to play sound these errors are shown on the Console.

It looks like there's some problem with Airplay? I didn't even know what Airplay was until now but after looking for some information I don't understand what has Airplay to do with playing sound over firewire.
I tried to disable Airplay on System Preferences > Display. I removed com.apple.airplay.plist from Library/Preferences but the results are the same
Please a need help with this. It's getting really frustrating. I'm trying to get help from Focusrite support as well.

In case another poor man like me run into this issue, here's how I solved it:
First of all, I removed Saffire Mix Control entirely following this guide:
    http://global.focusrite.com/answerbase/how-do-i-remove-saffire-mixcontrol-from-m y-mac
In addition to that I did this:
    1. Mac HD > Library > Preferences > Audio and in there please delete the two preference files
    2. Finder > Go > Hold down the "Alt" key and click on the library folder. In there please trash the file "com.apple.audiomidisetup.plist" (in case it exists)
Then I emptied the trash, restarted system and reinstalled Saffire Mix Control 3.5
    Problem solved.

  • Unable to turn down sound in Yosemite

    To all,
I have a problem that I haven't seen until I upgraded to Yosemite.  The situation is, Im listening to Pandora or iTunes, and Im unable to turn down the sound from the speaker icon in the menu bar.  No matter where I put the speaker, it will not decrease or increase the volume, however if I go into System Preferences and then sound, I can adjust the sound from there, or individually in applications like the ones previously mentioned.  Thanks for the help!
    Todd

If you have the ambient light sensor on and are under bright lights, that could be the outcome. You can turn off the ambient sensor to see if that is the issue. The check box for this is right below the slider you referenced.

  • No sound MPB Yosemite

    Greetings!
    Specs:
    13" Early 2011 MPB
    Yosemite 10.10.2
I installed 8gb ram, a solid state HD, and did a fresh install of Yosemite to go along with the fresh hard drive, just to have a clean start. Lost internal speakers as an option for output in the sound settings. Headphones work, streaming to Apple TV works. Tried PRAM reset as well as another OS install, no luck. Tried restore from time machine backup as well, no change to sound. Everything else works great - just no option for internal speakers.
Talked with my wife, who uses the computer more then I do, and she said the sound was like that for a couple weeks, where if you use the volume up or down button on the keyboard it displays the speaker icon on screen, but a circle with a line through it under the speaker, like a no smoking sign. So, the internal speakers had been lost before doing the hardware upgrades, and I hadn't realized. I'm guessing an OS update messed it up....
I've done some reading, and it sounds like if you move/delete the "HAL" folder in library/audio/plugins that the OS should re generate the folder, and solve the problem. I don't have a "HAL" folder, and I also am unable to change anything in the library folder. One user, and full admin rights on that user, etc. No luck.
Advice? Other ways to work on the issue?
(In other news, 8gb of ram and an SSD REALLY woke up the machine!)
    Thanks all!
    Chris

Great thought, I should have mentioned that I tried just that very thing, in and out many times and ways. No luck.
Any way to verify it's hardware based? Some sort of self diagnostic?
Seems like if the switch was stuck the option for headphones would stay as an option in the output selection, which it does not. When you unplug headphones, only "digital out" appears as an option for output.

Relaunch the application and test. If there's no change, quit again and put the item you moved back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. • Need better sound for Yosemite FaceTime to iPhone calls???

Yosomite has this great new feature where my iPhone6 calls come through to my iMac when I'm working.  It works great except the people I'm talking to say it sounds like I'm on the toilet or in a tunnel, not the most professional impression id like to make.
Im confused by the sound issue because I've made a 10min screen recording for a retouching tutorial and the sound was more than good enough.
Has anyone else got this problem and has anyone found a solution???

I recently had problems with sound quality using the FaceTime and my iPhone Continuity.  On the receiving end I was told my voice sounded like I was in a tunnel and somewhat "slowed down."  On my end the person sounded like a chipmunk.  Called Apple Care and worked through the issue with the support folks and discovered it was in the modem.  Since Continuity is using Wifi it can apparently get goofy in the modem operation.  Simply turned off Wifi on the iPhone and Mac and reset the modem (turned it off, waited a few seconds and powered back up.)  Once everything was reconnected the sound quality was perfect again.

  • My computer is completely frozen, after two days of installing yosemite

Two days ago I did the Yosemite update. I did the vault security encryption because it was suggested. After it, the login was taking longer than before, but the laptop was working fine. Then I shut down the computer from the initial page after it was asleep, and then I took it with me. When I turned it back on, all normal, the pages I was reading were there, and after a couple of hours of using it, it began to freeze, doing nothing but the horrible rainbow circle. I had to force quite. It restarted normally, but once I opened an application it just stayed loading there. Again forced shut. The same thing. The following time it just didn't even go into the desktop, just a blury background and the horrible rainbow. Nothing else happened. Sounds like Yosemite just screwed my computer, and now I have to wait until Monday for a technician. Does someone have a clue of what could've happened?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Sound Issues: Synching leads to poor quality

So I have a 5 minute animation that has narration to explain what is going on. First I ran into synching problems when I had the sound as an external file. Today I found a tutorial that had me import the mp3 file into the library, put it on its own layer and put the synch setting in properties to "stream". Now when I play the movie in flash the audio still sounds normal but when I test or publish the movie the sound quality goes so far down it's intolerable. She sounds like Yosemite Sam with all the Suffering Suckatash. Please help me. This is pretty urgent, my graduation next week pretty much depends on this project.

Ok, figured this out on me own. So, if anyone comes across this and has the same problem, I changed the publish settings of my flash document. The audio stream bit rate wasn't matching my audio file by default. And since I had it as an external file before I wasnt aware of this difference.

Any ideas if there is a work around for this?

    Hi,
Please try this first to enable Speakers in Playback devices as follows:
    1. Right click speaker icon (bottom right hand corner)
    2. Select Playback devices
    3. Right click HDMI sound
    4. Enable it
    5. Click Apply/Ok
