Noise on wake up, Hel...

A couple of days ago I noticed the right speaker on my Macbook started to make a "swoosh" sound (even with the volume turned completely down). This happens after I have waked up the Macbook from sleep and entered by login password... the "swoosh" noise only lasts for about 1 or 2 seconds then it's gone until the next time I wake up my Macbook.
Has anyone had similar experience? Any suggestions on what I should do? Thank you very much for any assistance you can provide.

That sounds like a harmonic vibration that can sometimes happen if you have RF nearby that is oscilating at the same frequency. TVs can sometimes pick up CB radios and retransmit them over their speakers even when the TV is off!
Unless other symptoms are there, I wouldn't worry about it. I would though always keep a backup of my data at all times as my FAQ states:

  • MacBook optical drive has started making noises at wake and restart

This MacBook is about 5 months old and the optical drive has just started making noises at wake from sleep, or at restart. There is no disc loaded in the drive, but the noise is as though a disc has been inserted in the drive and it is attempting to read it. This goes on for about 5 to 10 seconds, then stops.
The optical drive seems to work fine, reads CDs and DVDs no problem. This isn't a glaring issue, I'm just trying to determine if it is the precursor to a mechanical problem, or is possibly some sort of software glitch. Thanks for help if this rings a bell with anyone.

I posted this to a different thread earlier today. I will add that most of the experience I've had with this issue is in Tiger or Leopard. I don't think I've seen it yet with Snow Leopard. My instincts tell me it is more of a hardware issue than a software/OS issue. (Just my $0.02.)
I have seen this many times. (I support 100+ Mac Laptops, most are 13" MacBooks.)
Just to clarify, MacBook optical drives do normally make some quiet noises when waking from sleep.
When there is a CD or DVD in the drive, there are some soft sounds, and then you hear the disc spin up. When there is not a disc in the drive you hear a different sound. I assume it is relating to checking for a disc in the drive. To me, it sounds exactly the same as the quiet sounds you hear right before the "Good Chime" when you power up.
BUT, sometimes MacBooks make a much louder noise, that is similar the sound you hear when you insert or eject a CD or DVD, only sort of "doubled". Usually you hear it when waking from sleep, but I have also experienced it happen intermittently when the MacBook is turned on, under normal use, or not being used (but not sleeping or waking from sleep).
In the past, I have sometime cured it with a reset of the SMC and PRAM. This has not always worked. I have also seen it disappear after inserting a disc into the drive. Most of the time, the sound has returned some time later. I have called Apple on this issue several times, and sent the MacBook in for repair. My memory is that they have replaced the optical drive under AppleCare.
I will add that I have recently seen this Knowledge Base Article (below), with instructions for "resetting" the optical drive on a MacBook Pro, but it did work for me on a MacBook 13". Insert a disc halfway, take it back out, then put it in all the way.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2839
Past experience tells me not to be surprised if the noise resurfaces. My advice is call Apple if you have AppleCare, or if the MacBook is under one year old.
    Good Luck.

  • SuperDrive makes noises on wake-up & restart after replacement

I had problems with my Super-drive (won't write DVD) on MacBookPro4,1 (early 2008, MBP41.00C1.B03) and got it replaced from an Apple-Care center. But now it is making noises on restart & Wake-up.
I read about a similar issue with Late 2008,2009 Editions of Macbook Pro. I also know that a firmware update is out that addresses this issue on late 2008,2009 MacBook Pros. I guess that my replaced DVD drive (HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N) is the type being used by the Late 2008, 2009 Macbook Pros. But since my firmware is Early 2008 the update wont install.
Can someone help me regarding this issue. Can i update manually (i.e by not using the installer package)?
    Thanx

What kind of noises is it making? After start/wake up some noise is normal (well, on my machine anyway) as the drive is checked for media.

  • Loud Popping Noise when wake from sleep

On my new iMac CD 20" there is a load popping noise that comes from the speakers when I wake it up from sleep. Also, the hard-drive or the super-drive clicks a few when waken from sleep. Yesterday there was a static noise coming from the speakers while I was using the machine on the web, it was load enough to be annoying, I restarted it and the sound went any. I am wondering if any others have noticed this problem and should I take it back for a new one.
My wife has even said that the sounds don't seem right.
    Any feedback would be great!
    Thanks.
    20" Intel iMac and 12 P-book- 867 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I conducted some tests on my iMac, and the problem, as it were, is related to having external speakers connected to my iMac. When I unplug my external speakers (JBL Encounter), I do not hear the pop upon waking my iMac from sleep. When I plug the speakers in again, the pop returns. I do not hear the pop when I mute the speakers before putting the iMac to sleep, either.
To rule out other devices, I unplugged all external devices and then reconnected them one at a time. Only the speakers triggered the pop.
I don't think this is a defect necessarily, even though I never heard the popping sound when waking my iMac G5 from sleep (with the same set of speakers). I think it may, as I suggest above, have something to do with the change in processors.
I may call Apple just the same to see what its tech. support people have to say on the matter.
Do those others of you experiencing the popping sound also have external speakers?

  • Strange noise on wake/power on

    Hi everyone,
After about 2 months of usage I noticed that my rMBP emits a wierd, spin-like noise from below the right side of the keyboard when waking from sleep or on power on.
I've uploaded a sample I recorded with my iPod: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwWAoQidwCwbWGtYUFpjZF9FQ1E/edit?usp=sharing
Please turn on your volume when listening the sample as it's a bit low and the sound only lasts about half a second. You can hear it at the beginning of the file.
Possibly the problem was present on purchase, but the first time I've noticed it was a few weeks ago.
Is this noise normal? Anyone else had a similar experience?
    Thank you!

    Thanks for your reply Barry,
I also suspected the fan, as there are no other moving parts in the computer.
It seems strange though that it always starts with a loud spin regardless of temperature.

  • Superdrive noises at wake up?

Not sure if anyone else has this issue, but my superdrive in my 15" MacBook Pro makes some funny noises since I loaded Snow Leopard. I realize Apple released firmware updates for the Mini and iMac, but we really need one for the MacBook Pro...
Sorry if this has been covered earlier, so if it has please let me know. If not, is anyone else having the same issue?

I was having this problem today. It sounded like it was trying to eject a DVD with a kind of jazzy rhythm. I assumed that there was a DVD stuck in there that I had forgotten about that wasn't showing on the desktop and tried all the "force eject DVD" advice I could find. Eventually resigned myself to probably having to get it taken apart and fixed.
I just tried sticking a CD in to see if it would nudge something into place and the CD went in and spun up - so the drive was empty all along. It ejected with no problem as well.
Since then, the noise has been back to the quiet hum that it was before, not the 3-stage jazz solo that had everyone in the office sniggering ...

  • Noise made when (dis)connecting the charger

    Hi,
just got my Z1C 2 days ago - very happy with it but my main frustration is the annoying noise which the phone makes when I plug it in or disconnect the charger.
I doubt it is relevant but so far I only use the magnetic charhing point - does it also occur with the micro-USB charger?
if it cannot be switched off then I might turn all the notifications or alerts off - does anyone know what "type of noise" the Xperia classes this as?
I hope I can switch it to silent!
    Thanks,

Thanks alexdon for your help - and everyone else.
I still haven't worked out what the noise is although it is still an issue - I'd like to be able to plug it in (prefereably on the magnetic dock) at night next to my bed, but the noise will wake my wife!
I've been travelling for a week - hence the lack of focus on this for the last few days, but I'll now try to get to the bottom of it.
Has anyone who's reading this thread got a Z1 Compact and no noise when (dis)connecting a charger?
    In Europe / UK?
The most frustrating thing is that it even happens in SILENT mode - all noises, ringtones, notifications OFF and it still makes a "clunk" when connecting and a "beep" when disconnecting"!
I tried the SAFE MODE boot and the noises were the same!
I'm not sure how to find out whether Vodafone have implemented this in some firmware (though I still think it's unlikley as there's no other hard / soft branding visible).
It is a company mobile and comes via a 3rd party Vodafone reseller.  They are not particularly good technically when it comes to any specific phone, but I did ask them.  Their answer was that they haven't come across these noises before and it might be worthwhile swapping the handset while it is less than 2 weeks old!
I think I'll take their advice!

  • On start up or from wake up

    Hi,
Just got a new mini and I've noticed that when I wake up the mini or start from being shut down it makes a kinda grinding noise. now, I know that they all make a noise on wake/start up but this seems a bit off a kind of stuck/metal grinding sound.
This only happens on wake or start up though.
    Any thoughts ?
    kindest,becca

This only happens on wake or start up though.
Assuming that you are not just being hyper-sensitive, the sound may be nothing more than the drive spinning up or down, or it may be something more significant, such as a bearing thrust face.
Many of these small drives make noises that have traditionally been regarded as alarming sounds which precede drive failure, but which are really quite normal for drives to make. In the history of hard drives, the larger they have been the more likely they were to obscure many of the common sounds we now hear from these small devices where there is only very thin casing components that tend to resonate at higher frequencies and thus actually help transmit the sounds rather than insulate against them. Consequently, you may be suffering nothing more than a different brand or model of drive in this mini making different noises than the previous one.
Try switching the energy saver to put the drive to sleep when possible and then running the system fairly hard for a week. If the sound is from the drive and related to spin up/down, you'll hear it every time the drive is put to sleep or woken, and after a week you should be able to tell if it's worse or not. By then, a fault would likely have begun to manifest itself by misbehavior or the noise itself changing. More than likely, you'll notice either no change or the sound getting a little quieter - in which case it would be safe to assume the drive is healthy enough.

  • Creaking sound upon wake from Sleep

I have only had my MBP (very first mac) last 1/25 and for a few days would wake from sleep totally silent.  In the last couple of days occasionally it wil make a creaking sound for a couple of seconds after I raise the lid sounds kinda like gears. Not very loud tho.  But since this is a refurbished (june 2012) unit I was just wondering if this is normal.  My old toshiba would always make creaky gear sounding noises at wake from sleep for much longer.  But since it is silent it is silent most times I was wondering if this was normal or a known problem?

If that's the case, however no one else replies to your thread, you might consider re-format your computer.
In fact I have. And this is on a freshly formatted drive unfortunately.

  • DVD Drive makes strange noises

    Hi,
I have a Macbook that whenever I put it into sleep the DVD drive keeps trying to eject a disk that's not in there, and continues to keep trying every 30 sec or so, and won't stop until I open the lid again.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I have this same problem. The eject routine runs every 10 secs for 7 attempts and then rests. Every 5 mins or so, the routine will run again every 10 secs for 7 attempts. After 5 cycles, it will stop and then the cycles will resume at a frequency that I have not been able to determine. Not a functional problem, but certainly annoying and enough noise to wake me up.

  • Clattering noise from Superdrive

My iMac G5 has started making a fairly loud clattering noise during wake from sleep and when ejecting an optical disk. It lasts about 1 second or so and is coming from the area next to the disk slot on the right side of the screen. I am assuming it's the superdrive making the racket. The superdrive itself has no problem reading and writing CDs and DVDs.
This is definitely a new phenomenon that just recently started. Aside from being disconcerting it is causing no functional problems. I use my iMac everyday in a home business and hate to have to lose it to be serviced. Has anyone else experienced this anomaly? Is there a way to fix this yourself?
Thanks for any friendly counsel on this!

I have the same loud electric razor-like noise while burning discs. Someone had mentioned previously they find it soothing or whatever, I certainly do not. It's actually quite emberrassing when people to whom I extoll Mac virtues are here when it happens. Far too loud and disconcerting for me. What is to be done for it? I hope this isn't my 2nd consecutive Mac with super-drive issues...

  • Help!! C2-01 reminder not working

I use the reminder function set to vibrate on the organiser to wake me up in the morning. I cant use the alarm, as the noise would wake my partner (I have to get up a couple of hours before he does). Its worked very well until today when it didn't go off. I've tried turning the phone off and back on again, and restored factory settings, but nothing works. I've set up a few "dummy reminders" as a test, but they just get ignored. Basically, the time goes by and nothing happens at all, even though if I go into the organiser they are definitely there. Please can anyone help?
    KittyKatt

Hi, Adrian, thank you for your help, and for the links. I checked for updates, but the phone couldnt find any. Last night I used the alarm function as I had an important meeting this morning I couldn't be late for, and I'm not sure if this is a coincidence, but it seems to have triggered the reminder function back into life. I've tried setting afew more "dummy appointments" and they've all been picked up correctly so far. The mystery thickens! Its a long shot, but I'm wondering if the recent daylight savings change may have upset it in some way and its now sorted out? I'm going to keep an eye on it, but it does seem to be ok at the momoent. Thank you again.

  • MacBook Pro Won't Sleep after Snow Leopard Install

Neither closing the computer, or selecting Sleep from the menu will allow my computer to enter slumber. Shorty after closing its eyes, my computer will make that unsettling grinding noise and wake up.
I've reset the PRAM, the PMU, turned off bluetooth, airport, all running applications. This only started happening after installing 10.6.
I found a thread on MacRumors discussing this problem, but there was no fix yet. So I bring it here. Can anybody guess what's up, or should I just take it in to the Apple store?

Don't bother taking it to the Apple Store. They won't be able to help. This is a bug in Snow Leopard. I don't know of any workaround or any way to make it stop. It doesn't happen all the time. Usually shutting down the machine will fix it. Sometimes, it will fix itself after a while.
It is important that you never assume a machine is going to go to sleep successfully. Always wait for the pulsating light. If it does go to sleep, chances are it will stay that way. I used iLid Preference Pane to make sure that my machine doesn't accidentally wake up while it is in a bag or something.
I've already filed a couple of bug reports about it. You can help you sending your feedback to Apple.

  • 'javac' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable prog

Hi. I'm new to Java programming. I'm taking a class and trying to get Java downloaded onto my computer. I installed the JDK 6 Update 5 with NetBeans 6.0.1 version. When I try to run the the following command for a program that has a .png file and .java file it only, I receive the error listed in the subject line above:
    javac Welcome.java.
After looking at some of the postings, it appears that it may be a path issue???? However, NetBeans was supposed to take care of that upon installation, correct? I'm lost and could really use some help fast.

PRINT THESE INSTRUCTIONS RIGHT NOW. But highlight and copy the below link for ease. Nobody is typing that monster URL.....
Do this for Windows XP: (Vista is ALMOST exactly the same...)
    1. Click on this link:
    http://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_Developer-Site/en_US/-/USD/VerifyItem-Start/jdk-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe?BundledLineItemUUID=gDVIBe.lPhYAAAEddxtQsC7o&OrderID=2blIBe.lYeAAAAEdbRtQsC7o&ProductID=mU9IBe.pkJgAAAEb7aMQVbLE&FileName=/jdk-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe
Save the file to your desktop, and when finished, open the file. *(Note, this link might have changed since Oct-2008. If so, find and install the latest version of java's JDK. Yes, it's called JDK, NOT JRE or anything else.)*
    2. This will install the JDK. (Java Development Kit)
    3. Do the following EXACTLY. Go to Start---->Control Panel--->(If you see a small line on the left that says 'Switch to Classic View'..... click it.)
Double click on "System" Then click on "Advanced" tab on the right. Click the "environment variables" button at the bottom.
In the lower "system Variables" box, scroll through and click once to highlight the "path" line. (NOT CLASSPATH!!!!! Path!)
    Click the "edit" button.
ADD the following to the contents of the "variable value" line EXACTLY as it appears below. Notice I say ADD. ADD the following line TO THE END OF WHATEVER IS ALREADY THERE! If you erase what is already there, you might mess up your system!!!!!
Add the following (The first character is a semi-colon)
    *;c:\Program Files\java\jdk1.6.0_10\bin*
(Note!~!!! Manually look for this file folder FIRST! At the time of this writing, the folder name at above left is CORRECT! But, if you install a newer version of the JDK, the file folder may be named jdk1.6.0_*11* etc, etc!!!!! Make the appropriate changes to the line when needed! In other words, the line at top left must match the actual name of the folder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Click okay 3 or so times to get out of those windows. The above steps will tell Windows XP where to look for the file javac.exe whenever someone types javac in the Command Window!!!!
    4. Open your C drive and make a new folder called 'Java'.
    5. Take any .java programs you wrote, (let's call one Program.java) and put them all in the c:\Java\ folder you just created. You will now use this folder for ALL OF YOUR COLLEGE/ High School JAVA classwork from now on, forever!!!!!
    6. Now, open a NEW DOS command prompt window. (Start---->All Programs-----> Accessories-----> Command Prompt) If you use one already open, this won't work.
    7. Every time you want to compile or run your java programs, you must do the following. EVERY TIME!
    8. Ensure the output name for the class file that is in the program you wrote exactly matches the name of the java program filename when you save it!!!! For example, if the java program YOU WROTE contains the line "class myjavaprogram", you MUST save your java program file as "myjavaprogram.java" else it WILL NOT WORK, PERIOD!!!! This web page will help with java: [http://www.geocities.com/gnashes30/java/tutorial/sim_prog.htm|wlmailhtml:{EF2D7E1B-4BFE-4B5D-8B76-095226DCE23B}mid://00000497/!x-usc:http://www.geocities.com/gnashes30/java/tutorial/sim_prog.htm|http://www.geocities.com/gnashes30/java/tutorial/sim_prog.htm
CTRL + Click to follow link]
    9. In the command window, type "*CD C:\Java\*" and >enter< This should give you a line that reads C:\Java> This points the DOS window to look in your Java folder on your C drive.
    10. Type "*javac myjavaprogram.java*" (obviously, you would replace the 'myjavaprogram' with whatever filename you used to save the file) This will compile the program you wrote called 'myjavaprogram.java'.
    11. This should produce a file called "myjavaprogram.class" in the C:\Java folder. (P.S. If you cannot see file extensions like .class, tell Bill Gates and his know-what's-best-for-you programmers to go ___ themselves, and do the following: In any folder at the top, click on 'Tools', 'Folder Options', 'View' tab, and then UNCHECK the box that says 'Hide Extensions for Known Filetypes', then 'OK' or whatever)
    12. To run your new class file, type "*java myjavaprogram.class*" then >enter< (Notice it says JAVA and NOT JAVAC!)
    13. It should run.
    14. Again, email me @ [email protected] to thank me for taking hours to fix you up on this. Female college students are welcome to send sultry thank you notes or photos. ;-)
    15. Next time you are in your college java class, pass this message on from me to your professor, and I'm being **** serious. "Listen up. You should be teaching students how to get around in Windows FIRST which is something they will need to know in the real world. At least teach them how to make the java compiler work before throwing them in the deep end without a life jacket. Love, [email protected]"
    16. Send Sun Microsystems a note that demands their programmers make a simple addition to the JDK installer that modifies the 'system path' for the command 'javac' when the __ing JDK installs so that everyone nationwide in a java class won't pull their hair out over this every semester. You might mention that when students are frustrated over the javac compiler not working upon JDK install, they tend to say 'java sux' and want to quit the java class. (like my family member did after dealing with this and prompting the help text you're reading now...) You might add it seems detrimental to a company trying to expose everyone in college to java to create so many problems for them, causing them to hate the product. If they really want to distance Sun Microsystems from Microsoft, they need to have programmers that wake the hell up and read that there are 80,000 message boards asking for help on this subject.

    This is happening repeatedly.
    What's up?
    Any fixes for this?
My website, business and income await a reply.
    Thanks for any help.

I looked around for a bit but couldn't find any posts - or web pages on the main site for that matter that actually addresses the locking up issues that Dreamweaver is having.
I mean there's plenty of users complaining about it (like this guy), i'm just not sure any actual people work at Adobe, just CusSer robots, btw I'm actually looking for user suggestions as Dreamweaver has no ******* idea what's wrong with it's own program - nor give off the attitude that they care.
How about just stripping the whole damn thing down and start over, you know like a Chrome version - you know, so that when you accidentally input the wrong image path it doesn't take 18 minutes to kill the process without having to control alt delete - what the hell is it doing, not just with that but with everything it does, what's all the unneccesary background noise constantly, what the hell is this program doing on my server when I connect that is so damn intensive it can't let go long enough to listen to the guy telling it what the hell to do.
I'm really just ******** because I already know there isn't an answer - I'm moving from my love hate relationship with adobe into just straight up hate.
No reply necessay - I've already replaced most of my web design tools, not because I wanted more from web developer tools, but simply because I didn't want to think about how much money i am wasting of my employer having to spend 3 hours on a support call with no results (EVER) I've made a few too, and sitting here tinkering with buggy **** ALL day.

  • Terrible Slowness with iMac

Hello: Just in the last few days, I have a terrible new problem on my iMac.   It is unberably slow.   Launching an app can take 30 seconds or more.   Something as simple as changing a tab on a browser can go on forever. It is unbelievably strange - a
