Nokia Has Forsaken the N96 in Asia-Pacific.

Go to the Nokia Asia Pacific support page for the N96 - http://www.nokia-asia.com/get-support-and-software/product-support/nokia-n96 and it's official - Nokia have forsaken this handset.
It's actually quite embarrassing. This page has not changed since December 2008 when firmware version 12.043 came out. And that's been it for Asia Pacific customers. As of today, 31st October 2009, the page still invites you to update to the 'latest' 12.043!!
Meanwhile, the rest of the world has enjoyed firmware releases 21.xxx and now 30.033 (not that it instills me with any confidence that in 30 software versions, Nokia STILL cannot get it right), but this is a downright slap in the face to customers who have paid TOP DOLLAR for this phone (remember, it was the flagship model 12 months ago). It simply isn't good enough, Nokia!
After repeated emails and calls to Nokia, and similar to my service provider, Optus, reporting all the daily crashes, lock-ups and overall SLOWNESS of this phone, I finally took my case to the Telephone Industry Ombudsman (TIO) here in Australia.
I kid you not, within HOURS I had a customer service rep from Optus phoning me to apologise profusely for the lack of support for this phone. Some investigations were made, and Optus, still unable to get any reasonable response from Nokia, offered me an entirely new phone - to my choice - without having to sign up to another plan (I still have 12-months to go on the N96).
So that's it for me everyone! Reading around the forum here I see the N97 is beset with just as much **bleep** as the N96, and so my nice shiny new iPhone 3GS 32GB is on the way. Thanks Optus!!
This N96 is going now where it thoroughly deserves to be - in the bin!! And good riddance!
Needless to say, it is definitely the last Nokia that will ever darken my doorstep. After over 15 years of customer loyalty, I'm off.
See you all over on the iPhone forums?

Nokia: Connecting People... with iPhones.

I think Optus may have been telling you some porkies.
I had similar experiences with my Vodafone Ireland N95 8gb. I bought it with V12. When V21 was released, I waited a few months and nothing happened so I contacted Vodafone who immediately blamed Nokia, so I contacted Nokia only to be told the firmware update had been sent to Vodafone for their modification and approval. It was up to Vodafone to modify the soft to include their branding nd then return it to Nokia for release. After further frustrating calls to Vodafone, I was finally put through to someone who told me that the update was on his desk and he would get round to it the next week and he did. I got my V21 the next week.
When the next update came along, once again I waited and finally decided to ring when there was no sign of it. Again Vodafone's immediate response was to blame Nokia. However I knew better this time and finally got put through to the correct person again. This time he told me they had no intentions of spending anymore time on updates for the N95 8gb because it was not a popular phone for them and that V21 was stable enough. In other words I am stuck at V21 and still amto this day. Maybe I should contact the ombudsman as well.
I think Optus have not told you the truth and have paid you off with a new phone to keep you quiet. The truth is they can't be bothered working on the update since you could be the only one shouting for it.

Having a problem sending e-mails and faxes from SAP (EH&S) that contain Asia/Pacific fonts.  The e-mails look good in SAP but in Outlook the Asia/Pacific characters are replaced by the pound sign ("#").

System Preferences > Keyboard > Text. Click the + symbol to add a keyboard shortcut. Click in the left empty Replace text window and place GBP there. Tab, and enter option+# (£) in the With text input area. Click outside of this row to set the contents. Exit System Preferences.
In the application where you wish to have this substitution performed for you, in the Edit menu > Substitutions submenu, select Text Replacement. Then when you type GBP, a floating panel will open below GBP with the pound sterling symbol — just press the spacebar.
Another approach is to use the special character viewer from the bottom of the Edit menu. If ISO-8859-1 is not one of your categories, use the gear icon in the top left to add it. Click on the £ symbol, and in the enlarged view on the right, click on the Add to Favorites. In the future, when you want to add the pound sterling symbol, launch this character viewer, click on Favorites at the top of the category column, and then double-click the £ symbol to have it inserted at the current pointer location in your document. Not as efficient as typing GBP.

  • Has anyone got Python to work on the N96???

Has anyone got Python to wok on the N96?
I have downloaded and installed the latest edition 3rd 1.4.4 i think. it goes on the phone without any problems.
However when trying to use app that use python specifically pyPiow at the moment the app goes on the phone but nothing happens when i try to open it!
is it somthing i am doing wrong, where go i install the pictures, or the apps for that matter, can the apps go on the mass memory where they are now or do they have to go on the very small phone memory?!
does current python work at all on the n96
    has anyone had any joy?
    please help!
    cheers

I managed to get it to work, you have to install two files
the first for the actual python script files.
the second for the user interface.
you might have installed the user interface, but without installing python, and that's why its not loading up the application, also make sure you install python to phone memory.
    On my N96 I installed:
    Python for S60 1.4.4
    Python script shell 1.4.4
if you get an 'update error' when installing its because you have not un-installed all of the old python stuff, open app manager on the handset and un-install all python relating files
one last thing, install python and the shell to the phone memory (c drive)
    Hope it helps

  • Nokia have solved the probem about n96?

the slide problem of n95 and n95 8g and n81 is so terrible!
if u use it for long time the slide will be loose and not comfortable!
i want to know whether the nokia can solve the problem in n96?
the samsung's phone does not have the slide problem!
but i wish nokia can solve it,if they can the nokia will be much better!!!!
    Do better than the best!

i've heard of this problem " the jerky slider" before, but as far as i know and read around the net, late production units were equipped with a better mechanism.
in fact i've seen some pictures around of the improved mechanism "i'll try to locate those ".
it's obvious that it's too early to judge the N96, but i think that the sliding mechanism in nokia slides is improving with each new model , just take a look at the N80 and the 6110 navigator "big big difference"

  • Nokia Ovi maps for N96

I have installed Nokia Ovi Maps 3.01 (the only available for N96), but my license has expired. I can't update it via shop (update unavailable, because Nokie doesn't sell them) and I can't use navigation because... license has expired. What should I do? Is it possible to remove license file (somehow) or bypass this unneeded check?

I don't think there's a lot you can do except wait for the Free Navigation version to arrive on the N96.
You could use the Contact Us link at the top of the page to contact Nokia Direct about this

  • Nokia Maps (Navteq) from N96 to N97

    Hi,
Is it possible to move Nokia Maps (Navteq) from N96 to N97 and how?

Map Loader tells me I'm using
    Map Loader 3.0.28.0
    Nokia N97 (Map version 0.1.22.103)
And the phone tells me I'm using
    Maps 3.03(54) (from Betalabs).
There is no Services tab any more, and the Map Loader Help only tells me I can download Maps and Voices. The Help doesn't mention Services.
I got my 3 year Western Europe licence about 18 months ago, for my N95. As soon as I plugged my old sim into the N97, and ran Maps (2.0 at the time) it went off to the internet and "verified" the licence info.
At that time the Map Loader app had a brown interface, and didn't change for a long time. The Services tab gave a priced list of all the extras, and you could buy them through the app. It also explained that you had the choice of whether to link your license to the sim or the phone. I remember thinking it through at the time, and deciding to link it to the sim, because I still have my N95, and sometimes switch the sim into that phone. Since Ovi has taken over the app, all that choice and explanation has gone (at least for me).
Maybe I'm not seeing the Services tab because I'm using the Betalabs version  3.03(54)?
    Edit:-
By the way, I used to get the Services tab when I linked to my N95 running Maps 2.0, but I don't remember the version of Map Loader I used at the time.

  • Should i buy the n96 or not !!! ???

i was planning to buy the n96 after tomorrow but i've read too many complaints about it's software and sound . And that it has too many crashes . And not all the new phones are available here in Egypt ,, so i dont know wut to do !! any advice ????

Research your local service provider first.
I have an N96, and think it is the worst phone Nokia has ever made.
It IS very slow. The processor used in this phone is clearly underpowered for the software installed. My phone - on version 11 software - crashes frequently. Several times a day. Sometimes I miss calls because the software is too slow in interacting with the slide! Sliding the phone open doesn't always answer a call - closing the slide never hangs up the call.
Unless you buy an 'unbranded' phone (branded means your service provider puts their logo in the phone etc..), you may not be able to receive firmware updates. Nokia have set a strange policy that the service provider must approve software updates before they can be released, but, in Australia anyway, did not tell the service providers, and so version 11 is as high as we go here.
It hates talking to non-Nokia Bluetooth headsets. My Plantronics headset frequent disconnects and reconnects.
The DVB-H TV feature is only of any use if DVB-H broadcasts are available in your country. Australia doesn't have it (despite Nokia's advertising that gently implied the opposite).
The GPS software leaves a lot to be desired. It is simply not intuitive and MANY major street names in Sydney are missing. Infuriating. Also, the GPS is simply not integrated properly with the phone. If you receive a call while using the GPS, the GPS software suspends while you take the call. Sometimes it returns, often it does not. Even the Tomtom software on my N80 worked much better than this - allowing me to make and receive calls while still providing me with directions.
The voice dialling is very poor. It seldom interprets the most obvious of names and fails to work in anything but the most quietest of environments.
I have written to Nokia several times now outlining all the bugs I keep finding in this phone. I am yet to receive any kind of a response. This will be the last Nokia phone I will ever buy.
I have two other friends now that have the N96 and are extremely disappointed with it.
My advice would be to get a cheap, basic phone, and buy a separate GPS (if that's what you want), or buy an N95 on eBay or somewhere. People with N95s seem a lot happier.

  • Nokia has made me mad!

I dont know how many of you have read the post concerning the n93 being available to update via nsu again and the new "feature" which is that night video recording in black and white is a "feature" not an error
is everyone at nokia a politician? Cause i would only expect such garbage responses from politicians or lawyers! My question to nokia is why dont other nseries phones carry this feature? Why is the present flagship phone(arguably) not able to record night video in colour? And its predecesors such as the n90 and n80 even more recent n73 and n92 capable of such?
Nokia has made me so upset! Honestly what i really want to say cant be posted here(check my blog tomorrow!) nokia do you really think that feature and response really makes it better or your loyal consumers should swallow that? Advice to nokia release the current fw of the n93i as a new fw for the n93 call it v21 and problem fixed! I dont know how possible this is by the way but it sounds feasible to me any suggestions from the masses on the latest nokia response? Or am i the only upset person?

Unfortunately, N-series phones have a nasty habit of doing this
I think that reducing the number of applications you have running at the same time can reduce how often this happens - press and hold the menu button to see what you have running then switch to the applications you don't need and close them down.

But why then Nokia seperates according to product codes if a device can be imported and exported anywhere arnd the world? This makes most customer having difficulties after purchase to update the firmware and additional products.
If another product code tagged device arrives in the country which its not meant to be sold? then the customers will face difficulties.I've seen firmware updating issues as a serious matter, since most people are not enjoying these stuffs.
As in my country the product codes are:

  • While the Nokia site says the Lumia update is avai...

    Hi all,
When you have read the thread on the update release, you have visited the update webpages but when you check in Zune it says you have the latest update installed please read the following.
The status indication on the Nokia website tells you whether the update is approved and made available for distribution through the Microsoft update path. When the update actually becomes available for your Lumia 710 or 800 you will receive a notification on the phone after which you can install the update using Zune.
Also please be aware the Zune update checker uses a cache which will allow you to actually check the status in Zune once in 24 hours. If you check again within this time you will receive the same result as before even if the update becomes available in the meantime. So to make sure you get the update as soon as it becomes available it is best to wait for the notification on the phone.
Propagation through the update servers for Zune may take a some time and is something Nokia has no control over so please have a little more patience when you see the status as 'Update Available' on the Nokia webpage and wait for the notification on your Lumia Windows Phone.
When the update becomes available for your phone it will come in three parts. Two updates for the WIndows Phone OS and the update for the Nokia Firmware. These will be applied sequentially but there can be some time between them being offered through Zune. Please make sure you do check for additional software when you have installed the first and/or second one.
'OK, but what about the promised update apps like Camera Extras?'  you may ask.
    Please go to the update apps webpage and read the notes which state;
*Camera Extras will be available from Marketplace during June and July 2012. To optimise performance of the Camera Extras application with the Nokia Lumia 610 certain features may be limited. Nokia City Lens will be available for Nokia Lumia 900, 800, and 710 during 2012.
    Hope this helps,

I am also a proud N9 owner but i have the more shy 16gb version. I bought mine from optimus although I have never done anything to unlock it from day 1 i stuck my vodafone micro-sim in and it worked perfectly (:
I have also been waiting since it was announced. This would be much easier if Nokia made the update available through the Nokia Suite or even on a support website.
    We wait...

I appreciate the pointer to the Adobe info, but none of this worked.
I'm going to have to buy another copy of Dreamweaver, because I just don't have time to figure out how to fix this.
By the way, if anyone from Adobe is reading this, I have a VERY low opinion of your customer support. Too bad -- this is the way companies damage their reputations, in some cases in ways that can't easily be fixed. Just ask Dell. . . .

  • Mac & Nokia Syncing Over-the-Air vs Bluetooth

Over the last 5 years, I've owned a number of high-end Nokia phones and Mac laptops. The principle source of my anguish has been keeping my Nokia's contacts in Full-sync with my Mac's Address Book ;-)
I think I ended up buying 3-4 different iSync Bluetooth plugins for different Nokia phones over the years to accomplish this goal. I've been asking myself can't I use the Internet to sync my Nokia contacts with my Mac's Address Book?
That way I'd possibly have another implicit copy of my vital personal contacts info in a protected Internet server in case I need to restore my contacts?
Am I asking for something that all PC users (not Mac users) get to enjoy? Is there any Mac-based modern server-oriented solution out there that circumvents all the issues that come with Bluetooth pairing and changing iSync plugins??
I'd love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, opinions in this Mac & Nokia area.

A Nokia Ovi Suite for Mac sounds great. I hope, however, it fits in and reuses things that are already in the Mac. For example, I love the currently arrangement of an iSync plugin to sync to the Mac's AddressBook and iCal, and NMT to sync to iPhotos, iTunes, etc. It would be better to sync directly from iTunes like how it works with an iPod Touch or iPhone, but I suppose Apple doesn't want 3rd party hardware to enjoy this level of seamless integration. Perhaps it would be nice to have NMT integrated as a System Preferences pane.
My point is, don't recreate things that already work beautifully on the Mac.
Btw, NMT is broken on Snow Leopard. Any information on when this will be fixed, or if this is being looked at?
If Apple is not going to all Palm to have direct access to the iTunes database, you can be 100% sure that Nokia will not get access. Apple is protecting their territory I guess. There is nothing wrong with the way NMT works except that it does not work well. In my opinion as a .v1 user, it has never worked really well. It seemed that NMT was more of a hobby than a serious attempt to create functional software.

I'm using Indesign CS3 Asia Pacific distribution (Made in Singapore & Printed in Singapore)
    Incorporated in San Jose, CA.
I'm an english user using Windows XP SP2.
I have all the needed Urdu words in .xls
    Various Urdu fonts.
    Problem 1:
I need to have all the Urdu words in correct manner (right to left) in Indesign CS3.
    Done:
I have installed 'files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)' & 'files for East Asian languages' under the Regional and Language options in Windows XP.
I have read over and tried to 'save as' from .xls to .doc and place it in Indesign CS3.
    Problem 2:
I was able to place the Urdu words from .doc into Indesign CS3 and still, the fonts will read from left to right.
    Please help.
    Thanks a lot!
    Rgds,
    Ms. Dela

    If you need CJK support
*and* RtL Support, you're out of luck! :(
The Asian version doesn't have RtL support, and the ME version doesn't have CJK options. You can't install both on the same machine, and a file created using ME options can not be opened on a non-ME version. The only course of action would be to set the CJK options using a CJK version, and then bring the file into an ME version (on a different computer).
If it's only a small amount of RtL text, you can try using reversed text in the non-ME version. There are various scripts which can reverse existing text.
    Good Luck!

  • Is there a list somewhere of Nokia phones that the...

Why I am asking this question is my Nokia 6600 fold went faulty (see note below about this) and has been replaced by O2 with a Nokia 6700 slide. Now I don't like slide phones so I bought a 7020 fold on eBay.
What I am looking for is an adapter for these phones (each have 2.5 mm AV connector) that will allow me to connect my noise cancelling headphone's 3.5 mm jack to (I was able to do this on the adapter that came with my 6600 fold phone).
I googled and found that one option may be the Nokia AD-44 but I am not sure it will work with either the Nokia 6700 slide or 7020 fold.
So my question, is there a list somewhere of Nokia phones that the AD-44 adapter will work with?
Note: the faulty Nokia 6600 fold phone was a replacement for the original Nokia 6600 fold phone and both have had the well documented 'm, n, o' problem when sending a message that locked the phone and all that could be done was to power off!

    Hi there,
I managed to find an old list of compatibility with HS-44 / AD-44 but nothing for the adaptor on it's own.
    Nokia 3600 Slide
    Nokia 3710 Fold
    Nokia 3720 Classic
    Nokia 5610 XpressMusic
    Nokia 5700 XpressMusic
    Nokia 6110 Navigator
    Nokia 6120 Classic
    Nokia 6210 Navigator
    Nokia 6212
    Nokia 6220 Classic
    Nokia 6290
    Nokia 6700 Slide
    Nokia 6730 Classic
    Nokia 7610 Supernova
    Nokia E66
    Nokia E71
    Nokia E90
I can't promise this is ALL th ehandsets though, since the list is quite old. Also I am almost certain that this adaptor converts Nokia 2.5mm to Nokia 3.5mm, Nokia connectors are different to a standard headphone as there is an additional connection for voice.
If using non -Nokia headphones you may need a further adaptor.
    Hope this helps a little?
