Nokia Maps is a giant step backwards

My relevant background - I live in Los Angeles, owned an HTC HD7S for more than a year and just recently got a Lumia 920. I like everything about my new 920 except vibration noise, and this horrid Nokia Maps app which is forced on us...
Problems with Nokia Maps:
Lack of integration with the rest of the operating system.
Nokia maps is an island to itself. I click an address from a people hub contact, it opens Windows Phone Maps, not Nokia Maps. I click an address from a Bing search which has a dedicated hardware button, and it opens Windows Phone Maps, not Nokia Maps. I click an address in an email, you guessed it, it opens Windows Phone maps.
Searching in Nokia Maps has terrible results
I tried 3 searches today during the course of my day using Nokia Maps. Si Laa is a Thai restaurant I wanted to try a few miles from my house with an obviously unique name. The results I get are for Joyce Cafe, something in Germany and Slovenia. Next I try UPS in hopes it will find the company owned UPS Customer Center a quarter mile from my house. It doesn't find it at all, but does find alot of ups stores that are further away. Nokia Maps choked on another restaurant in Beverly Hills I tried to find. My wife's iPhone 4s had no problems with any of these.
Local surface street traffic info is missing
On the Lumia 920, I don't get any surface street traffic info. I do see traffic info for highways and freeways. I used to get local surface street traffic on my old HD7S Windows Map. Windows Phone Maps shows some sporadic street traffic data but is not quite right either. I called Nokia about it, the level 1 techie tells me I'm supposed to have local street traffic but has no further explanation and has escalated to level 2...
Nokia removed the Windows Phone Maps.
As shown in the first point above, Windows maps is still clearly on the phone, but Nokia removed the tile for it from the app list. There doesn't seem to be a way to directly open Windows maps. This would be fine except that Nokia maps, which is supposed to be the replacement, is worse than Windows Phone maps in so many ways.
There isn't a single reason to use Nokia Maps over Windows Phone Maps.
The only reason I use it is because Nokia has seen fit to make Windows Phone Maps hard to start by removing it from the apps list.
Nokia should leave both map apps available and in the apps list.
If Nokia Maps is the superior product, people will use it. Right now I'd say Windows Phone maps is superior in every way and that's a shame for Nokia who is supposed to be a mapping leader...

Hi - Do you have latest versions? As mine works fine see below.

I can select a contacts address, see it on the map, then request directions and then swith to drive each step with one tap of an option or icon

I needed to find a vet the other day. Did a seaarch and then onto drive easily. Same works using Nokia City Lens. select a place and then walk or drive.

Nokia maps and drive share same data set and can be used in offline mode

• Snow Leopard's digital sound is a giant step backwards

I have a Mac Pro connected to a Pioneer receiver using an optical cable. When I was running system 10.5 my DVD's would play in DVD player with 5.1 digital sound ( I have a surround sound system connected for the sound). With Snow Leopard all the DVD player application outputs is Dolby Pro logic. A big difference in sound. If I boot up in Windows Vista using Boot Camp and play the same DVD I get 5.1 digital sound. Something seems to be wrong in OSX 10.6. I am going to go back to 10.5 until Apple gets this sound thing fixed unless someone here can tell me how to get the 5.1 digital sound to work in 10.6. This is a huge let down for me, and it would seem to me to be a giant step backwards for the operating system.

HI,
This would make a good feedback topic for Apple.

Note, they read feedback but do not respond. But since this worked in 10.5 then hopefully that will be taken into consideration. Audio is important!

iwork on iOS uses different file formats ( *.tef ) then iwork09 on Mac ( *.key , *. number , *.page ).
Uploaded documents to icloud.com must first be updated to the *.tef format and then re-written to the cloud system. The online service behind the iwork web-app does the re-conversion to Mac formats, pdf or Microsoft office. All that is happening "in the cloud", not on your Mac as he misses the engine to do the transcoding from the *.tef to the other formats. Mac simply does not know what *.tef is.

• Belle - A big step backwards.

Nokia Belle is a big a step backwards.
1. Battery life has gone pathetic. My phone does not last 4 hours, while with anna, it lasted 18 hours.
2. No way for user to kill background tasks. (App stop is not available for belle)
3. No augmented reality apps. (No wikitude, not even Nokias live view, or city view)
4. Top icons are not responsive anymore. I cannot click on battery icon and go to power saving mode.
5. App installation takes twice as long.
6. Many apps install, but do not work. (e.g. astroller).
7. Six screens have too many apps running.
Somebody PLEASE advise how to go back to anna?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

The whole Belle experience is vastly improved from Anna, more versatile , quicker, modern, feature filled and functional, try searching the user guide on the phone, spend some time exploring it, you may find you're being over critical, The update is a MAJOR software change, not a slight update, it's like getting a brand new phone, spend a couple of days tinkering and you may turn out to really like it
I cannot for the life of me recognise the Belle improvements.
Experience is vastly improved=> can you name some of the improvements?
more versatile: examples?
quicker=> No noticable difference as far as I can tell.
modern=> you mean ugly
feature filled=> What features? I only miss features I had with Anna
(eye candy isn't a feature in my opinion)
functional=> How is removing features functional?
My experience:
Widgets are bigger and clunky and cannot be configured. I have tried everything, but
I cannot make my homescreens look as nice and neat as I had them with Anna.
Moreover, I need MORE homescreens for the same info.
The highly functional date/clock/profile widget I enjoyed in Anna is no longer available.
Now all I get is a BIG ugly clock and an ugly grey profile widget that does not show self-
created profiles (I created an Outdoor profile, because the Anna standard one is no
longer there!)
Ugly text under the shortcut icons that cannot be removed (a choice would have been
nice)
Widget online/offline toggle is no longer available.
I can only access 'Open applications' by long pressing the menu button. I liked the
menu option better. I do not want to wear out my menu button or have the bottom of my
phone drop off. I love my N8 and do not want to lose it anytime soon. Forcing me to use
hardware buttons when there perfectly fine menu options in Anna is just plain annoying.
I can no longer create folders within folders. (Yes I liked that feature!)
I can no longer switch homescreens by clicking on the software button on the bottom
middle of the screen. (Yes, I used that a lot)
I can no longer turn on battery saving by clicking on the battery. Now I have to either
press the power button or dive into the menu.
I liked the notification widget much better than that eyecandy slide down notification bar.
I can no longer access the connectivity menu via the homescreen. I need to go to
menu/settings/connectivity.
With Anna, connection settings were easier. When on the road, my 3G connection was
automatically selected and whenever I was within range of a known WiFi connection,
that connection was automatically selected. With Belle I have to set the internet
connection to ask what connection I want. The only other option is to hardcode either
3G or a specific WiFi network. If that selected connection is not available, the
connection fails. So now when I access the internet I first have to select the desired
accesspoint. How's that an improvement?
I do not have more RAM available than I had before (80MB-90MB) and my phone does not run smoother/faster than under Anna (which was just as smooth/fast on my phone, I had no complaints!). And yes my phone was empty when I upgraded. Before I upgraded I synchronised my contacts/messages/photo's and uninstalled all apps I had installed and then performed a soft reset. The phone was empty, like I just got it from the store. I currently do not use a microSD and install all apps on the mass storage (not on C.
I am the kind of person that buys and uses the phone that I like and that gives me the functionality that I need. I do not feel any need to impress my friends. If they don't like my phone, tough! I am the one using it, so I am the only one who has to like it. All this added Eye Candy is therefore useless to me. Couldn't they just have added the eye candy without removing the handy Anna features? Then everybody would have been happy.
Someone please tell me what it is that I am, judging by your comments, obviously missing!!! Let me know what I have overlooked, because I love Nokia and I love Symbian and I want to love Belle, but I just cannot. :-(

• Nokia Maps 2.0 don't show maps on N95

Installed the latest firmware on the N95 (V21.0.016 14-02-08 RM-159 A5.01), formatted the memory card, installed Nokia Maps 2.0 (v2.0wk21b02), started it (in order for MapLoader to work properly), installed MapLoader 1.3.8, installed the swiss and german maps via MapLoader (the files are definitively in the 'cities' directory on the memory card), rebooted the phone then started the maps application again. The GPS works find but no map is displayed (even though I'm in Switzerland, everything is just green background, no matter what kind of view (satellite, hybrid, 3d, normal) I choose.
What's wrong? Bad quality assurance?

I got it working!!! I sure hope this helps you all too!!!!
Firstly, make sure you go to the app. manager on your phone (usually found in the applications folder) and delete the nokia maps 2 from there.
Also reformat your memory card.
Then do what needtogetfit posted but I've made it step by step for ppl like me LOL):
Connect your phone to your computer using the "data transfer" NOT PC Suite. A folder should show up, if not, go to 'my computer' and it will be there as "memory card" or whatever you have named your card.
Open it and you will see a few files in there. Make sure you delete the folder "cities" or "diskcashe" if it is still there and also delete a file called qf-file. (for some reason they seem to stay there even after a reformat etc and that's what seems to stop the maps from being seen properly)
I also made sure I had 'show hidden files' checked in the tools/folder options/view so I could see if they were hidden or not.
I then installed the nokia maps from my computer onto my phone via PC suite.
Open up your maps (it may take awhile cause it's starting a new directory structure on your memory card to replace the ones you deleted)... and allow it to connect to the internet briefly so you can get satellite coverage. (dont panic, you will still only see a green page, but if you zoom out you should at least now see your country etc)
Once you've done that, close and connect your phone to your computer using the "data transfer" and open up the map loader program and download your countries maps + voices you may want.
Once done, go back to your maps and you will find that all the streets will be showing once again!!
I hope this helps, it worked for me and I tried it on two different reformatted cards that weren't working before this.

• N95 Nokia Maps 2.0 crashing

Help !
Last week I updated the firmware on my unbranded N95 to the latest 21.0.016 and udated Nokia Maps, then went a drive in the car to use the free trial and it worked perfectly.
As I was going on holiday at the start of the week, I purchased the 30day useage and also the traffic info update.
On Monday we set of on our holidays, we stopped at a service station and before leaving I put on Nokia Maps, within minutes it had pinpointed my location, but it kept asking to close my current connection and every time i did it the phone turned off!
If i selected no, it would let me select my destination and then crash!
I have lots of applications installed, so i removed anyone that used the GPS function (ie Picture locator) and it still does not work.
The only items that remain live (that I know of) when the phone is on is Step Counter & M-Panel, i removed M-Panel and turned of Step Counter and it does not make any difference at all.
I am annoyed that I have spent money and I cant use it, also the Traffice Info never worked anywhere I went, it kept saying (not availabe). Even when on M74 & M6
I went on to Nokia FAQ when I came back from holidays and it is a known problem,
I have re-installed Nokia Maps 2.0 and maps / voices but it still crashes.
Has anyone experienced this?

N95-1 with LATEST FIRMWARE
& "Nokia_Maps_2.0_2204_3.1_u.sis"
UPDATE:
Now MAPS 2.0 loads perfectly connecting to WIFI LAN but as I zoom in closer as I get to street view it crashed out eveytime. and zooming into recent find the same.
Tried GPS ASSISTED, crashes out
Tried Just Network BAsed but crashes the same.
And before I was able to do everything except LIVE GPS Voice Assisted guidance but it would PREVIEW the Journey and the Voice used to work, its now totally unusable.

• Big Headache with N70 and nokia maps

I have recently come accross nokia maps and i think it is such an excelent idea. But when i was following the steps on how to get downloaded maps on to my n70 i hit a big brick wall. Suposedly i need to put my phone into data mode, and as i have found that is not an option. I also know that i would work if i had a mmc card reader. unfortunately i dont.
so is there any type of work around for this problem.
plz help as i am not the only 1 with this problem

or even better intergrate this into pc suit so that no matter how it is connected. you will always be able to use maps. Nokia have an excelent idea here but they havn't quite got it right. SO TO THE NOKIA PEOPLE OUT THERE, ANSWER THE EMAILS I SENT YOU OR POST SOMETHING ON THIS TOPIC plz

• Nokia Maps lost after firmware update

I had Nokia Maps installed on my N73 some time ago, it worked without problems. Now when I updated the phone software to v4.735.3.0.2 it is included in the base software. But the new version (1.2) does not show any map data - only a blank screen (and the globe).
I use only the free parts - no network, no GPS, no guides. The maps I downloaded with Map Loader. It has a new version too, so I installed it, deleted the old maps and re-downloaded some of them. But they still do not show onscreen.
There is also a downloadable version of Nokia Maps 1.2, but it cannot install on the phone - some error appears. Neither can I uninstall the version on the phone - it says "Cannot delete file".
What is the problem? Is it that the phone language is Bulgarian, while the maps are in English (there are no maps in Bulgarian)? It was not a problem before, and the UI still appears in Buglarian.
Or, maybe there are some trays of the older version which I can delete manually. In fact, it was first installed in phone memory (so were the maps). Then, I moved the maps to the memory card, and after a previous phone software update, I installed the application on the memory card too.
Please help me find the maps. Thanks!

I managed to view the maps somehow:
1. Connect the USB in card reader mode
2. Download the maps using MapLoader
3. While the memory card is connected, copy and paste the \private\20001f63\diskcache folder to \cities\diskcache in Windows Explorer
4. Disconnect only from the tray icon on the desktop
5. The maps are now visible.
This is obviously not a perfect solution. The maps use double space on the memory card. The network cannot be used to update them, only Map Loader. After any download the steps above must be reapplied.
The application cannot be uninstalled/reinstalled. It seems all the problems appeared when Nokia Maps was included in the firmware and concern users which had installed it before on phone memory. I hope they will be resolved in next software update from Nokia.

• Traffic information in Nokia Maps

Is it possible to include this option in Nokia Maps in future? I am asking, because in PC version this option exists. So, doesn't it will be great to enjoy it in mobile version?

I have a Nokia E7 and I am using my N9 as my primary phone right now, but I can say, I miss the Navigation on the E7, it was simpler, faster, had more optoions and features, and the live traffic on the E7 is excellent, very good Navigation App. I Love the facebook check in via Nokia Maps on my E7, where as with the N9 there is no functional check in at all unless via 3rd party apps (Fmobi) so yes, I would like to see the same Symbian Nokia Maps brought to the N9 as well as upcoming Windows PHone devices, it is a setp backwards in its current form.

• Apple!! My new OS and New Phone are a step Backwards!

Sorry Apple... I am a devoted fan, but I feel cheated!!
The new Maps app is a huge step backwards. For those of us who use (rely on) the Maps app, the MAJOR reduction in map data is a huge disappointment.
Also - the Find iPhone app has the same reduction in map data. I used to be able to check when my kids were out of class/walking on campus in college so I wouldn't call them during class, and now the whole campus is one even color. It used to show buildings with labels and everything.
I don't expect you to be friends with Google, but WHY would you sacrafice US (your loyal -paying- customers) ????

Yep - keyboard docked at the bottom of screen but still need to reposition (scroll up) search window. Maybe next revision will help. Thank u for the suggestion.

I know we can't remove the maps v3.08 from our phone(mine nokia c7) itself because it is not showing in apps manager. But i found out an alternate way.I have not yet tried it ,but u can see if it works and tell us about it.
For this use the "Nokia PC Suite v 7.1.62.1" and not nokia ovi suite on ur pc.
If u go to application manager in the pc suite it shows all the apps installed including the nokia maps 3.08 and its other files also.
So anyone tries it and it works well pls post about it.
Thanks

Hi - I have just removed V3.08 by just downloading V3.06 again from the OVI store and installing it. It worked like a charm on my E7. Hopefully nokia/ovi keeps the V3.06 version on the ovi store, because V3.08 is in many ways a downgrade from V3.06. eg, you cannot go to a location and use the "add to route" feature in order to have multiple stop-overs on a route and you can only have a route calculated from your current location - which makes saving a route for later use pointless.
@roftie,
Be warned that as you didn't removed v3.08, some things may not work as before on your phone!
Like you, after completly disliking v3.08, I simply installed v3.06 over it, from Nokia Store. Maps 3.06 did worked correctly then, but soon I realized that the integration between contacts adresses and Maps 3.06 had stopped working. If I tried to verify a new contact's adress on the map, Maps 3.06 opened with an error. Same occured when I tried to locate an existing contact's address on the map.
The only solution was to uninstall Maps 3.06, install Maps 3.08, completly remove Maps 3.08 and installing Maps 3.06 again. Only after all those steps I was able to make the integration between contacts adressses and Maps work correctly.
The official way of completly removing Maps 3.08 is: http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/ovi-maps-for-mobile-v3-08/more_info#Revert
Regards.
forgot to mention: my phone is a C6-01 w/ Anna.

• Ovi Maps and Nokia Maps - do I need both?

I am sure this question has been asked already but I cannot find it having spent some time doing a search.
The question is do I need both or can I dispense with one? If so, with what consequences?
The position is that I tried to update Ovi maps but couldn't because there was insufficient space on drive C, so I thought I would delete it and then I would be able to install the new version. Unfortunately wrong again - still insufficient space on drive C. Hence my question - do I need both maps? Life would be easier just with Nokia maps in the circumstances.

Thanks. Can I take it that Nokia Maps is pre-installed? Would I be correct in concluding that I can delete Ovi Maps to save space and just update Nokia Maps from time to time?
If Nokia Maps is not updated from time to time I would need to install Ovi Maps to keep up-to-date?
I have I think deleted Ovi Maps but I still have Maps. In fact I am fairly certain I have all the maps I downloaded from OVi Maps. When I run Maps the screen refers to "Ovi Maps". Perhaps I haven't uninstalled Ovi Maps at all although the programme said that I had! Perhaps it is Ovi Maps that is pre-installed.
Sorry but I remain confused and hope I can through this tread clear it up once and for all.
