Noob GB 2011 questions re: plugging in a guitar

I'm starting to play around with the lessons and artist lessons on GB. I am a million years from wanting to record or mix anything.
While I have a nice amp, I am interested in using the built-in amps in GB both for fun as well as to make it easier to practice with the lessons.
I went to radio shack and bought a 1/4" to 1/8" converter (stereo, I think. No mono in stock) and plugged that in to my MacBook Pro. After playing around with various combinations of settings, I finally got a sound out. I did have to turn the master, gain and every dial way up.
Problem is, sometimes I hear the guitar, sometimes I don't. Sometimes there is a second of delay between my strumming and hearing the sound. Sometimes, chords get amplified, but single notes do not. Is this due to the choice of amp and amp settings?
Is the way I have connected the guitar not right? Do I need something like a MXL iBooster?
Right now, it seems a lot easier to use my regular amp. But being a Machead, I want to make it work

As you have noticed correctly, just plugging an electric guitar into the Mac normally doesn't lead to stellar results - the level of an unamplified guitar is just not high enough to provide a good signal. You'll be much better off if you bring the signal up, with a pre-amp, a mixing console, or an audio interface.

As for your other problems: hard to diagnose from afar. GB does tend to have a lot of latency, see this entry for tips to reduce it:

If your signal is cutting out completely, I can only assume that your connection is faulty in some way.

Hi, I have recently upgraded from a powerbook G4 to an iMac i7. I my new iMac, I bought the new version of Guitar Rig 4 and installed it. On my old Powerbook G4 I had Guitar Rig 3 installed. My problem is, when I open a Garageband file (ones that utilized effects from Guitar Rig 3) from my old mac on my new i7 GB gives me the message "The plug-in named “Guitar Rig” isn’t available on your system". Shouldn't the guitar rig 3 plugin effects I used on my old mac work fine as guitar rig 4 effects on my new mac? Since they obviously don't, is there a way to import my guitar rig settings and plugins from my old mac to my new one so I won't lose the GR3 effects that I used on my Garageband in my old mac? Please let me know if there is a way to do this, as it would be a huge pain to go through all my garageband files and re-tweak the plugins to get the same sounds I had on my old mac. Logic Pro X records (Audio) all the sounds of my computer when i plug in my guitar!

Might want to read the chapter on how to set Logic's audio section for recording.
While you're there read a couple of the chapters on basic recording techniques.

Plug-in Problem: Guitar Distortion on playback but not on record

Just plugged in my guitar to play through Logic and I've come across a problem I've never had before.
I'm playing my guitar direct. The level is fine in Logic and I can hear in through the monitors. When I had any effect like Guitar Amp or Guitar Rig 3, arm the track and play i get nothing but the clean guitar sound. no input reading into the plug-ins yet input is present in Logic. If I record a little audio and then playback the track it plays with the distortion. Anybody know why all of a sudden my effects won't play in record armed mode?

It's sounds like you're monitoring the dry guitar direct from your interface. Make sure direct monitoring is turned off, and turn software monitoring ON in Logic.
Now you should hear the effected guitar on your recording channel, even though just the clean signal is recorded.

How do I plug an electric guitar into my imace to use garage band

I'm a beginner. What do I need to buy and or download to plug my electric guitar into the imac?

Most online reviews give just about any apogee product a good name. Especially the jam and duet lines. Before you buy product make sure you evaluate exactly what you will need out of it. Will you always be recording just guitar tracks, or eventually want to record more than 2 tracks simultaneously? If you stick to purely 2-track most people say apogee sound is one of the best.
I personally own a different interface (FTU by Maudio) but mostly because I wanted up to 4 tracks at same time for live and studio recordings. It's an ok product but probably falls short of the apogee quality. Think about exactly what you want from your setup and price range. It's all a delicate balance of compromise from there...

SQL 2008 On SBS 2011 Question

Hi.
We have an sbs2011 std server.
We are looking at a new accounts package that requires SQL 2008 r2 (not express).
Our first thought was to purchase the premium add on but we can not find a single stockist in the UK that has one left for sale.
So is the only option to purchase another server with server OS and SQL 2008r2 STD on it if so this would be very very expensive.
We have also been made aware of SQL 2008 r2 for SBS, if this is OK to run the new accounts with then can this version of SQL be installed on SBS 2011 as we have found an copy that is for 1 server 5 cals for £600 (not sure how we buy more cals though as we
would need 6 users)
I would appreciate any advice on this situation.

It has been awhile since I have thought about this, but looking up the requirements for SQL 2008 for SBS I find this:

It appears it would work, and iirc the PAO was added for SBS 2011 because of the need to add a second server for SQL because Exchange 2010 uses so many resources on SBS 2011.

NOOB with remote question

Hi all, Im a noob here and just purchased the mega 180. I already have a couple of questions that I am hoping someone will be kind enough to answer. I have read through this forum and havent been able to find the answers (maybe looked in wrong place).
First, is it possible to use a different remote than the one provided? And if so, what others can be used or what software is necessary. Does the use of a different remote affect the HI-FI functions? As in, do you lose the ability to control those functions?
Second, could someone please tell me where I can purchase the MSI Mega TV tuner in the U.S.? And, if I get this tuner will the remote be able to control the media center 3 that ships with the mega? Will it be able to control the HI-FI?

Of course you can use a differente remote and, of course you'll lose the HiFi functions
If your new remote have IR-learning function you can make it learn the codes of the original remote and use it directly with your Mega.
In PC mode, you can use almost every remote and learn the commands with Girder (http://www.girder.nl, actually moved to another site)

Outlook 2011 question

I have recently installed Outlook 2011 and it seem to work OK in place of Entourage which I previously used. The question I have is that when I turn on my Mac in the morning and click send and receive I get multiple copies of each message. That did not happen using Entourage. Do I have something wrong with my account settings or is the a bug. Thanks

Office 2011 Question

I realize this is a MS question, but I am hoping for an answer here, since the answers on this forum are always helpful.
I had a custom dictionary in Office 2004 (also Word 98). I'd like to find a way to import my custom dictionary from Word 2004 into Word 2011 (or 2008).
When I upgraded from 2004 to 2008 I couldn't figure it out then. I am also running varous legacy devices. So that is why I mention all the various generations.

Word '11->Help->Word Help->search for custom dictionary and be enlightened. Note that '04 custom dictionaries are stored in your proofing tools folder (usually located in the Microsoft Office 2004/Shared Applications/).

However it takes many hours to play it manually. I d like to create a script for that and think script will work by itself (it will read 3d codes paste them automatically, it will click some words in website automatically etc.) I saw that one on your system its called "omerta rankscript". Could you tell me how i can start to do this and ? is it easy or how long time it takes to create a new plugin like this? also may i see the codes of this plug-in(omerta rankscript)?

Depending on what you want to develop, you could consider an ''extension'' or a ''userscript''. A plugin probably is not the right type of add-on to create.

FMS2 noob with capabilities question

I am just learning the basics of FMS2 and have some simple
questions(I hope).
I currently have a php/mysql application that creates mixes
of mp3s.The songs are played using progressive downloads and this
is causing some concerns among the license holders.I understand
that by using FMS2 I can stream the mp3s instead.
My question is about keeping current functionality after
migrating to FMS2.
My mp3 player uses xml playlists.Its is already coded to hook
into flashcom streams if needed. To create a playlist, a user
searches the DB and adds songs to his account. I then use php to
write the added song data to an xml playlist. The playlist is
stored in the users folder, with a copy of the mp3 player. The mp3s
are all pulled from a specific location on the server.
From what I have learned about FMS2 so far(which is very
little), I am not sure if streams can be dynamically created in the
same fashion. I have seen plenty of info about FMS2 streaming mp3s
from a specific playlist with the mp3 all coming from the
application folder, but not any info about what I am trying to
attempt.
I would not be doing the coding myself, I can handle
php/mysql but I know very little about action script and have
little time to learn. But I want to know if I am barking up the
wrong tree. Are dynamic streams possible? I dont want to look like
an idiot when I try to hire someone to code an impossible solution.
Im not looking for a how to, just want to know if the capability
exists in FMS2

Yes... everything you're asking about can be done with FMS,
and fairly easily at that.

Some IPAD noobie email/exchange questions:

People around here have been super-helpful so if youve answered any of my previous questions, thank you.
Just started using my first IPAD (3) and have some questions regarding mail:
1) Is there any faster way to get to an attachment than to scroll down to the end of an email? Why is the "attchment-icon" at the end of the email and not somewhere a bit more accessible?
2) Everything seemed to have worked fine when I set up exchange but there was no sync for my contacts or notes (only mail and reminders/tasks). What did I possibly do wrong here?
Finally, for those that use their IPADs for work and who peruse a large amount of emails via exchange, what would you advise I get with regard to a data plan? (I am on Verizon)

Christmas Mac noob! First question is on printing

Greetings to the Mac community from a lifelong Windows/DOS geek. I have a brand-new MacbookPro that I'm muddling my way around -- I'm on Day Two, and so far so good, except...I can't print successfully.
Details: HP Laserjet 3200 all-in-one, networked via a Windows box running XP. My new MBP prints fine to the network --great! -- except it's gibberish. What should be a half-page doc runs on for 10-20 pages or more; looks like some kind of secret Mac code. Sounds like a driver issue, right? I've tried the HP 3200 drivers showing up on the MBP list when I "add printer," and so far nothing is working. Should I be crawling into the Windows box and doing something there?

The best info I can find says that this printer shipped with both parallel and USB interfaces, so you should be able to hook it up via the USB port simply by buying a USB cable.
The parallel port won't work reliably under Mac OS X, even with an adapter cable. You could buy one from a specialized cable company, but like the SCSI to FireWire adapters that were popular for a while, it wouldn't work that well.
